Waterfall house

Page 1

the house is situated on a gently sloping site, positioned towards its back boundary 足 the highest point. the site is flanked by similar residential stands all around and an access lane running down the south western boundary. the structure is seamlessly integrated into the topography of the site, maintaining connection with it's natural landscape. it is orientated toward dam views to the north and a meandering stream to the south west. the open plan design has 2 levels, centrally connected by a double volume space promoting hot air to flow up and out through high openings. expanses of glass, articulated by horizontal planes of timber, filter light through this volume and into the living spaces below. the layout has a strong emphasis on indoor outdoor living, with protected 'open to sky' garden courtyards, providing natural light and ambient air, generating true enlightenment to its occupants. the living spaces flow onto a large wrap around veranda and swimming pool, with a rolling grass lawn in the front of the stand. an enclosed study is positioned next to the entry foyer to provide privacy from the motor court, street and entrance approach. all bedrooms are on the upper level and spill onto a private deck, shaded by a horizontal timber pergola. this wonderful vantage point captures lovely landscape vistas, the beautiful dam, and the gentle stream beyond. environmentally conscious design principles manifest sustainable living in the building, contributing a meaningful response to the south african climate and the waterfall village vernacular.
