he Fourth of July happens every year, same day, declaring our independence, 1776. To think 86,564 days after the original Independence Day, we still celebrate with fireworks and parades, waving the red white and blue.
F
or me, Independence Day marks a celebration of my ancestors from before Independence Day. There is Edward Travis of Jamestown, Virginia in the 1630s. Later was Commander William Barrett Travis who “drew the line in the sand” declaring “Remember the Alamo” against an unwinnable battle in 1836.
And then there’s William DT Travis, a Civil War Artist drawing battles on the fields, 1860s. He was also battling the onslaught of photographers competing with painters.
N
ow, I was too young or too old for any battle that would help the independence of
any state or even any country, though I am free because of all those who did. It is a spirit, really, that was begun by our forefathers to make us who we are today. It is an Independent Spirit.
