Last year marked 60 years since Dr. Diana Schatz founded what was then the Toronto Institute of Medical Technology in the basement of Toronto General Hospital as a response to the professional needs of health care practitioners. Part of Dr. Schatz’s vision was to encourage the practical components of education and to provide students with a more meaningful learning experience. This idea, along with simulation and interprofessional education, became the foundation of Michener’s education structure. Sixty years later, this vision continues to resonate in the classrooms and labs across Michener’s St. Patrick campus and clinical sites. Our 60th anniversary gave us a chance to reflect and build on our past successes, deepen our current contribution to Ontario health care and work with our partners to give our students the best education possible. Dr. Schatz was truly an education leader in her time, and she knew then that ongoing education was key to a successful career. HISTORY OF MICHENER The Michener Institute’s history of innovation goes back to 1958 with a Medical Laboratory Technology pilot program founded by Dr. Diana Michener Schatz at Toronto General Hospital. In 1966, formal classes started at what was then known as the Toronto Institute of Medical Technology with the financial support of the Ontario Ministry of Health. In 1972, the institution moved to its present location at 222 St. Patrick Street in downtown Toronto close to major teaching hospitals. In 1990, the name was changed to The Michener Institute to honour the late Governor General, Roland Michener, and was later renamed The Michener Institute of Applied Health Sciences. In 2016, The Michener Institute integrated with University Health Network, the first partnership of its kind in Canada, and was named The Michener Institute of Education at UHN with a new focus on teaching and learning across five campuses (St. Patrick campus, Toronto General Hospital campus, Toronto Western Hospital campus, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre campus and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute campus). Today, more than 150 health care professionals teach at The Michener Institute and over 300 students graduate from Michener each year.

WELCOME FROM THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE Thank you for your interest in The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. Michener lives in five campuses across the University Health Network (UHN) in downtown Toronto (Toronto General Hospital campus, Toronto Western Hospital campus, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre campus, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute campus and St. Patrick campus). All of Michener’s full-time applied health sciences programs are located at the St. Patrick campus, a dynamic and innovative education facility that combines classrooms, laboratories and simulation suites to promote an integrated experience for students. We are proud to be affiliated with world-renowned heath care leaders and deliver a broad range of full-time, part-time and continuing education programs designed to meet the evolving needs within the health care system. Michener’s curriculum is responsive to the workforce and our health care partners. Our growing community of clinical and academic partners is a strength that we continue to leverage so that our students get the best possible experiences as they prepare for their careers as health care professionals.

REGISTRATION AND RECORDS The Registration and Records team registers students in their classes, processes fee payments, provides confirmation of enrolments and transcripts and help students access the Self-Service Portal, where they can view their schedule and fees.

CAMPUS LIFE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE There are a variety of financial aid sources to assist students. Ontario Student Assistance Program - OSAP OSAP can provide loans and grants to support students in their studies at Michener. Students can complete and submit the OSAP application, including all required documents, online at www.ontario.ca/osap. Apply no later than June 1 in order to receive funding in time for the beginning of the semester. Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries Michener is pleased to award over $90,000 annually in scholarships, awards and bursaries. These funds are non-repayable. Please note: • Scholarships, awards and bursaries are awarded on the basis of academic or clinical achievement each year in the fall semester (financial need is also assessed for most named bursaries and/or awards) • General bursaries are awarded by Michener on the basis of financial need and are available each semester in varying amounts up to $2,000 External Scholarships and Awards Michener provides information online about related external scholarships and bursaries.
Education and Training Benefit - Veterans This new federal benefit will provide veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces with six years of service for funding up to $40,000, and veterans with at least 12 years of service for up to $80,000, to cover tuition, course materials and some incidentals and living expenses. Details can be found at veterans.gc.ca. Student Professional Development The Michener Institute of Education at UHN encourages and supports students’ personal and professional growth opportunities beyond the classroom to enrich their experience, including: • Presenting at or participating in a conference or professional gathering related to their area of study or professional development
OUR STUDENTS Michener is proud of its diverse student population with representation from many cultures and countries. Over 61% of Michener students are in the 20-24 age range* when beginning their studies (see Figure 1). Michener graduates report* a 97% satisfaction rate as compared to the provincial average of 79%. A grant limit of up to $2,000 per student is subject to annual review and approval.

ORIENTATION The mandatory orientation at Michener sets incoming first-year students on the right course. Providing a balance of both academic and social integration, Orientation helps support student success both inside and outside of the classroom. Students will meet others from all programs of study and get to know Michener staff, faculty and program Chairs while learning about available student services.
STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council initiates and directs student activities outside the classroom, acts as a liaison with Michener staff and represents the student body on many Michener committees. The Council consists of student representatives elected from each of the programs, and members attend weekly meetings to conduct business.
ACCESSIBILITY & ACCOMMODATIONS SERVICES Michener strives to ensure the success of students with a documented disability, and will work with the Michener Health Services team and medical practitioners to ensure accommodations. For more information, visit michener.ca/ studentsuccess.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, EVENTS AND CLUBS Michener students have opportunities to join clubs, committees and student program groups. Students can find more information through Student Council and the Student Success Network.
FITNESS, ATHLETICS AND RECREATION Michener’s fitness, athletics and recreation facilities are available for all students to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. The 24-hour access facilities include a squash court, weight room, cardio area, table tennis and boxing bags. There is a gymnasium for intramurals and pick-up sports available daily from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm. Students also have access to gym lockers, a sauna and showers in the change rooms.
PEER TUTORING Peer Tutoring is available to current students through the Student Success Network. Students may self-refer or may be recommended by faculty throughout the academic year.
COACHING AND COUNSELLING Michener’s Coaching and Counselling services offer confidential and professional support for a variety of life’s stresses, ranging from anxiety and depression, homesickness and concerns about relationships or family challenges.
Academic coaching provides career workshops, as well as support for students to improve their study and exam strategies, communication and stress management skills. STUDENT RESIDENCE The Michener Institute is proud to offer an affordable student residence on campus. Students choose residence for a number of reasons including safety, convenience, location and the experience of having a network of classmates and friends to connect with. Each room in the Schatz Hall residence is equipped with the following: • Single bed with storage drawers, desk with a large work space, dresser drawers, bookshelf, office chair, lounge chair with study/dining table and a floor lamp • Private washroom with shower/tub • TV cable/high-speed Internet connection (to be arranged and paid for by student), telephone with voice mail and unlimited local calls and Wi-Fi • Individual heating and air conditioning units, smoke detector Michener Student Residence Rates (2018/2019 rates subject to change): • $810 per month (no linen service) • $860 per month with linen service

WHAT MAKES MICHENER UNIQUE As the only publicly funded school in Canada dedicated solely to training applied health professionals, and as part of UHN, Michener provides a unique and integrated learning experience.
MULTIPLE MINI INTERVIEW (MMI) Michener has a unique approach to admissions where applicants for most programs are invited to a mandatory Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) where important characteristics, such as problemsolving, teamwork, empathy and communication, are rated. The intent is to admit students who can be an integral and successful member of an interprofessional health care team. The MMI score is worth 50% of the overall admissions score.
INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION The World Health Organization recognizes how important it is for health professions to learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes. Michener students from all programs are given the opportunity to collaborate with peers from other health care disciplines and enrich their team-based practice.
SIMULATION-BASED EDUCATION Each of Michener’s programs feature simulation as a core learning experience. Simulation is a hands-on way to transfer knowledge into practice in a safe but highly realistic environment prior to clinical placements. Students discover how to communicate effectively with patients and in teams, and practice the technical and non-technical skills that are central to the health professions in a way that promotes critical thinking and learning from mistakes. Trial and error in simulation is the key to safe and effective practice in the real world.
COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION SKILLS Michener is preparing the health force of the future by placing a strong emphasis on developing communication and collaboration skills, both for lab-based and patient-facing programs. In Michener’s Simulated Participant Program, specially trained actors portray anything from an angry patient who needs to be de-escalated, to an underperforming co-worker who needs coaching and compassion. Whatever the communication scenario, simulation provides the environment for students to demonstrate person-centred practice.

DEDICATED FACULTY / SMALL CLASSES Michener faculty are regulated health care professionals and educators in their respective fields and are committed to the success of their students. Small class sizes mean more hands-on learning, which gives students the opportunity for daily interaction with faculty.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT MODULES All students complete Quality Improvement modules offered in collaboration with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) as part of their program. Topics covered include: • Fundamentals of improvement • Models for improvement • How quality improvement works in real health care settings • The human side of quality improvement • Tools for improvement
CLINICAL PLACEMENTS The dedicated staff in the Office of Clinical Education work with students to place them at one or more of our partner sites. Clinical partner sites are subject to change, therefore, specific regions may not be available at the time of placement.

CLINICAL EDUCATION Clinical Education is a fundamental component of all Michener full-time and part-time programs. Our partners include teaching and community hospitals, private laboratories, clinics and community health centres across Canada. Michener students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in hands-on work environments. Using the latest diagnostic and patient-care equipment and technology, students practice under the supervision of clinical coordinators and educators.
the opportunity to experience the effects of aging in everyday life. The Working with Seniors curriculum gives students the skills, knowledge and confidence to work effectively with older adults.
WORKING WITH SENIORS Working with Seniors is an intensive weeklong training that launches in the summer semester, combining flexible online learning modules with simulated experiences. The training includes interactions with seniors, participating in scenarios and wearing the Sakamoto Aging Simulation Suit (a frail aging simulation suit). The suit gives students
CURRICULUM DESIGN AND ASSESSMENT Michener’s curriculum is reviewed and updated regularly to meet constantly evolving health care needs, rapid technological change and professional competency profiles. Students are assessed in multiple ways, such as exams, practical assessments and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
CARING SAFELY UHN’s commitment to safety is integrated into Michener’s culture through Caring Safely education and training that focuses on eliminating preventable harm to patients and ensuring safety in the workplace.

MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Medical Laboratory Science program is composed of three parts: • Four didactic semesters, which include theory and practical laboratory sessions (Years 1 and 2) • One 12-week simulated clinical semester on campus in which the students practice as Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) in a simulated clinical environment • One 20-week semester of clinical education at an affiliated site From day one, students are immersed in a collaborative, handson environment simulating a clinical lab setting. WHERE CAN I WORK? Respiratory Therapy is a regulated health profession. To work as a Respiratory Therapist in Ontario, graduates must be registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO). The Michener Respiratory Therapy program is approved by the CRTO through the Council on Accreditation for Respiratory Therapy Education accreditation program and graduates are eligible to write the national examinations. ABOUT THE PROFESSION Perfusionists work under the direct clinical responsibility of cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists as part of the multidisciplinary operating room (OR) team. Their primary role is to maintain a patient’s respiration, circulation and physiological state, using state-of-the-art equipment like the heart-lung machine during surgery. They are also trained to administer blood products and drugs as part of their scope of practice. Working in the cardiac operating room is physically demanding and shifts are typically 10-12 hours at a time.
WHERE CAN I WORK? Cardiovascular Perfusionists work in hospitals that have cardiac surgery programs. The majority of their time is spent in the cardiac operating room, but they also work in other critical care areas such as the ICU and Cath Lab. Other unique career opportunities can be found in transplant programs, education, commercial sales and research.

CHIROPODY ABOUT THE PROGRAM Michener offers the only Chiropody program in Canada. There is an on-site Chiropody clinic, which provides students with the opportunity to treat patients under the supervision of licensed Chiropodists from the faculty. To practice as a licensed Chiropodist in Ontario, individuals must be registered with the College of Chiropodist of Ontario. Graduates from this program are eligible to write the College’s annual provincial registration exam.

ABOUT THE PROFESSION A Chiropodist is a primary care professional who specializes in the assessment, management and prevention of dysfunctions, disorders and diseases of the foot. Chiropodists are an integral part of the multidisciplinary health care team, who are skilled in the management of acute and chronic conditions affecting the foot. These conditions can include routine diabetic foot care, sports and traumatic injuries, biomechanical assessments and orthotic therapy, pediatric foot conditions and ulcer care. A referral is not required to consult a chiropodist, however chiropodists often work closely with other medical professionals as part of the health care team.

ABOUT THE PROFESSION Diagnostic medical sonography (ultrasound) is an important medical diagnostic imaging technology that uses highfrequency sound waves to display real time images of the soft tissue structures in the human body such as the abdomen, pelvis, breast, thyroid, musculature and vascular structures. It plays a large role in assessing fetal development, well-being and fetal anatomy and can also be utilized to assess the viability of different types of organ transplants by assessing vascular flow. Sonographers are highly skilled health care professionals who use ultrasound technology to assess, image and report on anatomical systems in order to differentiate between normal and pathologic findings and provide compassionate patient centred care.

ABOUT THE PROFESSION Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Technologists apply superior technical skills in a compassionate, patient-focused model of care. They use non-invasive procedures targeted at eliminating the pain, trauma and risk associated with invasive surgery that patients would otherwise undergo, to determine the location and size of tumours or to determine the extent of numerous diseases in almost all of the human organ systems. Molecular Imaging uses specialized instrumentation alone or in combination with targeted imaging agents to visualize biochemical events at the cellular and molecular level, in order to help identify regions of pathology and potential mechanisms of disease.
WHERE CAN I WORK? Graduates are employed in a variety of clinical environments including community or teaching hospitals, private clinics, research institutes, public health institutions, regulatory bodies, commercial radio pharmacies, education, sales and applications. ABOUT THE PROGRAM The joint University of Toronto / Michener Radiation Therapy Program allows students to participate in all aspects of the profession, including treatment planning, treatment delivery, CT simulation, patient care, interprofessional collaboration and health care ethics. As part of the curriculum, students will have the opportunity to practice in a simulated clinical environment in treatment delivery, patient communication and treatment planning before proceeding to their final clinical placement. Graduates are eligible to write the national certification examinations conducted by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). Certification qualifies graduates to work across Canada and allows them to apply for registration as a radiation therapist with the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO). The program is accredited by EQual (a subsidiary of Accreditation Canada). WHAT WILL I STUDY? • How to work as part of an interprofessional team within the hospital setting, as imaging procedures are not only requested in the medical imaging department but also in patient rooms, emergency and the operating room • How to accurately position patients to produce quality diagnostic images • Use cutting-edge medical imaging technology in X-ray, CT and BMD imaging to perform complex anatomical scans to produce and enhance radiographic images
ABOUT THE PROFESSION Radiological Technologists produce medical images of internal organs and structures, commonly called x-rays, in a compassionate, patient-focused model of care. Technologists operate a variety of medical imaging equipment in areas such as general radiography, computed tomography, fluoroscopy, mammography and bone mineral densitometry. In doing so, they need to provide optimal care for the patient, use minimal radiation and employ appropriate radiation protection measures. The field of radiological technology also includes therapeutic procedures, often referred to as interventional radiology. Interventional radiology is used in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of injury and disease.
WHERE CAN I WORK? Graduates are employed in a variety of areas including hospitals and private clinics, government agencies, sales, new product development and education. ABOUT THE PROGRAM Michener’s Anesthesia Assistant program consists of three semesters. The cohort starts in September with a comprehensive online course over the first 13 weeks. During Week 14, the students attend an on-site five-day residency at The Michener Institute that includes sessions and evaluations. In the second term, the program consists of online collaborative learning. Students are on site one day per week for 14 weeks, plus a 10 day residency that includes sessions and evaluations in the classroom and Simulation Centre. The clinical semester is offered following successful completion of semesters one and two at their designated base site, plus one to two weeks at another site. This program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Respiratory Therapy Education (CoARTE).
ABOUT THE PROFESSION Anesthesia Assistants (AA) work in operating rooms as midlevel anesthesia providers and are part of Anesthesia Care Teams (ACT) in many facilities across Canada. The AA works under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist and under the authority of medical directives. Significant growth in the profession is anticipated due to the aging population and associated rise in surgical procedures, including those outside of the operating room, such as interventional radiography and catheterization labs.
WHERE CAN I WORK? Most Anesthesia Assistants work in the operating rooms of a hospital, but they can also be found in post-operative care areas, pain clinics and special procedure rooms.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) program is a parttime program designed with the working medical radiation sciences professional in mind. This program consists of both didactic and clinical components spread across five semesters. The didactic courses are offered online. The clinical practicum consists of a mandatory five-day readiness for clinical course on-site at Michener to ensure that students are thoroughly prepared to commence their full-time clinical practicum. Graduates are eligible to write the national certification examinations conducted by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). Certification qualifies graduates to work across Canada and allows them to apply for registration as an MRI Technologist with the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO). WHAT WILL I STUDY? • Patient Care and Safety in the MRI environment • Preparing and positioning patients for their MRI examinations • Using sophisticated MRI scanners to perform complex cross-sectional imaging procedures • Applying knowledge of MRI physics and principles, cross sectional anatomy and pathology to review and analyze MRI images • Hybrid imaging and basic advanced techniques
ABOUT THE PROFESSION MRI is an imaging modality that creates images of the body using radiofrequency waves in conjunction with extremely powerful magnets. This non-invasive technique relies on the magnetic properties of atoms (rather than radiation), and provides valuable diagnostic information to aid in patient management. In recent years, MRI has undergone remarkable growth and is now widely used. MRI technologists use their communication, patient-care and collaborative skills to interact with patients and other members of the health care team. They are responsible for the safety of patients and other staff members in the Magnetic Resonance environment. Using their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology along with the principles of MRI physics, MRI technologists operate MRI scanners to create images of a patient’s body tissues, which physicians then use as an aid to diagnose patients. The skill of the MRI technologist is extremely important in obtaining high-quality diagnostic images. MRI technologists work under the supervision of physicians and other medical personnel.
WHERE CAN I WORK? MRI Technologists find rewarding careers in clinical environments such as hospitals, mobile MR units and diagnostic imaging centres. Other career opportunities can be found in the areas of education, sales, applications and research.

MEDICAL LABORATORY RADIOLOGICAL SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY (X-RAY) This program has been designed to help prepare internationally educated Medical Laboratory Technologists for the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) national licensing examination in Canada. In this intensive and comprehensive 16-week course, participants will gain valuable simulated laboratory experience, intensive theory review and thorough preparation for the CSMLS certification exam. The simulated laboratory courses help students obtain an understanding of Canadian laboratory science practices. This program will also fulfill all refresher course requirements from a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA).

This program has been specifically designed to help prepare internationally educated Medical Radiological (X-ray) Technologists for the national certification examination. This course integrates practical and didactic learning and consists of 11 modules, 3 exams, a review workshop and a 5-day hospital observership.
