Student member of Standathon Travis Gendron said, “It legitimately does make a tangible difference for kids.” Gendron said that it costs only $80 for kids to stay at the camp for seven weeks because of donations.

“Without the donations, the cost would be much more.”

Each year Standathon sets a goal to raise a certain amount of money. Last year it was $6000 and this year it was $7000. They try to raise the amount by a little

each year to make a bigger difference. This year, they did not meet their goal but still raised $5000, which will make a huge difference in people’s lives.

Beneath the entire Standathon event is a small student organization that is really passionate about what they do. Watching how enthusiastic they were throughout the night was amazing to see. Gendron said the group is composed of 15 members, “who really value making a difference in the lives of others.” These student members start planning for Standa-

thon in the fall and that is their focus until the event occurs. Gendron said they hold some other small fundraisers, but Standathon is mainly what they do.

DHH Dining Hall changes “Residence hall students could use the Dining Dollar portion of their meal plans to purchase items at the new concept. There is a proposal for DHH residents to be able to use one exchange meal per day from their unlimited meal plans to purchase a meal combo from the new facility,” KATELYN WAARA Lode Writer Much has happened in the last year in terms of DHH’s dining hall operation. Initially, to cut back on costs because of a drop in funding from the state, Michigan Tech decided DHH would offer breakfast and lunch to its residents and those students living on-campus and, in addition, close both DHH and McNair dining halls on the weekends. That change itself was put into effect after residence hall recontracting dates, but frustration levels from students were minimal considering the cuts came at an inopportune time. Now, however, DHH may be turned into a retail dining space similar to the Campus Café in Wads or the Keweenaw Commons Food Mall in the Memorial Union Building and will provide healthier options to the campus community, causing some to believe the change may be moving too quickly.

In December of 2011, a committee known as the DHH Revisioning Task Force created a report with ideas and recommendations for the dining hall. Following that report’s submission to President Glenn Mroz, members of the Governmental Issues Committee, a group consisting to two or three members from each residence hall, in conjunction with the Inter-Residence Hall Council (IRHC), put together a recommendation letter against the

proposed report as a way to postpone its acceptance while student opinions were examined. According to IRHC Resident Advocate Christian Vreeland, not much feedback on the recommendation has been given.

Robert Hiltunen, Director of Auxiliary Services, said the Task Force’s report has been reviewed by the Executive Team and that the group gave the go-ahead for Auxiliary and Dining Services to make a business plan for the space over the spring break.

They were then instructed to report back following the students’ return. “The business plan is now under consideration by the Executive Team,” Hiltunen said.

No word has been given on whether the recommendation letter from IRHC has been looked over by the Executive Team thus far.

Auxiliary and Dining Services hope to hear back from the Executive Team soon to get into some of the final stages of the planning.

They would like to see an opening of the new and improved space in the coming months. Tentatively, the retail dining space would open at the beginning of the fall 2012 semester. John Troost, President of the IRHC, and his fellow members feel as though the plan may be moving too quickly, causing some concern in reference to how much students are being involved in the process. “In terms of student services, they’re cutting a major portion out of

the dining hall areas that are currently there… As students, we’ll be paying either the same amount or a little bit more for room and board rates next year, but at the same time they’ll be cutting services to us,” Troost said.

Without acknowledgement from Auxiliary and Dining Services or the Executive Team, how can the student body, including those members of IRHC, know that their concerns and suggestions are being thought about?

Because students are directly affected by the changes being made, there needs to be proper communication between the student body, IRHC and Auxiliary Services to ensure that all are represented properly. As it stands today, there seems to be a disconnection between the students and members of Auxiliary Services. Vreeland said the overall idea is great, but the way Auxiliary Services is going about the process is lacking input from the students on.

An issue which is of high concern specifically for those students living oncampus is meal-equivalency.

Because students living in the residence halls have unlimited swipe card access to the dining halls during their operating hours, what would that mean for the residents of DHH if their dining hall were turned into a restaurant-like facility? Under the current plan, DHH would be open for the continental breakfast provided to all students living in the residence

halls. “For lunch and dinner, it would operate as the retail facility,” said Troost. Vreeland added, “Auxiliary Services’ plan is recommending to the Executive Team that they (the students) be allowed one meal swipe a day there. A lot of the DHH students want that and preferably more and other students from McNair and Wads have expressed concern. Since everyone is paying the same amount for the same meal plan, they feel they should get a swipe, too,” Vreeland said. Because this new space would offer healthier options to residents, such as fresh salads and the like, the level of equality must be paid attention to. Much of the same food is served in the other halls and if DHH is dramatically different, students in the other halls may have mixed feelings on the equality issue. If everyone received that one (or multiple) meal swipe(s), the quality and availability of food would be even across the board for all on-campus residents.

Again, Auxiliary and Dining Services are in the planning stages and concerns can still be addressed if needed.

Although the historical,

aesthetic details of the dining hall will not change, it may get a technology upgrade. Dining Services would like to see the space carry an upscale feel while providing quick, convenient service and reasonably priced options to its customers. The retail space would be an area of social interaction and have a welcoming atmosphere. “This new dining concept must focus on healthy, organic, vegetarian, fresh foods which have particular appeal to the demographic groups of women, grad students, and faculty,” Hiltunen said. Students should know that the space, Hiltunen says, would not only help save on costs for the University, but also provide a different environment than that of the other dining halls. It would, most importantly, allow DHH residents to eat dinner in their own residence hall instead of having to go to Wads or McNair.

Remember, no plan has been finalized for the DHH dining hall. Word from the Executive Team on a decision will be expected in the coming weeks. At least for the rest of this semester, DHH will operate in its current manner. Perhaps next fall, upon returning to campus, students will have a new retail dining space that they will either enjoy or criticize.

History of the Calumet Air Force Base SAWYER NEWMAN Lode Writer Tucked away behind the large expanses of trees on Mount Horace Greeley, one of the highest points in Michigan, are the remnants of cold war surveillance operations and the subsequent community.

The Calumet Air Force

Base was established in 1950 during the Korean War, with its first radar towers becoming active on April 24, 1951 and April 23, 1954.

Initially, it was known as the 665th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. A portion of the squadron’s mission statement (as printed in 1987) was, “…to provide long range surveillance radar data and ground-airground communications in support of the Air Defense role of the 24th NORAD Region.

In 1958, the 665th Radar Squadron’s computer systems were integrated into the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment or SAGE. This update made the base much more effective at coping with the newer high-speed aircraft and missiles, which were a major concern.

In 1969, the Base took on Back Up Intercept Control Operations (BUIC III) and the squadron became known

as the 665th Air Defense Group. During this time, the base was responsible for the “air defense” of the 23rd Air Division. The 23rd Air Division covered nearly the entire Midwest, though it is now an inactive command organization.

January of 1974 saw further development of the base since during this time, BUIC III operations had ceased

and its primary mission was to provide surveillance data inputs to the 23rd Air Division through height finder radar and ground-air transmitters. The Calumet Air Force base would change its name slightly several more times before 1988, which was the last year of Air Force presence at the base, as surveillance was no longer a major issue at this time.

Throughout its active Air Force related years, the Calumet Radar Base worked in conjunction with what was formerly known as the K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base (now K. I. Sawyer International Airport), which began Air Force operations in 1956.

Large enough to be home to 7,000 workers at one point, K. I. Sawyer became a center for correspondence and NORAD missions. Furthermore, having its own b-52 Bombers, KC-135 tankers and several other types of fighter planes, the Air Force

base outside of Marquette was a direct link to D.C. This community, being fairly isolated because of its functionality as well as its location, had its own dining halls, dormitories, a medical aid station, a vehicle maintenance garage and a generator building. The 665th Radar Squadron made significant efforts to keep their operations and the number of people living in the Calumet Air Force Station low key.

Despite this desire to remain in the shadows, people tended to work at the base for relatively short periods, which would have meant a significant number of comings and goings. One man reportedly remembered, “The large amount of young recently married personnel, who arrived as newlyweds and left as parents.” Station facilities suggest strongly that there were a good number of children who had lived on the base. Such facilities included a Sunday

school, a Family Services office, a Youth Center and outdoor activity areas including a play ground and a baseball field. The majority of houses at the base were three bedroom houses but the base also featured one four bedroom and four two bedroom homes. There were also dormitories for single men.

Mr. North lived at the base with his brother when he was 14 and fondly remembers being a Boy Scout

in the Air Force Squadron Troop where he learned about, “winter camping in igloos, building snow sleds and competing.” Cruising through some of the comments on the digarch.lib. mtu.edu site, where more photos of the base can be found, one quickly gathers that living and working on the base tended to be an enjoyable experience.

Green Week During the week one project supported by SFES was the planting of seeds for this summer. Students were encouraged to come and plant various types of seeds on Tuesday at the event held in the Dow Courtyard.

Earth Week took place March 19 thru 24 and this year the Students for Environmental Sustainability (SFES) planned events in celebration of our planet.

World Water Day was also celebrated during the week and Chair of the U.S. Section

International Joint Commission Lana Pollack spoke about the Great Lakes.

Earth week has been celebrated since 1970, and each year an emphasis is put on enlightening the public about environmental problems and their possible solutions. Many activities are promoted during Earth Week; planting gardens, starting recycling programs and finding ways to improve efficiency in the home.

During the week one project supported by SFES was the planting of seeds for this summer. Students were encouraged to come and plant

various types of seeds on Tuesday at the event held in the Dow Courtyard.

“As of right now the seeds are in a greenhouse type environment, to give the plants a warm start, and keep them warm in case of a cold snap,” said SFES President Mollie Ruth. To create this effect, clear plastic two liter bottles were cut in half and filled half way with dirt.

Seeds were then placed in the soil. Repositioning the top half of the bottle created a mini greenhouse for the seeds to keep them warm until they are ready to be planted in the ground.

Continued from page 4 Because of the images conjured up with the somewhat secret base and the eeriness of such a modern looking abandoned settlement; the Calumet Air Force Base continues to be a fascinating place. The base has changed functions a couple of times after being decommissioned by the Air Force.

Under the county’s directions around 1.6 million dollars were used in

infrastructure improvements to convert buildings from military use to a youth correctional facility, which closed due to lack of funding in 2004. This usage of some of the facilities explained the large numbers of desks and seemingly other anomalous military oriented furnishings. Currently, the only facility in use is one of the two radar towers, which have been bought out by the AT&T phone company.

Out of the 100 containers that were planted, 80 of them will be replanted in the MUB gardens. Tech student Olivia Woitulewicz said “I enjoyed planting the seeds, and I’m excited to see them in front of the MUB in the fall.” Throughout the summer anyone on campus is welcome to take the herbs and vegetables that grow.

A variety of options were

given for planting seeds.

One of those was a seed that grows a flower with edible petals and leaves. Woitulewizc said, “I can’t wait for my Nasturtiums to grow! It will be exciting to eat the flower!”

The petals and leaves are supposed to have a peppery taste.

“Smart pills” get in the way of cognitive skills JESSICA KENNEDY Lode Writer While alcohol abuse is the most commonly known issue among college students, the scourge of prescription drug abuse has been rising in popularity throughout campuses across the United States. In the past few years, according to the National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE), the trend has become a particular problem.

Some of the most popular forms of prescription drugs college students are using

are Adderall and Ritalin, usually known as “smart drugs” or “study drugs.” Researchers studying the effects of these drugs say that despite the serious implications these drugs cause, they are becoming increasingly common among students.

Adderall and Ritalin are generally prescribed to those with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Ever since the revelation that these drugs have the adverse effect on those who don’t have ADD, they have become a normal way for students to help stay focused.

A recent college survey shows that nearly 25 percent

of college students are abusing “smart drugs.” Researchers say that these drugs are extremely appealing because they give students a measurable increase on concentration, motivation, and awareness. This allows students to study for hours without being distracted from other stresses or problems.

Using these drugs might sound like an easier method when helping cram for exams or to help pull all-nighters but because these drugs are amphetamine-based they can be highly addictive.

Addiction isn’t the only potential consequence from taking the “smart drugs”

though. While these drugs can help students stay focused, they can get in the way of other cognitive skills.

Dr. Nora Volkow, the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, says that taking these drugs inhibit your ability to think creatively or stay imaginative.

Scientists have found that drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin increase the brain chemical dopamine. The main reason people have so many complications with them is because these drugs are targeting the brain’s reward center. These drugs might not sound serious, but they can have serious

side effects such as heart problems, severe sleep deprivation, headaches and decreased appetite.

Selling these pills is considered a felony. These drugs can range in value but are generally sold depending on the dosage and when people need them. The prices rise during exam weeks and depend on how long the pills last.

Don Keranen Memorial Concert NICK BLECHA Pulse Editor The Michigan Tech Jazz program performed its annual Don Keranen Memorial Concert on Saturday, March 24. Both of its big bands, the R&D Big Band and the Jazz Lab Band, showed off their most recent efforts, while an alumni band consisting of Michigan Tech Jazz alumni from 1977 to 2011 joined in on a two-and-a-half-hour concert that served as a fitting end for the 2011-12 jazz season at Michigan Tech.

Both the R&D Big Band and the Jazz Lab Band were joined by two guest artists, both from the Twin Cities area. One of the two, Gus Sandberg, is a native of Chassell. He has a degree in music performance (saxophone) from the University of Wisconsin – Stephen’s Point, and has played with groups such as the Jack Brass Band, Mike Sterling, and the Irresistibles, and Dr. Mambo’s Combo. The other, Scott Agster, is a trombonist who studied for both bachelor and master’s degrees in music at the University of North Texas. He was worked with The Jack Brass Band, Salsa del Soul, and Tom Hunter and the Blues Frenzy.

The concert started with

the R&D Big Band playing Lady Marmalade. The group continued with Fancy Pants and The Funk Stomps Here.

The guest artists then joined in as soloists for Front Burner, and the group finished with Cold Duck Time and Libertango. Soloists included Josh March (trumpet), Scott Wambold (vibes), Eponine Zenker (piano), Alex Slepak (trombone), Sean Herrle (trumpet), Michael Polkinghorn (alto sax), Kaleb Elwert (drums), Clarence Hardwich (congas), and Raeanne Madison (tenor sax).

After a short mini-intermission, the 2012 Alumni Jazz Band came out to play. The Alumni band played Formula One, Get a Grip, Don’t Get Sassy, Broken Hearts, May’s Way, and The Doze Knows.

Soloists included Ken Riedel (tenor sax and clarinet), Alan Cross (trumpet), Larry Carbury (tenor sax), Tim Havens (bass sax), Rick Burchette

(alto sax), Russ Kerlin (tenor sax), Charles White (vibes), Rob Smith (trumpet), Mandy Kramer (trombone), Pete Wessel (guitar), and Pat Valencia (guitar).

Following the alumni band’s performance, a (standard-length) intermission was held; and then the Jazz Lab Band came out to finish the concert. The JLB performed a wide mix of songs, including Sister Sadie, Frame for the Blues, Emily, Easy Living, Cabeza de Carne, If I Could, and the well-known favorites Sing, Sing, Sing and MacArthur Park. Scott Agster soloed in Emily, Frame for the Blues, and Cabeza de Carne, while Gus Sandberg soloed in Frame for the Blues, Easy Living, and Sing, Sing, Sing.

Other soloists included Rebecca Prich (tenor sax), Eric Davis (trumpet), Geroge Olszewski (drums), Kyle Frazier (percussion), Grant Cox (alto sax), Samantha (piano), Nick

During the concert, director Mike Irish took the opportunity to announce the winners of the scholarships set up by Don Keranen’s son in his name. The winner of the scholarship for most improved musician was John Trochta, and the winner for outstanding musician was

Kyle Frasier, both of the Jazz Lab Band.

After the concert, a reception was held where food was served, the guest artists sold CDs of their work, and attendees could view photos and memorabilia of the jazz program throughout its history.

Swing the Night Away MANDY BARBUL-COUCH were two sessions available Lode Writer This past Saturday, the Swing Club hosted a swing dance workshop for students and the general public. The lessons were led

by Michigan Tech alumna Lian Tarhay and Matt Mella from Madison, WI. There

The best thing was it didn’t matter your level of expertise, the instructors were flexible, and worked at a pace everyone could follow. The

evening of swing was not over yet. Everyone was invited to the DHH ballroom from 8 to midnight to show off their new dance moves.

The atmosphere of the ballroom and the live music by the Backroom Boys got everyone in the mood for swing. Of course you could pick out the seasoned dancers among us, but it didn’t matter. Wearing uncomfort-

able shoes, getting your toes stepped on, and being called out if you were a wallflower all added up to an exciting evening. The Swing Club is just one of the many student organizations on campus that students can consider joining. Even if you have two left feet, the people make you feel welcomed, and try to help you become the best dancer you can be. Everyone

should consider swinging by the next workshop to polish up your dance moves, and look great the next time your out on the dance floor.

Director Nick Enz to Conduct Anticipated Spring Revels Concert A Musical Variety to Treat any Audience ABIGAIL DILLON Lode Writer

“The printed music only shows you so much,” Nick Enz, the Director of Bands at Michigan Technological University is very aware that music is more than the notes written on the page.

Performing the music, he says, means looking beyond the notes and interpreting what is being conveyed in the music, which is exactly what he intends for the upcoming Spring Revels Concert. With a portion of the soundtrack from the Original Star Wars Trilogy being performed by the Superior Wind Symphony, it was easy

for him to point out examples of how the music is played is just as important as what note is played when. Each piece has its own “note shape” that evokes certain emotions. For “The Battle in the Forest,” a piece from Return of the Jedi, the sound of the music was to be crisp, each note sharp like an explosion, the entire song rhythmically driven. In contrast “The Imperial March” has an ominous sense to it, lent by the drawn out notes.

In the process of bring-

ing this concert to stage, Enz seeks to balance the music choice between what the audience wants to hear, what the performers want to play, and what will challenge the group as both individuals and as a whole. In fact, rehearsal is part of the concert development in which Enz finds enjoyment.

There is a certain progression, he says, as the members grow and he sees what each person brings to the music, their own interpretive style. All of this helps to bring the music out of the page and into the air.

The Spring Revels Concert will contain two sections with an interlude between both.

The first part is the Campus Concert Band performing three pieces: Canto, Loch Lomond, and the Russian Sailors’ Dance from the ballet “Red

Poppy.” Following this is a percussion ensemble arrangement of Eric Whitacre’s “The Seal Lullaby.” This arrangement is a piece done by a Michigan Tech student, Ethan Grindel, as a completion of his music minor. The last section is the Superior Wind Symphony as they perform Danzón No. 2, The Star Wars Trilogy, and O Magnum Mysterium. It was much different than the romantic revolution I had envisioned the Occupy movement to be. We all love getting angry over surly police officers dragging away limp university students. But the reality is just a lot of cold, dirty nights in a tent.

The Occupy movement is certainly fascinating and not without a sense of humor.

The latest movement in the States is to occupy Bank of America lobbies. But instead of chanting or waving signs, protesters bring in furniture, potted plants, and board games. Then, quite civilly, they spend their days treat-

ing the lobby as their personal living room. The occupiers believe that because Bank of America takes homes away from people, they have the right to treat the slick, modern lobbies as the family den.

The occupiers I witnessed in Europe certainly marred my image of London as a clean, regal city. Their encampment was a stark contrast to the shiny boots of the Queen’s guards at Buckingham Palace and the intimidating, yet beautiful, walls of the Parliament building.

And I think this is exactly their point. Although many have complained about the occupiers being slovenly and scaring away tourists, what

would be the effect of their protests if they stood outside St. Paul’s in suits rather that dirty sweatshirts and jeans? What if they all had fresh haircuts, smothered in pomade? The very nature of their message compels them to be as unpolished as possible.

I have an inkling that if the protesters were cleancut and carried brochures instead of a bottle of booze, they might still remain on the steps of St. Paul’s. They also might be mistaken for Mormons.

It’s important to wonder, were the banished occupiers disruptive or just dirty?

Nation up in arms over Trayvon Martin shooting Taylor Domagalla Lode Writer Barely a month ago 17-year-old Trayvon Martin of Sanford, FL was walking to his father’s fiancée’s house from a convenience store.

Neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman thought Martin seemed suspicious and pursued him against the advice of a dispatcher. Martin was on the phone with a 16-year-old friend while he was being pursued. She had encouraged her friend to run from the man and listened to a scuffle before the line went dead. When police arrived on site to Zimmerman standing over Martin’s dead body still holding the hand gun used to kill the boy, they saw Zimmerman’s bloody nose and head wound, took Zimmerman’s statement of self-defense as unquestionable truth, and wrapped the case up with no arrests. They didn’t even run a background check before letting Zimmerman loose.

This case has exploded over the last month. Why? Trayvon Martin was a young black man. George Zimmerman was a half-white, half-Hispanic 28-year-old.

George Zimmerman claims to have defended himself against Martin, whom he chased down, a young man who had nothing but a bottle of iced tea and a pack of Skittles in his pockets. Zimmerman had been told not to pursue the boy and was carrying a hand gun, which he was not allowed to do as a neighborhood watch captain. While Zimmerman may have made a racist remark to the dispatcher before he chased down then shot and killed Martin, the really bothersome issue is that though Zimmerman clearly acted incorrectly, the police let him off the hook entirely.

ticle, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum criticized the president. Gingrich asked on a radio show “Is the president suggesting if it had been a white who had been shot, that would be OK because it wouldn’t look like him?” A little more tactfully, Santorum at a different radio interview stated “What the President of the United States should do is try to bring people together, not use these types of horrible and tragic individual cases to try to drive a wedge in America.”

Though there are indicators that the victim’s race played a part in this case, these responses to support are what disgust me most.

This backlash against the African American community’s cry for justice is maddening.

More important than the “scores of blacks shooting each other, shooting whites, shooting Koreans, Chinese, Vietnames, Latinos, etc.” is that this victim, this boy, was not a shooter. He was an innocent child and justice needs to be pursued, regardless of race. As far as this joke of an election goes, the tragic death of a child should not be used as a pawn. The president tried to bring people together by appealing to their empathy, because he understands why parents would want to pursue justice when their child has been murdered. The backlash against his support is when racism really comes into play in a reverse psychology sort of way. Anytime a 17-yearold is gunned down with only Skittles and tea to defend him, the country ought to get angry with the police department that botches an investigation.

Swimmers compete in Spring Intramural Meet JACOB SHULER Lode Writer The swimming pool at the Student Development Complex saw competition this past week as the Husky’s Intramural Swim Meet was held on March 20, 2012.

This event was held as a team event. Teams could enter up to two swimmers per event with each swimmer being able to compete in up to three events.

Swimmers competed in a total of eight events.

The events started with a women’s heat followed by the men’s heat.

They ranged from individual races like a 100 yard freestyle race to relays like a 200 yard medley relay.

A medley relay consists of four 50 yard segments.

The first segment is backstroke which is followed by breaststroke, butterfly and f r e e s t y l e .

S w i m m e r s reported for a 20-minute warmup before the meet began at 5:20pm.

At the end of the men’s meet, the Young and Restless team finished in the lead with 55

points. They were followed

by The Goldfish (32 points), the International Swim Team (25 points), The Jellyfish (10 points), and the Fighting Minnows (5 points).

The Women’s meet had one entry that scored points which was the Lady Jellyfish with 13 points.

The Young and Restless pulled together their points with three fifth place finishes

in the Medley Relay, the 100 yard Individual Medley, the 50 yard Butterfly, the 50 yard Breaststroke, and the 200 yard Freestyle Relay. All of the teams swam hard, and the event gave students a great chance to compete and work on their swimming.

The Intramural Swim Meet is held only once a year in the spring and allows students to get together in

a team or compete as an individual. T-Shirts were given out to first place finishers and a cup was given to second place finishers. The first five places are given points in the individual events and the first three score points in the relays.

The awards keep coming in for Husky basketball star, Ali Haidar. The junior has already been named GLIAC Player of the Year for his 2011-12 performance, but has also recently been names to the Basketball Times NCAA Division II AllAmerican Third Team.

The honors come for the Windsor, Ont. native after he led the Huskies to their first GLIAC North Division Title since the 2002-03 season.

Haidar averaged 19.1 points per game and ranked third in the conference for points.

He ended the season ranked third in the division in rebounds with an average of 9.0 per game.

Early in the season, Haidar eclipsed the 1,000 point mark after scoring a career-high 36 points while on the road at Saginaw Valley State. He set a new GLIAC tournament record for rebounds after netting 20 points and picking up 26 rebounds in the quarterfinals of the tournament against Ferris State.

Baker signs with Colorado Eagles JORDAN ERICKSON Sports Editor

After ending the season in the quarterfinals of the WCHA Final Five Tournament, Husky forward Jordan Baker has taken the next step in his hockey career by signing with the Colorado Eagles of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). The Eagles are affiliated with the NHL Winnipeg Jets and the AHL St. John’s IceCaps.

The Eagles are based in Loveland, Co. and signed Baker as well as three other amateur players for the Eagle’s last week of their regular season. Wearing number 14, not 22 as Husky fans are used to seeing, Baker has skated two games for his new team which include a 3-2 win over the Utah Grizzlies and a 1-6 loss to the same team.

In his career as a Husky, Baker amassed 82 points (38 goals, 42 assists) in his 146 games. In his final season for Black and Gold, the Chestermere, Alberta native finished third on the team in points with 28, just two behind leader Brett Olson.

Baker and the Eagles continue their season tonight as they take on the Ontario Reign at home.

Men’s Tennis takes on Tiffin and Findlay at home ELLIE FURMANSKI Lode Writer After losing their fourth consecutive GLIAC match last Friday, March 23, to Wayne State, the Michigan Tech men’s tennis team returns to Houghton to compete in two matches against Tiffin and Findlay this coming weekend Following Saturday’s match, the team will finish out their season on the road. The Huskies hope to pull through with their first GLIAC win of the season in this weekend’s double header.

Friday, March 23, the Huskies fell to the Warriors of Wayne State 8-1 in Detroit. The Warriors dominated in doubles, sweeping each of the three matches.

In singles, Anders Sandholm earned Tech’s lone point by defeating Wayne State’s Thomas Ducret by scores of 6-3 and 7-5.

The Huskies now stand with a record of 4-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

The Huskies will face off against two strong competitors

in the double header this coming weekend. Friday, March 30, the Huskies will take on Tiffin University. Tiffin holds a record of 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC. Looking at statistics, the Huskies are in for a challenge. This season alone, Tiffin’s lineup has won 54% of their singles matches and 64% of their doubles matches. To compare, the Huskies have won 36% of their total singles matches this season and 31% of their doubles. With less than a day to recover, the men’s tennis team will return to the court on Saturday, March 31. The Huskies will look to defeat the University of Findlay in their sixth conference match of the season. The Oilers of Findlay hold a record of 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC. Friday’s match against Tiffin is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., and Saturday’s match against Findlay is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Both matches will be held at the Gate’s Tennis Center. Come support the Michigan Tech men’s tennis team as they make their final home court appearance of the 2012 spring season.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Anders Sandholm

In the Husky’s fight against the Wayne State Warriors over the weekend, Anders Sandholm was the only Husky to come out victorious, giving Black and Gold their only win in a 1-8 loss to the Warriors.

Sandholm took a 6-3, 7-5 victory in the No. 1 singles and came close to taking the No.1 doubles fight with partner Doug Yossida, but they were

defeated in a 9-7 final.

In his final season as a Husky, Sandholm has taken over the No.1 singles spot for the first time in his career. Last season, the Duluth, MN native went 10-8 in No. 2 singles play and was named to the AllGLIAC Second Team as well as winning the Verdie Cox Award as the Husky’s MVP.
