THE PROJECT’S CORE CONCEPT LOOKS TO DEVELOP A SPATIAL/PROGRAMMATIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT ECONOMIC CYCLES ALREADY PRESENT ALONG THE PHILADELPHIA WATERFRONT - AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND LUXURY BOAT-ORIENTED RECREATION. BOAT HOUSE INTRODUCES A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE CYCLES WHICH PRODUCE MUTUAL BENEFITS AND NOVEL EXPERIENCES. HOUSING AND BOATS ARE PLACED WITHIN AN ARCHITECTURAL FRAMEWORK THAT RISES FROM THE NORTH EDGE OF THE EXISTING PIER AFFORDING VIEWS OF THE BEN FRANKLIN BRIDGE AND ANCHORING A NEWLY EXPANDED MARINA ZONE. OPENINGS BETWEEN THE HOUSING UNITS SERVE TO DRY-DOCK BOATS DURING THE WINTER (WHEN TERRACES ARE UNDESIRABLE FOR RESIDENTS), BUT BECOME QUIRKY, FUN OUTDOOR SPACES FOR ADJACENT APARTMENTS DURING WARM WEATHER (WHEN BOATS ARE IN THE WATER). THE PEDESTRIAN GROUND LEVEL OF THE PIER IS ENHANCED THROUGH SUPPORTING PROGRAMS LIKE A FULLYOPERATIONAL MARINA WITH TWENTY-FIVE BOAT SLIPS, BOAT SUPPLY SHOP, KAYAK LAUNCH, OPEN-AIR SCULPTURE GALLERY, AND DOCKSIDE RESTAURANT..

MARKET SPRING 2019 | CRITIC : MAYA ALAM | UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL OF DESIGN MARKET IS ASSEMBLED FROM CONTORTED NORMATIVE BLOCKS. WHILE THEIR SCALE IS APPROPRIATED FROM AND IS A CRITIQUE OF THE NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS IN MANAYUNK, THE UPWARD/INWARD CONTORTIONS LEAVE THEM TOO BIG FOR THE SITE AND FOR THEMSELVES, SEEMINGLY BUCKLING UNDER THEIR SHEER WEIGHT. THE COLLECTION OF TWISTED BLOCKS CREATES A SERIES OF INTERIORNODES THAT SERVE AS AN ADDED VERTICAL LANDSCAPE TO THE MANAYUNK CITYSCAPE, ACTING AS FLEXIBLE SPACE FOR MINI-MARKETS, FESTIVALS AND PERFORMANCES. WITHIN THE TWISTED INTERIOR EXISTS AN ECOSYSTEM OF RAMPS AND PLATFORMS. WHILE THE MASSING OF THE MARKET ACTS AS A LARGE, CAVERNOUS PLACE WITH INTERSPERSED FLOOR SLABS, UPON ENTERING THE BUILDING, IT REVEALS ITSELF AS A CONTINUOUS TUNNEL WITH IMPROMPTU VIEWINGPLATFORMS. WHILE NOT BEING COMPLETELY ENCLOSED, YET NOT COMPLETELY OPEN TO THE ELEMENTS, THE SEMI-PRIVATE COURTYARD SERVES AS THE HEART
OF THE BUILDING AND POSITIONS ITSELF AS THE NEW NEIGHBORHOOD SQUARE FOR THE COMMUNITY. MARKET IS MUCH MORE THAN A MARKET, IT ALSO FUNCTIONS AS A HOUSEHOLD PLASTICS RECYCLING CENTER, WHERE MANAYUNKIANS BRING IN THEIR OLD PLASTIC CONTAINERS TO BE SANITIZED AND CLEANEDOF ALL RESIDUE, AND EITHER BE REFILLED BY A LOCAL VENDOR OR BROKEN DOWN, SORTED AND BAGGED AND SOLD AS WHOLESALE PLASTIC STOCK. MARKET CLOSES THE PLASTIC WASTE LOOP FOR THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF MANAYUNK WHERE CONTAINERS ARE GIVEN A CHANCE FOR A SECOND LIFE AND LIVE ON PAST THEIR INITIAL USE, RESULTING IN A DECREASED BURDEN ON PHILADELPHIA’S EXISTING RECYCLING INFRASTRUCTURE AND REDUCES THE CHANCE OF THE PLASTIC ENDING UP IN A LANDFILL.

WHY CAN’T PRECIOUS VESSELS BE RETRIEVED AT AN INSTANT? WHY CAN’T A MUSEUM BE MORE OF A ROLODEX OF OBJECT D’ART THAN A MAUSOLEUM? A MUSEUM IN WHICH CURIOSITY REPLACES BOREDOM OF A SET CURATORIAL MANIFESTO, A PNEUMATIC CLUSTER OF ALUMINUM ARMATURES TRANSPORTING ANTIQUITOUS ARTS TO THEIR TEMPORARY GLASS ETUI FOR THE CALLER TO CANVASS. A BRAIN IS WHAT THE PENN MUSEUM’S PATRON DESERVES, WHICH CREATES A NEW CIVIC RIGHT TO VIEW THE COMPLETE BREADTH OF THE COLLECTION INSTEAD OF ONLY VIEWING THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG THAT IS PLACED ON-DISPLAY WITH THE CURRENT CURATORIAL IDEOLOGIES.

CLOUD IRIDESCENCE WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE VIEWERS WITH AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE WITH THE ANTIQUE VESSELS EMBEDDED WITHIN. INSPIRED BY THE METHOD OF CROCHET, THE PAVILION TRANSFORMS THE IDENTITY OF A SIMPLE STITCH AND USES IT TO CONSTRUCT A VESSEL FOR VESSELS. APPROACHING THE PAVILION, THE APPARENT OPENINGS ARE DESIGNED TO MAKE THE SPECTATOR CURIOUS. AN OCULUS IS PROVIDED FOR SPECTATORS TO BIREFLY LOOK DOWN INTO THE PAVILION AND GET A PREVIEW OF WHAT IS UNDER THE CANOPY. EACH VESSEL IS ILLUMINATED BY MULTIPLE LIGHT SOURCES COVERED BY A DICHROIC FILM.
I FEAR IT MAY BE SENTIENT SUMMER 2018 | CRITIC : EZIO BLASETTI & DANIELLE WILLEMS | UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL OF DESIGN THERE’S SOMETHING OFF WITH THIS THING . . . THE MONSTROSITY SEEMS TO BE LEANING FORWARD TO HEAR THE BAND’S MUSIC . IT MOVES EVEN WHEN THE WIND IS NOT BLOWING , ALMOST AS IF IT HAS A BRAIN . THE HAIRS JERK AND REACT TO THE HUMAN TOUCH . HOPEFULLY THE CATERING COMPANY HAS CLOSE TABS ON THEIR CUTLERY , I WOULD HATE FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN . DID IT JUST STEAL THAT GUY’S WALLET ? THIS INSTALLATION HAS A MIND OF IT’S OWN , AND I AM SORTA OKAY WITH IT . . . IMAGINING A MOMA PS1 YOUNG ARCHITECTS PROGRAM INSTALLATION.

RESONANCE SPRING 2018 | CRITIC : ERIKA ZEKOS , AJLA AKSAMIJA | UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST RESONANCE IS AN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROJECT WITH THE INTENT TO CREATE PHYSICAL WORK(S) THAT GENERATES A SENSORY EXPERIENCE FOR THE USER AND VIEWER. THE MAIN INTENT IS TO SHOWCASE THE TRANSFORMATION OF DIGITAL DATA INTO PARAMETRIC DESIGN, WHILE ALSO INCORPORATING THE CATEGORIES THAT MAKE UP OUR UNDERSTANDING OF ATMOSPHERE, AS DEFINED BY ARCHITECT PETER ZUMTHOR ; THE BODY OF ARCHITECTURE, MATERIAL COMPATIBILITY, THE SOUND OF SPACE, THE TEMPERATURE OF SPACE, SURROUNDING OBJECTS, BETWEEN COMPOSURE AND SEDUCTION, TENSION BETWEEN INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, LEVELS OF INTIMACY, THE LIGHT ON THINGS, ARCHITECTURE AS SURROUNDINGS, COHERENCE, AND THE BEAUTIFUL FORM.

THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO ADAPTIVELY RE-USE THE ORIGINAL 1928 JONES LIBRARY, CREATE A LOGICAL CIRCULATION, AND BRING THE LIBRARY INTO THE 21ST CENTURY. THE NEW BUILDING DESIGN ALLOWS PATRONS TO ACCESS THE BUILDING FROM THE REAR PARKING LOT, GIVES A CLEAR HIERARCHY OF SPACE, AND A LOGICAL INTERIOR CIRCULATION. THE BUILDING ALSO UTILIZES SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES , SUCH AS PASSIVE COOLING AND USING THERMAL MASSING FOR PASSIVE HEAT.

THE GARDEN INVITES ITS VISITORS TO A MULTI-LAYERED EXPERIENCE OF THE LOGS GATHERED FROM DIFFERENT MILLS IN QUEBEC, BY CREATING AN INTERACTIVE FACET AND A POPULATED INNER SPACE. THE GARDEN IS MADE OF HORIZONTALLY STACKED, LARGE AND SMALL LOGS HELD BY LOGGING BUNKS AND SURROUNDED BY SEMI-TRANSLUCENT SCREENS.THE SCREENS ARE PIERCED WITH HOLES, REFERENCING THE TRUNKS, TO WHICH HOOKS ARE INSERTED. DIFFERENT SIZES OF ROPES HANG FROM THE HOOKS. VISITORS OF DIFFERENT AGES MAY DRAW CIRCLES ON THE SCREENS BY USING WASHABLE PAINT AND DIFFERENT SIZE PAINTBRUSHES. THE VISITORS ENGAGE IN MIMICKING THE GEOMETRY OF THE LOGS, THE TREES’ GROWTH RINGS AND ULTIMATELY THE LIMITS OF THEIR OWN BODY BY INSCRIBING CIRCLES. OVER TIME, THE SCREENS BECOME THE RECORD HOLDER OF THE VISITORS’ MARK.

‘ECOLOGICAL MEDIATORS’ OFFERS RESILIENT SOLUTIONS ALONG EACH OF THE FOUR RIVERS OF CAPE-ROUGE, SAINT-CHARLES, BEAUPORT AND MONT-MORENCY BY CONSIDERING NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENICALLY-ALTERED HYDROLOGIC FLUCTUATIONS (TIDES, SEA LEVEL RISE, FLOODING) THAT DEFINE THE ECOSYSTEMS, CASTING THE RIVERS AS MEDIATORS OF THESE CHANGING ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. TURNING EACH OF THE RIVERS INTO A DYNAMIC FILTER, THE PROJECT CREATES BUILT-IN CAPACITY FOR THE RIVERS AND THEIR FLOODPLAINS TO ABSORB AND ALLEVIATE CHANGES AND TRANSFORMATIONS THAT MIGHT BE OTHERWISE DEVASTATING.
RISING MEASURES WINTER 2018 | PARI RIAHI ARCHITECTS / PARI RIAHI / UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST THE CONTRAST BETWEEN LIVING CONDITIONS IN PARIS AND ITS STRUGGLING SUBURBS IS UNSETTLING. AWAY FROM THE DETERMINED FORM AND DEFINED STRUCTURE OF THE CITY LIES THE CONSTELLATION OF DISEMBODIED SUBURBS, INCREASINGLY VIOLENT AND SEGREGATED. THE RESEARCH PROJECT INVESTIGATES THE POTENTIAL MEANS TO TRANSFORM THE LIVING CONDITIONS IN THE CITÉS HLM BY INVESTIGATING TWO DIFFERENT SCALES: 1) LARGER SCALE URBAN/ SUBURBAN STRATEGIES AND 2) HOUSING PROTOTYPES ADAPTATIONS TO ALLOW THE CITÉS HLM TO BECOME TRULY LIVABLE ENVIRONMENTS.
