Activities
The Voices Network is growing fast. Every teacher training receives requests from schools to join the network. A network allows them to feel strong and to better cope with the challenges of the continuously changing educational field. In 2014, 40 teachers from partner schools will get the chance to professionalize in Graz and Barcelona. They will then share their experiences with fellow colleagues and students. The thematic and national groups sustain a close collaboration. They are all preparing for the Derby conference in fall of 2014. In this second newsletter we will give you a preview of this exciting event.

The Palacký University of Olomouc is the oldest university in Moravia and the second-oldest in the Czech Republic. It was established in 1573 as a public university led by the Jesuit order in Olomouc, which was at that time the capital of Moravia and the seat of the episcopacy. At first it taught only theology, but soon the fields of philosophy, law and medicine were added.
Activities undertaken within the network.
After the Bohemian King Joseph II's reforms in the 1770s the University became increasingly state-directed, while today it is a public university. During the Revolution of 1848 University students and professors played a very active role on the side of democratisation. The conservative King Francis Joseph I closed most of its faculties during the 1850s, but they were reopened by an act of the Interim National Assembly passed on 21 February 1946. This act also extended the name from University of Olomouc to Palacký University of Olomouc, naming it for František Palacký, a 19th-century Moravian historian and politician. We mainly work with 2 schools. Základní škola Olomouc, Heyrovského 33 is a Czech primary and lower-secondary school.
The school offers its pupils several ways of specializations according to their talent, interests and needs. The school is open to the international cooperation being involved in the Comenius projects since 2003. Their aim is to enrich the lives of the students and the teachers by making contacts with other European schools to learn about various cultures, languages and strengthening their ICT skills and improve the command of the foreign languages in doing so. http://www. zsheyrovskeho .cz Contactperson :Ludmila Balikova:balikova@email.cz The elementary school Jeřice / Hořice is the smallest school in the region. Spanish National Group Our group is formed by 11 Primary Schools, and 7 Teacher Trainers in the urban region of Barcelona. We are a big group used to working together on European programmes. During 2013, we met on a regular basis in order to ensure that all members were fully informed about the Network and to prepare for the Conference held in Brussels last March. One of the main goals of our group is to increase the involvement of all members and to ensure our work has an impact in the schools. Two working groups have emerged from the National team and are currently carrying out projects based on the concepts of VOICES. The first group is working on the use of the European Language Portfolio (ELP), a document that has been evaluated as a good learning tool but that has not been as successful as might be expected. The group is currently analysing its low level of use and will discuss possible adaptations. To this end, an online survey has been disseminated among local schools to find out about whether it is being used and general attitudes towards the ELP. Thus far 283 have been collected. The working group has also invited an experienced teacher whose school has integrated an adapted use of the ELP to speak to the group (the session was videotaped for further reference).
The second working group is carrying out a project around the concepts of diversity, identity and citizenship through theoretical aspects as well as the analysis of good experiences and practices. Both groups will bring these debates to their school meetings. On a more global level, the National Group has agreed to develop school projects based on identity, diversity and citizenship through objects and artefacts, places and spaces with which the children identify themselves, and serve as projection of their personal futures. This project will be shared with other European schools within the Network. The pupils will exchange ideas, work, and images through the use of English as a lingua franca although they will also present their mother tongue to their partners while learning a bit of the diverse languages of their partners.

Citizenship Education: Our “Road to Derby” Ten Months after the VOICEs kickoff Meeting, the Citizenship Education group finally accomplished the first phase set up in Brussels: defining our “theoretical framework”. We tried to synthesize this framework by writing A geographical issue : the contribution of Citizenship Education to the building of a European citizenship. The case of the Voices Comenius networks, a research paper published by “J – Reading” in 2013 (http://www.jreading.org/index.php/geography/a rticle/view/37/55). Promoting Citizenship Education (CE) across Europe means first of all considering Citizenship CE as a social practice and, at the same time, considering schools as the places where these social practices happen. For these reasons, up to Derby 2014, our group will focus on two quests. First of all we will search into national texts, curricula and guidelines where and how this idea of CE is mentioned, proposed and emphasized. Our group covers five school systems (UK, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain), so we can concentrate on a set of illustrative National contexts. Furthermore, as Italy, Belgium and Spain are represented by more than one member, our deal is to take advantage of this fact.
Secondly we will search a number of case studies coming from the Countries we cover. These case studies could be projects, actions, programs developed in a primary or secondary school, able to show how teachers work on CE in their own social contexts and how teachers can achieve their own role of sociopolitical actors engaged in this mission. The challenge we would like to launch, and of course to discuss, in Derby 2014 is: “How can we as European Teachers promote concrete actions to show Citizenship as a social practice at local, national and European level?” Stefano Malatesta

“Hello from the University of Derby. The focus of this little contribution to the second VoiceS newsletter is our next conference. As you know, the University of Derby is hosting the conference in October and this gives me a great deal to think about! I am very happy that there is a University of Derby conference team who are helping me, as this would be too much for one person to manage. We are at a good place with our planning and will be able to open the registration quite soon.

The hard work for this event was, as we know, carried out by Bart and Michele when they hosted the first conference in Brussels. This provided the format for what was to follow. Maybe Milan will follow the same template? We shall see! The broad outline is going to be starting with a welcome to all delegates (our ProVice-Chancellor is going to give a short address) on Thursday. We have a provisional starting time of 17.00, which should allow us plenty of time for a nice evening and an opportunity to mix business and pleasure. The delegate hotel is quite close to the venue for Thursday evening, right in the centre of the city for those of you who still have energy to explore.
The following day, as you expect, is work, work and more work. We plan to use the University teacher training block for Friday and Saturday events. It is well equipped, with plenty of opportunities for work. We will have a welcome from one of our Education Professors, my good friend and colleague Des Hewitt. Some of you may know Des already. We will then have an opportunity to work in our Thematic Field groups and catch up with progress. Of course, there is going to be discussion and debate: many voices, with an expectation that we will be keen to learn and listen to each other. The objective here will be to make something that is currently unconstructed, into something that has shape and form. To turn the ideas that have been explored in the literature of each Thematic Field, into something that can be used to examine what it means to be a European Teacher / Practitioner. This is no small task, but each group will need to move from the abstract to the concrete at this time. Each Thematic Field is “ploughing its own furrow” and yet there is an expectation that ideas will begin to crystallize by the end of our time together.

The evening planned will be a pleasant one, with a visit to a local restaurant in the city centre. You will be pleased to know that Derby is a small city and almost all our activities will be confined to a small geographical zone. This suits our student population too! The following morning will be an opportunity to have a choice of activity. You will either be able to carry on working on your Thematic Field or go on a visit to a local historic house called Kedleston Hall, home of the Curzon family. It dates from 1765 and features much work by the architect Robert Adam. It is managed by the National Trust. The university has a good relationship with Kedleston Hall and I am confident that they will make us very welcome.
