COPY CONSTRUCT CONSTRUCT COPY PHOTOGRAPHY ‘Untitled 2008, orange, mirror and fake orange’ (acrylic, foam and tape) is a work of Dutch artist Marijn van Kreij (b. 1978, www.marijnvankreij.nl). A small floor sculpture concretely and humorously sums up the artist’s display of the impossibility of flawless duplication. An orange is placed before a hand mirror, but rather than allowing the reflection to stand on its own, the artist completes it with a fake orange, with all its handmade imperfections, on the other side. In Marijn van Kreij’s multifaceted oeuvre, consisting of drawings, paintings, collages, videos and installations, the process of duplication plays a key role. In his work, Van Kreij finds a connection with historical work by artists from the past — the legacy of modernism in particular — as well as with music and visual culture in the broader sense. Reflecting on ideas around repetition and autonomy, authenticity, originality and artistic appropriation, his work often forms a response to existing works of art. The replication process features prominently in Van Kreij’s work, through a variety of reproduction methods and means including scanners, photography, photocopiers, ready-mades and quotes.

Assignment Photography: object, mirror and fake object Fabricate your own version of the still life Untitled 2008, by Marijn van Kreij. First you have to determine which object you want to choose (like the orange in the Untitled 2008 work), take into consideration its meaning, size, form and material. Of this object you will manually construct an exact copy, made by a material of choice. Although you must aim for perfection, you will never succeed; this will create an interesting tension. Also you’ll have to go find a mirror; maybe you own one, otherwise you will have to find, buy or make one. From these three elements you must set up a composition like our example, however: scale and size are up to you, you determine whether your installation should be conveniently small or maybe XXL. It should be placed on the floor for it to become an installation, placed on a table or socket or such it would remain an object. Subsequently you photograph it, and this sounds easier than it usually is because the images can be made with a professional camera or with your phone, but they must be artistic, made with great care for detail, light and focus. This photograph is the final, autonomous artwork. Present it as such: print it beautifully, mount it on a certain material and maybe even frame it. As an accompanying soundtrack you choose a cover version of an existing piece of music.

Assignment GRAPHIC DESIGN Pracht und Prinzip, 2016 was an exhibition at the Van Abbemuseum of Dutch artist Bas van Beek (b. 1974, www.basvanbeek.com). In Pracht und Prinzip the designer Bas van Beek combines the design principles of the Bauhaus and the Wiener Werkstätte with the collection of the Van Abbemuseum. Van Beek sees the Bauhaus school, with its total commitment to the industrially manufactured product, and the Wiener Werkstätte with its more frivolous, more craftsmanlike and smaller scale approach, as the cradle of contemporary design. He redesigned the series of designs and patterns of the two different schools. Bas van Beek (1974, Nijmegen) is an anti-designer who in his artwork takes a critical standpoint towards marketing mechanisms, ‘branding’, lame conceptualism and uncritical designer cults. His artistic practice largely exists of form research, inspired by existing, historical designs. Through his work he poses questions like: what is real and what is unreal; how does the real world relate to the artificial one, as seen in manifestations of popular culture; to what extend is our daily life influenced by icons from that particular artificial world? The search for the essence, history and context of objects is the guidance, the core of his design practice.

Assignment Graphic Design: a personal wallpaper to invade the white cube Choose form-elements from your childhood, typical for the place you were born and raised, the culture you originate from. Combine these with elements that are important in your current development as a designer. More often than not there are matches and resemblances rather than contrasts in seemingly conflicting cultural movements. The combination of the two elements will result in a collage, with an interesting shape. In the collage you want to obtain a certain abstraction, without losing its detailing. By copying and mirroring this collage a pattern will emerge that you will use for wallpaper. From a distance this wallpaper will look like an abstraction, only through close inspection the details will be visible. This collage could be regarded as a visual bridge between your cultural background and your contemporary design practice. The bridge would serve as research material to find, and eventually represent either the common denominator or the difference between the cultures. The use of wallpaper as a backdrop for contemporary art is used as a means to breach the dominant principal of the ‘white cube’. Mount your wallpaper on a white cube of choice. This could be a museum space or a room in a public building or another space, as long as it makes sense and enhances your project. Make this space physical by making a rendering or photocollage. On one of the walls you will place the artwork with the object, fake object and mirror. These assignments address the following themes (among others): copy, construct, paradox, autonomy, appropriation, parallel realities, repetition, identity and contradictions.

Implementation 1. During the photography class you will construct: the object with the fake object and the mirror. You will make a photograph of the constructed object and present this as an original framed artwork. As a soundtrack with the work you choose a cover version of an existing piece of music. 2. During the graphic design class you will design a personalized pattern as wallpaper and apply this wallpaper in the situation of a white cube. In this white cube you will place your photograph (artwork). At the final presentation you will use the wallpaper as a background to present your photograph. You can also make your own sample pattern book. Combined book as a group exhibition: We will put together a book with the work of both classes combined (1A+1B), printed digitally by Lulu.com. We will construct the book but we need you to deliver the material on June 2 as it has to be ready in time for the final review. The last week can be used to sharpen your presentation for the collective review. See examples: http://issuu.com/michaelsnitker Delivery on June 2: 1. The final photograph in highres. (ca. A4 300 dpi), mounted and framed, the name and performer of the chosen music piece, as well as the original composer. 2. Samples of your wallpaper as a highres. pdf file (or jpg/tiff A4, 1200 dpi) and a rendering or collage of the application. Final presentation on June 12-13: Use the wallpaper as a background to present your photograph. You can make also a sample book of your designed patterns. Bring with you the first lesson Thursday April 13: Bring a printout of a personal image or object from your cultural background. Also bring a printout of an image of a space/place that has been a factor in choosing to study interior design, and tell us why this has been important. Important: sketch and take notes as much as possible, we will discuss your sketches every lesson.

Flower Dance

Original composer by DJ Okawari — Flower Dance Cover song by Hiroyuki Kosuga The medium of film is alike to memory. This is because film must be handled with the utmost care before developing the film into pictures. This is also how my precious childhood memories work. And once the pictures are developed then they can be preserved as memories. The pieces of film that are stored separately are the spaces in which my memories live. I went on a field trip as a child. Because I had forgotten to bring my camera, I hurried to the nearby supermarket and bought an instant camera before going on the field trip. Cameras were

highly valuable items when traveling. This is because cameras helped you remember what you did with whom. So during the field trip I took pictures of various moments using the instant camera. On the bus ride home from the field trip I opened up the camera to look at the film. At that time I wasn’t sure what I was doing and didn’t understand what I had done wrong. I unraveled the roll of film without having won it back up. Because the film had not yet been developed, all of my pictures that day were lost. The camera and film and media that can record memories.

Wallpaper theme : Кукер (Kuker) Sculpture name : Кукер (Kuker) Kukeri (Bulgarian: кукери; singular: kuker, кукер) are elaborately costumed Bulgarian men who perform traditional rituals intended to scare away evil spirits. Closely related traditions are found throughout the Balkans and Greece (including Romania and the Pontus). The costumes cover most of the body and include decorated wooden masks of animals (sometimes double-faced) and large bells attached to the belt. Around New Year and before Lent, the kukeri walk and dance through villages to scare away evil

spirits with their costumes and the sound of their bells. They are also believed to provide a good harvest, health, and happiness to the village during the year. The kukeri traditionally visit peoples' houses at night so that ‘the sun would not catch them on the road’. After parading around the village they usually gather at the village square to dance wildly and amuse the people. Kukeri rituals vary by region but remain largely the same in essence.

When I was young, my mother gave me a clown doll. And the doll was hanging under the lamp. I was scared of all the dolls after watching the movie of Chucky and the doll reminds me a Chucky. The composition of the clown was staring down at me. I was so scared and didn’t want to get in the room. The doll was removed eventually, I became

scared whenever I was thinking of the clown doll. I chose clown doll and chucky (which called the doll) for the object. Now I am not afraid of clown doll anymore and this was my scary memory with clown doll in my childhood. when I fo to bed, I had a nightmare and it feels really unrealistic. So I pick the surrealistic image.
