Joint letter from the Chair and Interim President & CEO This past year at Michener was one of continued success in our mission to deliver exceptional education experiences for future and current applied health sciences professionals. It was also a year of reflection and renewal as we set our sights on strengthening our unique place within Ontario’s health system and the qualities that we define as The Michener Advantage. We celebrated the conclusion of a multi-year transformational journey that defined our course during a period of significant health system transformation in the province. Core strategies focused on people, quality, knowledge and resource innovation, which allowed us to concentrate our efforts and expertise, culminating in a number of achievements last year that we intend to build upon going forward. We expanded and strengthened partnerships that now bring some of the latest technologies to bear in our education and simulation environments. These partnerships ensure that our students have access to the same modern equipment found in today’s academic health sciences centres. Our growing partnership with Elekta, for example, has positioned our radiation therapy training facilities as one of the most advanced of its kind in Canada. Given the realities of a rapidly aging population, training the next generation of applied health sciences professionals in the unique challenges of caring for older patients is a must. This past year, we began developing a new curriculum aimed at supporting learners’ skills and understanding of the unique needs of seniors. This new curriculum, set to debut in summer 2014, also introduces new modules in continuous quality improvement, equipping students with the fundamentals to thrive within today’s quality-focused healthcare organizations. We celebrated the achievement of being named a Greater Toronto Area top employer for the seventh consecutive year. This accomplishment is most meaningful because, above everything else, it reminds us how important our people – faculty, staff and students – are to our current and future successes.

Building momentum Change in health care is a catalyst for new thinking and ideas. It is an enabler of innovation; it stimulates quality. As an institution devoted to meeting the needs of our health system, change is a philosophy that we have, and must continue to, embrace and drive.

The conclusion of our transformational journey represented a timely opportunity for us to step back and consider the direction we need to take as an organization to ensure that we remain a partner in positive health system transformation, quality and sustainability. Last year we initiated a comprehensive strategic review to help us define opportunities that build on our strengths and yet challenge us to change and evolve to better match the shifting demands for applied health sciences education. Through this exercise, we sought the input of our academic and clinical partners, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, faculty and staff. These perspectives helped us develop a blueprint for Michener that we feel will help us strengthen our role in today’s – and tomorrow’s – health system.

Responsive education is one of the enablers of our provincial health action plan. As we anticipate the recruitment of a new CEO later this year and the development of a new strategic plan, we believe we are on the cusp of an important new era at Michener. Through emboldened partnerships and a renewed commitment to innovation in everything we do, we are poised for an exciting and impactful future. Respectfully submitted,

Cliff Nordal Sylvia Schippke Chair, Board of Directors Interim President & CEO and VP, Academic

Education solutions for Ontario’s evolving health system Driven by our commitment to deliver quality academic programs that align with labour market opportunities and changes to clinical practice, we remain able to respond quickly and creatively to emerging health education needs.

11

Senior-centric curriculum prepares students today for the patients of tomorrow The number of seniors in Ontario is set to double in the next 20 years. In his Living Longer, Living Well report, Dr. Samir Sinha, the provincial lead for Ontario’s Senior Care Strategy, emphasized that in order to ensure quality and sustainability in healthcare, our system needs to be better prepared to serve the unique needs of this population. Responding to this call, Michener began developing curricular enhancements that would enable us to deliver training designed specifically to prepare learners in how to care for older patients.

Through a unique partnership with one of the world’s leading geriatric medicine and research centres, Michener is set to launch its first Working With Seniors module with its summer 2014 curriculum. This seven-part module will better prepare the next generation of health professionals to care for tomorrow’s patients. It will also equip them with the confidence they need to succeed in an increasingly senior-centric healthcare landscape, from hospitals that are becoming more ‘senior-friendly,’ and the community where seniors represent the largest proportion of consumers of home care services.

Giving students an advantage in quality improvement The Excellent Care for All Act makes quality improvement a core business of healthcare in the province. The development of annual quality improvement plans, for example, is a legislative requirement for all publicly-funded healthcare organizations. Considering that most of today’s continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts are driven by front-line staff, Michener worked this past year to become one of a select few academic centres to incorporate the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open

School Quality Improvement Practicum into our academic curriculum. Starting this summer, we will now offer six units in partnership with IHI and the University of Toronto. This curriculum enhancement will provide students with the fundamental knowledge of quality improvement, safety, system design and leadership that they can apply as a core competency in their clinical roles.

Simulated experience Simulation education at Michener will be taken to a whole new level as students discover firsthand what it’s like to experience frailty in aging, while wearing the Sakamoto Aging Simulation Suit in the summer semester. The suit significantly restricts a student’s movement and reduces eyesight and hearing ability.

13

Increasing opportunities for students to define their course through continuing education Our extensive experience in education design, simulation and hybrid delivery models creates unique opportunities to reach and train even more healthcare professionals working in hospitals, long-term care, clinic and community settings than ever before. Today, over 60 per cent of our curriculum is now offered online.

Since 2005, our Continuing Education program has more than doubled in size. This past year alone, we had a record year in the number of course registrations and we believe we are poised for further growth in meeting the continuing education needs of both students and healthcare professionals in Ontario and beyond.

Matching academic programming with emerging needs We continued to make enhancements to our curriculum in response to the latest needs in health human resources and advances in technology. These ongoing efforts allow us to provide relevant and meaningful academic experiences and match program offerings with current and future labour market opportunities. For example, last year we initiated a review of our Nuclear Medicine Program together with our academic partner, University of Toronto. The goal

of the review was to develop a curriculum that continues to reflect contemporary practice needs and innovative program design. With the review now nearing completion, we are excited to be introducing a new curriculum to students starting this fall. The recent addition of a new cyclotron at Toronto General Hospital UHN, one of our key clinical partners, in downtown Toronto will likely only add to the growing interest in this field, which Michener is well positioned to support.

We offer a wide selection of continuing education courses and certificate programs to enhance professional qualifications. Discover the array of available courses at michener.ca/ce

A unique partnership reinforces the uniqueness of our joint radiation therapy program We are fortunate to begin the winter semester with the addition of Clarity® in our linear accelerator labs, thanks to our ongoing partnership with Elekta, one of the world’s leading radiation therapy systems developers. This innovative technology provides ultrasound guided precision to radiation therapy planning and treatment, matching the modern technology found in today’s hospitals and cancer care centres.

Clarity® is the latest in a number of enhancements made to our diagnostic imaging and therapeutics environments last year. From the installation of our new SPECT/CT and new additions to our x-ray and ultrasound laboratories, our students are able to gain competence with a wide range of imaging, diagnostic and therapeutic technologies before entering their clinical rotations. We are immensely grateful to all of our partners for their generosity and commitment to Michener students.

Leveraging Michener’s unique facilities in the heart of Toronto’s biodiscovery district We continued to leverage our state-of-the-art simulation and observation spaces and meeting environments to support our health system and academic partners.

Quality as both a driver and an outcome One of Michener’s core operational strategies is focused on quality – building organizational capacity for innovation, nurturing a culture of continuous improvement and ensuring that our programs continue to meet national standards of excellence.

23

Academic quality through accreditation An important part of our commitment to continuous quality improvement, Michener’s academic programs regularly participate in the national accreditation programs of the Canadian Medical Association and the Council on Accreditation for Respiratory Therapy Education. We are pleased to report that our Genetics Technology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy (U of T and Laurentian), Radiation Technology and Respiratory Therapy Programs all earned continued accreditation this past year, with additional programs slated for accreditation reviews in the coming year.

Understanding how we measure up Last year, we initiated an effort that will see us begin to report and share key performance indicators with those of our counterparts in the post-secondary education sector. Through our participation in this program, we believe Michener will be able to better understand emerging opportunities to develop innovative and relevant academic programs and partnerships while maintaining our unique benefit to the health system.

Technology infrastructure advances quality This past year, Michener initiated a project to perform a number of significant technology upgrades. The introduction of VOIP phone system technology, a refresh of nearly 200 computers, along with our new partnership with GTAnet and Orion research networks means that our faculty, staff and students have access to a state-of-the-art, integrated and secure information management infrastructure. We also introduced new audiovisual monitoring and recording software used in our Centre for the Advancement of Simulation and Education (CASE).

Called LearningSpace, this new system allows faculty to monitor and record simulation scenarios in real-time while easily adding comments and annotations for use during debriefs. Students are able to review scenarios from any computer at Michener and are able to add comments to enhance their reflective practice. This is an important benefit not just to Michener students, but to all of our other partners who wish to take advantage of our state-of-the-art CASE environments.

Big ideas Our Centre for Learning and Innovation (CLI) is an important part of Michener’s quality agenda. Building on the framework for continuous quality improvement it introduced to our academic programs, CLI promotes a culture of intellectual inquiry and knowledge building. Last year, it also introduced a new way to foster new thinking and encourage innovation within and beyond the Michener community.

lecture series

The Big Ideas lecture series was created to offer a new, fun and engaging way to nurture knowledge management and continuous quality culture among students, faculty and staff. Four Big Ideas lectures have already been hosted since its launch, focusing on such topics as advances in DNA sequencing, new applications for radiation therapy education and the use of technology in how we teach and learn.

Continued recognition as a top employer For the seventh consecutive year, Michener was named one of the Greater Toronto Area’s top employers by Media Corp. We are proud of this achievement as it recognizes our commitment to foster a culture that respects work-life balance and promote the ongoing professional development of our academic, support and administrative staff.

The Michener community – it’s all about people Dr. Diana Schatz founded Michener because she saw an unmet need to provide specialized training for applied health sciences professionals. She inspired others around her to support the idea for a school in downtown Toronto and from that first day in 1958, Michener’s legacy was rooted in people and community. Fifty-five years later, the value of community is stronger than ever. From our faculty and staff, to our students and alumni, to our donors and partners, the Michener community remains the foundation of our past and future successes.
