RESUME
MICHAEL STANLEY ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
ABOUT ME
Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa Major: Bachelor of Architecture Minor: Sustainability Graduation: May 2020 GPA: 3.82
Without intentions to make life artful, I believe architecture to be useless. As an architecture student, I am interested in architecture that pushes boundaries without losing its rationality and constructibility.

Intern Architect Studio Melee, Des Moines, Fall 2017
In my mind, the architect is one who combines art and building, creating a solution to each unique problem that arises with its creation. That being said, I am intrigued by both architecture as art and architecture as building in both the academic and professional field, and would like to find a balance between these two foci as I carry on throughout my academic and professional career.

CRYSTALLINE HOUSE ARCH 201: Downtown Residence Studio Year: 2nd Year Type: Commercial/Residential Location: Ames, IA
Ames’ Main Street is known as the cultural hub of the city, hosting many events and offering a variety of unique services, a true novelty to its community. The following is an infill project that integrates commercial and residential space for a florist who lives and works in the same building, yet, the spaces are strictly divided. With an emphasis on vertical shift of form, transparency and translucency to establish programmatic difference, this project produces an enjoyable living space, while offering a new program to the Main Street.

LANDING PAD ARCH 202: Food Hub Studio Year: 2nd Year Type: Commercial Location: Minneapolis, MN
Food waste is becoming a much larger issue around the world as population increases and landfills continue to fill up. The building program uses battery electric vehicles to handle its transportation needs. By picking up unwanted food from surrounding food providers and reselling or composting it at a lesser cost, this building is an attempt to reduce the amount of food waste produced by the city of Minneapolis sustainably. The building’s expression is inspired by an iris’ flower petals, serving as a beacon to tell insects where to land and feed on its pollen, serving as a metaphor to invite people in and eat in the double heighted and open spaces.

SHIFT ARCH 202: Design Build Studio Year: 2nd Year Type: Public Work Location: Ames, IA
Currently on the grounds of Ames Reliable Street, the following project was a design build executed by the entire class of the second year architecture program. Reliable Street, our client, is a group of Ames residents looking to create a new cafe on the edge of town. The main request of the client was to create public work that would serve as a place of both rest and play for outdoor events on the property. By stacking wood two by fours to respect the structural capabilities of the material, the structure creates a variety of spaces for both rest and play, as well as for both kids and adults.

REDIRECTION ARCH 301: Walkscape Studio Year: 3rd Year Type: Public Work Location: Ames, Iowa
With a focus on the relationship between landscape and architecture, and the concept of a linear sequence, Redirection is attempt to bring further attention to the nature found in the forest of North Ames. No module of the structure is the same in order to create a different reflection off of its reflective surface for every ten feet, keeping the individual engaged with their surroundings. With large mirrors on both its interior and exterior and a manipulated octagonal form, this structure creates reflections in order to guide the inhabitant’s vision to different key features of the landscape.

AMES PRAIRIE OBSERVATORY ARCH 301: Learning Center Studio Year: 3rd Year Type: Educational Location: Ames, Iowa Attempting to blur the barrier between building and landscape, the Ames Prairie Observatory is an experiment of how architecture can surrender to and active nature. With a form derived by the topography of the site and the split of public and private spaces, this building is a catalyst; allowing for prairie to invade the surrounding forest. Unlike the traditional prairie preserve, the building’s program glorifies what lies beneath the surface of the prairie. Through the use of extracted prairie roots, this building is a new way to bring attention to the Iowa Prairie, fully activating and surrendering to nature.

INDEPENDENT WORK Digital Photography
I believe photography to be a represention of both time and timelessness. Once taken, it is forever a representation of the experience of that moment. Each photo uses a different techinque in order to depict my diversity of digital skills. In doing so, each photo represents a different emotion, a different experience. Each of my photos are intended to give a strong presence and contextual richness to allow the viewers mind to dream and stumble upon each photo’s subtletees.
