Learning for the future

Welcome to Your Continuing Education

One of the strengths of Continuing Education at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN is our focus on you - our individual learners from local, provincial, national and international organizations. Executive Vice-President, Education The Michener Institute of Education at UHN and University Health Network

Maria Tassone

Sr. Director, Collaborative and Transformative Learning, The Michener Institute of Education at UHN

2018 marks the 60th anniversary of The Michener Institute. Not only is Michener one of the oldest colleges in Ontario and the only school to have integrated fully with a Canadian hospital, it is rapidly becoming one of the most important centres for continuing education for health care professionals. A great benefit of our integration with University Health Network has been the broadening of continuing education programs to include the full range of health professions, such as nursing and medicine as well as the applied health sciences for which the school has long been known. This greater array of professions is setting the stage for enhanced team-based learning in areas such as interprofessional education, leadership and patient safety — both locally and internationally. A new and huge opportunity was the confidence shown by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in awarding Michener accredited status this year for its programs. At a time when health care is rapidly transformed by disruptive technologies, digitization and the emergence of artificial intelligence and robotics, Michener is positioning itself to be a Canadian leader in helping health professionals grapple with these transformations and put them into dayto-day practice. Look through this brochure for an exciting series of new courses to help you learn for the future.

This test is referenced to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and MELA scores are used by post-secondary institutions and regulatory bodies as approved and acceptable demonstration of communicative competence to study or practice in English. MELA measures English language communication skills in four areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The test takes about three and a half hours. MELA is administered at The Michener Institute. There are several testing sessions each year. If requested, MELA can also be offered in-person anywhere in Canada.

Interprofessional Care: Advancing the Future of Health Care through Interprofessional Learning In Canada and abroad, government and health care sectors have placed importance on developing a curriculum to change the way health professionals are educated and trained. This program will enhance your natural leadership abilities to teach excellence in Interprofessional Education (IPE), helping to build an IPE community of leaders in health care. Coordinated by the Centre for Interprofessional Education and a team of health professionals across the health sciences faculties at the University of Toronto, this certificate program is designed for health professionals interested in interprofessional education and interprofessional practice. This program aims to develop leaders in interprofessional education who have the knowledge, skills and attitudes to teach both learners and fellow colleagues the art and science of working collaboratively for patient-centered care. Participants are selected through a call for application process whereby they must submit a 250 word abstract of an interprofessional project/activity that they hope to undertake.
