Sprawling across the border between the towns of Barnstead and Alton in Belknap County set against the backdrop of Prospect Mountain, Halfmoon Lake is a beautiful, quiet lake in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. It stretches over a mile and a half long and about one-half mile wide. The lake covers 283 acres with a maximum depth of 29 feet and an average depth of 14.4 feet. Classified as a mesotrophic lake, it is a moderately fertile lake supporting healthy populations of fish. Pickerel, horned pout, and white perch all make their home in the lake, and anglers can try their luck against the lake’s largemouth bass. Halfmoon Lake was originally known as Crescent Lake and has been drawing visitors to enjoy clean, fish-filled waters for almost a century. Halfmoon Lake is 15 minutes from the 44,586-acre Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire’s larg-
est lake. Motor boats, fishing boats, paddle boats, canoes and kayaks are all allowed on Halfmoon Lake. There are no public beaches, but several vacation rentals have private beaches. Halfmoon Lake is also connected to 149-acre Locke Lake to the south. The border between the towns of Alton and Barnstead runs diagonally through the middle of Halfmoon Lake. and is part of the Suncook River watershed, flowing south to the Merrimack River. Established in 1796, Alton has restaurants, shops, grocery stores, and any amenity a visitor might need. It also features the only FAA approve “Iceport” where private planes can land and take off on the frozen waters of Alton Bay. Barnstead was incorporated in 1727, named for Barnstable on Cape Cod in Massachusetts and Hempstead on Long Island in New York. Further north a short drive is teh historic and charming town of Wolfeboro known as “Americas Oldest Summer Resort”. To the east is the year round mountain destination spot of Gunstock overlooking the entire Lakes Region. with excellent skiing in winter and an 8000 ft zip line in the warmer months. Mt Major is one of the most climbed mountains nearby with plenty of parking for hikers and an unsurpassed views at the top of all of Lake Winnipesaukee and the far reaches of the White Mountains beyond. The lake is approximately an hour from Concord, Portsmouth, the seacoast and the White Mountains. It is also around 90 minutes to Boston.
