Teaching and Learning for a Healthier World

We are your partner in lifelong learning F

or 60 years, lifelong learning and professional development have been at the heart of our work at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. Our humble beginnings in the basement of Toronto General Hospital in 1958 was the spark lit by our founder, Dr. Diana Michener Schatz, to provide medical laboratory technologists in Toronto and the Province of Ontario with professional development that would establish them as critical contributors to health care delivery, quality and safety. Today, as part of Canada’s largest teaching and research hospital (University Health Network, or UHN), the Department of Continuing Education (CE) at Michener continues in Dr. Schatz’s tradition by reinforcing our commitment to health education by creating programs for you – the busy professionals we rely on to deliver compassionate and safe care. As Canada’s only “school

within a hospital, we are positioned better than ever to bring cutting edge and meaningful learning to a variety of health care providers across the country and the world. At Michener, we believe in teaching and learning for a healthier world, and we collaborate interprofessionally with educators and practitioners to bring you courses and programs that demonstrate this philosophy. We also recognize the importance of flexibility to adult learners who lead busy lives and careers. Michener is excited to partner with you in your lifelong learning by designing and delivering programs you can participate in anywhere and anytime online, including a suite of continuous, self-study courses you can complete at your own pace as you accelerate your career goals. This year, we are also pleased to have launched many new ways for you to stay connected with us on social media. You can follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to stay up-to-date on what’s new in health care education, stay connected to exciting news from CE at Michener and, most importantly, for us to hear from you about your interests, successes and suggestions for our team. We welcome you to our 2019-20 academic year and we wish you success in your programs of choice and in your career aspirations. To learn more, contact uhnice@uhn.ca

Based at Toronto General Hospital, the UHN International Centre for Education™ (ICE) is home to UHN’s observershipbased programming and hosts learners from over 50 countries annually. ICE works with teachers across many program areas at UHN to create custom learning programs, and to build capacity for teaching and learning with internationally educated health professionals through partnership and collaboration. ICE’s programs are catered to individuals and small groups working at many different intersections of health care. Observerships These are short-term opportunities for clinical and administrative professionals to visit and observe in different areas of UHN hospitals. Personalized Learning Program™ The Personalized Learning Program™ (PLP) allows you to learn about how our work is done at UHN, and is geared to any kind of health care provider or administrator who is seeking to gain exposure to various practices in Canada’s largest academic research hospital. These programs are created based on your unique learning objectives, and help you to build networks and community with world-renowned clinicians and leaders at UHN. Teaching, Learning and Cultural Humility Teaching, Learning and Cultural Humility is a workshop focusing on practical approaches to supporting and optimizing the learning relationship between an internationally educated learner and a teacher/educator responsible for transferring knowledge in their local context. Teaching and learning is a culturally informed experience and process. This makes us aware of considerations that can influence the success of international learners, including acknowledging nuances in teacher-learner power dynamics, setting goals and expectations, as well as giving and receiving feedback. Critical to this process is an understanding and practice of cultural humility as a reflective process honouring learning relationships with individuals (versus focusing on cultural competence) as a means to enhance the educational experience.
