As autumn embraces us, there’s an undeniable allure in snuggling under a soft blanket beside a crackling fire on a chilly evening. Fireplaces, those timeless marvels, have woven themselves into the fabric of homes, a tradition that endures even in our modern age. Yet, the evolution of fireplace design and utility has been a journey marked by ingenuity and adaptability, offering an array of indoor and outdoor options to suit diverse lifestyles. So, whether you’re poised to introduce a brand-new fireplace to your abode or patio or seeking inspiration to elevate your current fireplace, here’s a contemplative guide to consider. The Essence of Ambiance: Traditional or Contemporary Fireplace style is a canvas upon which you paint your cozy retreat. The choice between a traditional or contemporary design is a pivotal one. Traditional fireplaces give timeless charm, often with a stone that transforms a room into a rustic haven. On the other hand, contemporary fireplaces draw inspiration from sleek European aesthetics, boasting features like linear flames that dance in unison. The Elemental Decision: Wood, Gas, or Electric Wood fireplaces are designed for those craving an authentic experience. Not only do they cast a mesmerizing glow, but they may also offer the added benefit of reducing your heating bill. Modern meets convenience with gas fireplaces. With the press of a button, they instantly ignite and radiate warmth. Simplicity reigns supreme when it comes to electric fireplaces. Installation is a breeze, and operation is effortless. The Financial Framework: Budget Matters Budget considerations play a pivotal role in your fireplace journey. Options abound, from economically functional basic models to premium units with all the bells and whistles, promising home comfort. Your budget becomes the compass guiding you through the endless choices, ensuring your desires align with your financial aspirations. As you embark on this journey of warmth and coziness, remember that the selection of a fireplace is a profound decision, one that can transform your living space into a sanctuary of comfort and charm. For Tony Leggett, many of his memories are encompassed in fireplaces.

Part of what he taught Tony – be prepared and productive in all seasons.

“My parents started Fireplace Professionals back in 1981 and I was involved from the first day. I have three younger sisters and they’re all involved too. As we grew up, it just became a part of our life.

wood-burning stoves. If someone is designing their home and they want to add a fireplace, we encourage them to follow the guidelines, which we know like the back of our hands. So, we can advise them on how to install one safely.” Gas fireplaces have also become increasingly popular as well over the years, as have additional safety features. “We know a lot of people have a fear of gas. It’s our job to make sure we teach them how to operate the product the way the manufacturer intended. People are also concerned about kids burning their hands on the glass, but regulations have changed over the years and a lot of new ones have safety features built in to prevent that.” That safety is even more important as the number of people wanting fireplaces in their homes continues to rise. “They’re really, excuse the pun, the hot thing to sell,” jokes Tony. “Most people would actually like to see more fireplaces in their homes. And that might surprise some people because you wonder where else besides the family room – the living room – would you put one? Of course, those are the most popular but we are seeing a lot of people request fireplaces from their backyards to their bathrooms. There’s a lot of products out there, like electric fireplaces, that make that possible.” And just like every other technology, hearth products continue to evolve as well. “I really feel one of our many responsibilities to our customers is to see that technology as it comes out. We are really well positioned in Sioux Falls to see a lot of that as it hits the market, especially from Minneapolis. A lot of people are always trying to come up with the most realistic product similar to a true wood-burning fireplace. There is some really exciting technology coming, especially from a company called Hearth & Homes Technologies. So, we are definitely keeping our eyes on that.” One thing you can count on, Fireplace Professionals will be there for you. “If you buy something from us, you can fully count on us talking with you again in the future. We want to keep providing exceptional customer service and keep our communities warm and prepared.”

How to Prepare Your Fireplace for Fall and Winter wwww.FindHomeIdeas.com n 25

Nothing is cozier than unwinding on the sofa on a winter night as you enjoy the warmth of your fireplace. But before you “fire it up,” here are a few things to know about setting up your fireplace for fall and winter. Schedule an Inspection Every Year At the bare minimum, it’s important to have your chimney inspected and cleaned by a professional company once a year. A thorough cleaning gets rid of creosote buildup, which refers to an oily and flammable burnt wood residue. This step helps to protect your home and ensures that your fireplace functions at its best. Spot Signs of Cracks and Damage Another way to prepare your fireplace for fall and winter is by checking for signs of cracks or other damage. Look for unstable joints, as well as any external damage to the masonry. Then, work with a professional mason to fix the issues. It’s not a good idea to DIY chimney and fireplace repairs. It shouldn’t be repaired with an ordinary mortar either, since the blend won’t withstand high levels of heat. Check the Chimney Cap and Damper How do you make sure that the chimney cap and damper are still working properly? The first thing to do is to determine if the cap is attached firmly to the unit. If there’s no dirt or debris buildup or any pests in the chimney, that’s a good sign. For the damper, check if it opens and closes the way it’s supposed to. Clean the Firebox and Ashes Your firebox needs a thorough cleaning as well. First, you’ll need to remove anything you find inside the firebox, and also make sure the coals have cooled down completely. Then, remove the ash through a powerful vacuum. Store the ash inside a sealed metal container in case you want to recycle it. You can keep a small amount of ash to help you start a fire more easily. But other than that, ash has several purposes. You can use it as an alternative backyard fertilizer, in compost piles or garden beds, as an ice dissolver and even a fireplace door cleaner. Get Rid of Limbs It’s lovely to live in a home that’s surrounded by greenery, but overhanging tree limbs can cover your chimney. If that’s the case, it’s best to trim them. Tree limbs can block the chimney draft and spoil the cap.

How to Set Up a Gas-Burning Fireplace Clean the Blower Does your gas-burning fireplace have a blower? If so, it needs to be cleaned before the colder seasons. Because they don’t have an efficient filtering system, they’re prone to buildup. For instance, dust buildup won’t only cause wear-and-tear on the bearings, but will also stop the motor from cooling properly. The last thing you want to happen is a motor failure, which requires a costly repair. Replace the Batteries A gas-burning fireplace needs a regular battery replacement. For the best performance, take care of this before each season on your remote, transmitters and receivers, as well as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Preparing your fireplace for fall and winter is essential. It can improve the air quality of your home and keep it warm and cozy, save more energy and even prevent house fires. Courtesy of HubPages

CREATING A

MUDROOM FIT FOR WINTER

B Y : VA N E S S A C A R L S O N B E N D E R

During the months when the world is cold, wet and snowy, you may begin to wish that you had a mudroom. A mudroom is a place where everyone who comes into the home can wipe their feet, drop off their shoes or boots and remove their soaked hats and jackets and any other winter or outdoor gear to keep outside from coming in. Does this sound like something that your home needs? Here are some tips to create the perfect mudroom in your home.

Give it space. The mudroom should be a room that is accessible from the outside. The goal is to leave the mess here so you don’t have to go through another room to get to it, therefore keeping the house dry and clean. You may choose an entire room for your mudroom (like a garage, basement entry or a closed-in porch). Alternatively, you can turn a portion of the room into the mudroom (such as the tiled entryway of the foyer or kitchen by the door). Start from the ground up. The ideal mudroom has floors that are easy to clean with a simple mop-up. This area is going to get really wet, snowy and dirty. It will probably need to be cleaned daily during the winter months. You don’t want to have to get down on your hands and knees and scrub every time you clean it, so make sure that the floor is right for a mudroom. Concrete, tile and linoleum are the easiest to clean. If the area that you’ve selected for your mudroom doesn’t have easy-to-clean flooring, lay out rugs, drying mats and boot racks. Getting your foot in the door. Make sure that you’ve added a durable rug to the mudroom area right inside (and maybe outside too) of the door so feet can be wiped as soon as people come in. Use a washable rug, ideally in a darker color so it doesn’t have to be cleaned as often. Waiting for the shoe to drop. It’s important that once individuals enter your home and wipe their feet, they should also have a place where snowy, wet shoes and boots can be removed. Consider installing a storage cubby or set of cubes – just place a microfiber cloth inside each cubby to trap excess water and dirt.

For smaller spaces, shoe and boot racks with a mud tray underneath work nicely and help them dry much quicker. Hang it out to dry. After a long day in wintry weather, you will need somewhere to hang wet coats, snow pants, hats, scarves and mittens so they can air out and dry off efficiently. Typically, it includes a coat rack, a hat rack and a mitten rack. There are many DIY tricks you can try for these as well. Wet and snowy clothes go here during the winter months and wet swimsuits can be hung up when it’s warmer out. Off the hook. You will need additional space for hanging up items that aren’t wet but are designed for cold weather. Coats, hats, scarves and even bookbags can be organized neatly on these hooks so they are ready to go later and have a designated spot to store them. Put all your (storage) in one basket…or two. Use containers that are weather-resistant to store extra hats, gloves, scarves and outdoor toys. No need to break out in a cold sweat when someone says they can’t find their gloves or left their hat on the bus. Deck the halls…including the mudroom. The mudroom is indeed a great place for storing winter gear and shedding wet clothes, but it is also the first thing people see when they walk into your home. Add a decorative touch with fun-colored rugs, stylish cabinetry or cubes, attractive baskets or storage solutions and maybe even some wall décor. Whatever you do, make it yours with both function and style!
