The Line King

© C. Sherline / Frog Prince Studios

By Scott Sullivan

I

bought a box of trashcan liners at the store. “Do you want a bag for that?” the clerk asked. A bag for my box of bags? Does it ever end? It’s great we love running stuff so much that we have too much of it. It provides jobs inventing shoes with springs in them, Fitbits, fuel belts and more encumbrances to facilitate the most basic of activities. People make, package, sell and distribute things all the while developing new versions to replace them. So we buy bags of boxes of bags to haul off to landfills. My Wants-vs.-Needs rant is typically tripped by waiting in store lines while the guy ahead says, “I need four packs of Marlboros, three Lotto tickets, two Dove Bars and a Partridge Family CD I couldn’t find. You’ll have to summon someone (likely a clerk who’s on break) to fetch it.” Do I want or I need to kill him? Then it’s my turn to madden the mob behind. The Circle of Life is not like that song in “The Lion King” where a monkey hoists baby Simba above a savanna that will vanish when humans fill it with stores and landfills.

As “The Line King” I rule over queues stretching to eternity to buy and return things we “need” that amount to garbage. I don’t mean segments of lines which end, but lines doubling back on themselves forever, like the equator. It is just as stressed to give as receive. What was Aunt Bea thinking when she bought me that fake mounted trout that flaps its tail and sings “How Dry I Am”? “Thanks for the gold, frankincense and myrrh,” I can hear Mary telling the not-so-wise men while thinking, “I really need baby powder.” “Simplify, simplify,” said Thoreau, who tried to work out his own complexities going to Walden. Simba was exiled and we too try to scale back activities to the most basic of them, running. Then we bury it under schlock we buy sold as “needs.” Hakuna matata (“no worries”) Simba learns before his father’s ghost calls him back to a kingdom that has turned corrupt in his absence. This, being Disney, ends more happily than the yarn it is based on, “Hamlet.” There’s a whole lotta dyin’ goin’ on in Shakespeare’s play. In “The Lion King” Simba is reconciled and the stage set for spin-off merchandise, Broadway musicals, endless sequels … As The Line King, I could bag it. But distance runners go on; every spin ‘round the sun is a new chance to see what our children make of the singing-trout world we’ve given them. They can’t thank us enough. It will be for their kids to see. - MR -

Fast Friends: The Power of a Running Group By Anthony Targan

R

“Fast Friends” Running Group

unning can be solitary. Most of us start that way and enjoy the tranquility of running by ourselves. But there is something to be said for the collective power and energy of running groups that help us reach our goals and aspire to more, both as runners and as human beings.

Home Base: West Bloomfield, although the weekend group runs vary in location. Often they include Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Detroit, Franklin, Kensington Metropark and the West Bloomfield Trail.

This article is the first in a series featuring Michigan running groups. I am starting with my hometown group, but hope to feature others in coming isues.

Origins: When Bill Valade retired from Ford in 2005, he started training to run a marathon with his daughter. Bill met Jean Yamamoto at a Running Fit group run, they started collecting email addresses of other runners who might want to join them for weekend runs, and “it just blew up from there,” Bill said.

Group Name: “Fast Friends.” OK, I just made that up because we have an identity crisis with no official name. At first, we were the “West Bloomfield Running Fit” group since many of our runs started at the local RF store, but that implied sponsorship and the name was dropped. My favorite (albeit temporary) name: “The WALTONS” which stands for We All Love To Own New Shoes. Our motto is “We run even when the sun shines!”

At times there are more than 200 runners in the group, although Jean and Bill annually prune the list to a core of about 50 regulars as people come and go. At first it was runners who developed friendships, but now Bill treasures his running family as friends for life. “If for some reason my wife Mary Ann and I couldn’t run anymore, we’d still have some very strong friendships,” he said. “My daughter got me started, but these people keep me running.”

8

Michigan Runner - May / June 2016

Support Group: Fast Friends are all about running, but at times it’s more like a “moving party,” said Lance Lis, who enjoys the regular afterglows at coffee shops or breakfasts hosted at runners’ homes. Other times it’s more like a support group, as Lance found out when he slipped and fell on icy pavement. He thought he’d just twisted his ankle, but other runners convinced him to go to the hospital for x-rays that revealed a broken leg requiring multiple surgeries. “I was fortunate to be with a group that sacrificed their own workouts to care for me when I fell, arranged rides to get me back to my car and then to the hospital, and determined that I needed emergency medical care (overruling my own bad judgment),” Lance remembered. “Their concern and dedication resulted in timely treatment that cured the injuries enough that I was not only 100 percent, but even faster after the injury than before!”

4/7/16 3:44 PM P

Angie Long spoke of how Fast Friends got her through a difficult period in her life. She trained with the group for her first marathon while her mom was undergoing chemo treatments for cancer. “She found out just a couple months before we ran the marathon that she was cancer-free,” Angie said. Traditions: In addition to group runs and races (Detroit, Boston and Bayshore marathons are favorites), Fast Friends has an annual fall banquet to celebrate successes and discuss future plans. There’s even a traveling trophy to recognize someone who has made a significant contribution to the group for the year; it’s awarded by the prior year’s winner. The group organized an unofficial out-andback beer mile from one member’s house, which raised money for the Rock CF Foundation. There’s also a runners book club that includes about 20 women, but non-running book topics are the norm. Nicknames: As with any fraternity, you know you’ve been accepted when you are tagged with a term of endearment. Some of my favorites from Fast Friends include Queen Bee, Special K, Mamamoto, Hot Hands, Rabbit Rick, Arvin, Fast Eddie, Nemo, Brownie, Coastguard Tom, NASA Jim, Tall Andy, Professor and Mary Ann, Pusher, Wild Bill, BZ, Sparkplug, Dr. Fruitfly, Batman & Robin, Chicago Joe (who is not from Chicago) and my

own, A-Train. Tom Artushin used to be “Hot Tamale” but now he’s just “F’n” (long story). Diversity: Almost every runner I interviewed talked about the diversity of the group. Shane Angove appreciated the “wide mix of people. I don’t get the same type of camaraderie in mountain biking. Here it doesn’t matter what your equipment is, your age, speed, sex ... nothing.” The group includes people from various races, religions, gay and straight, single and married, old and young. There are runners of all abilities: fast, slow, run/walkers, ultra-marathoners and non-racers. Kim Wattrick grew up in Grosse Pointe but now lives in Washington, D.C. She makes it a point to run with Fast Friends whenever she comes home because, “People from Michigan and the Midwest are the friendliest in the country. They immediately make you feel welcome and part of their community, whether you’ve been here one time or 100 times.” Anthony Targan is a regular contributor to Michigan Runner magazine. St. Patrick’s Parade Corktown Races, Detroit

Liquid Sunshine Adds to Corktown Cheer By Kacey Tulley

DETROIT (3/13/16) — There was liquid luck o’plenty for 34th annual St. Patrick’s Parade Corktown Races. The 5K was flooded with participants, 500 of whom took part in the first-year Dublin Double (the Emerald Mile and 5K).

Fun began with a quarter-mile run for wee ones. Quick as leprechauns, the tiny tykes splashed through puddles to make the most of their early morning. Next came the Emerald Mile, won by Ovidiu Olteanu in 5:02 and Amber Dermyre in 5:32. Taking the men’s 5K title was Jon Gries in 15:10. Next came Joel Schut in 15:44, then Mike Anderson and Nicholas Stanko in 15:46.

Race director Doug Kurtis said more than $9,000 was collected from runners to support the St. Patrick’s Senior Center and KPMG Family for Literacy programs. Additional race proceeds went to these two and other nonprofit groups.

Megan Vogelsong paced the women in 18:21, followed by Mary Anne Lloyd and Kristie Kniaziew in 18:26.

“If I am signed up for a race, I have to run no matter what the weather,” said another four-year race veteran, Michelle Halloran. “It makes me feel like I deserve the medal, green beer and chips at the finish even more.”

Ann Arbor Marathon, Ann Arbor

Popielarz Sets Ann Arbor Course Record at Marathon Debut

“I was expecting to be a little under six minutes per mile for the race,” said Popielarz, 24, of Ann Arbor. “But early on we were running 5:40s, maybe even 5:30s, and it felt comfortable. So I kept rolling.” Tackling hill after hill on a frigid morning, Popielarz broke away from the pack midway through the race.

“I’ve run these roads a million times, so I was very familiar with the route,” the winner said. “It’s a beautiful course. A lot of it was along the (Huron) river. We saw the sun rising over it, which was magical.”

He finished nearly 15 minutes ahead of runnerup Chris Elsey, 30, of South Lyon, who crossed in 2:43:42. Greg Kuhl, 29, of Canal Win-

chester, Ohio, took third in 2:57:52.

Popielarz seemed unfazed by the 20something-degree cold. “It was perfect,” he said. “It was chilly at the start, but there was no wind. And it was sunny for a lot of it.”

Amanda Cooke, 35, of Columbus, Ohio, gave it everything she had in winning the women’s race. After crossing the finish line in 3:08:11, she collapsed under a table full of water bottles.

ANN ARBOR (4/3/2016) — Matt Popielarz broke his roommate and former University of Michigan teammate Zach Ornelas’ Ann Arbor Marathon course record of 2:34:32 set last year, winning the sixth annual running in his debut at that distance in 2:29:33.

A runner celebrates as he nears the Ann Arbor Marathon finish line.

Cooke spent a good 15 minutes in the medical tent before emerging recovered. “I was exhausted,”

she said. “I was looking for sub three hours, but it wasn’t happening. It was very challenging.”

This was Cooke’s first win in the 12 marathons she has run. She described the course as the toughest race she has ever run. “There are hills the whole way, very few flat places,” she said. “It seemed to get colder as the race progressed.”

Michelle Magagna, 25, of Ann Arbor captured second in 3:14:06. Angela Taylor, 34, of Mercer, Pa., placed third in 3:23:57. Jake Kasperski, 24, of Perrysburg, Ohio (1:15:14) and Kirstie Kniaziew, 41, of Leamington, Ontario (1:27:00) were the men’s and women’s halfmarathon winners. “I’m training for Boston and was looking for a difficult course to run before that,” Kasperski said. “I thought the hills would simulate what Boston is going to be like.”

“Not great, but I’ll take it for now,” Kniaziew said of her time.

Ann Arbor residents Brian Desmond, 24 (34:13) and Amanda Weaver, 25, claimed the 10K. Alex Williams, 31, of Caro (18:48) and Sabreen Uddin, 41, of Canton (19:16) won the 5K. Williams ran shirtless. “It was really cold!” he admitted.

The combined races drew more than 3,000 participants. For complete results, go to http://theannarbormarathon.com. - MR 14

Running Shorts with Scott Hubbard Trivia: What month has seen the slowest fastest men’s and women’s times ever in the marathon?

Star Spangled Banner.

I’ve introduced the national anthem before many running-related events through the Scott Hubbard years, some renditions recorded and others live. For the most part, people in attendance are fine with either, but listen more intently to live efforts. It’s a tough tune to sing, much less instill something extra that rings sweet and patriotic. I only recall two male versions: a Motown group before the Detroit Free Press Marathon one year and Riley McLincha many times. My favorite of his was before a women’s-only race in Flint about 10 years ago. Anita Baker sang the anthem twice before the Free Press Marathon.

I’ll skip discussing the only version that made me cover my ears and note my favorite performances came from Laurel Gault, daughter of Gault Race Management’s Anne Gault, before the Mackinac Island 8-mile and one from a hastily-recruited reserve runner from the Brighton girls cross country team before a cross regional. Laurel has an opera background and her anthem was soaring, powerful and drew sustained applause. The last-second song by the prep runner was simple, beautiful and perfect.

Jog.

Anybody get peeved if somebody asks, “What brand of tennis shoes do you wear?” or tells you, “I saw you jogging yesterday”? Tennis shoes? Jogging?

It doesn’t settle the matter, but there’s a nice piece on the j-word by Mark Remy in the April issue of Runner’s World, tackling the term from multiple angles, including how it’s become such a go-to way to describe, um, running. My Webster’s New World Dictionary takes the high road: “Jogging: the practice of trotting at a slow, steady pace for some distance as a form of exercise.” By the end of my running days in 2008 (arthritic foot), I had to acknowledge I was moving at a much-diminished pace from even 10 years before. Being secure in my feelings as a “runner,” I would have probably agreed if somebody had said they had seen me jogging.

Shamrocks & Shenanigans Draws Throngs Despite Rain By Tracey Cohen ANN ARBOR (3/13/16) -- With 1:06 to spare, Justin Heck reigned as champion of the 16th annual Shamrocks & Shenanigans in 16:02 on a rainy day with temperatures in the 40s. Erik Potere (17:09) and Frank Janssen (17:18) finished 2-3. Paul Mayer (17:51) topped the masters.

Angerman promised to provide Williams a medal upon submission of her 5K “race” time run in her home state and is considering adding a virtual alternative in 2017.

Natalie Mackenzie claimed the women’s title in 19:11, followed by Erica Dancik (19:55) and Christina Draijer (20:07). Danie Matusik was the best woman over age age 40, crossing in 22:11.

Race director Steve Angerman was pleased with the 1,400-plus turnout. “There were noshows due to the rain,” he said. “But we also had quite a number of race-day registrants.”

The fundraiser for the Save A Heart program at the University of Michigan’s Mott Children's Hospital even drew “Tar Heels,” aka North Carolina residents. Lauren Williams, who “stumbled upon” the race and learned what its cause was via Facebook, reached out to Angerman. Williams’ son Benji, 2, was diagnosed in utero with a heart defect. “The boy who shouldn’t have lived” has thus far defied the odds, thanks in large part to Jennifer Nelson, a cardiac thoracic surgeon who did her residency at Mott. 43. 7 Marathons, 7 Continents, 7 Days By Ron Marinucci

’ve written about runners who have done marathons on all seven continents and ones who have finished seven marathons (or longer) in seven days. But not about a person who’s run seven marathons in seven days on seven continents … until now.

At Grand Ledge High “I was hooked on cross country and track,” he said. Ramm’s dream was deferred by a bone tumor on his hip, which required two surgeries. He wasn’t able to run until his junior and senior years, mostly competing in the middle distances.

During the last week of January, Cal Ramm did just that. With 14 others, he ran seven marathons within one week in Antarctica, South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Ramm started running at Grand Ledge Middle School in 2000 “as a way to condition myself for basketball,” he remembered, “although I never did make that team.”

Cal Ramm and a fellow marine set a course record in at the Antarctica Marathon, the first of seven marathons that were part of the World Marathon Challenge.

He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy and joined the running teams there. “I was never a competitive athlete,” he conceded. “I never traveled with the teams, only trained for my first two years.” Intent on changing that, Ramm ran more than 1,000 miles the summer before he became a junior. “It was the first time in my life that I felt I was taking running seriously,” he said. The day before he returned to Annapolis, he broke his big toe playing Frisbee. He needed surgery again, plus a cast that he wore six months. To get over the mental blow and motivate himself, Ramm registered for the Marine Corps Marathon six months away. The night before that race, “I got about one hour of sleep due to military duties. I didn’t think it was a big deal,” he said. He hit the half in 1:17:36. “I felt good and, not knowing what was in store, and continued at that pace,” Ramm said. “At mile 22 I almost hit the pavement. The last two miles I was barely conscious. “I collapsed at the finish and was unconscious for about three hours afterward,” he continued. “It was awful, yet I was hooked. I just wanted to go faster.” He joined the Marine Corps, for which duties led to four years of sporadic training: 200 miles some weeks, 50 others. He ran several other marathons, including one in Lansing. 18

Michigan Runner - May / June 2016

By 2015 Ramm had joined the Corps Running Team, “training competitively with members,” he continued. “Looking to run a race in Antarctica, I stumbled across the ‘7x7x7’ — the World Marathon Challenge. I couldn’t pass up an opportunity like that. So I signed up in January 2015.” He trained from February to October, not specifically for the WMC but Marine Corps Marathon again. Running it with his team was a priority. A pinched nerve in his foot forced him to drop out at mile 16. Thwarted again. “I was crushed,” he said. Ramm took off three weeks to let his foot heal, but a malaise hung over him. “I wasn’t worried about being in shape,” he remembered. “I figured, with years of training, I could bounce back pretty quickly.” His mental state was the problem. “Not finishing my last marathon and knowing I was now going to run seven in a row was daunting,” he conceded. The Semper Fi Fund, a charity founded to support the Marines, spurred him on. “I realized this race couldn’t be about me,” said Ramm. “It was time I ran for somebody else.” He became one of the Semper Fi Fund’s community athletes. “Running has always been much more than a

hobby for me,” he went on. “It’s been a venue to vent my frustrations, clear my head and help sort out life’s challenges. It’s a natural healing process. “The Semper Fi Fund does a great job of capturing that for service members it supports. Instead of just helping them for a short stretch, it provides people opportunities to heal daily through sports programs, recovering through athletics. “There are few better ways to heal, especially for service members.” Healed, Ramm resumed his training. “I felt good,” he said. “By the time I was packing for South America, I was happy with my fitness and looking forward to whatever the challenge were in store.”

WMC organizers took care of all the logistics. “They did a great job,” Ramm said. “I never worried about not hitting a deadline or missing a flight. I only had to worry about my running.” He flew to Punta Arenas, Chile, then Union Glacier, Antarctica. The entire team spent about four days there. “It might have been three,” Ramm said. “The sun never set, so I have no idea.” Using the days to acclimatize, he helped with the Antarctica 100K, which preceded the Challenge marathon. The Antarctica Marathon involved running four laps of a course on Union Glacier. Ramm joined a fel-

low Marine “who became my running companion for the duration of the trip,” to cross the finish together. Their 3:31 set a course record. “It was a good way to start,” he said.

race in Spain started less than 14 hours after the finish in Miami. “The 10-lap, out-and-back course through a scenic park was nice,” he said, “but the hard running surface took its toll.”

Within hours, it was back to Punta Arenas. He took an ice bath, slept and “woke up ready to run, but with a pretty bad headache.” Ramm ran “a conservative pace, but by the end my competitive nature took over. I put in a few sub-5:40 miles.” That allowed him to finish in 3:13, “a little faster than I would have liked, but happy overall.”

At mile 20, a sharp pain in his shin appeared. “Some icy hot-like cream helped a bit,” recalled Ramm, who finished in 3:39. “I knew I might be in trouble, though.” He didn’t realize the shin pain was the beginning of a stress fracture.

Not flying to Florida until the next day, team members slept their longest, 10 hours, enjoyed pizza and some beers. The Miami course was four repeats of an out-and-back stretch of the South Beach Boardwalk. The race went smoothly and another “conservative pace” led Ramm to a 3:28 finish. “Fatigue was starting to set in,” he admitted, but there was no time to rest. It was off to Madrid. The

After Madrid, the team had 90 minutes to catch the flight to Morocco, which took another 90 minutes. An hour later, in the dead of night, the marathon in Marrakesh started. The course, 10 laps around a city lot, wasn’t friendly; the surface was a mix of asphalt, brick and tile. At mile nine, “my shin was hurting so much I took the patella band I was wearing on my knee and wrapped it around my shin,” Ramm remembered. It worked as he finished in 3:33. “But the damage had been done,” he said. “I knew I had something worse than shin splints. “We had a pretty good flight from Morocco to Dubai, but it didn’t help. Neither did the four or five hours we had after landing.”

out that the races and experience were over than I was happy to have finished.” Thanks again to event staff, flights and timetables were met without hitches. Rest and food weren’t real problems either, since there was little time to worry about or take care of them. What little sleep came was usually on the planes. Eating often took place in airports: “any sort of greasy fast food I could get my hands on,” Ramm remembered. He ate many protein bars and energy gels, washing them down with water and sports drinks. “It was a strange diet, but being a Marine I was pretty used to it,” he continued. “I had a beer or cocktail or wine at each location, post-race. After all, I couldn’t do the World Marathon Challenge without trying the local spirits. “I will always be a runner, looking to push my limits. But this time it was worth something more than any medal or record could be. Those dollars (raised through the Semper Fi fund) meant something to someone. They helped people who did more than I ever did in a race,” he said. Donations to the fund still can be made at http://fundraising.semperfifund.org. - MR -

Cal Ramm wears a big smile along with three of the medals he won by finishing 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days.

The race in Sydney was a 13-lap brick course on Manly Beach. After what Ramm called “some crazy thoughts, I realized finishing was all that mattered.” Taking ibuprofen, he ran comfortably to finish in 3:38. The challenge was over “faster than I anticipated,” he went on. “I was more bummed

10

He was able to ice his legs again and ate. But early in this sixth marathon, Ramm’s shin pain was joined by a swollen ankle. More ice, compression wraps and painkillers didn’t have much effect. He had thoughts of walking the rest of the marathon, figuring he could still finish within the eight-hour limit. But Ramm came on another option: he removed his shoes and ran barefoot. “I don’t know why or how,” he said. “But it worked. I continued to run.” At the 20mile mark, he put on his shoes again and felt good enough to average sub-eight-minute miles to finish in 3:58 . “I was happy with my effort and even happier to have a 14-hour flight to Australia for our last marathon,” he said.

Groundhog Marathon, Grand Rapids

Vader Conquers Rare ’Easy’ Groundhog Course By Michael Zuidema

GRAND RAPIDS (2/6/16) — The Groundhog Marathon discovered the power of the Dark Side this year. That’s because the fourth annual event played host to Darth Vader.

“Anybody can run when it’s nice outside, when it’s sunny and pretty and everything like that, but it takes true commitment to come out here in the middle of winter.” That’s the kind of sentiment race director Don Kern likes to hear, especially after he heard a few grumbles following the snow and ice that pounded his previous three events. This year, he received joking complaints about the sunny skies and mostly-clear trails.

This wasn’t the character from the “Star Wars” canon, however. It was the affable 43year-old resident of Canandaigua, N.Y., who legally changed his name from Eric Welch to Darth Vader in 2014 after his daughter left for college and he was searching for a “rebirth.”

“This has become a great cult classic race, with runners coming back year after year wondering how bad it can possibly get,” Kern said. “A couple runners were acting disappointed that the weather wasn’t kicking their butts again. We’re hoping the great conditions and trails this year will prompt more runners to come out and have fun with us in 2017.”

“I just wanted to,” he said with a shrug. “Why not have some fun with it?”

Vader stood out amongst the nearly 500 participants, but not because he was carrying a lightsaber or using “The Force.” The Marine Corps veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Storm was unmistakable wearing a gas mask throughout the half marathon while carrying the American flag — which all the runners turned to face when the national anthem was sung prior to the race.

Not bad for someone who battled leukemia and a bone marrow disorder more than a decade ago.

That’s the same routine he has followed since he started running about five years ago. Since then, Vader has completed 45 Tough Mudders, 21 half marathons and three full marathons. He’s scheduled to run 15 more half marathons this year.

Darth Vader completed the 13.1 miles in 3:23:08 after driving through the night from central New York state.

“I have a real bad leg, so I was discouraged from running because it was very painful until I got fitted with a prosthetic brace from the military,” Vader said. “It’s alleviated the aches and the pains from the stress I put on my body. Because of the relief, I decided to get out and do some runs.”

Wearing black shorts and a black Wounded Warrior Project t-shirt during unseasonably-warm winter temperatures, Vader completed the 13.1 miles in 3:23:08. 20

The warm weather created a fast course, which consisted of six loops on the closed Kent County Trails course for a full marathon and three for half that. Jacob Flynn of Traverse City won the men’s marathon in 3:00:09, while Cindy Huntington of Portage paced the women in 3:18:09. Jason Lafave of Sanford and Felicia Slate captured the half marathon titles in 1:20:34 and 1:36:26, respectively.

Michigan Runner - May / June 2016

After driving through the night from central New York, he had hoped to encounter the intense level of wintery weather that has challenged past Groundhog Marathon participants, but said he still enjoyed the atmosphere and Michigan.

“I wanted it to be the worst conditions possible. I want fire, ice, snow and winds,” Vader said. “I like the adverse conditions because, selfishly, it makes it harder for everybody else and I feel I can ‘out-tough’ some people.

On Friday, Feb. 5 — the night before — Gregory Stevens of Grand Rapids won the 1/6 Moonlight Marathon in 29:41. Sharon Carr of Grand Rapids paced the women in 36:34.

Kern hopes next year’s event proves a little more challenging for runners.

“Finishing the Groundhog Day Marathon or Half Marathon has become a badge of honor,” he said. “Usually, if you can get through this one, you can get through most anything.” - MR -

Book Review

Caesar Eyes Crossing ‘Rubicon’ of 2-Hour Marathon By Dave Foley

T

“Two Hours: The Quest to Run the Impossible Marathon,” by Ed Caesar, 2015. 256 pp. Hardcover. Simon & Schuster.

he goal is to run 1:59:59 for the marathon. That’s a 4:35-per-mile pace: fast enough to win most high school mile races. How that might happen spread over 26.2 miled is the focus of Ed Caesar’s book.

dropped, sometimes minutes at a time, some say a sub-two-hour marathon is unattainable. They believe the current elites are performing near the limit of human possibility. The majority point to the likelihood of a sub two-hour performance, based on developments in training and athletic management, advances in shoe

One intriguing section discusses shoes. Now we’ve seen barefoot running and/or wearing skintype shoes doesn’t lead to optimum marathon performance, focus is again on the build of shoes. Do people with different leg and muscle structures need different shoes? This is discussed in detail and made me think about how I’ll buy my next racing flat. Caesar further studies how runners race. For years, so-called experts have called for running an even pace if not negative splits. But Sammy Wanjiru’s 2008 Olympic marathon gold medal and Mutai’s Boston time both came from aggressive front-running strategies.

In an opening section, he runs through the history of the marathon in which he hits well-known points but also brings in human-interest details. It’s the best recitation of marathon history overall I have seen.

Then there are drugs. In the past two years, several East African distance runners have tested positive for performance-enhancing substances, including steroids and EPO, which stimulates red-blood-cell production, hence transport of oxygen in the bloodstream. A 2012 investigation also found evidence of blood transfusions and human growth hormone in Kenyan runners.

Dennis Kimetto of Kenya holds the current world record at 2:02:57. With runners from Kenya and Ethiopia having recorded the fastest 48 times ever at the distance (Ryan Hall of the U.S. is 49th at 2:04.58), Caesar focuses his study on those two lands. Traveling to Africa, he gets to know running elites and see firsthand how they train.

Ironically, the attraction of drugs isn’t so much to enhance performance as to help runners recover quickly so they can maintain their punishing training. This allows them to use drugs and still show no traces when tested just before or after races.

He examines their training, which is essentially high-intensity and high-volume: a mixture of speedwork sessions lasting longer then an hour daily. To do that, these athletes must have tremendous determination and be willing to endure whatever pain it takes to attain their goal. Caesar, like others who have studied the Kenyan runners, learns the champions invariably come from the Kalenjin tribe. He wonders is this is due to their genetics, the high altitude where members live, diet, cultural practices or unique physiology. One possibility is sheer numbers. Almost every tribe member runs. Caesar spends time with Geoffrey Mutai, whose 2:03:02 at the 2011 Boson Marathon would have been a world record had it not been disallowed because it was on a point-topoint course with a strong tailwind that day. Their talks provide insight not only into how Kenyans prepare physically for races, but how they summon the mental strength to endure the physical pain of running so far and fast. Ethiopian Haile Gebreselassie, who won two Olympic gold medals in the 10,000 meters, summed it up this way: “Records were broken in the mind before they were with the feet.” Although marathon records have

and drink technology, and the momentum that comes when records drop close to what was believed to be unattainable.

Caesar’s book is comprehensive, yet his writing style doesn’t bog down. You don’t have to be a running fanatic to be entertained. “Two Hours” so captured my interest it was only a two-day read. - MR -

Kona Shamrock Run, Plymouth

Bragg, Grabau Do Dublin Double Duty at Kona Run By Charles Douglas McEwen

Jennifer Blindert didn’t mind.. “My birthday is actually on St. Patrick’s Day,” said the 29-year-old Lake Orion resident. “I try to do at least one St. Patrick’s Day race a year, and this was my last before I turn 30.” She gave herself a nice present by running away with the Hard Rock Mile, beating all comers of both sexes. She couldn’t believe her 5:14 time.

“That seems almost unreal, but I’ll take it,” Blindert said.

Zane Grabau, 27, of East Lansing matched Bragg’s Dublin Double on the men’s side, claiming the 10K in 34:14 and 5K in 16:50.

Laura Henk (bib 2080) and Joanne Oakey (bib 2273), both of Shelby Township, ran the 5K with matching times, 40:15, and matching outfits.

Men’s winner Chris Freeman of Holland was second overall in 6:56. Adding to the race’s Irish flavor, Tristan and Owen O’Sullivan of Pinckney finished 2-3 in 7:03 and 7:34 respectively. Brooke Freeman of Holland (10:21) and Hala Dent of Plymouth (10:25) were the second and third women. Another big winner winner was Kelsey Bragg, 26, of Royal Oak, who captured the the Shamrock Run “Dublin Double” by winning the women’s 10K

22

Larusso of Ypsilanti (43:02) finished 2-3 among women in the 10K. Trailing Bragg in the 5K were Josephine Weeden of Ypsilanti (21:39) and Lexie Jorgens of Macomb (21:57).

in 39:33 and 5K in 19:32.

“I ran a marathon last week,” Bragg said. “So I didn’t have great expectations. But 39:33 was a decent time. “As for the 5K, I’d never broken 20 minutes before. I should run a 10K before every 5K, I guess,” she said.

Erin Cvengros of Royal Oak (41:59) and Erin

“I haven’t run a race since the Grand Rapids Marathon last October,” Grabau said. “I mostly came here to get in a little more speed work and competition before doing another marathon this spring.”

Mitchell Dale of Rochester Hills (35:04) and Robert Cameron of Brighton (35:45) took second and third in the 10K. Dale placed second in the 5K in 17:13, followed by Shane Logan of Clarkston in 17:39.

The Shamrock Run, presented by Kona Running Co. and St. Mary Mercy Livonia Hospital, drew more than 2,600 registrants. For complete results, go to everalracemgt.com. - MR -

Running with Tom Henderson

F

irst, a backward glance at the winter past.

Tom Henderson

Man, I wish snowshoe racing would catch on. Randy Step’s Big Foot Boogie certainly has caught on. Every year the event, held at the Timber Ridge campground in the woods outside Traverse City, sets records for attendance. About 500 finished either the 5K or 10K this year.

But for too many of those folks a snowshoe race is a once-a-year event, a unique form of suffering that needs not be repeated for another 12 months. The other snowshoe races go begging for entrants. Thank goodness for those who put snowshoes on and keep doing so. But alas and alack for those who have held a few and decided the costbenefit ratio was out of whack.

In recent years, too many snowshoe races have come and gone: the Snow Monkey 5K just west of Traverse City, a 5K at Brengman Brothers vineyard on the Leelanau Peninsula, a 5K at the 45 North vineyard in the Leelanau and a 5K and 10K at the Camp HayoWent-Ha Boy Scout camp on Torch Lake. A few dozen entrants year after year eventually didn’t seem worth the bother.

Thank goodness for the Leelanau Outdoor Center, the Emmet County parks and rec folks who run the Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga park east of Petoskey and the Grass River Natural Area folks near Bellaire, all of whom continue to avidly host their snowshoe races despite small turnouts. And of course, Randy. The director of the Grass River 5K and 10K isn’t bothered that only 35 to 40 show up to run or walk his events. There is just a tiny parking lot in the woods there, and he can’t fit in many more entrants anyway. A race highlight? All entrants get a big bowl of free homemade soup after the race at the Short’s Brewery in downtown Bellaire.

By Tom Henderson

No knock against Randy or Grass River, but my favorite race is the 5K at Pet-O-Se-Ga, a sprawling park and campground on beautiful Pickerel Lake. The park is jammed in the summer, generally void of folks in the winter, so park parks and rec officials are thrilled to have 20 to 25 runners and walkers show up for their two-loop course on a groomed trail. The highlight there is all the food to warm your innards later: hot dogs, chili, granola bars and other snacks.

The 5K at the Leelanau Outdoor Center near the top of the Leelanau is memorable too, mostly for its ridiculously tough first uphill mile, heading up a long ridge in the forest that seems to go on forever. In fairness, so does the long, glorious downhill to follow. There’s plenty to eat after, including two kinds of homemade soup, and a warm thank-you from volunteers who seem thrilled that 35 to 40 came out for their event. We’ll see you all next winter!

L

~~ ooking forward ...

To May, morel mushroom season and combining two of my favorite things: mushroom hunting and running. In recent years, I’ve used morel hunting as an incentive to get out in the woods during winter. Morels love to grow near the base of ash trees, which have a distinctive pattern on their trunks.

So now when I run in winter, I keep one eye on the trail, looking for roots and rocks, the other on the woods, looking for ash trees, which usually grow in clusters. When I spot ashes, whether it’s in Bird Hills Park in Ann Arbor, or Maybury State Park in Northville, or on the trails of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in the Leelanau, I make a mental note and return in spring. There’s nothing better than a run in the woods except for a run in the woods that ends with a bag filled with morel mushrooms.

A

rgh! Those damned concessions to age.

Which for me means starting at the back of the pack now, instead of the second row, which is where

I started all my races in my 30s and 40s, when I was running 17-minute 5Ks and 36- and 37-minute 10Ks.

Which means accepting somewhat graciously if not happily doing my 5Ks in 32 or 33 minutes, now. And counting 20 miles as a long, tough week, instead of the 60 or 70 miles of yore. Which means, in the spirit of competition, taking satisfaction from out-kicking that morbidlyobese 12-year-old, and in the spirit of gradually becoming less competitive, not fretting when the old shriveled woman with the dowager’s hump and funny shuffling stride nips me at the tape.

Me and the dog are still having fun. I just wish I was having less fun, meaning shorter-duration fun, meaning fun that would last a few minutes less because I was a few minutes faster. A few years ago I ran into a woman I hadn’t seen in a while, who back in the day was one of the best runners in Michigan. I asked her if she was still running. Of course, she said. Still racing?

“Why would I pay money to run slow?” she asked, dismissively. Like it was a stupid question.

Well, for the same reason you’d pay to run fast. To get out with other people. To do your best. To beat all those you could. To work hard. To kick that morbidly-obese 12-year-old’s butt.

I ran into an old buddy at the Shamrockers Run for the Gold 5K in East Jordan March 20. A top age-group runner for years, he was walking this year. Turned out he was fighting cancer, finishing up his chemo, sort of in remission, weak as can be, finally looking his 80 years instead of 10 or 15 younger. But by God he was out there, happy to be plugging along at the slowest pace of his career, smiling just as broadly as ever at the finish. Good for you, dude!

(A tip for those of you who race in northern Michigan. Put the Shamrockers Run on your calendar for next year. It’s put on by the Northern Striders Running Club, a tricky out-and-back with a long, gradual uphill before the turnaround. What makes this extra special is the race starts and stops at the East Jordan Snowmobile Club, with the entry fee including a big honking breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, toast and pancakes made and served by club members.) - MR -
