Exhibition Statement
Metropolis - what makes it iconic? Is it the culture? Is it the city's monuments? Is it the ideals and lifestyles of people who inhabit it? Or, do all these things work together to create a place that is uniquely its own? The artists explore this theme in their new work - a collection of paintings that play with everyday urban scenes, beloved icons and words. Ultimately, this exhibition is a reminder to savor our cities and look again at what we might take for granted in a new light. Matthew Vossen Frederick, Curator

Matthew Frederick Still Life I present an unconventional and amusing spin on the genre of still life painting. By abstracting from my surroundings, it is my intent to create dynamic imitations that will hopefully encourage viewers to look and examine with a fresh perspective. Inspired by my amusement for so many trite paintings of “Bad Icons that have been done over and over. I feel like I can recapture your attention and shed new light. I define and exaggerate the whimsical shadows and shapes transforming a stale image into beautiful new view.

Views from the Studio My paintings are figurative abstractions of either the human form or a specific place. I work from my own source material: photographs, sketches and plein air renderings of things I see on my travels. I translate this material into oil paintings over the course of many months in my studio. During the painting process the original object becomes obscured and less important, allowing something new and separate to emerge. The final painting is a record of my relationship to the process of painting itself, and marks the moment where subject becomes object and is on with the viewer.

Metropolis This series of work speaks to the iconic images that define the great metropolitan cities of the world. From architecture and language, to cultural objects and colors, each piece is a memory of my past experiences and associations with these cities, and the recognizable imagery that uniquely identifies their global individuality.

Urban This latest series reveals my Impression of our city centers. Clear blue skies mirrored on gleaming towers mingled with the exhaust stained patinas of towering concrete structures. The new and old. Futuristic crystalline high-rises contrast with the grey underbelly of the metropolis. Gesso, watercolor and acrylics are sandwiched between layers of epoxy resin on wood panels giving the pieces a sense of depth.
