Wolfeboro is known as “America’s Oldest Summer Resort.” It has become one of America’s sought after year round destinations because of its close proximity to all the New England states. New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are big draws. It represents a town that has everything a person or family would call “the good life” with an abundance of healthy activities, natural beauty and small town charm with big town amenities.

In 1769, Governor Wentworth of England had a private road engineered through what was truly a wild wilderness from the new coastal town of Portsmouth NH to this specific area to spend his slumbering summers here. Just making the trek was enough to need a rest. Since then, generations have followed. As a result, Wolfeboro became known as “America’s Oldest Summer Resort”. The Cottages of Wolfeboro is a local treasure, a nationally Award winning and Internationally acclaimed destination comprised of 9 Charming updated Retro-style 1940’s Cottages and a meticulously maintained 18 person 1890s Victorian House known as the Cottage Caretakers Quarters, as it was owned by the son of the Historic Wolfeboro Falls Mill. This holiday park is conveniently tucked into the only private woodlands in downtown Wolfeboro, a short walk to town and Lake Winnipesaukee. Now you can Invest in little bit of Wolfeboro’s history, a town built on the shores of 44,000 acre Lake Winnipesaukee. In 1938, The Cottages of Wolfeboro began its historical cabin rental history of this great town as a place to relax from the stresses of everyday life at a time when just driving here was an adventure, and slightly dangerous. The roads of course are all modern and travel to and around all of New Hampshire a pleasure. The town center on Historic Wolfeboro Bay is just a 5-minute walk away, complete with quaint boutique shops, restaurants, ice-cream parlors, pubs, cruises, and shows. Patrons have enjoyed Retro 40’s classic Cottages and The Cottage Caretakers Quarters Victorian Home for an intimate getaway or add friends and family up to 75 people. It is a perfect destination for small family or wedding gatherings. It was fully booked even during the challenges of a Pandemic. All units have well equipped Kitchen Facilities, en-suite Bathrooms, Heat, AC & Ceiling Fans, Free WiFi, Flat Screen Cable TV’s, Individual Private Courtyards with Grills, Picnic Table, & Adirondack Chairs in front of each cottage.

The Cottages of Wolfeboro

Of Wolfeboro

Our Story First opened in 1938, a time when automobile vacations were still new, exciting, and just a little bit dangerous. Weary city dwellers could escape hot urban summers and call a little piece of the country in the Oldest Summer Resort in America. Couples and families played Horseshoes and tossed balls under tall trees, enjoyed lake pleasures, entertainments, and shopping in the village, and returned to their cottages for socializing and well-earned sleep at night. Wendy and I became the proud owners of The Cottages in the fall of 2008. Longtime residents in the area, we knew that under the worn exterior was the jewel we remembered. The Berry Cottages were opened around 1946 to welcome returning GIs and their families for inexpensive and active vacations. The individual cottages offered privacy, space for socializing and active children, and kitchen facilities to control dining expenses. Their location encouraged guests to explore and enjoy outdoor and downtown activities. As chain motels became the norm in the late 1970’s, many similar communities died out, but luckily, the Cottages survived. Wendy and I discovered sound foundations and good construction. The original cottages’ assets remain - privacy, space, and kitchen facilities. Quite honestly, the location has only gotten better. We had a ton of fun updating, painting and redecorating. FRESH & CLEAN the moment you step over the threshold, cheerful colors & patterns with a retro feel...

Wendy and David DeJager

The spirit of independent New Englanders is embodied by Lucknow, the Castle in the Clouds that rags-toriches manufacturer Tom Plant built in 1914. A short half-hour drive from The Cottages, it sits high on Bald Peak overlooking 60+ Miles of Lake Winnipesaukee. The house is a magnet for those who love the Arts and Crafts movement and relics from the Tiffany era. Its 4200 acres of conservation-protected land, monster trout ponds, and sprawling lawns are a favorite destination for hikers, artists and equestrians.

Loudon, home to NH Motor Speedway, one of the nation’s premier venues for NASCAR, is about an hour’s drive from The Cottages. This year’s schedule also includes vintage autos, motorcycles & Indy cars. Don’t limit your destination to the Speedway when you’re in the Lakes Region, though. Join in the fun of the annual Motorcycle Week; Tour the many winding river bend roads; Marvel at the perfectly restored antique cars & boats at numerous shows; board a tourist train or the Mt. Washington Cog Railway.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee and 190 years of rich history, Brewster Academy is Wolfeboro’s notorious lakeside private college preparatory boarding school. Its facilities play generous host to many groups, including summer enrichment & language programs, Arts & Crafts Festivals, the annual Huggins Hospital Street Fair, and the French and Indian War reenactment. Stars of today & tomorrow are frequently featured on the lawns & in their halls during their World Class Music Festivals.

Portsmouth, a quaint New England Atlantic port with a rich colonial history, is an hour from The Cottages. Unique shops, galleries, & restaurants line its brick sidewalks. Strawberry Banke, a living history museum, & restored mansions throughout the city invite you to experience the Portsmouth of yesteryear. Charter boats offer deep sea fishing, visits to the famous Isle of Shoals, & broad sand Beaches. Finish the day with dinner at an historical pub, a play or concert at one of the city’s fine venues.

Derived from the Abenaki Indian name, Asquam, which originally meant “the goose lake in the highlands”, Squam Lake is known as one of the most peaceful & pristine in the country. The fog rises from the water early in the morning; loons fill the air with their haunting call in this granite bottom spring fed lake just north of the Cottages. “On Golden Pond” starring Jane & Henry Fonda was primarily filmed here with Walter the “monster” fish making his debut in 1981. Take a guided tour of this hidden lake.

Lake Winnipesaukee, “Beautiful Water in a High Place” or “Smile of the Great Spirit” to the native Abenakis, is the largest lake in New Hampshire. White sand beaches, boat launches and marinas are just minutes away from The Cottages. The MS Mount Washington offers tourist & dinner cruises; you can rent motorboats, jet skis, kayaks, canoes, sailboats; and free concerts are given on its Wolfeboro shores twice weekly in summer.
