WELCOME TO THE SCHOOL OF CONTINUING EDUCATION A word from our Executive Director, on behalf of the Senior Management Team at the School of Continuing Education
W
elcome to the School of Continuing Education at Michener/UHN. We are excited to, once again, share with you a diversity of online, hybrid and classroom-based programs from Canada’s only School within a health care network spanning community, primary, hospital, rehabilitation and long-term care.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a ripple effect around the world, across sectors, and certainly in our practice as teachers and administrators. The health professions education and post-secondary education communities have been challenged to accommodate various requirements of physical distancing in adherence to public health and government guidelines. This has included the very daunting task to transitioning a myriad of programs to virtual platforms, and thinking through innovative approaches to facilitate and administer programs where live simulation is critical.

Many of our courses and programs in the School of Continuing Education (SCE) have been available online for several years, and this has been our primary mode of delivery. We have, however, needed to think nimbly about how we could continue to bring to our learners essential offerings like life support programs (e.g. ACLS and PALS), or how workshop-based elements in hybrid programming (e.g. Diabetes Educator and Critical Care Nursing) could be virtualized. The program staff and our faculty have worked many hours to help us achieve what seemed both intimidating and impossible at a time when our resources were stretched, and our wellness and resilience were tested by the pandemic. Our SCE family at the UHN hospitals also saw many successes as they navigated the challenges of virtualization. For example, highly social programming like Collaborative Change Leadership was brought online with great success and accolades. Our Conference Services team reimagined their entire model and converted several large, in-person events into online conferences sometimes scaled in the hundreds. This included advising our own internal team to bring the carefully crafted Convergence2021 online. Our International Centre for Education reimagined their Personalized Learning Program to a series of virtual mentorship offerings. During all of this, we welcomed our newest SCE unit member the de Souza Institute, focused on oncology and palliative care, and leveraged their incredible skills in digital education technologies and online learning to advance many new areas of work.

The innovation did not stop there. In the last year, the SCE has been a key partner to hospitals, the Ministry of Health and Ontario Health in their response to the pandemic. Michener, in collaboration with clinical, hospital, long-term care, universities and college partners stood up an education resource in ten days, in anticipation of large-scale pandemic-related redeployments. A year later, this COVIDCareLearning.ca resource hub now has over 14,500 users, and content supporting care providers in hospitals, long-term care, pediatrics, and those supporting vaccination efforts. We aided Ontario Health in building lab capacity through developing a science graduate onboarding program for Ontario and Public Health Ontario Labs. Michener is also a key partner in supporting the rollout of a large project training Resident Support Aides for deployment into long-term care homes. Finally, our Critical Care Nursing program has now been delivered at six GTA hospitals as they build their critical care capacity – a remarkable achievement given the program launched just two years ago with an internal mandate. Needless to say, it has been a busy year. What we’ve learned as a teaching community is that regardless of the circumstance, our continuing education team at Michener/UHN thrive. We relentlessly support and care for students, each other, our wellbeing and resilience, and the systems of care around us. We have learned that the power of collaboration without borders allows us to achieve incredible feats with significant, long-lasting impacts to the health and long-term care communities. The SCE at Michener/UHN has entered a new chapter as we engage our learners and partners with a renewed sense of why we all do what we do, while realizing the true power of Michener’s integration with Canada’s pre-eminent hospital network as we navigate toward a post-pandemic world. I end this note with a heartfelt expression of tremendous gratitude on behalf of our senior leadership and program staff. Thank you all for putting your faith in us at Michener/UHN as you advance your professional development journeys. COURSE FORMATS T
he SCE works with educational designers and subject matter experts to create accessible course content that leverages different learning methods. You can register for a series of certificates and courses offered online, in-person and, in some cases, with flexible timelines. FACILITATED COURSES ONLINE Facilitated courses start at specific times throughout the year and usually run for about 12 weeks, or one semester. Online facilitators help you learn throughout the course from week to week, and include various assessment components to help solidify your learning. This includes many specialty courses, certificate courses and webinars. SELF-STUDY COURSES ONLINE Self-Study courses are open for registration any time throughout the year. Complete a course at your own pace and within one year of registration. This flexible option gives you control over how long you spend learning online, and tutors are available virtually to answer your questions and guide you through the course. At Michener, most self-study options are online. VIRTUAL COURSES ONLINE Virtual workshops allow for synchronous learning where participants can interact with each other and facilitators in real-time. CLASSROOM-BASED COURSES Some courses are offered exclusively in a classroom or require hands-on, simulated practice to ensure you acquire both the knowledge and skills you need to be successful. The SCE runs many workshops, such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and in topics including conflict resolution and cultural humility. HYBRID COURSES Hybrid courses are designed to deliver content online, and have in-person, classroom components to reinforce learning. ur Continuing Education certificate programs span many different areas in health care that will give you an edge in furthering your career.
Our certificate programs are available online and facilitated by instructors with years of experience practicing in their respective fields, bringing you education that is relevant and applicable. These programs offer facilitated online learning that meet the needs of your busy schedule as an adult learner and allow you to build relationships with other professionals across Ontario, Canada and the world. Many of the courses can be taken individually or combined to meet the requirements for completion of a certificate program.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE The Artificial Intelligence (AI) certificate program will introduce students to the discipline of AI and how it is applied in the health care environment. Students will acquire data science and analytic skills, learn how to implement AI solutions and participate in creating an AI solution. The online delivery provides a pathway alternative that concludes with an AI project and/or solution. There are four courses to be completed in this program. CANNABIS EDUCATOR (CANN400) The recent legalization of cannabis in Canada has raised interest from the health care community about cannabis use in the treatment of disease. With this interest, and an increase in the prescription of medical cannabis, comes the need to educate health professionals on how to properly teach patients about the safe use and application of cannabis. This 12-week course will provide health care professions with the in-depth knowledge they need to understand medical cannabis use. FACILITATED SELF-STUDY VIRTUAL HYBRID CLASSROOM
ACUTE AND CRITICAL CARE NURSING The Acute Care and Critical Care Nursing Programs at Michener were developed through a unique collaboration between the SCE and the Practice-Based Education at the University Health Network. The program was developed by seasoned acute care and critical care nurses in concert with a team of education specialists and leaders to deliver a learning product that is modern, relevant, and reflective of current practice needs. These programs are taught using a hybrid and spiraled curriculum, delivering core content about body systems through a series of online modules. For each body system, learners are guided through online knowledge components, which is followed up by a clinical practicum, and finally a classroom-based session where the integration of knowledge and practice is facilitated by the course instructor. This approach helps learners to continue building their knowledge and skills throughout the course, and sets learners up for optimal success in their professional practice. Both Acute Care and Critical Care programs have been developed in accordance with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and University’s Registered Nurse Critical Care Nursing Program Standard as well as Critical Care Services Ontario’s Standards for Critical Care Nursing in Ontario (2018). DIABETES EDUCATION A
ccording to Diabetes Canada, 11 million Canadians are living with diabetes or prediabetes. Given the high prevalence and its impact on the health care system, effective patient education is an important factor in managing this disease. Continuing Education at Michener offers a variety of online courses for those who work with patients, clients or loved ones living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. All courses are current to the 2018 Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines.
DIABETES EDUCATOR CERTIFICATE (DEDI400) New Enhanced Content Delivered online and led by Certified Diabetes Educators, the Diabetes Educator Certificate Program offers flexible and varied learning methods with objectives drawn from the International Diabetes Federation’s International Standards for the Education of Diabetes Health Professionals. The program is designed to provide you with the opportunity to enhance your knowledge about diabetes. In addition, you will explore the most effective means to educate your patients, whether you are new to diabetes education or working towards certification or credits through the Canadian Diabetes Educator Certification Board. This program is eligible for transfer credit in Athabasca University’s Post-LPN Bachelor of Nursing and Post-RN Bachelor of Nursing programs. BRIDGING PROGRAMS FOR INTERNATIONALLY EDUCATED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
T
he bridging programs are designed for experienced internationally educated health professionals (IEHPs) who wish to practice as licensed health care professionals in Canada. Before writing the licensing exam, it is recommended that IEHPs enroll in a bridging program. This will improve their chances of being licensed. Prior to applying for the programs, applicants need to be assessed either by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) or the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) and obtain a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). In each of the programs, students will review theory components and gain valuable simulated hands-on laboratory experience to help prepare them to write either the CSMLS, Sonography Canada or the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) certification exam. These programs are offered in the evenings and on weekends, and some may include a one-week observership at UHN Hospitals.
MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE (BPML800) This bridging program is designed for internationally educated and experienced medical laboratory technologists whose training and work experience have been assessed by the CSMLS and have been issued a PLA Report. In this 16-week hybrid program, students gain simulated laboratory experience, theory review and a one-week observership option at UHN Hospitals. The simulated laboratory courses will assist in obtaining an understanding of Canadian laboratory practices.

ULTRASOUND SCANNING EVALUATION (BPUS800) This bridging program aims to provide an overview of the scanning protocols and procedures as well as the core skills required for Sonography Canada’s Canadian Clinical Skills Assessment (CCSA). Graduates of this course will gain an understanding of scanning techniques, protocols and patient care skills. In this comprehensive four-weekend hands-on scanning program, students will gain simulated sonography scanning experience. MICHENER ENGLISH LANGUAGE ASSESMENT
T
he Michener English Language Assessment (MELA) is a standardized English language proficiency test specific to the health care sector. This test is referenced to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). MELA scores are used by some post-secondary institutions and regulatory bodies as approved and acceptable demonstration of communicative competence to study or practice in English. MELA measures English language communication skills in four areas: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The test takes about three and a half hours. There are several testing sessions offered monthly. Applicants can choose to complete the assessment from the comfort of their homes or in-person at Michener (Toronto). Both sessions are offered in a proctored environment. MELA is open to applications from all over Canada and if requested, MELA can also be offered in-person anywhere in Canada at an approved test site. MELA scores are used for admission to all Michener full-time, part-time and bridging programs, as a diagnostic tool by program consultants, and for licensure by regulators.

he Temerty Advanced Surgical Education and Simulation Centre (Temerty Centre) proudly boasts the future of innovative surgical medicine. Over the past year, construction has been ongoing to transform the space into a unique environment that will become a hub of advanced surgical simulationbased education and training for health care professionals. A state-of-the-art high-fidelity OR simulation lab, 10-bay self-directed skills lab, telesimulation/ telementoring rooms and an innovation hub are features of Phase 1, which is now complete. Our highly anticipated opening is scheduled for summer 2021*. We very much look forward to hosting you at the Centre, whether it be for a tour, educational programming or honing your skills in one of our labs.
THE SELF-DIRECTED SKILLS LAB The self-directed skills lab includes 10 high-fidelity dry lab bays outfitted with the latest simulation technology, learning tools and educational recording equipment along with 24/7 access. Current and future surgical leaders will be able to use this space to develop and hone their surgical skills leveraging a diverse array of task trainers, virtual reality (VR) modules, and robotics. An option is available for practice sessions to be recorded for later assessment and feedback by experienced surgeons and teachers to facilitate continuous learning and development. This space will be available to book if you are a year three or four medical student, a medical resident or a fellow from a participating surgical program. There will also be faculty-led group training sessions for internal and external learners.
HIGH-FIDELITY OR SIMULATION LAB The OR Simulation Lab provides an opportunity for faculty at UHN and externally, surgeon consultants, and our industry partners to create and deliver new high-fidelity surgical programming. These courses may include robotics, and artificial intelligence. They can be specific to individual surgical specialties or be team-based. Our organizations, by default, are becoming more diverse in their makeup. Arguably however, there continues to be a disconnect between the structures we work in and the populations they serve. Discovering Cultural Humility in Health Care Education explores the notion of cultural humility and how it can enhance our teaching and learning practices. By looking at their lived experiences, participants will be encouraged to challenge their personal lenses and current systems, as well as the western philosophies of learning. Centre for Interprofessional Education The Centre for Interprofessional Education (IPE) is a strategic partnership between the University of Toronto and the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network with the University Health Network as the lead hospital. Collaborative Change Leadership™ NOW VIRTUAL Collaborative Change Leadership™ (CCL) is a certificate program offered by the University Health Network (UHN) in collaboration with the University of Toronto Centre for Interprofessional Education (CIPE) and the Michener Institute of Education at UHN. This advanced leadership program is aimed at senior and high potential leaders in health care and health education. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our alumni are reaching out to share that the Collaborative Change Leadership (CCL) Program has enhanced their ability to be the leaders needed for these challenging and uncertain times. As alumni are engaging their teams and communities in compassionate and meaningful ways to co-create and sustain system change, they are achieving rapid, efficient and unprecedented results. CCL is specifically designed for the time in which we find ourselves. The need for emergence, adaptation, co-creation and highly effective implementation rooted in compassion has never been more critical. Grounded in leadership, change and social accountability theories, processes and practices, this program is designed for leaders who are driven to engage communities in a meaningful way to create and sustain system change. Participants will apply their learning to a Capstone Initiative that has been identified as a priority within their organization, system or community. The focus is on, but is not limited to, interprofessional care and education, quality and safety, and patient/family/community-centered care. This program covers a 9-month period with five virtual two-day face-to-face sessions and blends these intensive sessions with coaching from faculty. VITAL (Virtual Interprofessional Teaching and Learning) NEW PROGRAM As educators, clinicians and leaders are struggling to pivot to the ‘new normal’ of virtual teaching and learning across our systems, we are pleased to share an exciting new program called VITAL: Virtual Interprofessional Teaching And Learning. This six-module virtual learning series covers key best practices and core competencies of interprofessional education (IPE) and virtual facilitation. The newest technologies and virtual active learning strategies are co-facilitated and modelled by two Centre for IPE faculty and include; didactic theory bursts, small group breakouts, large group discussions/reflections, virtual stretch breaks, real-time polling, chat boxes and team simulation videos. The unique use of best practice videoconferencing team norms supports participant psychological safety, equity and attention to engagement in a new virtual environment.

Program Customization The School of Continuing Education (SCE) at Michener/UHN is keen to develop and deliver curricula for health professionals and learners where they work locally, nationally and internationally. In addition to running a series of courses that individuals can participate in, we can work with your organization to customize programming to meet your specific local needs. Many kinds of programs can be customized, including individual courses, workshops and certificate programs. Our team can work with you to contextualize these courses for your own learning purposes. These programs can be delivered online or, in some instances, in-person at your organization. Examples of programs that have been customized include Diabetes Educator, Critical Care Nursing, ehpic™ and the Advanced Diploma in Ultrasound.
Program Development and Hosting Services The SCE can support your organization to achieve its own strategic teaching and learning goals by helping your educators plan and deliver professional development activities. Our curriculum and faculty development specialists can work with your teams to identify learning needs and to build pedagogically sound learning activities and programs. In addition to supporting education design, the SCE can also partner with you to deliver existing educational programs through the SCE. Continuing Education and Professional Development Accreditation The Michener Institute of Education at UHN is a Royal College Accredited Provider of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This means that the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has allowed Michener to issue Section 1 and 3 credits under their Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program. We are the first institution that is not a medical school office of CPD, or a national medical specialty society or association, to be granted this responsibility. Programs can be assessed for issuance of MOC credits to ensure you are putting forward the highest quality programs you can for your learners.

his website launched April 1, 2020 with the great support of the Toronto Region hospital, long-term care, and education communities to provide key resources to prepare health care professionals who will be caring for Ontarians impacted by COVID-19. As the site has grown provincially, so too has the diversity of our valued collaborators. Since the start of the pandemic, this platform has grown to support hospitals and long-term care homes across a variety of content areas for numerous professions. The site is organized into 13 content area for professionals working in hospitals, 11 for long-term care, and 4 in paediatrics. The site also hosts a variety of general resources on infection control and team-based care, and most recently, a variety of resources about COVID-19 vaccination.
