Welcome to the School of Continuing Education F Maria Tassone, MSc, BScPT
or 60 years, lifelong learning and professional development have been at the heart of our work at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. Our humble beginnings in the basement of Toronto General Hospital in 1958 was the spark lit by our founder, Dr. Diana Michener Schatz, to provide medical laboratory technologists in Toronto and the Province of Ontario with professional development that would establish them as critical contributors to health care delivery, quality and safety. Today, as part of Canada’s largest teaching and research hospital (University Health Network, or UHN), Michener’s School of Continuing Education (SCE) continues in Dr. Schatz’s tradition by reinforcing our commitment to health education by creating programs for you – the busy professionals we rely on to deliver compassionate and safe care. At Michener, we believe in teaching and learning for a healthier world, and we collaborate interprofessionally with educators and practitioners to bring you courses and programs that demonstrate this philosophy. As the country’s only “school within a hospital,” Michener is a community of educators who deliver cutting edge and

meaningful learning to a variety of health care providers nationally and internationally. Our responsiveness to system needs, such as those emergent during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, have pushed our boundaries of educational innovation to include virtual consulting, and adaptation of some certificate programs to ensure seamless experiences for our learners. SCE is excited to partner with you in your lifelong learning by designing and delivering programs you can participate in anywhere and anytime online, including a suite of continuous, self-study courses you can complete at your own pace as you accelerate your career goals. We welcome you to our 2020-21 academic year and we wish you success in your programs of choice and professional aspirations. All the best,

CE works with educational designers and subject matter experts to create accessible course content that leverages different learning methods. You can register for a series of certificates and courses offered online, in-person and, in some cases, with flexible timelines. FACILITATED COURSES – ONLINE Facilitated courses start at specific times throughout the year and usually run for about 12 weeks, or one semester. Online facilitators help you learn throughout the course from week to week, and include various assessment components to help solidify your learning. This includes many specialty courses, certificate courses and webinars. SELF-STUDY COURSES – ONLINE Self-Study courses are open for registration any time throughout the year. Complete a course at your own pace and within one year of registration. This flexible option gives you control over how long you spend learning online, and tutors are available virtually to answer your questions and guide you through the course. At Michener, most self-study options are online. CLASSROOM-BASED COURSES Some courses are offered exclusively in a classroom or require hands-on, simulated practice to ensure you acquire both the knowledge and skills you need to be successful. SCE runs many workshops, such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and in topics including conflict resolution and cultural humility. HYBRID COURSES Hybrid courses are designed to deliver content online, and have in-person, classroom components to reinforce learning. Classroom-based instruction paired with online learning also has the added benefit of meeting your peers and instructors face-to-face.

hase 1 of this newly built state of the art centre will be opening in the Fall of 2020 and will contain a fullsize OR simulation lab, a 10 bay self directed skills lab with 24/7 access, telementoring and telesimulation suites, along with classroom space and an innovation hub. The centre will feature a broad range of educational programming to support learners in capacity building and bridging the gap between knowledge and practice. A focus on technology as a key enabler was designed into every space which provides not only broadcasting capabilities but also unique session recording for faculty evaluation and feedback. Research into current literature and education best practices have been foundational in creating programming. Our team leveraged research in education to develop an innovative education model for the Surgical Education Institutes that features a longitudinal learning path, designed to deliver comprehensive learning for surgeons across a range of sub-specialty programs. Education in robotics and research in artificial intelligence are among some of the planned activities that will be starting in the Fall. A website with all program offerings will be coming soon.

UHN International Centre for Education™ Based at Toronto General Hospital, the UHN International Centre for Education™ (ICE) is home to UHN’s observership-based programming and hosts learners from over 50 countries annually. ICE works with teachers across many program areas at UHN to create custom learning programs, and to build capacity for teaching and learning with internationally educated health professionals through partnership and collaboration. ICE’s programs are catered to individuals and small groups working at many different intersections of health care. Observerships These are short-term opportunities for clinical and administrative professionals to visit and observe in different areas of UHN hospitals. Personalized Learning Program™ The Personalized Learning Program™ (PLP) allows you to learn about how our work is done at UHN, and is geared to any kind of health care provider or administrator who is seeking to gain exposure to various practices in Canada’s largest academic research hospital. These programs are created based on your unique learning objectives and help you to build networks and community with world-renowned clinicians and leaders at UHN. Teaching, Learning and Cultural Humility Teaching, Learning and Cultural Humility is a workshop focusing on practical approaches to supporting and optimizing the learning relationship between an internationally educated learner and a teacher/ educator responsible for transferring knowledge in their local context. Teaching and learning is a culturally informed experience and process. This makes us aware of considerations that can influence the success of international learners, including acknowledging nuances in teacher-learner power dynamics, setting goals and expectations, as well as giving and receiving feedback. Critical to this process is an understanding and practice of cultural humility as a reflective process honouring learning relationships with individuals (versus focusing on cultural competence) as a means to enhance the educational experience.
