Choosing the right career for you Gas prices on the Strategies and tips for future success rise again Will the price-hikes ever stop? REBEKAH PRICE Lode Writer

As the spring semester comes to a close, some of you may have come to realize that a job is out of your reach. It may be due to poor GPA, not finding the right opportunity, or just bad luck. This article should help give you some pointers on how to make you and your resume more attractive to potential employers. Firstly, do your homework. A good GPA is important when trying to land that internship. Granted, some of us are not as academically gifted as others, but it is imperative to have, at least, a basic understanding of what your professor is trying to teach. Some companies are very stringent in adhering to their academic corporate standards, but a lot of companies would be willing to bend the rules a bit if a candidate shows knowledge and interest in the process or company. Secondly, somehow get involved with your field and/or campus. There are many opportunities to join professional organizations, clubs, and other extracurricular positions available to students. Do not join more than you can handle, but being involved with some sort of extracurricular activity shows interest and an ability to work with different types of people. For engineering students, it is actually a very good idea to obtain some sort of position in an organization that requires communication and working with people. Companies love to see candidates who are very efficient at commu-

Getting the chance: There are many ways to find a job after college, but there are also ways to find jobs while you’re in college. For the majority of students at Michigan Tech, this means attending the Career Fair put together by the Career Services. However, students can also look for internships and co-ops through national chapters within their field, post their resume on career search sites (such as Monster, or CareerBuilder.com) while they work to improve their resume’s influence through school work, or participate in Enterprise program to show they can perform the tasks they’re applying for before even meeting their potential employers. nication and in leadership. Thirdly, be aggressive in the job search. The only way that a company can know that you can fill one of their positions is if you tell them that you are available. Many companies post job listings online and also may have hiring managers whom you can contact. Send them a strong cover letter (for tips, go to the Career

Center website www.career.mtu. edu) with your contact information. Do not be afraid to apply to too many positions, as the chances of hearing back increase when you do so. Once you have obtained that interview, it is time to start doing research on the company and its background. Companies love a candidate who has a base knowl-

edge of the company; the services rendered; and show a strong interest in that company. During interview, ask as many questions as you think you need to ask. Do not be afraid to ask for a better understanding of a certain process or ideology that is key to the continued on 2

As of Wednesday, the price of gasoline has reached $3.75 per gallon at the cheapest location in Houghton at the Wal-Mart pump station, with a city average of $3.80 per gallon, compared to a national average of about $3.70 per gallon. This reflects a sixmonth trend of increasing prices from $2.77 in Oct. 2010, with more pronounced rise between Feb. 22 and March 12t. The recent increase in prices is the result of rising global demand from a global economic recovery combined with social and economic turmoil in the Middle East raising concerns of future supply of oil. Current gas prices are at their highest since 2008, when the price peaked out at $4.12 cents per gallon nationwide before crashing to about $1.61 in the beginning of 2009. continued on page 2

Google attempts to enter social networking scene Web users feel that it may be “too little, too late” KIMBERLY GRIGG Lode Writer Google is taking it’s first steps into becoming a social networking website as well as a search website. Google has now developed the +1 button. This button resembles the like button on facebook quite a bit. This button allows Google users to “+ 1” certain web pages so they can share them with their friends and family. By doing this, it creates a more personalized search system. To use this feature though, you must have a Google account and a public Google profile. The information recorded by Google will be used both with Google and with the websites you +1. Google will use your profile picture and an annotation in its services, but Google may also use this information to help companies create ads containing this

annotation and picture. Google also plans to help companies by using the statistical information gathered from the +1 button to decide who their target audience is. Google has been receiving a lot of criticism for the +1 button. Many web users are saying Google will not make a lasting impression on the social networking scene. It is said that this step is not quite large enough to get users to use Google as a social networking website, but it will still remain as a search Engine. It is also said that Google needs to combine more of its resources with other popular networking websites, such as Twitter, to really be able to become a social networking website able to compete with facebook. Google is already a partner with Twitter, but they

Trying to be like others: Although Google has launched the “+1” feature as a means to help filter and improve the results web users receive when they use the corporate giant’s search engine, many feel that the application is an attempt to mimic the functions of social networking websites like Facebook.
