2014 Ball Drop kicks off season EVAN MAYER Lode Writer The return of students to Houghton has left store shelves that ordinarily display duck tape and brooms across the area bare.

What are no longer bare though are the three sheets of ice next to the Rozsa Center on Michigan Technological University’s campus as broomball, one of Tech’s greatest traditions, has finally returned.

In the early 1990’s the Inter Residential Hall Council (IHRC) brought broomball to Michigan Tech and since its arrival the winter sport has spread like fire through the student population. This season 240 teams in six competitive conferences and one noncompetitive conference, which is a new addition this year, will test their legs on ice.

The season began last Tuesday night with the grandeur of the annual Ball Drop game. The local celebrities that were present were Tech’s mascot, Blizzard T. Husky, and Les Cook, the Vice President of Student Affairs. The always-boisterous Pep Band even made an appearance to add a little music to the air.

With the season now underway the 1,000 students on teams, as well as the referees, rink staff employees and the workers who hand out free hot chocolate at the cocoa shack, will have their hands full until the championship game in a little over a month’s time. Along with the championship game, broomball fanatics should also add the February 5th AllStar game to their docket for the night of Winter Carnival’s all-nighter an event that every year is a hit with the fans.

IHRC Broomball Committee Chair Cody Gustafson had this to say about why broomball is such a sensation at Tech. “Broomball gives students a way to stay active and be involved in the middle of winter, it breeds camaraderie, and ultimately brings people together. I would encourage everyone to give broomball a shot, it’s really becoming a part of the complete Tech experience.”

Luke Schulz, a first-year student, is giving Broomball a shot, as he said he did not want to miss the opportunity to partake in the tradition. Schulz, who will be suiting up for the team Fair Warning, had never actually seen a broomball game before the Ball Drop game on Tuesday but had heard from others how big of a deal the sport is at Tech.

MTU homepage redefines appearance and purpose

So far, the response to the new Michigan Tech homepage, which was redesigned to link to other places rather than be a destination, has been overwhelmingly positive.

According to Brandy Tichonoff, Director of New Media and Creative Strategy, the homepage has not been redesigned since August 2009. In the past, the homepage was designed as a destination spot for users, however, the new homepage now serves as links to get people to where they want to go.

“In the past four years, web technologies have advanced, our team’s capabilities have expanded and our analytics have shown us that our users’ behavior has changed. The homepage use to be a destination, now new users and returning users really want to get to where they are going. Now it is more like LAX, people grab a bite to eat and a connecting flight,” Tichonoff said.

Planning of the new homepage began in May 2013 and consisted of a long process of testing prototypes.

“After evaluating the data, we designed and developed a prototype. The prototype went through a series of approval

processes with administration staff and other campus leaders. We put the new, streamlined design through in-depth user testing with all audience groups.

Adjustments were made to the prototype based on the user testing results and a final prototype was launched,” web developer, Scott Shannon said.

The UMC Web Team took into consideration traffic patterns and strategic plan when developing the new homepage.

One of the biggest changes made to the new homepage was the navigation.

“There were a lot of changes, but the biggest is updated navigation. The previous design had approximately 145 links at the top level of the page. We found that only 40-50 of those links were used with any real consistency. Some links on the new design, have to be there due to policies or for legal reasons. All of the others are based on traffic and a reflection of the strategic plan,” Tichonoff said.

In addition to changing the way that users can navigate from the homepage, the Web Team also made changes to the length of the homepage based on information that they had gathered.

“Web Junkies” In a world where the Internet connects everything we do, some have become obsessed with being online. Your phone is attached to your hand, with Facebook, Twitter, online videos and music streaming wildly.

The documentary “Web Junkies”, which was screened at the Sundance Film Festival, follows three young adults in a Beijing treatment center on their three-month journey to curb or cure their addiction to being online.

China is the first country to categorize internet addiction as a clinical disease.

Internet Addiction Disorder or IAD, can cause neurological complications, psychological disturbances and social problems.

In 2012, a study was published in the US National Institutes of Health National Library of Medicine entitled “Internet Addiction: A Brief Summary of Research and Practice”. The study nodded towards the prevalence of IAD, stating that in the US and Europe, between 1.5 percent and 8.2 percent of the population may be addicted to the internet.

“Web Junkies”, whose byline is “How do you reprogram a teenager?”, also exposes the harsh reality of why teens feel more connected to cyberspace than their own families. Upon first looking at stills from the filming, the treatment centers seems most similar to a bootcamp, but the pressure isn’t on your body, its on your mind and mental status with the internet in play.

E-waste recycling has made its way to a permanent location in the Upper Peninsula. The local non-profit business UP Green Recycling started collecting e-waste in March of 2012. The business is run out of Baraga by Chimene Puska, her husband Charlie, and seven other volunteers who wish to keep e-waste out of the landfills.

“Right now, most of the county only has a drive for recycling once a year, but doesn’t have permanent recycling for e-waste. We want to keep computers and other electronics out of the landfills to be repurposed,” Puska said.

The local business collects anything from chargers and small kitchen appliances to cameras and computers.

“Our saying is that we take anything that has a cord in it,” Puska said.

Any organization, church, business, etc. is able to start an e-waste drive and have the electronics picked up free of charge.

Although Puska said that pick-ups dates depend on the number of calls that they receive, they take place weekly towards the end of each week.

Once the e-waste is collected, UP Green Recycling stores the items for further use.

“We remanufacture and store the electronics that we receive until we find a buyer. However, the plastic and glass that we receive are stored to be crushed so that they can be repurposed into different products, granules or landscaping,” Puska said.

Puska is looking for local groups or organizations at Michigan Tech to run e-waste drives.

“In the past, a few environmental clubs at Michigan Tech have completed e-waste drives, however, no one is currently doing so,” Puska said.

Although UP Green Recycling is located in Baraga, Puska said that they are looking for locations to have local drop-offs.

Student Org Spotlight: Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society EVAN MAYER Lode Writer Being in the vast forested expanses of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan gives Michigan Tech students an intimate experience with nature that schools in more metropolitan areas never get to experience.

An organization that takes full advantage of Tech’s location is the Michigan Tech Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society. The Wildlife Society is a national organization of not just students across the country, but also professionals.

These professionals mostly work in the fields of wildlife ecology and biology, as well as some individuals who work in wildlife research. Being a member of an organization that brings students and professionals in contact like this gives students a rare opportunity to get to know professionals in their desired fields.

An opportune time for members of this

organization to expand their networks in their desired fields is at the national convention, which members are invited to attend annually. The convention this past fall semester was held in October in Milwaukee, Wisc. Next school year, Tech’s branch of the society will not be so close to home as they will be traveling to Pittsburgh, Penn., again in October, in order to participate in the convention.

While there, they will be looking to better their third place finish in last year’s wildlife based quiz bowl.

There is a whole lot more to this organization though than just attending the convention. According to President Anna Buckardt, the organization is not just for those individuals where wildlife is their professional focus. Anyone can get experience the hands-on opportunities that members obtain.

Through volunteer efforts and trips the Wildlife Society has had the opportunity to do a wide variety of activities. A few Continued on page 5

In the meantime, the project has plans to continue progressing forward.

“Interior construction to the Peninsula Room is estimated to begin on March 10 with exterior construction beginning on May 5, 2014. We are currently in the initial design phase of the project,” Carter said.

According to Carter, plans to start remodeling and construction of the $998,000 project have been made possible by donors, especially the John Edgar McAllister Trust.

“All renovations are estimated to be substantially completed in early August with a dedication to be held over Homecoming Weekend in the fall when members of the McAllister Foundation are on campus,” Carter said.

Once complete, the planning committee has high hopes for the Welcome Center.

“The Welcome Center will convey the energy and excitement of the Michigan Tech experience to prospective students, parents, and campus visitors in a warm and inviting atmosphere,” Carter said.

“I am optimistic that this put the MUB In a new spotlight. The first thing prospective students will see is a brand new welcome center, the second thing will be the MUB commons and surrounding areas. I am personally very optimistic that this will drive more improvements to the MUB. I’m excited to see what grows out of this opportunity,” Shull said.

UP snowmobile season down due to Midwest snow KATELYN WAARA News Editor The smell of gasoline fills your nostrils as you rev the engine and glide across the snow. You specifically made the trip to the Copper Country to take advantage of this.

The trail is in good riding condition, the snow is falling and you’re smiling as big as a kid on Christmas morning.

Snowmobile season has arrived.

For many residents of the UP, snowmobiling is a hobby and passion.

With the abundance of snow that the area receives on a yearly basis, looking for a place to bring out your sled is a no-brainer; head to the Keweenaw.

This year, however, the number of snowmobilers in the area is not as high as in past years, mainly because of the amounts of snow in other areas of the Midwest.

According to a press release from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) office at the Houghton County Memorial Airport, December had above normal snowfall and precipitation. December 2013 was the

eighth highest snowfall on record.

At this time last year, the Copper Country was experiencing Lake Effect snow warnings and advisories. Because the snow got a late start last year, by the end of January 2013, the Keweenaw had achieved 137 inches on the ground. The 2013 season total was 314 inches. This year, the area has already received 179 inches, up 42 inches from January 2013.

That’s a lot of snow, right? Aren’t conditions perfect for avid snowmobilers?

Well, because of the cold temperatures the nation has been experiencing and the amount of snow in other areas of the Midwest, the U.P. is seeing less of the recreation junkies than is typical for this time of year.

Sue Bushong, owner of Copper Country Rentals in Calumet, said her business is experiencing a snowmobile lull, just as many other businesses are.

“People just aren’t coming this far,” said Bushong. “We’re experiencing it like everyone else.” Bushong also said that times surrounding the holidays are usually slow, but with the long weekend we had with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, she hoped it would pick up.

Copper Country Rentals also features the Trailside Motel, located, like many others in the area, right off of one of the trails. This ensures snowmobilers have a place to stay in close proximity to their activity.

Jack Poynter, owner of Dan’s Recreation in South Range, said, “All in all, December was up a little bit, but last year wasn’t anything to compare to.” For Dan’s, late January is looking better, but March is looking to be the best month to ride.

Poynter said his business hasn’t seen a good March since the 2005-2006 snowmobile season. The economy is another reason many people may not make the trip here. Unfortunately, none of these factors are controllable, so all we can do is wait.

“I’m watching the weather,” Poynter said.

According to an International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA) press release, distributed in June of 2013, it was found that the number of registered snowmobiles in North America increased to approximately 2 million from last year.

The release also showed a 20 percent increase in miles ridden on snowmobiles

during the 2012-2013 season as a result of improved and expanded trail systems.

The Keweenaw and Western Upper Peninsula’s nearly 3000 miles of trail system run across 11 Western U.P. counties, including Keweenaw, Houghton, Baraga, Ontonagon, Gogebic, Iron and Marquette.

Some trails even bring you close to Lake Superior, which not only provides the majority of the snow, but also beautiful, icy views. Be careful getting to close to the edges though, as some may not yet be sturdy enough to hold you above the waves.

Jared Telford, a fourth-year student studying Electrical Engineer, posted this Facebook status on Jan. 15: “Hey everybody, I just snowmobiled to my snowboarding class. My life at MTU is complete.”

According to Telford’s Facebook post, conditions couldn’t be better for those looking to get out on their sleds. What an experience it is to rush down a trail over freshly-fallen snow, the wind in your face and adrenaline in your veins. Whether out-of-towners think so or not, the U.P. is ready for them.

So if you are the next Steve Irwin, have a passion for wildlife or maybe just want to learn how to track animals, the Wildlife Society at Tech may be just the right fit for you.

The majority of the students that participate in the Wildlife Society are majoring in biology or in the forestry department, but students of all majors and especially all ages are encouraged to join the club. The only true requirements for

joining the group are to have an interest in wildlife and a curiosity to learn more about them.

If a dream is to join the ranks of the current 25 active members, the process is relatively simple, either look for the organization on the Michigan Tech involvement link or attend one of the meetings. The first meeting of the semester will be held Wednesday, Jan. 22

Lev’itt up with hitRECord JAMES WOOD Lode Writer In the midst of copyright issues and large companies stamping out the aspiring filmmaker/YouTuber, one company stands strong against the mainstream. HitRECord is a company founded by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper, etc.) which seeks to create collaborative art, from stories and songs to short films and animations, simply for the sake of creating.

HitRECord recently started airing a variety show on Pivot, a new cable channel, but the collaborations and art pieces can all be viewed from the hitRECord website.

YouTube is also a great source for the most popular pieces. However, the material is worthwhile regardless of the source.

The short films range from tear-jerking and heartfelt to uniquely entertaining.

There are so many different collaborations

that it’s hard to recommend anything without potentially leaving out something better, but “Morgan M. Morgansen’s date with Destiny,” “Mademoiselle Noir: A Tragedy” and “And a New Earth” are a few standouts.

HitRECord’s liberal stance on production is best represented when on the first episode of the HitRECord T.V. show, an announcement reminds the audience “to please turn on all recording devices.”

Worldly guitarist Goran Ivanovic to play at Orpheum Theater RAND SILVERS Lode Writer Guitar lovers and those who have nothing to do Saturday night, rejoice! The Goran Ivanovic Trio, which plays Classical, Jazz and modern guitar music, is coming to the Orpheum Theater on Saturday, Jan. 25th for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for students

Goran Ivanovic hails from Croatia, and moved to the United States after his family was granted political asylum during the civil strife that engulfed the region. Since arriving in the United States, he has released seven albums, his latest, “Blackmail,” winning Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s “Best Album of 2013” award.

He has also played at a number of major festivals, most recently including the Global

Strings Fest in Mannheim, Germany, the Calcutta International Guitar Festival in India, the Canadian Guitar Festival and the World Music Fest Chicago.

Searching “Goran Ivanovic” on YouTube offers a sampling of this artist’s incredible talent. Part of his music’s impact comes from its sheer technical complexity.

Classical guitar music is usually impressive in this regard, and Goran’s execution is flawless.

At least as impressive however is how Goran’s multicultural background shows through in his music. The melodies are beautiful, and show clear influence of his Balkan heritage as well as Classical and Latin guitar traditions. These seemingly incongruous elements combine to create a unique and enjoyable sound.

Brooms with cut handles and covered in your favorite color, the bristles molded to the perfect, strategic shape.

Students gather along the edges of the rink. Cheers rise out of the frosty air when someone scores a goal.

On the occasional sunny day, players wear lighter clothing to fend off the sweat. With the sun shining on the ice, some may even draw black beneath their eyes. Could it be coal?

Refs in striped helmets and jackets get to the face off dot, center ice and center stage. They blow their loud whistles when a penalty is seen, a stoppage in play.

What’s more exciting is when the first half is played, the second is almost over. The game is close, a powerful display.

Looking to the clock, there’s only a few minutes left. Your team takes a timeout to huddle and discuss your plans for the next move. Your fans cheer and opposing fans jeer, as you contemplate the end of the game.

Your captain pumps you up. You all know the drill. Get someone to the front of the net, look to get it to the goal. Pass, pass, pass. Someone slips and falls. Is this the end of the line? You hear your name.

“Go, go, go!! SHOOT!” You hear called from behind you. The ball is on your stick. Crouching down onto your knees for more power, you make contact with the ball at the prime moment. With three seconds left, your shot is airborne.

Over the shoulder of the goalie, flopping like a fish, you hear the sound of the hard blue ball meet the icy wood. The goal is counted, and you’ve succeeded! Championship medals on your necks, they do adorn.

Broomball season is here. Who’s as excited as me? For those of us who are playing, good luck to all of thee.

For those of you who are not playing, I hope its not your last semester here. Broomball is a Michigan Tech tradition, so do more than just cheer.

It features Lena Dunham, most well known for her role in the HBO series Girls; many are skeptical as to whether or not the cover is actually Lena Dunham.

One of the angriest was the feminist blog, Jezebel, who soon offered $10,000 for the original photographs prior to their Photoshop manipulation, which had apparently consisted of the removal of smile lines, a sharpened jaw line, smoothed hands and narrowed hips and thighs, among other extensive edits.

To be honest, if I were to vote on this issue I’d lean towards yes, too. The economic incentives to my state and hopes for reduced drug violence would lead me to it, but then one thing would really give me pause: a friend from home.

We became friends in junior high and she’d already been smoking weed and popping pills for years. Somehow or another she pulled herself out of it for a few years until she started dating someone who smoked, then began again. She hasn’t stopped since and many of her problems have escalated over the years.

One of her roommates stole the rent to buy drugs to flip during college. In her most recent story she said she needed a high so bad she went to the South Side of Chicago to buy pot then had her car shot up in a deal gone awry. She ditched the guy who brought her there, but not the drugs.

I’ve noted that if marijuana were commercially available in Illinois her roommate may never have stolen her rent

and her car may never have been shot, but I don’t think that gets to the root of her problems. She doesn’t use pot in a healthy recreational way; she uses it to run from her problems. Rather than working through them or moving away from them after college, she moved back home to the heart of her issues to live through day in and day out.

When I told her the drugs weren’t going to change anything she agreed but said they made life tolerable.

Whether she is buying them from a licensed store or on a dim street corner she is buying them to support her addiction, which is bred of trying to escape her worst problems.

When I think about trying to capitalize on my friend’s misery and need to escape from it, I feel ashamed and I would feel ashamed if I lived in a state that sought to do just that.

In many ways I fear that Colorado, Washington and any state that follows in their footsteps is doing what my friend does—falls back on drugs when life’s problems get too hard. For my friend, it’s about getting away from her family and relationship issues. For the states, it’s about bringing in high tax revenues, not bothering with the effort or cost of arresting, charging or incarcerating marijuana users as criminals and appeasing those who want to use the drug. I would much rather see the states of this country put legislative effort towards fixing their underlying economic and social problems than falling back on drug use to make living more tolerable.

ELLIE FURMANSKI Sports Editor Junior Nordic skier Alice Flanders was one of Michigan Tech’s top skiers this past weekend at the Telemark Chase JOQ in Cable, Wisc. The Crystal, Minn., native skied to a first place finish out of 101 competitors in the women’s 10-kilometer freestyle race on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Flanders completed the course in 30:19.8 and finished with about a 16 second lead ahead of the second place finisher. She blew away the competition with a great race and pulled off the best finish yet this season amongst the Husky skiers.

Flanders’ first place finish no doubt helped the women’s team earn a second place finish out of nine collegiate teams

after Saturday’s freestyle race. Beating NMU, who placed third, was a noteworthy accomplishment.

Sunday, Jan. 19, Flanders and the rest of the Huskies competed in the day two events of the Telemark Chase. Once again, Flanders came through with one of the Huskies’ top finishes of the day in the women’s five-kilometer classic race.

She finished second for the Huskies and 15th overall out of 163 skiers, completing the course in 17:25.7. Flanders was just over 17 seconds behind teammate Deedra Irwin and 58 seconds behind the first place finisher.

Flanders’ performance both in the freestyle and classic races largely contributed to the women’s overall third place finish and the men’s and women’s combined team third place finish.

The last time these two teams met, Tech dropped two close games while in Big Rapids, Mich., in a 1-0 shutout on Friday night, Jan. 10 and a 3-2 loss the following evening.

Although gaining zero out of four possible WCHA ranking points, there were a number of positives which came out of the series for the Huskies.

Jamie Phillips brought his A-game to the crease, helping his team immensely on Friday evening by stopping 28 of 29 shots. Phillips earned the game’s third star of the night behind Ferris’ goal scorer and goaltender.

A lone-goal win is always frustrating for the team on the short end of the game, but

credit must be given to Phillips and the Huskies in front of him for blanking the Bulldogs for over two and a half periods.

Not only is Ferris State ranked number one in the WCHA, but they are ranked number two in USCHO’s Division I Men’s Poll.

Michigan Tech is ranked in the bottom half of the WCHA, and non-existent in the USCHO Poll, so keeping the game so close is a big step in the right direction for the Huskies.

Goaltender CJ Motte was undoubtedly the biggest problem for Tech while facing Ferris State. The 6’-0”, 190-pound junior from St. Clair, Mich., stopped all 25 shots fired from the Huskies in the teams’ first meeting and then an incredible 44 saves from 46 shots in the second game.

If the Huskies want the win this weekend against one of the toughest college hockey teams in America, they’ll have to maintain a solid defense and be more clever while handling the puck around the net. This is easier said than done, as goal scoring has proven to be difficult against Motte.

While Tech stayed home and played some friendly puck in Houghton last weekend, the Bulldogs traveled to Mankato, Minn., to take on the number two WCHA-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks.

Hoping to keep their momentum rolling along from the sweep against Tech, the Bulldogs dropped both games in an upsetting loss of 6-2 in Friday’s game and a close-but-no-cigar loss of 4-3 the following night. Friday was FSU’s first in-conference loss, and this was the first time all season the Bulldogs have lost two consecutive games.

FSU remains number one in the WCHA. MSU trails behind Ferris State by only two points but with two more games played than the Bulldogs.

Like always, puck-drop for this upcoming series will be at 7:07 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Currently ranked seventh in the WCHA, Tech has the opportunity to jump into fifth if they take the series.

Sidelines Bigfoot Snowshoe event

The Nordic Ski Club gives students opportunities to participate in this fitting winter sport.

Upcoming opportunities and events with Nordic Ski Club ELLIE FURMANSKI Sports Editor With an abundance of snow and a vast expanse of trails, it’s no wonder that cross country skiing is such a popular competitive sport and leisure activity up here in the Keweenaw and in the Midwest alike.

For students at Tech, the Nordic Ski Club provides students the opportunity to continue in this winter tradition, whether you’re a beginner or long time, seasoned skier.

The cost for students to join Nordic Club is only $10 per academic year. All members receive free equipment use at the Tech Trails, which includes both skate and classic style cross country skis, boots and poles, as well as snowshoes.

For those with their own skis, storage area is provided in addition to space and equipment for waxing. Free access to the Tech Trails is provided by means of

the Experience Tech Fee. Members also receive discounted passes for other local trail systems.

The club, its equipment and wax room are stationed on the community end of the waxing shed, which is located at the trailhead of the Tech Trails. Members can take advantage of all the Nordic club has to offer seven days a week with the wax room open every day from noon until 8 p.m., except Mondays and Wednesdays when it opens at 1:30 and 12:30, respectively.

Nordic Ski Club caters to skiers of all skill levels, from beginners to those more advanced. Beginner lessons, club team training and multiple trips to other trails systems and competitions are just some of the opportunities the club provides.

Lessons for beginner skiers are offered to members four days a week. For more experienced skiers looking to train with others, there is also a club team. The club team is currently in its third year.

“The opportunity for people to race for the club team is more of a possibility for next year,” noted Helena Keller, Nordic Ski Club President and Race Coordinator, as kinks in the system are being worked out this season.

If you’re interested in snowshoeing and looking for some wintery fun over Winter Carnival weekend, register today for the seventeenth annual Bigfoot Snowshoe event. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8 starting at 8 a.m. at the waxing shed near the Tech Trails trailhead. A student ID gets you snowshoe rentals and access to the trails for the day. Courses ranging from two to six kilometers will be marked and staffed by OAP student staff members.

Participants will receive a long sleeve t-shirt and the chance to win prizes at a raffle which will begin at noon. The cost for Tech students and children (12 and under) is $15, and the cost for adults is $18. The pre-registration fee, which ends Jan. 31, is $10 for Tech students and children and $12 for adults. Spring Semester Fitness Spring semester fitness classes offered by Michigan Tech Recreation Community Programs begin this week.

Adult classes offered include, but are not limited to, Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Ballet Barre, Boot Camp and Spinning. Youth programs are available as well. Spring Intramurals Men’s and women’s intramural basketball and co-rec volleyball are set to begin this week, Jan. 22 and 23, respectively. The officials’ meetings/ clinics will be held in the SDC Multipurpose Room on Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m. for basketball and on January 23 at 5:30 p.m. for volleyball. Upcoming entry deadlines are Jan. 29 at 5 p.m. for racquetball doubles, Jan. 31 at noon for table tennis singles and Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. for table tennis doubles.

If you’re a beginner and are interested in checking out what it’s like to cross country ski for free, make sure to attend Nordic Ski Club’s annual Free Ski Day. This Sunday, Jan. 26 from 1 until 5 p.m., non-members can check out equipment for free and ski with an instructor if desired.

“That’s probably the best time for a lot of groups and other people who just want to try it out,” said Keller.

Plans for multiple trips this semester have already been made. Last Saturday, club members took a trip to Ironwood, Mich., for a day at the ABR trails.

Upcoming events include the Book Across the Bay race in Ashland, Wis., on February 15, the American Birkebeiner in Hayward, Wisc., on Feb. 22, the Glide’n’Gorge at the Maasto Hiihto trails on Feb. 23 and the 34th Annual Great Bear Chase in Calumet on March 8.

Last year, the Nordic Ski Club had 341 members, and with plans to provide more lessons and opportunities to race, the club expects to grow in the years to come.

JOHN REYNOLDS Lode Writer Broomball can get brutal. Sometimes you just want to fool around with your friends, but the other team is taking the game way too seriously. In the extremely competitive off-campus broomball league, there hasn’t been a way to play without encountering these teams. That is until this year, when the Broomball Committee unleashed their noncompetitive broomball league as a subset of the off-campus league.

The non-competitive league has a lot of similarities to the regular leagues. For instance, the same rules are in place, and the penalties are the same. Also, the scores are still posted online, and at the end of the year, each team can still nominate someone for the skills competition. There are some key differences that make this the fun league that it is, however.

First off, there are no individual stats listed in the non-competitive league in an attempt to prevent sandbagging. There are no playoffs in this league either. This is not the league for a team looking to have an extended season.

“The off-campus league is where you see the most competition, so the Broomball Committee thought that would be the best place to slot in some non-competitive conferences,” said Cody Gustavson, broomball chair. The off-campus leagues could use some less competitive action for those who are only in it for fun.

In a survey sent out by the Broomball Committee earlier last year, they found that a little under half of 1,000 responders liked the idea of a non-competitive league.

having this league, and this was the year it finally came to fruition. There also have been talks of a more competitive league, but the Broomball Committee decided to focus solely on the non-competitive league this year.

Many benefits can come from having this league. Taking away people who aren’t as concerned with winning will help level the playing field in all divisions, ideally leading to better matchups. It is also less likely that you will hurt yourself as the refs have put a higher emphasis on player safety in this league, not that it was lacking before. This could be a good league for people to practice their dekes and shots before going to a team

There was thought of making an open non-competitive league, but there was a risk of it drawing too many on-campus teams away from the other leagues. For now, there are only two trial conferences that are being used as testers. If this idea is received well, there may be reappearance next year, but that all depends on the feedback the Broomball Committee receives. “We try our best to cater to the players,” said Gustavson.

Hopefully the non-competitive broomball league will survive its maiden voyage this season. If everything goes well, there could be some new leagues starting up on campus next year.

Critical matchup for Husky Basketball JOHN REYNOLDS Lode Writer The Michigan Tech women have a tough matchup against the Wayne State Warriors on Jan. 23. Wayne State debuted this week as the 20th ranked team in Division II basketball, the highest ranking in its program’s history.

“The Huskies are currently leading the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 10-0 in front of second place Wayne State, who has posted a 9-1 conference record.”

Wayne State is coming off of a win following just their second loss of the season. The Warriors have averaged 79.3 points per game, good enough to lead the GLIAC, meaning the Huskies’ defense could have their hands full.

The Warriors are led by Junior Shareta Brown, who is leading the GLIAC in field goal percentage and points per game.

The Huskies have won 11 in a row to bring their season record to 12-2. They are currently fourth in the GLIAC in scoring offense and fifth in scoring defense.

Mackenzie Perttu leads the Huskies in scoring with 14.6 points per game. Perttu will look to add to that against the Warriors, who stand 14th in the GLIAC for letting in an average of 71.4 points per game.

Danielle Blake leads the team with 2.2 blocks per game, good enough for 26th in Division II basketball. A big game from her would help against this high powered offence.

Tech will have their hands full with this matchup, but with momentum on their side, they should stand a good chance of earning a victory in Detroit on Thursday.

The men’s squad will also take on the Warriors immediately after the women face off. Wayne State is currently eighth in the GLIAC while Michigan Tech is tied for second place with five other schools. This meeting could have drastic effects on the outcome of this season.

Wayne State has been struggling in their last few matchups, winning only two of their last seven. Five of these games have been decided by seven points or fewer.

The Warriors are led in scoring by Bryan Coleman, who is averaging 18 points per game.

Michigan Tech has two players beating Coleman’s points per game total. Austin Armga is averaging 24.4 points per game, and Ben Stelzer is averaging 18.4 points per game. Tech may struggle against Wayne State’s fifth place GLIAC defense, but Tech gives up 2.5 fewer points per game. This could end up being a low-scoring affair.

Both teams have a lot riding on this game, the first after the half-way point of the season. Hopefully the Huskies can go to a tough school and get some momentum for the second half of the year with a pair of wins.
