ST RAT EGIC A PPR OA CH Despite all of these significant facts and developments: “When most people think about the eight-county Capital Region of New York, they rarely focus on its diverse and world-class creative assets—where cutting-edge technology converges with design, arts and culture.”3 Recently, the Regional Alliance for the Creative Economy commissioned a research study from Mt. Auburn Associates to identify and quantify the Capital Region’s creative assets, and develop specific recommendations on activities to leverage those assets. Through the study’s findings, the Alliance learned that the creative sector is a significant component of the regional economy. The region has outstanding assets on which to build. However, in order to grow this sector, the area needs to think regionally, promote transformation, encourage world class enterprises and foster collaboration over time.

SP E CIA L PRO GRA MS & INITI AT IVE S Across the long and rich history of Albany, Nipper ranks as the top dog. He has been anchored atop a warehouse on North Broadway for three generations. Stay. Sit. Good dog! NIPPER: FESTIVAL MASCOT
Nipper was a real-life dog that was painted by his owner’s brother, Francis Barraud. He depicted the curious dog listening to a gramophone and titled it “His Master’s Voice.” This image was the basis for an internationally recognized logo for numerous audio recording companies and associated brands such as Berliner Gramophone, Deutsche Grammophon, Victor Talking Machine Co. (later known as RCA Victor and then RCA Records), EMI and HMV Retail Ltd.
The spirit of Nipper will be present throughout CAPITAL. Images of this world-renowned pup will welcome festival attendees and help provide walking navigation throughout the downtown venues during the weekend activities. A portion of each festival badge sold can be set up to benefit a not-for-profit organization that aids the efforts of animal humane organizations throughout New York state.
“Downtown is Pawsome” is an exhibit featuring 20 sculptures based on Albany’s famous canine resident and local landmark, colorfully customized by regional artists. These painted dogs are in various locations throughout downtown Albany.
