e have been conducting the Michigan Runners of the Year award since Ron Gunn was selected as our first in 1980. The award has gone through a number of iterations, this being one of them.
As you know, The Michigan Runner has gone through its own set of iterations since we began in 1979. We were born as a print publication in 1979, adding a newsletter and then a video component in 2001. We discontinued print in 2016 due to a softening of the market. Our journey, while not con-

cluding just yet, has certainly slowed and we are currently deliberating our next moves with the MR.

One of those moves was to allow the Ann Arbor Running Company to choose the 2018 Michigan Runner of the Year, a move that could become permanent.
Carter Sherline
We are bridging the space between the 2016 ROY by selecting two Michigan Runners of the Year for 2017, Gary Morgan and Carter Sherline. Yes, it is a bit unusual, but as a publisher I wanted to reward these two individuals for their roles in the running movement and the Michigan Runner over the last three decades. They both have a love of the sport and contribute their time and treasure in following and reporting on it. - MR Michigan Runner

n your running adventures, you might not have seen Carter Sherline, but he has most likely seen you. Carter Sherline has clicked the shutter on his cameras hundreds of thousands of times. He has been the Michigan
Runnner go-to guy for images for 25 years. He also has taken drone videos of many running events and golf courses. There has rarely been an issue of one of our publications, newsletters or videos that a Carter Sherline image has not appeared in.
It’s rare to find photographs of photographers themselves. Carter helped out a few years ago when he took this self-portrait.
Carter had his first involvement with running races in one of Emily’s races in downtown Detroit in 1978. He continued running races while in college as a chemistry student at the University of Michigan. He was a double major, Chemistry / Cell & Molecular Biology as well as president of the UM student chapter of the American Chemical Society & president of Alpha Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma (chemical professional fraternity, An accident in April 1983, while performing a chemical magic show as part of pledge ceremonies, put him in UM Hospital for 8 days, His magic trick made him into a roman candle. He needed something to focus on while his body and mind were healing, that something proved to be the 1984
Detroit Free Press Marathon.
He began to increase the number of his marathons and then met Sy Mah, who at that time held the record for most career marathons finished. Mah made an impression on Carter and he decided to join him. Sherline’s top year was 31 marathons with his final total reaching 400 at the Kalamazoo Marathon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpWMWAo_JZI . He raced in 27 states, Canada, England, & Barbados. In the mid-1980’s, Carter discovered the Ann Arbor Track Club and performed many duties as a club member. He headed up weekly all comers fun run track meets in summer & cross country meets in fall. He joined the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run Committee & served as Transportation Coordinator, Equipment Manager (defacto for all AATC activities) & Assistant Race Director.
In 1988 he had discovered the Hash House Harriers & hashing. He joined the Detroit kennel in October & then became a charter member of the Ann Arbor kennel that formed a few months later in February 1989. These 2 kennels Michigan Runner

merged years later when they realized they were pretty much the same group. He was also a member of the Motor City Striders, Downriver Runners, Toledo Roadrunners, Redford Roadrunners and New York Road Runners.
His event coverage as a photographer/videographer included U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, several US Marathon Trials, USATF Outdoor Championships, NCAA Outdoor T&F Championships (D1 & DII), NCAA Indoor T&F DI Championships, NCAA DI & DIII Cross Country Championships, various Big 10 & MAC Outdoor & Indoor T&F & XC Championships,

Carter Sherline, the Drone Ranger, flies a drone at the Ann Arbor Marathon.
Carter got his first photo paying gig in the early ’80’s and then caught on with the Michigan Runner and Editor Dave Foley’s watch. Later on he shot for the Michigan Golfer and then picked up video when the Golfer got
into that media in 2001. As GLSP video gigs picked up we asked Carter to become our drone pilot or “The Drone Ranger”. He has taped hundreds of events for us. Carter also volunteers at Community Television Network, CTN, in Ann Arbor and has since the late 1980’s.

various division MHSAA Outdoor LP T&F Finals, MITS State Finals and MHSAA XC State Finals. On the golf side, he covered the Buick Open, Jamie Farr / Marathon LPGA Classic, Ford Senior Players Championship, US Amateur, PGA Senior Championship, Western Amateur, Western Junior Amateur, Meijer LPGA Classic and the Volvik LPGA Classic.
Starting in mid-2012 he began sales of race images to individuals using the SmugMug platform. In many cases he has served as the official vendor for races. In doing so he has never changed his shooting philosophy into a mass production cookie cutter style that most photographers shooting events do. He says that he has tried to stay true to his editorial
style where any shot he takes could be the one published from that event.
Carter also shoots commercial & portrait photography, as well as editorial of subjects beyond running & golf. There you have it, an individual who has impacted our sport over the past three decades. - MR -

G
ary Morgan has brought the world to our Michigan Runner, Michigan Skier and Michigan Golfer readers and viewers over the years. His journey has been amazing. An Olympian in the 1988 Seoul Summer Games as a race walker, he has continued his attendance at Olympic venus since then. He began to bring our readers and viewers stories of the games beginning with the Beijing Games in 2008 and has contined through this year’s Winter Olmpics in South Korea. Besides that, he has brought our readers and viewers stories from 30 states, 11 foreign countries and seven continents. His exploits have been noticed, as he has been awarded: •
The Phidippides Award https://youtube.com/watch?v=iFQGBNPca4E • 50th Anniversary Oakland Community College Special Award https://youtube.com/watch?v=_6DEWc8IczQ • Jackie Joyner Kersee Award https://youtube.com/watch?v=dQGUzRiqRXg • Michigan Runner of the Year Award Morgan was an electrician for General Motors and since his retirement has, as he says, “lived life with a passion.” His unbelievable travel schedule has resulted in the moniker, "Mr. Ubiquitous"
Gary has put a lot of mileage on those legs that have done all those international marathons. He swears his Birkham Yoga is responsible for keeping him going and a healthy diet keeps him in shape.
Gary Morgan Event Coverage Resume We put this list together to support a request for credentials for one of Gary “other events” such as the Detroit Grand Prix. As you can see, Mr. Ubiquitous is a perfect nickname for Gary Morgan.
National Coverage Gary Morgan has a large lead in the race-walk at a race in Clark Lake, 2003. Gary continues to race for the New York Athletic Club. 8
