The 2013 National Health Care Team Challenge (HCTC) was held on June 14 in Vancouver, BC. This interprofessional event promotes teamwork and collaboration amongst students across Canada. The challenge is designed to provide students with the opportunity to “walk the talk” in a real-life clinical setting, while facilitating the development of student leaders in interprofessional education. Students gain exposure to a variety of core values and competencies, including communication and reflection skills, while developing a mutual respect, openness to trust, and willingness to collaborate with others.
Each student team is provided with the same case to work on, with the goal of developing a collaborative interprofessional patient/client-centred plan of management. On the day of the event, student teams present their plans to an audience of clinicians, academics, community members, and other students, and are judged on both the quality of the management plan and level of team collaboration. “On June 14, 2013 TMIAHSA was very lucky to participate in the National Health Care Team Challenge for the third year! Our team comprised six presenters, one coach, and one faculty mentor, Masood Hassan, Radiological Technology. We worked together as an interprofessional team towards creating a presentation that would explain our patient case in a way that would help the audience relate to the patient. It was a great learning experience for all of us! We got to learn about patient partnership, aboriginal culture, and much more just by watching other teams present and listening to the different speakers at the conference.” - Sharon Bhella (Respiratory Therapy)

“Before we started our trip to the coastal city of Vancouver, we knew each other casually from our meetings, and even then, only in the professional sense. Over the course of the trip, however, catching flights together, exploring Vancouver’s restaurants, and working late into the night on our presentation, we learned more about each other outside of our interprofessional roles. And once we did, our teamwork increased exponentially, which leads me to reflect that effective interprofessional collaboration is perhaps not achieved solely by being aware of the roles other health care professions play, but also by getting to know the people in those roles.” - Joel Van Steenbergen (Radiation Therapy)
“As a future health care professional, this Team Challenge was not only an experience to remember, but a lesson to be learned. To be honest, after the challenge, I was almost brought to tears because I was so impressed with not only my team but with myself. We progressed from working for weeks with strangers, putting our thoughts and efforts together to design an intricate plan for our patient, to making efficient and beneficial decisions with friends. The hierarchal issue with health care has brought attention to many people, enough to initiate and emphasize interprofessional education. At the challenge all participants had name tags including their first and last name as well as where they are from. I felt like with the absence of specific professions it alleviated any tension which could have been brought up. All the schools cheered for each other, gave each other advice, and most importantly, supported each other’s thoughts.” - Nazig Gabriel (Radiological Technology) “Having to work with students from other disciplines in Michener broadened my knowledge of different professions and their scopes of practice. Furthermore, not only did we work well together considering the fact that we only just met, but we also had the chance to enjoy the overall experience of travelling together and spending quality time with each other. “One of the interesting things I learned was the difference between patient-centred care and patient partnership; the shift takes place from health care professionals working together to help patients, to patients being involved in planning their treatment plan with the professionals. I also thought the Health Care Team Challenge was a great way to experience interprofessional collaboration first hand. The team shared knowledge about their respective professions for the challenge and worked together seamlessly!” - Siu Chu (Ultrasound)
“At the conference, I attended a workshop entitled ‘Changing the Way Interprofessional Teams Talk.’ To begin, the presenters separated the audience into interprofessional teams. My team consisted of a radiation therapy student (me), an ultrasound student, a social worker, and a doctor. Then, we were presented with a real-life scenario that depicted poor interprofessional communication (IPC). As a team, we discussed how IPC could have been improved, drawing from our personal experiences and applying models that promoted IPC. With this fun and interactive activity, we identified
circumstances of poor interprofessional collaboration and used problemsolving to learn about how to apply IPC effectively. As for the competition, I had a memorable experience working with everyone in our TMIAHSA team. Our group dynamic, creativity, and ability to work cohesively under pressure demonstrated our ability to collaborate interprofessionally. My favourite team moment was seeing all of us in our matching t-shirts, proudly displaying our enthusiasm and solidarity as a team.” - Kim Chung (Radiation Therapy)

Another Exciting Year Draws to a Close By Joel Van Steenburgen, Student Council President, 2012-2013 As I write this, the weather is getting steadily warmer, and Michener students are beginning their summer jobs or their spring semesters, and I find myself reflecting on the importance of the Michener Student Council. The Student Council initiates and directs student activities, acts as liaison with Michener staff, and represents the student body on many influential Michener committees. The council consists of student representatives elected from each program, and members attend weekly meetings to conduct business. Student Council is well-known for its traditions, including the Annual Dinner Cruise, Halloween Party, and St. Patrick’s Day Party. Through the work of members of Student Council, we not only maintained and improved upon our regular events, we also revived some old traditions and implemented new activities! For this year’s Annual Dinner Cruise, we partnered with the Alumni
Association and were able to reserve one of the biggest vessels the Toronto Harbour had to offer. As the sun set on that cool September evening, students dined together on board. The night ended with dancing on deck, under the light of the CN Tower. At the beginning of winter semester, Student Council brought in Frost Fest, a week of welcome-back activities to warm students into the new semester. We gave out hot chocolate and organized ice-skating trips and a charity pancake breakfast. We ended the week with a roaring fireplace in Hart House, and Student Council worked with the Medical Radiation Sciences Student Society to put on a Semi-Formal. We saw an outpouring of skills at our annual Talent Show in Schatz Hall. Students performed stand-up comedy, acoustic Britney Spears songs, breakdancing, renditions from the movie Pitch Perfect, and more!
My year as Student Council president would never have been possible without an excellent team. Jessica Goldie, Vice President, Brix Marzan, Treasurer, and Katherine Tran, Secretary, and I met frequently to discuss direction and potential of Student Council. I extend my grateful thanks to the Student Council Executive Team for helping make this year a grand success! Soon, the 2013-2014 team will take over. I am pleased to announce that Elizabeth Pickles, Medical Laboratory Sciences 2015 will take over as President. She’ll be supported by Kaitlynn Roote, Radiation Therapy 2015 as Vice President. Joining them is Jeff Cheung as Treasurer and Swischana Thiyagarajah as Secretary, both hailing from Medical Laboratory Science 2015. Look for them next year!

Spring Fling Launched in 2013! By LIndsey Hocanin, Former Recruitment Coordinator
On March 20, Michener’s recruitment team hosted Spring Fling, an intimate evening of program sessions, a resource fair, and residence tours. Approximately 150 prospective students toured program floors and spoke to faculty and current students. This invitation-only event allowed applicants to visit labs and classrooms, getting a first-hand look at their possible future learning facilities. Faculty gave presentations and toured applicants through their prospective programs. Current students were on hand to answer questions and give interactive demonstrations. Prospective students also had the chance to speak with representatives from Student Success Network, Clinical Education, Continuing Education, and Financial Aid.
An event like this could not happen without the support of the Michener community, in particular the 120 faculty, students, and staff members who
volunteered for Spring Fling! Thank you again to those who helped make Spring Fling a success!

Building Success by Providing Opportunities to Learn and Grow By Christina Yurchuk, Student Success Network Every March, the Student Success Network offers a series of Job Search Career Rounds designed to help students hone their job search skills. Topics this year included Writing Targeted Health Care Resumes and Cover Letters, Preparing for the Job Interview, and the newly created Networking and Social Media for Job Search. This workshop emphasized the importance of both traditional and social media networking in finding a job and building professional relationships. The rounds are geared to students who often underestimate the value of their earlier experiences in volunteer work, service sector employment, or other seemingly unrelated fields. For example, students learned how to “transfer” and articulate experience as a barista into a relevant and pertinent health care context. One third-year Medical Laboratory Science student wrote: “The SSN Rounds are different from other workshops because they offer specific advice from insiders and provide invaluable insight into the hiring processes of this field.” For the past two years, through the combined efforts of both Christina Yurchuk from SSN and Lissa Manganaro from Alumni Relations, alumni guest speakers have provided students with

“insider information” on interview skills and networking. For the round on preparing for job interviews, our guest speakers were Christina Sperling, Respiratory Therapy 2001, Clinical Manager, Respiratory Therapy, SickKids Hospital; Yo’av Kaplun, Recruiter, University Health Network; Colleen Taylor, Radiological Technology 1993, Vice President of True North Imaging; and Cheryl Ramsay, Director of Human Resources, Michener. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and listen to guests share their frank and honest advice. During our final round, “Networking and Social Media for Job Search,” Christina Sperling talked about the significance of connecting with people to achieve success. Building on that idea, Christina Yurchuk introduced the new role of social networking for both employers and job seekers as one of the most important changes in the job search process in the last decade. The low cost, user-friendly efficiency and reach of social media is definitely the way of the future for health care human resources development, and an important tool for career management Krista Urchenko (Medical Laboratory Science 2014) has been active on social media outlets such as Twitter, LinkedIn,
and Facebook for five years. She runs the blog www.medlabmaven.com, and some of her posts have been published in the Canadian Journal of Medical Laboratory Sciences. Krista talked about the way social media has helped her gain important contacts in her field. She has consulted informally and formally with private and public organizations in developing their own online social media presence. Krista’s modest and easy-going approach showed students that they can also create a similar online presence to help develop their careers. According to one 2nd-year student, “Krista’s tips were awfully helpful in helping me handle my own social media and blogs.” The job search process has remained remarkably stable the past two decades, but technological changes are having an impact on the hiring process, communications, and networking. In addition to a strong targeted resume and cover letter, social and traditional networking will help students land their first jobs and support ongoing career growth. In the words of another 2ndyear student, “The SSN Career Rounds are a great resource and starting point for students entering a career in health care.”

Building Knowledge, Awareness and Relationships Compiled by Lissa Manganaro, Editor, Michener News The Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists held their 49th annual educational conference and trade show in Niagara Falls from May 29th to June 1st, 2013. More than 600 delegates and 120 students attended the educational program, chaired by Susan Dunington, Michener faculty. Two students represented Michener at the conference: Dhushita Pathmanathan, class of 2014, presented her research “Is asthma associated with increased risk for fractures among children?” and Paul Markowski, class of 2013, presented his topic “ICU from the eyes of a Newbie.” Both students received tremendous praise for their contributions to the profession. On Saturday, June 1, 2013, 50 Michener Respiratory Therapy Alumni gathered for an Alumni Associationhosted event. Although early in the morning, graduates were brought to life by fresh coffee and a hot breakfast served up by the Sheraton on the Falls. Christine Nielsen (Medical Laboratory
Science 1997), Chair, Alumni Association Board of Directors, and Nicole Coutu (Respiratory Therapy 2013) board member addressed the guests. Christine reminded alumni that the association is here for them and Nicole emphasized the importance of alumni giving back to support current students, something she was fortunate to experience during her educational journey at Michener. Winners of the Leaders of Tomorrow Grant attended LABCON2013, the conference of the Canadian Society of Laboratory Science (CSMLS) in Victoria, BC, May 10-13, 2013. This grant is offered by the CSMLS Board to med lab students and graduates specifically to fund conference attendance. Congratulations Angela Anthony (Medical Laboratory Science 2012) and Krista Uchenko (Medical Laboratory Science 2014). Catherine Ladhani, Chair, Radiation Therapy Michener was recently appointed to the Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences (OAMRS) for a two-year term
that officially commenced on July 1, 2013. The mandate of the OAMRS is the welfare of its members from five disciplines - Radiological Technology, Radiation Therapy, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasonography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Linda Sarju (Nuclear Medicine 2012) won the OAMRS 2013 Anne Topple Student Academic Achievement Award for scoring the highest mark in the province of Ontario on the CAMRT Nuclear Medicine National Certification Examination in 2012. This award is named after Anne Topple, retired Nuclear Medicine faculty, Michener. Linda also received the Award of Excellence for having the highest mark in Canada in the 2012 CAMRT Nuclear Medicine National Certification Examinations. Benjamin and Linda received their awards at the 2013 OAMRS Annual General Conference held in Niagara-onthe-Lake on Friday April 26th, 2013. Leann Ban (Radiation Therapy 2013) was the winner of the L.J. Nadir Sheriff was nominated by Winnie Ho and the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) team for the creation of a computer script to aid in the export of information from PowerCampus to the LRC system. This allowed for the successful creation of 300 library accounts for our students. Jennifer Kennedy was nominated by Cheryl Ramsay and Robin Darling for Daniela Trapani her administrative and Jennifer support of the HR Kennedy department during this academic year’s busy start. Getting to Know You By Shannan Bernst, Administrative Assistant, Radiation Therapy and Chiara Villasenor, Academic Scheduler Lisa Li Before joining Michener’s Chiropody clinic as receptionist, Lisa Li originally volunteered there. Lisa moved to Canada two years ago from mainland China, where she majored in education and worked for five years at a training company and gained experience as a student coordinator and educational administrator. She is looking forward to interacting with Michener faculty, students, and patients. Her adaptability and willingness to learn new things are just some of the qualities she brings to her new role. Besides traveling, one of her favourite activities is redecorating her home, and she rearranges her furniture every few months. Rita Li Rita Li moved here from China four years ago, and she first came to Michener as a co-op student in September 2011 in the Finance Department. After her

term finished, she stayed on as a parttime accounting assistant. A recent graduate of the Business Administration - Accounting Program at George Brown College, Rita was excited to start her first full-time job as assistant accountant. She cites the warm and caring community here at Michener for making her coop and part-time experience the best, and she is looking forward to getting involved and contributing in return. A detail-oriented person with great organizational skills, Rita hopes to pursue her Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation on a part-time basis. Roseli Melo Roseli first came to Michener in 2011 and worked briefly in the Centre for the Advancement of Simulation and Education (CASE). In May 2013, she returned to work in the Facilities department as Client Services Coordinator (for CASE and events for external clients). Originally from Brazil, Roseli studied advertising in college. When she came to Canada she studied in a postgraduate program in Advertising Account
Management at Centennial College.
She is excited to work with the Facilities team in a customer service role, as she enjoys helping and interacting with others. In her spare time, she likes to get together with friends, watch movies, and go dancing. She has a daughter named Mariana, who is currently working and studying in Brazil. Mariana has lived with diabetes since she was ten years old and Roseli is incredibly proud of how her daughter has managed her health. They also have a cat named Nicky, who is living with Mariana. Jack Perejuan Jack Perejuan comes to Michener all the way from Perth, Australia. As Helpdesk Customer Service Representative, Jack brings expertise from a wide range of experiences. He has worked on small and large Helpdesks for institutions including the Australian Police, the Department of Education, the Department of Land, and even the mining giant BHP Billiton. When he moved to Canada in November 2012, Jack experienced a snowy winter for the first time while working for 6 months at a ski resort in British Columbia.

His great passion is music, having studied it at Lake Joondalup College in Perth. Toronto’s bustling music scene drew him here, with its many opportunities. He plays guitar, piano, and drums, and produces his own music. Brianne Tulk Brianne Tulk is the new Communications Associate at Michener. She recently finished her M.A. in Communication at the University of Ottawa, with a focus on health communication. Before that she was
the marketing and communications coordinator at the Classical Theatre Project, where she did a lot of work in graphic design, social media, and a little bit of web design. Brianne’s academic
work has explored the role of communications in health care as it relates to health care delivery, concepts of health and public perceptions of health care.
