================================================================== Vote Until Midnight Tonight: Drubbler Riley McLIncha in TV Contest ================================================================== From Michigan's very own celebrity drubbler, Riley McLIncha: "I was featured today on a video (drubbling) on Regis and Kelly. I'm a finalist! I need your vote. If you vote you have a chance to win $1000 yourself! There is only a 12 hour window to vote ( Monday Aug 23, until 11:59 pm. Please vote NOW and tell, contact, spam your friends to vote too. Go to: http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/regisandkelly/index.html and look for Wild and Wacky talent contest. VOTE MORE THAN ONCE, IF POSSIBLE? Riley McLincha, (the Wildest and Wackiest guy you know)" Editor's Note: Requires registration; vote by clicking on white bullet next to the word "Vote". ============================================================ Riley McLincha: Crim's Biggest Cheerleader, By Ron Marinucci ============================================================ (Editor's Note: This week we'll be featuring Ron Marinucci's History of the Crim on our Website: http://michiganrunner.net. This is the first of four pieces.) Riley McLincha has been called the Crim’s “biggest cheerleader.” Indeed, he is a man of many Crim hats. The Clio resident is one of the 22 All-Crimmers, having run each of the 33 ten milers. “The Crim is the first race I’d ever done,” he admitted. “I didn’t know how dangerous it was” to run in the 90degree heat and high humidity of that inaugural event in 1977. “But I said, ‘Everyone else is. So I can, too.” He chuckled at the thought, “I didn’t know you could walk. But I saw others walking, so I figured ‘I can, too.’” In 1987, McLincha combined running with a hobby he’d picked up a few years earlier, juggling. He “joggled” the Crim that year. As if that weren’t daunting enough, five years later he began “drubbling.” In “drubbling” McLincha runs while dribbling three basketballs at once. He’s done every Crim since 1994 with his three basketballs. And he does more. He also sings the Star-Spangled Banner to kick off each Crim morning. “Riley

truly is the voice of the start when he sings the national anthem,” said race director Deb Kiertzner. “I’ve told him that’s his job as long as I’m race director.” He also serenades runners with The Spirit of the Crim, a tribute song he wrote himself. The retired General Motors skilled tradesman and beer connoisseur, who holds a degree in science, has also painstakingly researched all of the Crim finishes, compiling a database where all runners can find their times in the ten mile race for any year back to 1977. It can be found online at http://www.Crim.org/raceresults. McLincha continues to raise money for the Special Olympics. He has designed tee shirts, “Top Ten Reasons I Did not Win the 2008 Crim,” with all proceeds from sales going to charity. ============================================================ Michigan Runner September/October 2010 In Running Stores Now ============================================================ The September/ October 2010 issue of the Michigan Runner magazine is available in local specialty running stores now. Our cover story features the remarkable Megan Goethals, High School Runner of the Year 2009/2010. Megan is the only high school athlete to repeat this honor. Also in this issue are the Fall Shoe Review and Cross Country Shoe Review by Cregg Weinmann. ============================= To Stretch or Not To Stretch? ============================= USATF Announces Results of Pre-run Stretch Study To stretch or not to stretch? That's a question millions of runners ask themselves daily, but results from a USA Track & Field-sponsored clinical trial involving close to 3,000 runners confirm there is no difference in the risk of injury for those who stretched before running and those who did not. The study randomly assigned people to perform a specified pre-run stretching routine or to perform no pre-run stretching for a period of 3 months. Those people who completed the study and complied with their group had the same risk of injury (16%) regardless of which group they were in. Overall, stretching did not provide protection against injury. The study manager, Alan Roth, Ph.D., said, "For the study's specified pre-run stretching routine that millions of runners commonly use, the study puts to rest claims for and against it, but the devil is in the details. Using scientific method, we have arrived at some overall conclusions and learned some important details. If you've been doing pre-run stretching, it is best to keep doing it. A surprise finding was that many variables that we thought would strongly influence injury rates, didn't. For example, injury rates among women and men were similar while mileage, flexibility or level of competition also did not appear relevant. In general, younger runners fared no better than the older runners." The study's Principal Investigator, Dr. Daniel Pereles, a Maryland-based orthopedist, said that participants provided information on many relevant variables when they enrolled in the study, permitting a thorough analysis of potential risk factors for injury. Participants provided information on such things as age, gender, usual stretching regimen, miles run per week, years running, warm-up

activities, measurements of flexibility, concurrent diseases and medications, level of competition and so on. Two of the variables recorded were found to strongly influence injury rates; people with a higher bodymass-index were more likely to be injured as were people with a recent or chronic injury prior to participating in the study. Participation was limited to runners who had no injuries for the six weeks prior to the study. One additional risk factor was identified for people who informed us they normally stretch before they run. If they were assigned to stretch, they had a low risk of injury but if they were assigned not to stretch, the injury risk was double those who kept stretching. It's this result that most startlingly exhibits why people consider stretching to prevent injury. This study shows that those who are comfortable with their pre-run stretching routine should maintain it. They risk injury if they discontinue their pre-run stretching. For runners comfortable without pre-run stretching, they don't necessarily improve their injury protection by starting a pre-run stretching routine. Darby Thompson, the study statistician, commented, "With the number of runners who contributed to this study, we have shown that the difference in injury rates between those performing pre-run stretching and those who did not is negligible. Although we identified other very important risk factors (weight, prior injury, stopping a stretching routine), because this study was specifically investigating the effect of pre-run stretching, other risk factors may influence injury rates but were not identified. More studies like this one should be conducted to confirm or refute the importance of other risk factors." For more information on the stretch study, please contact Alan Roth at alan@alanroth.net or 301-9286314. For more details or to read the clinical findings, visit http://www.usatf.org. ======================================================================== Milford Labor Day 30K Has New Course, Free Burgers and Great Blues Band ======================================================================== The Milford Labor Day 30K, celebrating 10 years this year, is a wonderful long run for folks doing a fall marathon. Race Director Doug Klingensmith explains the course changes and more: "This year will be a new course. I know you have gotten use the horse shoe loop in through the parking lot, but life is always changing, so we have changed the finish to end right off Milford Road, in Holden's Parking Lot for an even faster finish. We will also start very close to the finish on Milford Road. Now you just get to guess where we have added the extra mile. Pay attentions to course marshals and signs so you don't get lost. (Race Directors Secret) "New this year your race entry includes a free Baker Burger or Veggie Burger along with the traditional unlimited, but do drink responsible beverage. I think it is beer? "Entertainment this year is a Blues Band called Wixom Slim and will be playing roughly from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. So, if you have friend and family to come watch remind them to stay for the great entertainment and awards." Doug also let us know that the in-line cycling will not be held this year. The 30K awards points in the Michigan Runner Race Series and Michigan Runner TV will be there to P. 4
