Air travel was also greatly affected. As a small operation, the Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX) offers two daily arrivals (afternoon and night) and two daily departures (early morning and afternoon). Operating under United Airlines, travelers are welcomed to a small “puddle jumper” plane. The time in the air from Hancock to Chicago is approximately 90 minutes. Sounds pretty simple, right? Especially compared to larger airports such as Dallas, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, the Copper Country’s tiny airport seems so insignificant. How can there be trouble when there is only one terminal with two flights out each day? Two words: inclement weather. For many Americans, with large cities nearby, traveling by airplane is no big deal. For those of us in the Upper Peninsula with unpredictable and sometimes extreme weather conditions, making our way out of the Keweenaw by air and back safely and on time is a hit or miss experience.
