Beach

[+] Existing arrangement Unattractive and haphazardlyarranged carts between the Beach Road and the sea attract many people to buy snacks but lead to excessive amounts of litter and food waste left along the sea-front.

[+] Whilst the carts themselves have a certain charm, their location on the sea-front blots the view of the Bay of Bengal and, when not in use, look abandoned and shabby.

[+] Benefits of the Food Court Removes informal traders and associated clutter from the Beach Road; the prime space can be reclaimed by the public Provision for a waste disposal management; a formal system for the removal of waste produced by vendors and diners and currently ends up along the Beach Road or in the sea due to a lack of bins Landscaped dining / seating areas; to encourage those eating not to take their food and subsequent waste out of the Food Court and not take advantage of the bins provided Improved hygiene; running water will be made available to vendors and customers for hand washing and cleaning cooking equipment Addition of public conveniences; a necessary addition to the centre of Pondicherry which is currently devoid of w/cs

[+] Why site the Food Court at Gandhi Tidal? Central location; directly adjacent to Gandhi Tidal and in close proximity to Bharathi Park, the Beach Road and local attractions such as the Ashram, Museum and French Town Site is currently disused and in a poor state; the overgrown gap site is used as an informal car-park and a public convenience making it an unattractive area in the centre of Pondicherry

the food court Dry Snack Carts Phase 1 Gap Site Proposal

[+] Existing Site The gap site, situated between the disused Mother Theresa Building, the Port Authorities Building and Lighthouse, and the Promenade Hotel is a long strip. The property to the West of the site was previously separated by a wall which was since been removed. There is a remaining drainage sump which marks the boundary. A wall will need to be reinstated to provide privacy and reduce noise issues for any future redevelopment of this space.

[+] At present, the site is used by neighbouring properties for parking. Attention will need to be paid to providing on-street parking to remedy this. The site also houses an electricity sub station which will need to be relocated so as not to intrude into the proposed Food Court.

[+] Initial Concept The layout of the dry snack cart Food Court is simple and remains unchanged throughout the design development: the relocated carts from the beach line the length of the long site, with a covered seating area running the length of the centre. Circulating space is left in between.

[+] Modifications Reinstate wall to the West of the site Consider on-street parking for displaced vehicles Organisation of services, such as water outlets, lighting, etc. Provide sufficient space for the relocation of the electricity sub station Formalise the layout of the food carts

[+] Existing Site At present, the built up area adjacent to the proposed Cart Food Court consists of a number of disused rooms surrounding a roofed courtyard which opens onto Gandhi Tidal. In this proposal, the shell is reworked to accommodate food vendors, retaining the atrium space for diners to eat under a canopy.

[+] To the West, the site borders Bharathi Park. Whilst it does not mirror the boundary wall on the opposite side of Gandhi Tidal, it does continue the building line established by the Mother Theresa Building. Unsightly municipal fixtures also interfere with this facade of the Food Court and block the pavement.

[+] The Larger Context The latter proposal is concerned with returning the intended symmetry to the area surrounding Gandhi Tidal, which has been lost over the years due to unsympathetic development.

Adjacent to the proposed site for the Food Court, the existing plot has retained the original wall and has avoided intrusive building projects - bar the water tower which the proposal identifies for demolition whilst, opposite, a warehouselike building has been constructed, incorporating the walls and ruining the street like along Bharathi Park.

[+] Existing Elements The gateposts, which mirror those on the opposite site, are still visible within the wall, as is the string-course and cornice of the original wall. Removing the additions to return Gandhi Tidal to its original state would not be too difficult.

[+] As with the opposite site, gates can be reinstated to secure the Food Court at night. Both sides of Gandhi Tidal are going to require extensive maintenance work.
