The Ice House on Fernald’s Basin
Welcome to our home in what began as the guest house for the historic Moody’s Ice Harvesting business in the late 1800s on Fernald’s Basin. It is a body of water created by a strip of land for the Cotton Rail Trail bringing visitors to Wolfeboro. We transformed our home into an eclectic 2 bedroom arts and craft inspired cabin with 2 bedrooms, a full bath, walk out lower level media room and laundry, and open main level living and small chefs kitchen with island, granite tops duel fuel stove and beautiful cabinets. Walls of windows frame an ever changing and always inspiring views of the Basin with Lake Wentworth and Copple Crown beyond. Plenty of level grounds, English gardens, fire pit to enjoy the good life on the lake. Use our kayaks, paddle board, and canoes. This is Mother Nature’s resting spot with all kinds of wildlife from eagles, great blue heron, otter, loons and ducks to entertain you. All this yet less than two miles to Lake Winnipesaukee and downtown Wolfeboro and in the heart of the Lakes Region. Enjoy.
What is Fernald’s Basin:
The basin is a part of the 3000+ acre Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro. In 1872 a skinny strip of land was created for a railroad track to enable the Eastern Railroad to open a branch line from Sanbornville to Wolfeboro to transport people and goods to Lake Winnipesaukee. This created Fernald’s Basin which separates us from the rest of Lake Wentworth. The track is now referred to the Cotton Rail Trail. The Basin is what our property is on.
Moody’s Ice House and the Ice Harvesting Business
In the late 1800s the basin became the sit of a thriving Ice Harvesting business until 1960. On our land is the original foundation for Moody’s Ice House. A smaller structure (now 325 Center Street) was originally the guest house for the business we are told. In the lot next door you can still see the remnants of the original foundation for the actual ice house.
Accessing the Big Lakes
From Fernald’s Basin you can easily portage a kayak or canoe to the other side of the Cotton Rail Trails onto the 3000 acre Lake Wentworth. If you have larger boats with motors on a trailer you can use the public launch just down the street for access to Lake Wentworth, There are also Two Public launches into Lake Winnipesaukee in the town of Wolfeboro a couple miles down.
