Balancing Acts “Balance is most beautiful just before it collapses.” — Fischli/Weiss Peter Fischli and David Weiss were a Swiss artist duo that has been collaborating since 1979. They met in the Kontiki bar in Zurich and were thrilled by the collaborative DIY ethos of the late 1970s punk scene. From then on they have been collaborating on a body of work that combines, rearranges, or otherwise manipulates their daily experiences into something new and unexpected in order to investigate matters of everyday life as well as questioning the meaning of existence. In their practice there was no master plan: one project flowed intuitively into the next. Your life as well as the educational system and the creative industries are undergoing fundamental changes. You are expected to find a balance between content and form, between the individual and the community and between your obligations and the need for freedom. Practically our assignment consists of three components: a photographic part, a graphic design part and a textual part. But it will also address the underlying topic of searching for a balance between the head and the heart; a balance between the need for analytical and structural thinking, and, on the other hand, the joy of artistic freedom. Assignment (introducing three works of Peter Fischli und David Weiss) 1. Photography: Equilibres, Fischli/Weiss, 1984–1987 (see: 012) Between 1984–1987 Fischli/Weiss made a series of photographs consisting of balancing household objects and studio stuff to investigate what the essence of sculpture could be. Because the “sculptures” fell apart right after the photograph was made the image then became the artwork, the only thing left. Each photo was given a name, like: A Restless Night, Mr. and Mrs. Pear with Their New Dog, The Sedative or Three Sisters. For this class you are going to shoot a series of three photographs of a homemade sculpture, consisting of temporary structures taken from your everyday life. Although the sculptures will vary in size, the photographs will have the same. This to set aside the issue of scale. The images can be either in color or black and white but must be poetic, made with great care for detail, light and focus. Give them a title that reflects what you want the image to tell us. This part of the assignment represents the wonder, the surprise of the unexpected.

Assignment 2. Graphic Design: Ordnung und Reinlichkeit, Fischli/Weiss, 1981 (see: 013) The book Ordnung und Reinlichkeit (Order and Cleanliness) is an early work of Fischli/Weiss and appeared in 1981 to accompany their Rat and Bear films. This handmade photocopied booklet contains 11 drawings of diagrams attempting to explain and to give order to the world. For this class you will make charts and diagrams that will impose a crazed new order in your world. A Diagram is like a technical drawing, it has to be logical and correct. The world however is not logical at all, try to translate that fact in your drawings. The balancing act in your everyday live — as described in the introduction — would be the main topic. Next to the diagram you will have to design a symbol that represents your diagram, like the rat and bear figures on the book cover (see: backside cover). Your diagram and symbol can be hand drawn or designed on your computer, as long as it enhances your signature. Make a handmade copy of your Ordnung und Reinlichkeit book in an edition of minimal 5. This part of the assignment represents structure, the ratio. 3. Text: How to Work Better, Fischli/Weiss, 1991 (see: 014) How to Work Better is a well-known work by Fischli/Weiss. It consists of a ten-point manifesto that the artists found, enlarged, and had painted on the side of a building in Zurich. Their instructions are meant as a self-motivating reminder and description of their own process as artists, but are also directed to the rest of the world. We live in a society that is rapidly changing; the school system has to find new ways to connect with these new demands. The last time the art school system had to radically redefine itself was in the Bauhaus period. In your design practice as well as in the school system the student participation has become more important and we want you to consider what would be your specific set of rules to become the best possible student during your studies at this academy, what do you want from school and what can you give in return? With this part of the assigment we want you to articulate possible conflicting results; a balancing act in itself. This part of the assignment requires and represents critical thinking. Implementation 1. During the photography class you will make 3 photographs of temporary structures 2. During the graphic design class you will design diagrams and a symbol 3. During both classes you will construct your own set of rules We will put together a book with the work of both classes combined (1A+1B), printed digitally by Lulu.com. We will construct the book but we need you to deliver the material on May 29 as it has to be ready in time for the final review. The last week can be used to sharpen your presentation for the collective review. See examples: http://issuu.com/michaelsnitker Delivery on May 29 1. The final 3 photos in highres. (ca. A4 300 dpi) with the title(s) in a text file 2. Your diagram(s) and symbol as a highres. pdf file (or jpg/tiff A4-A3, 1200 dpi) 3. Your set of rules in a text file Bring with you the first lesson April 10 Bring a print out of an image of the artwork that has been a factor in choosing to study Interior/ Furniture design, and tell us why this has been important.

Work 48 hours per day. Take advantage of working at night. Cry, if you need to – let it all out. Put all emotions into your work. Experience, see and perceive. Focus, but stare at the wall from time to time. Do not forget to reset your mind – party. Make more mistakes. Try more and shut up. Watch Game of Thrones while creating. Play, do not be too serious. Do not break your scale puppet’s legs. If you feel super stuck, open a bottle of Tatra tea. Shake the world. Always show up, do not ditch. Exercise your brain out. Go to Burger King to see what sad design looks like. Do not squish my face. Ask, ask, ask. Do not forget to close the glue and ink while working. Take your scale puppets on a holiday with you, in the wallet.

First thing in the morning is to recall your dreams. Set an alarm clock 3 hours before the actual time you want to get up. Check and double check if your are in the dream when doing stupid things. Look at things use the angle of the man standing behind you. Start thinking like when you are dreaming, and then make it work in reality. Give action as soon as you think about it, don’t wait too long so it will always be a dream. Keep dream journals. They are good sources. Don’t judge people, since you don’t read other’s mind as if you were in the dream. Be nice to your enemies, because most of the time they are friends in your dream. How to Work Better

Slaap voldoende. Uitgerust lijkt alles anders.

2 liter is voldoende.

Wees open tegen anderen.

If you know you got to work, don’t eat too much, otherwise you fall asleep. Clean your desk to work better. Read carefully the assignment (few times would be better). Accidents always happen during the process, be prepared with a plan B/C/D/(…)/Z! Start collecting all the materials you could need. (BLA BLA) Start working in a professional, clean and neat way (I am really “good” in that). If something goes wrong through the process, don’t panic and don’t stress out, take a long breath (maybe smoke a cigarette if you are a smoker … Then, if you are not, start smoking, trust me, you will need that) and take it easy. 8. Try to get in your mind that failing is part of the process, you are not perfect! 9. Find the solution of the problem. (BLA BLA BLA) 10. Finish your work without getting distracted every two seconds. 11. Clean again your desk and the stuff you used, then, put them back in their shelves. 12. You can go to sleep or smoke another cigarette now, you are free!!

created by passion

24/7 can be lethal

people will cross lines

accomplishments are accomplishments only relevant if the thought of them makes you smile

goals = happiness

only with fragments

rules make easy

might not be relevant facts can be reliable, but you might have a wrong source all planned out

control freak

new evidence?

explains? or confuses?

no more disapproval

no more masking

Brain

cold case

put it in a piece of art re-unite with the past use the guiding it can be apossibility lines to guid you, that the answer lies in don’t let them history lead you

new adventures

no nonsens

acknowledge the pain

be on guard

elefant skins don’t grow in one day

future prospects

somethings ain’t pretty

watch your back

no anti-aging mud

Heart

run

breadcrums

don’t collect them to early

emotions are valuable keep your shoes high pressure bottle

mind your own business generate energy

embrace your new haven hiding is not a permanent solution

no one will like your new ones

lay low

check up on your memories fossil?

you have to build a good isolation to remain energy

some memories are ment to fade, don’t try to hold on to them

they might be solved in time

explore new roads

daily singing love more

let it hurt

hoist the sails

no popping bottles without occacion green?

detoxicate

refresh your mind at some point strangers become...

put the good ones on paper lovers

embrace bad examples strangers can become lovers and lovers can become strangers
