n Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 the streets were filled with glorious snow, for the second annual Jibba Jabba Rail Jam hosted by Rhythm skateshop in downtown Houghton. The event was held on Huron Street, snow piled high from the plows blocking off the section of street next to the skateshop. Hot dogs from local vendors and chilli, soup, hot cocoa, and Monster energy drinks provided by the Library Bar and Grill

warmed the crowd and rejuvenated the competitors. Over one hundred competitors took their turn on the hill, more than doubling the turnout from the last year. Competitors came from around the U.P. including members of the snowboarding community from Marquette who put on a show, with Rob Michel of Northern Michigan University winning first-place in the advanced category. The warm, sunny weather may have helped the community gathering. T-shirts and bandanas went to all participants, part of the $10 entrance fee, while cash prizes and merchandise

went to the top three winners in each category: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Skiing. The competition was an impressive collaboration between the youthful culture of snowboarding, the city of Houghton, and local business. With events like these, the progression of the snowboarding culture in Houghton and Keweenaw counties continues to advance. Last winter, the mild temperatures and sizable snow pack attracted notice from nationally renowned Forum snowboarding team. his Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 U.S. Congressman, Bart Stupak will speak on Pro-Life issues for the Friday Night Fireside Fellowship at St. Albert the Great University Parish starting at 7:00 p.m. Congressman Stupak has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing Michigan’s First Congressional District. Congressman Stupak says, “By working with my Pro-Life colleagues and with Speaker Pelosi, I was able to secure an up or down vote on my amendment with regards to federal funding of abortion. My amendment does one very simple thing: It applies current law (the Hyde Amendment), which bars federal funding for abortion except in the case of rape, incest or life of the mother, to the health care reform bill. The Hyde Amendment has been the law of the land on federal funding of abortion since 1977 and applies to all other federally-funded health care programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, the VA and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP). My amendment is not new federal abortion policy but continues current law. My amendment has no impact on those individuals with private insurance who do not receive affordability credits

and in no way prohibits any individual from purchasing a supplemental abortion coverage policy. Health insurance companies can still offer policies that cover abortion; insurance companies just can’t sell those policies to individuals using affordability credits to pay for the policy. My amendment was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 240 to 194 on November 7, 2009 and was included in H.R. 3962. Without the votes of 41 Democratic ProLife supporters of my amendment, health care reform never would have passed the U.S. House of Representatives.” Go to http://www.house.gov/ stupak/issues_healthcare_update.shtml for more details about Congressman Stupak views. Congressman Stupak‘s amendment is not being accepted by all. Planned Parenthood, creators of the world’s largest abortion and women’s health clinic states, “ the amendment violates the underlying principle of health care reform.” There argument is that the amendment “prohibits any coverage of abortion in the public option and prohibits anyone receiving a federal subsidy from purchasing a health insurance plan that includes abortion. It also prohibits private health insurance plans from offering through the exchange a plan that includes abortion coverage to both subsidized and unsubsidized individuals.” For more information about Planned Parenthood perspective go to http://www. plannedparenthoodaction.
