Heavily depending to the island of Ortigia, which constitutes its symbolic imagery, Syracuse expanded in the modern era into the ancient fortified city walls, but unrelated to the old fabric. The wall’s ring, developed for almost thirty kilometers, is now a blank space surrounding a part of the town without characterisation. Along with Ortigia and the archaeological area of Neapolis, they will form an Archaeological Park of exceptional importance and magnitude.

Master of thesis

The thesis aims to show how this Park could not only be a device for heritage protection, but an unmissable opportunity for economic, cultural, urban and social improvement of the entire city of Syracuse. Reflecting on this heritage and investigating its possibilities in terms of economic, social and above all urban improvement, the thesis want to turn this area into the key for the organization and the regeneration of the city. A productive infrastructure, where the potential of the area are concentra-

ted. A matrix of the urban structure, focusing on the services that are missing and imagining a temporary and strategic urban planning, complementary to the traditional urbanism “thought to last. The ancient wall becomes a development engine for the entire region. It is established as the link giving strength to the system, embracing and connecting the city, on the one hand with the potential of the territory around it, on the other with the city, enclosed and confined inside. The project aims to define a methodological approach to make the archaeological site an economic and, above all, social resource, providing guidelines for the construction and sharing of an Urban Park-Archaeological, able to offer the urban quality that is a right of every citizen, promising an active heritage protection and services for who live the city every day.

SPEED FIBER Europan12 _ Competition

XL year: 2013 place: Amstetten typology: urban regeneration completed with: Tomas Ghisellini architetti Giacomo Quercia Lucrezia Alemanno Matteo Viciani

Our proposal takes a radical decision focusing on the critical interaction between the extraordinary landscape system, that allows Amstetten to enjoy a clearly privileged environmental status, and a strategic program related to the management of leisure in terms of entertainment, culture, sports and innovative social interaction tied to supra-regional scale major events. Amstetten will capture motion flows and energies and direct them to an alternative city offer built around collective well-being (care of body and mind, spiritual health) and on landscape heritage regeneration. A wide open fibrous environmental system, reproduced as for tissue-regeneration starting from the ribs of the railway, joins all project areas together into a not purely ideal continuity: green, water, forest, sand, wood, built, dug into the ground or suspended in mid-air fibers create such an unusual and unconventional artificial landscape system that expands liquidly to all areas simultaneously representing for them a large-scale crossing system, an experimentation and discovery instrument.

OFFICINA DELL’ARTE 2nd year design studio

L year: 2010 place: Milan typology: urban regeneration completed with: Giacomo Moretti Giacomo Quercia Matteo Viciani tutor: arch. Alfonso Femia

The project is located in the Lambrate district, on the outskirts of northeastern Milan, characterized by a strong industrialization, which even today remains the indelible marks on the territory. The key idea was to reuse the industrial building on the lot intervention, avoiding demolitions but declining it to another function. The shift is from the industrial production to the artistic creation: the Officine dell’arte, an education , experimentation and artistic production centre, arise from this will. The new buildings are built around the pre-existence, considered the core of the project, where a small auditorium, a museum and an art school are integrated. Outside, a big square with pools of water and a park mediate the relationship between the other buildings tand the

pre-existence. The court typologies derive create a system of secondary squares that revolve around the main central area, characterized by different spaces both in quality and features. The southern court hosts art workshops on the ground floor and residences on the upper floors. The eastern court is instead characterized by a music school, a library and a bar on the ground floor, with residences on the upper floors of buildings. The north building provides a student halls with minimal accommodation, canteen and library. The project focuses on the city’s ability to reuse and reinvent the spaces of their past by creating places of exchange. They are meeting places of the city, where the public and the private are in close contact.

MULTIVERSE Contenuti per un contenitore _ Competition 2rd PRIZE M year: 2011 place: San Giorgio di Pesaro typology: sustainable refreshment completed with: Francesco Tonnarelli Lucrezia Alemanno tutor: arch. Paola Boarin eng. Sante Mazzacane

Refurbishing the old cinema of a provincial town in the center of italy, SanGiorgio di Pesaro, offers the opportunity to transform an inhomogeneous agglomerate into an urban space, as to create a new municipal centrality and rediscover civic identity. The intervention’s goal is to define a space able to offer places really usable and perceptable. A big effort has been made to understand the process of incorporating environmental issues into planning, design and constuction, favoring local and low-emission materials, and increading green areas against heat-island effect.

As for the old and abandoned cinema, the municipality aimed for a multipurpose building able to host a conference hall for the town council, a cinema, an exibition hall. Flexibility is the main object of the architectural program. Inside the old walls an inner volume of movable partition allow the wider and most free use of the space. The project focus on the building’s performance, that is, developing a design capable of providing occupant comfort at lowest carbon emission: understanding the building as a system and optimizing the interrelationships of the various components of that system to best meet the needs of the end users.

KEEPER’S HOUSE “Meno di 31” _ Competition - Finalist

S year: 2015 typology: housing completed with: Francesco Tonnarelli Giacomo Moretti Giacomo Quercia Matteo Viciani

The project area requires a contextual and accurate approach. The project is related to the characteristic features of the context as the closeness of the restored villa , the predominant character of nature and the slope of the land. It is affected in its technical and compositional aspects. The building covers the lot and structure, spaces and openings are designed to accentuate the transverse orientation and visual relationships dictated from outside. The morphology of the site, sloping north-south axis, is resolved with a reinforced concrete base, hosting the deposit, that detaches the building from the ground and identify the plan sets of units. The choice to use structural plywood panels (xlam) foreshadows a clean construction yard and rapid execution to confirm a specific attention to rhe site. Excavation of land and accommodation of the outdoor spaces are resolved in

compensation. Judicious technological choices, such as those described above, allow the realization of quality finishes, in traditional plaster and hight property wood, increasing the standard of living inside and the durability of materials, staying in the limits required by economic announcement. The search for detail and quality material finishes guarantee a direct relationship between inside and outside: the traditional plaster, coarse, is used inside and outside, without compromise, to accentuate the spatial continuity, focal point of the project . There are facilities connections to the voltage source itself, thanks to the installation of heat pumps eliminating the supply via fossil sources and fuels. The floor heating system guarantees a high living comfort with heating and air conditioned. The building is reminiscent of the pavilion, for lightness, simplicity and the development of a single ‘floor’. This plan, tilted, turned and scale, constitutes the hard base of the building,

TREErre. A different tree TREE ciclo _ Competition Honorable Mention

XS year: 2014 typology: artistic installation completed with: Andrea Baldacci Francesco Tonnarelli Giacomo Moretti Giacomo Quercia Matteo Viciani

Approching the competition of a Christmas Tree for the main square of Siracusa, our design aims to overcome the traditional, purely ornamental decoration. The proposal consist in an installation capable of interacting with the users of the square. At the same time, a spectacular device aims at engaging them in an educative experience, through forms and actions. The projects revolves around the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle )as the basis of any environmental sustainability and integrated resource management. 1. Reduction The morphology of the tree is reduced to the most basic: a triangle. The structure consists of three frames, independent during the assemblage, allowing the on-ground decoration of the tree, without the use of platforms. This also makes possible the involvement of citizens, meeting in a community moment for the public installation. 2. Reuse The structure consists of scaffolding pipes, versatile and com-

pletely reusable. The frame is then decorated with recycled plastic bottles, an easy to find, lightweight material, capable of transforming the simple geometry of the tree in a luminous and evocative surface. These decorations are mounted on a welded mesh using cable ties. 3.Ricicle The tree is associated with a micro-collection recycle station. Four containers: glass, plastic, aluminum, paper, are equipped with sensors that, when a refuse is trashed, light up the illuminations of the associated color. The simple act of throwing waste is transformed into a direct interaction with the installation, and metaphorically in light for the community, an implicit reference to the family ritual of decorating the Christmas tree. A panel explains the installation, and A QR code links the user to a dedicated website, where the data provided by the station are collected and made available. At the top of a tree illuminated globe remarks the importance of the 3Rs globally.

wandering cabin 24h Nowadays Nomadays _ Competition

XXS year: 2015 typology: minimal housing completed with: Francesco Tonnarelli

Our wandering cabin reduces the project to a trailer chassis. To balance the desire for flexibility and dynamism with the limited resources at its disposal, it uses the territory to its own advantage. The innermost space is the chassis itself, furnishing the house with just the right amount of interior space. In less than 8m2 a minimal bathroom and a basic cooking space are provided. Foldable bed and table allow for the greatest adaptability of the tiny inner space, which can shift from a bedroom to a living. The volume is energetically self-sufficient thanks to the solar panels on the roof and an integrated water collection system. The roof let in fresh air currents and provides ventilation. Once opened, the shutters act as brise soleil blocking out the

blazing sun. Most of daily routines can be performed outside, living her way through a territory along a route that starts at the cabin in the morning and ends up there as well in the evening. The volume unfolds into a multi-functional stall incorporating different areas. These outer “rooms” act as neither a fully interior nor exterior space. On one side, the inner room unfolds into a gradual threshold from the intimacy of the bed to the exterior landscape. On the other side, a simple movable partition reveals a whiteboard on its back, and with the simple use of a fabric canopy develops into a pop-up school. Sheltered from the sun, this space effectively triples the project’s surface and functions as an inhabitable exterior class room.
