The ability to use computer programs and camera input to view the real world, then overlay a program interface to offer real-time help, tips, or even games would allow programmers to offer a huge array of tools to everyday users. Recently, with the spread of small and personalized computers (such as the iPhone or Android) programmers and program designers have begun to try out new ways of letting users interact with the world around them through their micro-sized

Some iPhone users may have already encountered the start of these AR applications. Le Bar Guide, the number one AR application downloaded, allows iPhone users to simply raise their phone’s camera to a bar, and then information on its location, national ratings, distance and what it is best known for are brought to their screen without them having to type a single entry into their phone. Which is great for when the screen is getting a bit blurry to look at in the first place.

Reddit holds college competition KIMBERLY GRIGG Lode Writer Where can you find lol cats, politics and the latest gaming news online? One of the best places for these topics would be a website called reddit. What’s even better is that Michigan Tech has their own subreddit, which is a special stream of reddit information for the Michigan Tech campus. Currently, a former intern from reddit posted a contest as a means to help grow the subreddit community, but

every student is needed to make sure Michigan Tech can win!

The contest is an attempt to see which college can obtain the highest percentage of new subscribers. The prizes for winning include Michigan Tech’s school colors used as reddit’s color scheme for a day (as well as Blizzard T. Husky in place of the reddit Alien logo), a large box of mascot designed alien stickers from reddit, a large poster customized for Michigan Tech, and a chance for college students to meet with the Reddit administration.

There are other competitions

taking place like total growth of the subreddit community and admin’s choice award. Each with their own prizes being offered to the winning school. To help with the contest, all you have to do is go to (www.reddit.com/r/ mtu) and make a free account with the reddit wesbite, and then subscribe to the MTU subreddit. The host of the event, Erik Martin (aka – hueypriest on Reddit) posted, “Promote your reddit page any way you please… make flyers around campus, send out facebook messages, hire/ borrow a blimp, and do what ever it takes, because we all know

everyone wants their mascot & school colors on the front page of reddit.” This is a chance for the Michigan Tech student community to come together and show yet another part of the world (or Internet) how awesome we are!

Where in the world is Gaddafi?

KIMBERLY GRIGG Lode Writer At the end of the last semester the Libyan rebels overthrew the Libyan government and an international manhunt was launched for the old autocratic ruler of the country. Because of the violence and rebellions against his government rule, Muammar Gaddafi has fled the country.

Gaddafi took power in 1969 when he organized a military take-over of the government.

Soon after, he made himself the leader of Libya. His reign ended recently with the 2011 Libyan Civil War and the creation of The National Transitional Council. Gaddafi was the longest ruling Arab leader of Libya.

When Gaddafi gained

power in 1969, he abolished the Libyan Constitution of 1951 and created his own laws based on his personal political beliefs. He called these laws the Third International Theory and published them in a book he called The Green Book. Gaddafi also created purification laws that prohibited homosexuality.

These laws made homosexuality punishable by five years in prison.

Under Gaddafi’s rule it was also illegal to commit adultery.

The punishment for this crime was flogging. Another law that followed made it illegal for women to talk to any man that was not related to her or her husband. A woman was also not allowed to interact with a potential husband until they were married.

Gaddafi’s laws also made the punishment for theft much

heftier. If caught, a thief ’s limbs may have been amputated as punishment. Gaddafi was known for hostility against the Jewish people and the United Nations (UN). He accused the UN of failing to prevent 65 different wars under his rule, and had taken measures to kick the Jewish people out of Libya.

Gaddafi waged many wars against different countries during his rule. At one point he had obtained chemical and nuclear weapons. However, six days after the capture of Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi denounced Tripoli’s (the capitol of Libya) weapons of mass destruction and allowed UN officers to verify that he would comply with UN laws.

At every home Husky football game, the Army cadets stand ready to support our boys on the field. They fire off the cannon with every point and then perform the number of pushups that we brandish on our scoreboard. For many years they fired a small replica cannon, but now they have upgraded to modern warfare, and their blank rounds are prepared to knock the socks off of our rivals.

There is just one thing left to do before the cannon rings victory for our Huskies on Sept. 10 against Lake Erie. The cannon needs a name; a name that evokes emotions of school spirit and patriotism on all Husky ears.

Believe it or not, there is something we can do to help Uncle Sam and Blizzard T. Husky. We can enter our submissions to name the cannon on our Facebook page MTU Army ROTC, and vote on the best name with our “Likes”.

The winner will be awarded the honor of firing off the first shot at the big home game on Sept. 10. Bring your friends and family to support our boys as they trounce Lake Erie.

Have you seen this leader: Gaddafi has fled from Libya after the Libyan riots rebels succeeded in overthrowing the self-proclaimed leader. Gadaffi has been ruling over Libya since 1969, and has been the longest ruling Arab leader of the country.

Gaddafi on the run listed Libya as a Pariah Country (a rogue country). This action brought about many sanctions within the UN from other countries against Gaddafi and the country of Libya.

Gaddafi also had a major part in the economics of Libya. Gaddafi and his family controlled all of Libya’s money and made it so they would be living in comfort for the entirety of Gaddafi’s rule. Most of Libya’s economy is based off of their abundant natural resources and oil. Over the many years of Gaddafi’s rule, he took money from the oil profits to fund both his and his family’s lavish lifestyle while putting little into the improvement of the country.

Much of Libya was living in poverty (especially the eastern part) until 2000. Between 2000 and 2010 Libya has experienced an estimated economic growth

of 10.6%. During this time many towns changed from mud-brick caravan homes to modern homes with electricity, plumbing and cable television.

The Eastern portion of Libya still remains in the same mudbrick caravan homes as before though.

The New York Times has reported that the loyalists to Gaddafi are done fighting.

The final town to ceasefire was Bani Walid. They surrendered on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The leader, Col. Muammar el-Quaddafi is presumed to have left Libya. Libyans once again feel comfortable in their own homes, but fear that elQuaddafi has escaped Libyan justice. There have been many conflicting statements about what is going on with the unpredictable Libyan rebel forces, but for now it seems as if things have quieted down

and that the Gaddafi loyalists have fled from Libya.

The real question now is where is Gaddafi? It is believed that Gaddafi either plans to flee to Niger, or has already fled. However, according to the BBC news, Gaddafi is not in Niger. Niger’s Foreign Minister, Mohamed Bozoum, has said that Gaddafi has not tried to cross the border, but many of his loyalists have. Bozoum further stated that Gaddafi loyalists in Niger are free to do as they please, but they were not sure if they would allow Gaddafi in if he tried to cross the border. Currently there are no plans if Gaddafi tries to cross the border. Bozoum does not know if Niger will allow Gaddafi to enter its territory, or if they will hand the former ruler over to the International Police.

ROTC hosts 9/11 memorial This Sunday -- Sept. 11 the Army and Air Force ROTC units will be hosting the 10th anniversary ceremony for the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

The ceremony will be held on Sept. 11, 2011 at the ROTC building on Michigan Tech’s campus. It will start at 8:45 a.m. and will include both Army and Air Force ROTC cadets as well

as local veteran organizations.

At 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the twin towers, Reveille will sound and the flag will be raised.

The flag was sent to us by a former cadet who played a role in getting the memorial to 9/11 placed at the flagpole in 2002. He flew the flag in honor of the 10th anniversary

over Afghanistan while he was deployed.

After a few words from a guest speaker there will be a Wreath Laying by the Cadet ROTC commanders and another guest speaker. This will be followed by the 21-rifle salute and Taps.

Future Tech Continued from front applications to help you through your day. Dish Pointer, the number four application downloaded, was designed for television satellite installers to allow them to point their phone towards the sky and quickly locate the nearest satellite in the skyline along with its exact coordinates. Very useful should you ever have to re-align your own satellite.

For gamers, there are even a

few apps where you can point your phone in any location you see fit and begin playing. The number nine most downloaded app for this is Firefighter 360.

No matter where you are there is a fire to be fought and passing civilians to be saved. Though this game is not at the height of AR gaming, it is a good start and will hopefully lead into more immersive and complex games.

Though the biggest, and most useful sense of AR programming was realized not by the iPhone or Android communities, but

by Pattie Maes’ lab at MIT by a dedicated programming named Pranav Mistry. Mistry is busy working on a small device that can be worn like a press pass (or possibly just clipped onto your shirt) that will allow you to interact with your surroundings in new ways. If you’re lost, display a map of the area on a wall and use your fingers to navigate a path for you to get your barrings back. If you’re on vacation, use a simple hand gesture to take a picture of what you’re seeing at the moment without having to pull out a camera or phone.

In fact, who needs a phone when you can dial your friend’s number on your hand and use a headset to talk to them. Mistry’s project is called the Sixth Sense, and will allow users to interact with their world in completely new ways. This application could also be useful for star-gazers to help them identify if any satellites are nearby that could possibly be seen. (Below) Mistry’s augmented reality device will allow for users to dial phone numbers, check their flight time on their ticket stubs, instantly take pictures with a hand motion, and many more features.

Governor Snyder creates the Office of Regulatory Reinvention SEPTEMBER 7, 2011 The Office of Regulatory Reinvention (ORR) announced today that it will form an Inspection & Permitting Advisory Rules Committee and is now accepting applications through Friday, September 30, 2011 from citizens wishing to serve on this committee. The Advisory Rules Committee will undertake a comprehensive review of the State’s inspection and permitting processes.

This effort is part of the ORR’s efforts to make the licensing and regulatory environment in Michigan more conducive to business growth and job creation. Executive Order 2011-5 contemplates that, as part of its effort to obtain input from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, the ORR will create certain Advisory Rules Committees.

“This Advisory Rules Committee will bring customers and regulators together to create a streamlined and predictable inspection and permitting process,” said Steven H. Hilfinger, Michigan’s Chief Regulatory Officer and director of the ORR. “A good economic development climate requires a regulatory process that is timely, understandable and fair, and not an impediment to projects that create jobs.”

The Advisory Rules Committee will function for 120 days after formation, unless that date is extended by the ORR. Upon the completion

of its work, each Advisory Rules Committee will issue a report to the ORR containing advisory recommendations.

The Advisory Rules Committee will also include an evaluation of applicable rules based off the factors listed in Executive Order 2011-5, including the health and safety benefits of the rules; the cost of compliance with the rules; whether the rules are duplicative or obsolete; and other factors. Ultimately, the ORR will submit its findings and recommendations to the Governor, based in part on the reports of each Advisory Rules Committee.

The ORR has already created six other advisory rules committees: Insurance & Finance, Environmental, Workplace Safety, Occupational Licensing, Liquor Control, and Natural Resources.

Other Advisory Rules Committees will also be formed in the future to address other areas of regulation, according to Hilfinger.

In addition to forming Advisory Rules Committees, the ORR is providing interested parties with the opportunity to share their perspectives on the regulatory environment by, among other things, inviting the submission of comments online and, when applicable, by providing for public comment as part

of any formal rulemaking process mandated by the Administrative Procedures Act. Governor Snyder created the ORR in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of Michigan’s government.

The primary goal of the ORR is to work with the various state departments to amend duplicative, obsolete, unnecessary or unduly restrictive rules. This will lead to a regulatory environment that is simple, fair, efficient, transparent and conducive to business growth and job creation.

Gov. Snyder has directed the ORR to review all existing rules and regulations. The ORR has

already identified nearly 19,000 formal rules and regulations, in addition to the thousands of informal guidelines and actions that will be reviewed by the ORR. To monitor the progress of the ORR, visit its dashboard at (www.michigan. gov/orr).

There will be approximately 10-15 members on the Advisory Rules Committee, as selected by the ORR. Committee members will come from a broad spectrum of stakeholders including members from the regulated communities, the relevant regulatory bodies and the general public.

Advisory Rules Committee, citizens are advised to send their resume (or equivalent) and short purpose statement to (ORR@michigan.gov). The purpose statement should include which committee the person seeks to serve on and a short explanation of why he or she would like to serve on that committee. These statements should be no longer than 250 words and are due by Friday, September 30, 2011.

All members will serve on a volunteer basis and are expected to attend regular meetings during the term of the Committee. The meeting schedule for the Committee will be announced at a later date.

Need a drink? Weight a minute!

• Nearly half of Americans drink a sugared beverage each day.

• Males consume more than females, with teenage boys leading the pack. On average, males ages 12 through 19 drink the equivalent of nearly two cans of soda each day, although the safe limit is said to be less than half a can.

• Healthy-eating recommendations call for people to limit sugary beverages to about 64 calories per day. That’s a little less than half of a 12-ounce can of regular Coca-Cola, which is 140 calories.

• An average can of sugared soda or juice has 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar. one soda a day,” regardless of whether it was a regular soda or a diet soda.

The American Beverage Association (ABA) responded by saying that the study fails to prove that there exists a conclusive link between soft drinks and increased risk of heart disease. The ABA added, “The assertions made could apply to any caloric product - if you over consume any food or beverage with calories, there are health consequences.” ABA also said that it is “scientifically implausible” that diet soft drinks, which have no calories, cause weight gain or elevated blood pressure.

If drinking soft-drinks is so controversial, then why do we consume them? This question prompted me to conduct my own research. Interviewing 50 students on the Michigan Tech campus, I attempted to gain insight on their beverage choices.

When quizzed about their drinking habits, students re-

sponded by saying soft-drinks have become an integral part of their daily diet. 30% of students, however, argued that they sweat out those ‘soft-drink’ calories through daily exercise or weekend outings. Approximately 35% said they have shifted to ‘diet’ versions of popular brands, owing to the lower calorie content. It is interesting to note that despite all the serious perils carbonated drinks may offer, many students were hesitant about reducing their consumption, let alone giving up softdrinks completely. Roughly 20% of students were shocked to hear the gravity of the problem and became determined to change the status-quo. Few students, around 15%, questioned the credibility of the reports, believing the findings must be seriously flawed as they did not report suffering from any of the negative symptoms the reports describe, despite a long history of soft-drink consumption.

Dragon Nest offers new experiences to MMORPG fans CAMERON SCHWACH News Editor Dragon Nest, an online MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) created by Nexon Games, entered open Beta over the summer on July 26. The MMORPG offers four primary player classes that each branch off into one of two subsets within that class. Players will be able to start off as the usual fantasy classifications of Warrior, Archer, Cleric or Sorceress, but then be able to further their character into a Swordsman or Mercenary, Sharpshooter or Acrobat, Paladin or Priest, or Elementalist or Mystic (respective to starting class) once they reach level 15 in the game.

The game offers many different ways to play to accommodate what gamers have become used to from other MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft (WoW), Rift or Age of Conan. The dungeons offer level settings ranging from easy to abyss, which allows for either one player to enjoy the game on their own, or for a group of friends to venture into a dungeon against hordes of enemies. Recently, player versus player (PvP) mode was opened so players can test their skills against their friends and attempt to rise up the player ranking ladder for both bragging rights and rewards. There are also many events held on a

monthly basis that allow players to receive free items in the game, or special dungeons that are available for a limited time to play.

The main reason to play Dragon Nest is for the chance to compete in the nest dungeons.

Although the other dungeons within the game are able to offer a challenge when pushed to higher difficulty settings, the nests are completely different.

It is highly advised that no-one solo a nest within the game, as even the easiest setting is harder than what most players have come to know about the dungeons. The only way through the nests is to gather a team of adventurers and to use teamwork to defeat long and challenging boss fights while also navigating level hazards and possible debuffs to your character.

However, you can also put the odds back in your favor by crafting items, weapons and armor to higher levels to help give you bonuses to your health, your mana, and your base stats.

The game allows for players to craft their equipment safely to level six, but after that there is a chance that all crafting will fail and you risk losing the item.

This turns higher level accessories into valuable items within the game as it means whoever crafted the item has beaten chance to make it. Though, if you wish to pay actual money to the micro-payment system

within the game, you can use special items to ensure that no ill-fortune will come to your item when crafting it to a higher level.

The last thing to know about this game is the system requirement information. The game can operate on the Windows XP Operating Systems or higher. The central processing unit (CPU) minimum is set to a Pentium 4 Dual Core processor. Although it can run on a minimum of 1GB of RAM, it is recommended to have at least 2GB or more available. A player will need at least 4GB of hard drive space, and a graphics card equivalent to the NVidia 7600 or higher. Finally, the DirectX 9.0 video card driver will be needed to operate the game properly.

After downloading the game, a player will need to log on to the Dragon Nest website and use the game launcher supplied on the front page to begin running the game. This is a measure Nexon has used with many of their games to ensure that bots, and fraudulent accounts, are not entering into the game.

Although no system is perfect for filtering these problems out, Nexon’s approach does keep many potential problems at bay.

“Just hang on a second, I’ll get a soft drink.” Well, next time think twice before you grab one.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently formulated national statistics on drinking habits of both adults and kids. Believed to be the first of its kind, the report released on Wednesday of last week rendered some staggering revelations. For instance, “One in 20 people drinks the equivalent of more than four cans of soda each day, even though health officials say sweetened beverages should be limited to less than half a can.” According to the report, half of Americans drink a soda or sugary beverage each day and some are downing much more. The study was based on personal interviews of more than 17,000 people, from the year 2005 through 2008. Subjects in the study were asked to recount everything they ate and drank the previous day; diet sodas, sweetened teas, flavored milks and 100 percent fruit juice were not counted.

CNN published a similar report in July 2007, titled Diet, sugary sodas alike, linked to heart disease factors. It said, “People who drink one or more soft drinks a day have a more than 50% higher risk of developing the heart disease precursor metabolic syndrome than people who drink less than

its money primarily through its retail stores, and especially through used game sales. The coupon affected Gamestop twice over; it was for a competing game distribution service, and the competing service was a digital distribution service.

With digital distribution, of course, comes no used games.

Rumors that Gamestop is planning its own digital distribution service adds even more to the suspicion.

Gamestop does have a bit of defense here: the existence of the coupons was not widely announced. Thus, they had no ability to do something like request coupon-free versions of the game. Square Enix, for their part, had announced that they supported Gamestop’s decision, for many of the same reasons. Gamestop also responded relatively reasonably when the memo was leaked.

Still, the fact that they initially did not announce what they were doing, and especially that they opened sealed packages, is questionable at best.

In the end, there are probably worst things Gamestop could have done. Still, their actions should give gamers pause before giving this company their business.

It’s no secret that the primary goal of any business is to make a profit. It’s also no secret that sometimes, making a profit means steering potential customers away from competitors’ products and services and towards a company’s own. Finally, it’s no secret that sometimes, in the process of doing that, businesses go too far. They do things that, if not illegal, are generally considered to be unethical.

This seems to be the case with the recent news about the video game retailer Gamestop removing coupons from games that it sells. A leaked memo, instructing Gamestop managers and employees to remove those coupons, has led to significant criticism against the company in the gaming press and blogosphere.

First, the facts, as reported by geek news site Ars Technica.

Square Enix, publisher of the video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution included in its retail versions of the game a coupon for a free online copy of the game, via the OnLive service.

Two weeks ago, a leaked memo from one of Gamestop’s Field Operation Managers instructed employees to open sealed copies of the game and remove the coupon before stocking the game on shelves. After the memo was leaked, the reaction led Gamestop to pull the game from shelves completely. When the backlash continued, the company caved somewhat, allowing those who had purchased the game with the coupon removed to bring in their receipt and an email from the company for a $50 refund. Notably, it seems not all stores were affected by the original decision to remove the coupons. Forgetting 9/11: A Personal Reflection TAYLOR DOMAGALLA Lode Writer This Sunday is 9/11, the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centers. It has already been ten years since the event and a lot has changed in the past decade. Immediately after the attack, it seemed like everyone was flying American flags and patriotism rose above all else. We ended up in two wars and before I knew what was happening my sister’s husband was deployed. Most of the country was enthusiastically supportive of the war effort. 9/11 was so recent, how could we not support the men and women who wanted to go get the bad guys? But the years passed and the support didn’t last. Every 9/11 there was a small ceremony in my hometown. Less and less people showed up with each year and the moments of silence in school became louder every anniversary. The yellow “We Will Never Forget” stickers were peeled off and thrown away.

Schools and churches stopped flooding the mail with letters and care packages to soldiers. The Stars and Stripes got packed up, waiting to come out only for 4th of July celebrations and if they were lucky, Memorial Day too.

The War on Terror is the longest war in American history.

The patriotic passion for fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq has greatly waned throughout the past decade. Suspicion of ulterior motives and open discussion of conspiracy theories has turned unquestioning and unwavering support to doubt and disapproval for the war effort. After a decade of fighting in a place where the major goals we started out with have now been met, it’s not a wonder that the support has died down.

Whether or not we support the war effort, we need to appreciate the soldiers who have fought and those who have died. Military men and women don’t get to choose which wars they fight for. They don’t get to decide to

fight for human rights or against genocide in one area of the world and to stay home when the Commander in Chief wants to look for weapons of mass destruction. They report to duty; they do their job, just like everybody else. Except their job isn’t like everybody else’s. They have to leave behind the country they love and are trying to protect it, for sometimes over a year at a time. They have to leave behind their loved ones, hoping that life won’t have changed too much by the time they get back. They also face the daunting possibility that they won’t come back. And as if all this weren’t enough sacrifice, they must put their families through all the stress and worry of their absence and the chance that the absence will be permanent.

Even if we choose not to observe 9/11, it still happened and its consequences are still real.

The day itself was horrible, but now the casualties from wars related to the attack outnumber the initial victim count. The war may

not be the biggest concern at news stations anymore, but soldiers are still being deployed, my sister’s husband went just over a month ago. It’s his fifth deployment since he’s been in the military, and his 4th since his daughter was born.

He’s missed years of her life; he even missed her birth.

Sometimes dates seem trivial.

Days go by, one at a time, but sometimes we need to read the number on the calendar, not just the items on today’s agenda, and remember why it’s important.

Nearly 3,000 people died on 9/11.

Over 4,000 have died since as a result. Millions of sacrifices have been made by military men and women and their friends and families. If the date still seems trivial, please look into the distressed face of my 7 year old niece. There’s a chance she won’t ever see the man she’s clinging to again. I hope that’s enough to make you want to at least say a prayer on Sunday for all those who have died and for all those who have put their lives at risk.

Our first question: “What do I do if the condom breaks during sex?”

Peach’s Perspective PEACHES Current Tech Student My first concern is your relationship with your partner. How well do you know him? Are you monogamous? The obvious concerns are STIs (formerly known as STDs) and pregnancy, but if you are familiar and preferably monogamous with your partner, then STIs are less of a concern.

For full consideration, we’ll assume the worst case scenario.

If you’re getting busy with a guy and the condom breaks, here are my recommendations: 1. Try not to panic. Stop immediately. Have him pull out.

2. Especially if STIs are a

concern, both of you should go wash your genitals. It won’t definitely prevent transmission, but it shouldn’t hurt either.

3. Go to a pharmacy and/ or doctor. You should be using some form of birth control in addition to condoms. If not, take the Plan B pill. It’s basically a super dose of birth control that is most effective within the 72 hours, so don’t delay.

4. If you’re concerned that you have gotten an STI from or given an STI to your partner, get tested as soon as possible. The transmission order is pretty irrelevant if it turns out you both have an infection. The important thing is to get tested and

treated.

5. Do your best to make sure you don’t ever have to live through this again. Check your condom stash. Make sure none are expired and that they’ve been stored in the right place— not in extreme heat or cold, not anywhere they’d get roughed up (pockets, wallets). If you aren’t confident in your ability to put on a condom, the KISS club does presentations. Also, make sure you are using water or silicone based lubricants, not oil based ones (Vaseline, baby oil).

Enjoy your sex life, but be careful or it could make the rest of your life not so much fun.

Cream’s Perspective CREAM Current Tech Student We have come a long way in the prophylactics department from the sheep intestine that used to be the norm. Condoms are used not only to help reduce the risk of pregnancy but also to protect from diseases, because of this I think they are incredibly important.

However even with today’s technology, condoms are still not a sure thing. They slip, they expire, and occasionally they break. If you find yourself in a situation where the condom breaks, the first thing I would recommend is to stop having sex immediately.

Now I understand that disengaging yourself from the

moment, whether you are a guy or a girl, is a pretty difficult task. Sex is something we are programmed to do and it’s not easy to stop once you start.

You need to stop having sexual contact in order to limit any unprotected contact.

Once you stop, you can find another condom and resume once you are sure things are safe again, or you can decide to stop all together. If this becomes a routine thing, try to figure out why the condom keeps breaking. Is it some sketchy off-brand? Do you need to use lubrication?

Once you fix the problem things should be easier. Now this is all fine if you realize that it has broken during sex. If you don’t realize it until after you are done that is another issue

altogether.

Now everyone is different, but guys, you know pretty darn well the instant when a condom breaks. Anyone that disagrees with me there must not have very active nerve endings. Any excuse that a guy didn’t notice a broken condom is most likely a lie. However, if ejaculation occurred then it is worthwhile to think about the morning after pill, or plan-B pill, regardless if the girl is on birth control or not.

If you had prolonged unprotected contact you might also want to take a visit to your doctor. Diseases spread quickly and your partner might not even know if they have one. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Women’s Soccer plays first two games of season JACQUELYN BURTON Lode Writer Michigan Tech soccer started the season with a 3-2 win against Bemidji State Saturday afternoon, and a 3-0 win over Minnesota Crookston last Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, in the first ten minutes of play, Amber Hynnek , was injured from roughing and was out for the rest of the game with a sprained left ankle.

Katie Boardman added two goals to the score sheet, with the first goal coming from a free kick from 22 yards away at 1:52, unassisted. Boardman would score again at 38:11 in the first half after skirting past Bemidji goaltenders right side, slamming the ball home for the Huskies.

With minutes to spare McKenzie Hengesh scored at 43:50 for the Huskies third goal after a pass from Boardman, landing the ball over the head of Bemidji goaltender.

At the end of the first half, the Huskies held a 3-0 lead over the Beavers playing a strong offense and equally hard defense.

Within the last seven minutes of the second half, the Bemidji ladies finally got their points on

the board, when they scored the two final goals for the game, making a final score of 3-2.

Tech’s Head Coach Michelle Jacob was pleased with the performance on the field.

“We came out strong and that helped with getting the starting goal. We were passing really well, and at the end of the day, we’re doing what we need to do in order to win the game.”

Sunday, despite the colder temperatures and rain, the Lady Huskies pulled through for their second win of the season.

In the 43rd minute of the game, Alyssa Hynnek scored with an assist from MacKenzie Jordon ,leaving the Huskies ahead at the half, despite the strong defense played by Crookston.

In the 51st minute, Lindsey Van Rooy scored with an assist from Katie Boardman and Ann Dahguist. McKenzie Hengesh scored the final goal in the 75th minute of the game.

Unfortunately, in the GLIAC opener on Wednesday, Sept. 7, the girls lost to Northern Michigan University with a score of 3-1.

“Northern put us under a lot of pressure in the first half and we weren’t able to move the ball quickly,” said head coach

Michelle Jacob. “We had much better opportunities in the second half but were not able to finish them.”

Friday, Sept.9 when they travel to Ohio Dominican for their first away game of the season.

On the last day of competition, the Huskies came out victorious in their first Saturday game by a 3-0 score, but would lose the second game of the day giving them a 2-3 overall tournament record.

Starting Friday, Sept. 9, the Huskies will begin a three day home streak when they host Ferris State, Saginaw Valley State,

and Grand Valley State consecutively.

Friday will see the start of the home series at 7 p.m. at the Student Development Complex against Ferris State. Ferris enters the weekend number one in the North Division Standing of the Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with a 4-0 overall record this season. In their first games of the season the Bulldogs won in scored of 3-0, 3-0, 3-1, and 3-1, giving a boost to the start of the year. This Friday will

be the first conference match up for the Bulldogs. In play against the Huskies last season, the Bulldogs won both of the meetings by scores of 3-1.

Saturday’s game will feature the Huskies against Saginaw Valley State at 4 p.m. The Cardinals are 1-3 for the season so far, with their win coming in a close 3-2 squeeze last weekend against Missouri S&T, at the University of Indianapolis Tournament. In play against the Huskies last season, the Cardinals went 2-0 over Black and Gold, with 3-1 wins each meeting.

The final home match of the weekend will be on Sunday, Sept.

11, when the Huskies host Grand Valley State Lakers. Grand Valley went 2-0 over the Huskies last season with 3-0 and 3-1 victories. The Lakers are currently ranks second in the North Division of the GLIAC, behind fellow visitor this weekend, Ferris State. The Lakers spent their first weekend of play in two separate Florida tournaments where they went 3-1 over the weekend, falling only to Rollins College, 3-1.

The Huskies enter their home opener with a 2-3 record, coming from last weekends tournament in Indiana.

Cross Country finds success at home meet JACOB SHULER Lode Writer Unlike last year, the 2011 cross country meet at Michigan Tech did not include a down pour of rain. It did, however, include the men’s and women’s teams both finishing first ahead of the competition.

Last week’s cross country meet at Michigan Tech served as the first test for the mens and womens teams.

The mens team took the top 16 positions to secure a perfect team score of 15 points.

Scoring 58 points, the second place team was Gogebic Community College followed by Northland with 71 points.

Tech Freshman Jani Lane won his first cross country meet with a time 16:38. The closest competition was Nathan Foster from Gogebic Community College with a

time of 18:12.4 finishing in 17th.

The Women’s team also won their meet with a score of 28, which was just enough to beat Northern Michigan University, who scored 29 points.

Finlandia and Northland both scored 93 and 102 points respectively.

Sophomore all-star, Deedra Irwin won the meet with a time of 19:49 while teammates Sarah Daniels and Marissa Yovetich finished third and fourth with times of 20:03 and 20:04. Northern finished closely tailing the Huskies, earning the second spot with Nora Kiilunen. Northern also took the fifth through seventh spots.

Huskies head coach Joe Haggenmiller was very pleased with the results of the race. He noted that the true test of the team will come later in the season when the Huskies face

some larger schools: “Once we get in bigger meets, it’s going to require getting bigger gaps on people.”

This Friday, the Huskies race at the Northland Invitational. Teams invited include Northland University and University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs.

The meet will provide better measure and competition for both teams. This week’s results were pleasing, but it’s still the beginning of the season and Michigan Tech has a lot of teams yet to face. The results of upcoming competitions will depend on the Huskies staying healthy and aggressive.

If this week is a sign of what’s to come, it will be an exciting season for the cross country teams.

Husky football successful in season opener JACOB SHULER Lode Writer

Last weekend the football Huskies traveled to Winona, Minnesota for their first contest of the 2011 season. The Huskies came out the victors by a score of 23-6 against the Winona Warriors. This win starts the Huskies off with a 1-0 record.

“It was a good all around win for us,” said head Coach Tom Kearly.

Any questions about whether tech could fill its quarterback position were partially answered on Saturday. While throwing 21 completions out of 28 throws, freshman Tyler Scarlett passed for 199 yards.

The Huskies created 328 yards of offense against the Warriors.

Scoring for the Huskies in the first half, Akeem Cason scored six after a 12 yard run in the first quarter, and would continue to run a total of 42 yards throughout the game.

Freshman kicker Garret Mead kicked a 24 yard field goal to make the score 10-0. At 7:36 in the second quarter, the Warriors got their first points on the board after a 19-yard run

by junior running back Theo Burkett. After a missing a field goal for the extra point, the Huskies would leave the first half with a 10-6 lead.

The second half featured more close plays by both contestants. The Huskies continued their point streak at 8:01 in the third quarter when Drew Vanderlin completed a tackle on Warrior quarterback John Tiegland to force a fumble on the Warrior 33-yard line helped push the Huskies to a 13-6 lead. Black and Gold would go on to score another touchdown after another Warrior fumble at 12:14 in the fourth quarter. Garret Mead would go on to score a 42 yard field goal to lock in the final score during the fourth quarter. This finished off the game making a three score gap between MTU and WSU. Husky defense was a major contributor to for the win, the defense forced 4 takeaways and 5 sacks, the Huskies gave the Warriors short possessions and maintained the momentum throughout the game.

lege Storm at home on Sherman Field.

Lake Erie won their first game against Gannon University last weekend, with a 13-10 score.

Lake Erie has a young football program and will be starting only their fifth season this year. For the 2011 season, the visiting Storm has 25 senior starters, providing depth and experience for their squad.

Athlete of the Week: Katie Boardman Boardman is the first ever Lode Athlete of the Week.

Boardman helped the soccer Huskies to two wins this past weekend when she scored two goals for a 3-0 win over Bemidji State and had one assist in the Huskies 3-0 win over Minnesota Crookston. Boardman is a sophomore on the Husky roster. In her freshman year Boardman played and started in 17 games for the Huskies and tallied two goals and one assist for a total of

five points at the end of the season. Boardman has already reached her cap last year, and it is only the second week of the season. The Fond du Lac, Wisc. native spends her free time playing cards and focusing on her psychology major at Tech.

New coach leads Husky women’s tennis into 2011 season opener JORDAN ERICKSON Sports Editor Women’s tennis starts off their season with a three-day home streak this weekend starting Sept. 9 against Ohio Dominican.

The Huskies roster features only one returning senior, Ploy Suthijindawong. Suthijindawong was named to last season’s All-GLIAC First Team and was also selected for the GLIAC Academic Excellence Award. In the 2010-11 season, Suthijindawong went 10-9 overall in singles and had a combined record of 11-8 in doubles.

Suthijindawong is joined on the tennis team this year by freshman sister, Kwang Suthijindawong.

Two returning juniors, Kira Eck and Chelsea Uganski round out the upperclassmen for the Husky tennis team.

Uganski, a Muskeagon Mich. native, returns to the court after leaving the 2010-11 season with a 3-2 overall singles record. Uganksi was Named a GLIAC Academic Excellence Award recipient, and was also the teams scholastic achievement award winner.

Eck, a 5’3 Colo. Native, played in 17 matches last season with a 1-2 record at No. 5 singles, a 4-10 record at No. 6 and a combined 6-5 record in doubles play.

Sophomores on this seaon’s roster include Dunja Imran Al-Sous, Audrey Hutton, and Natalia Lebedeva. Imran AlSous, a transfer from Reedley College in Reedley, Calf. where she helped her team to a Big 8 Conference title last season.

Hutton returns to the Huskies roster after playing in one match her freshman year, in which she and doubles partner Ploy Suthijindawong won 8-2 against West Virgina Wes-

leyan.

Lebedeva, a native of Nakhodka, Russia, returns for the 2011 season after earning AllGLIAC Second Team honors her freshman year. Lebedeva posted a record of 13-4 in singles matches and 11-6 overall in doubles.

The Huskies start off their season with three home matches in a row, before traveling to the ITA Midwest Regional Sept.16-18. The Huskies have six away matches before returning home October 7, when they host Saginaw Valley State, and October 8, when they take on Northwood.

After two more away matches the final home matches of the season will be Feb. 18 against Lewis.

The Husky tennis program is going into the 2011 season lead by new coach Kevin Kalinec.
