Lode Writer One great quality about Michigan Tech is the variety of student organizations it offers.

This past Tuesday the Involvement Fair showcased the various organizations available for students to join.

With Michigan Tech seen as primarily an engineering school students involved in nonengineering majors may not be aware of the membership opportunities available to them on campus.

Being involved in a student organization­—whether you are majoring in engineering, psychology or something

else—is a great way to prepare for what is to come after college.

The American Marketing Association (AMA), for example, is a great way for students in marketing to test their skills and broaden their horizons.

“We do a lot of different things…[including] advertising, workshops and marketing research. It’s a good way to get a variety of experience[s] in what we will be doing as marketers someday,” said Rhea Moses, president of the AMA. “We like to educate ourselves as well. We are a part of a national organization and they have a lot of information out there for us.”

By being a member of the student chapter of a national or even international organization, students can network, look for jobs and gain valuable knowledge and insight from the resources made available by the larger organization.

The American M a r k e t i n g Association isn’t the only club that can help educate students, and many organizations on campus are eager to get you involved.

The Association of Psychology Students (usually abbreviated as APS), provides ways for psychology majors, or students interested in psychology, to make connections, do service and learn about the career paths available to them after

graduation. APS often hosts guest speakers, as well as graduate school students and faculty members.

“I think giving them [students] the opportunity to really connect with faculty is a big thing. We can get information and knowledge from them that you cannot get from other students,” said William Lehman, president of APS. “It’s nice having lots of small mentorships. Also having tips about grad. schools and letters of recommendation is probably the biggest help for students.”

Being involved in at least one student organization can be really helpful for students to figure out what path (or paths) to take to help make their future a success.

The Pre-Health Association provides many opportunities for those pursuing a career in health-related fields. With study sessions for the MCAT, GRE, and other tests to enter the various graduate schools, the Pre-Health Association is a great resource. The Association brings in guest speakers to talk about the different health professions, too.

They also provide volunteer opportunities, which is crucial for students hoping to enter the health professions. This semester, the group said they will be participating in StandA-Thon as well as Relay for Life events.

Joining a student organization is a great way for students to get involved on campus, have fun, participate in service projects, and gain access to a wider range opportunities for their future.

With so many organizations to choose from, each of which offering different resources and experiences, you are bound to find something suited to your interests and goals.

Linking husky alumni and students JANE KIRBY Lode Writer The relationship between Michigan Tech alumni and current students can be very valuable— and often overlooked. In order to promote these kinds of relationships, Alumni Relations recently created a page on LinkedIn called Alumni-Student Professional Networking, with the sole purpose of connecting current and former Huskies in an active, yet casual, way.

Erin Thompson, the Assistant Director at Alumni Relations, explains how there is a “very valuable and powerful network of alumni,” out there who are looking to connect with current Tech students to offer help with career networking and to dive back into the Husky community. Because the alumni once roamed the snow here at Tech, they can be a valuable resource for those who are looking for career advice or help in any area of study.

Jason Biehl, a Michigan Tech alumnus who is currently a senior process engineer at General Motors in Detroit, loves the fact that alumni now have “the ability to give advice that could help a Husky out.” He adds, “the Internet was a baby when I was at Tech, let alone social networking; so it’s great that we have this medium to be able to exchange ideas.”

Students have the opportunity through the Alumni-Student Professional Network group to get “a first-hand glimpse into potential careers,” as the Alumni Relations webpage says. In addition,

they can receive a plethora of encouragement, advice and support from people with similar backgrounds and areas of study as them, which can truly be a powerful thing.

For example, there are women alumni who wish to give support to current female Huskies at a school that is mostly male populated. Although Tech has changed since alumni like Stacey Keener, another Tech alumnus who now works for NASA in Houston, Texas, attended, women like Keener still feel the desire to support women at Tech. “I have always felt that if I had the ability to tap into alumni like students do today, I would have done better at Tech and not felt so alone trying to compete with all the guys,” Keener says. She also mentioned how much she loves to give back to MTU through the AlumniStudent Professional Network because it is so rewarding to help students out at such a critical time of their lives.

Located over the bridge in Hancock, the brothers of ΦKT say it is actually a benefit being away from campus. “There’s less time to commute, which means more time on statue,” said Brandon Hein, fifth year Mechanical Engineering major and statue chair for ΦKT. “People drive 5 to 10 miles out of their way from work to see the daily progress,” said Hein. “We get about 20 cars that honk a night,” said Scott Desotell, fifth year Chemical engineering major and statue chair for ΦKT. The building of their statue is coming along at a steady pace with eight to nine forms created each night, said Hein.

Forms are the basic building blocks of the statue and are the first part erected. The ΦKT brothers say hours spent on statue depend on the part of the week, with the weekdays having five to six hours, and the weekend having about nine hours of work done.

“In our fraternity, we have four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and statue,” said Andrew LaSage and Holden Hunt, ΦKT members.

Such a large statue takes a lot of manpower, along with the hours, “we have as many as we can working, 12 on the weekdays, and about 20 on the weekends”, said Hein.

Being successful with ‘statue’ (as most people refer to it) means “finding the thing that makes it worth it,” said Desotell. Goals help to keep the focus of the group.

“You instill pride in the project when there is a goal to finish,” said Desotell. “ With the theme of superheroes and villains, Hein said there is going to be more characteristic differences with shapes and other artistic aspects. “When you can focus on the more

To stay motivated, Woodhouse said, “The main motivator used to get statue workers is food. Hot chili is usually a winner.” First year Mechanical engineering student and Air Force ROTC member Michael Kostick said, “First of all, our group is on a volunteer basis. So

people who are there to work are there because they want to see our statue take first. We do have little perks [like the food Woodhouse mentioned] that come with working on the statue for a large period of time but the main way we stay motivated is a drive to create something wonderful.”

Again, no information was revealed about the overall theme of the statue, although Kostick said, “I think the most important reason is that people like to be surprised as long as the surprise is pleasant. So being a little secretive adds to the fun for both the builder and the beholder.“ To their competitors, Woodhouse said, “Look at our history. It speaks for itself.”

Preparing your vehicle for winter weather KATELYN WAARA News Editor With the heart of winter finally set in, car care and winter driving can be especially scary in the Copper Country. If you brought your “baby” to Michigan Tech with you, you should be aware of the dangers of driving the road conditions can bring and some of the ways you can prepare yourself for an emergency situation in the snow.

Because of their expensive nature and the heightened risks during a Houghton winter, there are some very important steps you can take to keep your vehicle in top shape.

First off, you probably considered acquiring a set of winter tires. Depending on how much driving you do, a good set of tires seems like the logical place to start when winterizing your car. If you don’t decide to spend the money on new tires, be sure you check your treads. The deeper they are, the better you will be able to handle the white stuff.

You should also consider scraping your windshield after each time you drive, depending on the conditions.

If you use your defrosters, turn off your vehicle and leave your wipers touching the windshield, chances are your wiper blades will be frozen to the windshield. Turning them on in this state can wear out the motor. Bottom line, check your wipers and scrape your windshield.

Internally, it’s a good idea to check your battery regularly. The cold Keweenaw air (especially the Arctic

system we had blow through two weeks ago) can put a lot of stress on your battery, particularly if you park it outdoors. Local car shops can load-test your battery for little or no cost.

Other things to think about include your tire pressure, engine coolant (or antifreeze) levels and fuel levels. If temperatures drop and your tank is low on gas, you could run into problems with your fuel lines. To avoid this, keep your tank full and add a bottle of Heet (fuel line antifreeze) or a similar product at the pump every-other time you fill up.

Finally, if you find yourself in an emergency situation, having a survival kit in your car makes a lot of difference.

TJ Witherspoon, a senior Forestry student from Marysville, MI (near port Huron) said he keeps a sleeping bag in his truck in case of an emergency. Other things to have include MREs (Meals ready to eat), a blanket, matches, a shovel and an extra pair of gloves.

Being in an emergency situation, whether you are stuck in a snow bank or ditch or you have to change a flat tire, can be even more nerve wracking because of the unreliable cell reception in the UP. Witherspoon mentioned the scary “Seney Stretch Situation”, where someone becomes stranded on the 30mile expanse of unwinding road between the Mackinaw Bridge and Marquette (the longest straight stretch of highway in the state).

Preparing yourself and your vehicle for the worst-case scenario is the best way to be prepared for anything.

If you get stuck in the local

area, however, many locals are more than happy to help pull you out. “Another thing is to have friends with big trucks,” added Witherspoon.

By using these tips, driving to road conditions and keeping your cell phone out of your hands while driving, you make the road a safer place for all Copper Country residents.

“Nintendo Land”: Review NICK BLECHA Pulse Editor With recent history in mind, it shouldn’t be very difficult to guess what Nintendo had in mind for “Nintendo Land.”

Nintendo’s MO for the past couple of console cycles has been to release some kind of game to show off every major new piece of hardware they come out with. With the DS it was the “Metroid Prime: Hunters” demo, with the Wii it was “Wii Sports,” and with the Wii Remote Plus it was “Wii Sports Resort.” “Wii Sports” in particular was wildly successful, and is still considered by some to be one of the best Wii games ever despite being a bundled launch title. With “Nintendo Land,” Nintendo is clearly trying to recapture lightning in a bottle, and while it doesn’t quite live up to the standards of its predecessor, it manages to mostly stand on its own and does a pretty good job of showing off the Wii U Gamepad while it’s at it.

While the theme of “Wii Sports” was obviously sports, “Nintendo Land” moves the theme to Nintendo itself: the game presents itself as a theme park with twelve attractions built around, well, theme park versions of various Nintendo franchises, from the recent to the classic to the nearly unheard-of. All of the games are built to show off the capabilities of the Wii U. Some games emulate the style of their originals more closely than others. “Pikmin Adventure” feels very much like a Pikmin game, for example, but “Octopus Dance” is nothing like “Game & Watch Octupus.”

The games are also sorted by categories; there are six solo games, three team games allowing from one to five players and three competitive games allowing two through

five players. The multiplayer games allow the choice of using either the Gamepad or a Wii Remote, playing differently either way. This is used to strong effect in some games: for example, in “Luigi’s Ghost Mansion,” the players with Wii Remotes try to shine a light on a ghost controlled by the player with the Gamepad; regardless of how fun the game is, it’s a good demonstration of the way the Gamepad’s screen can be used to hide information from other players. And speaking of fun: it varies. Some of the games are naturally fun little distractions (such as “Donkey Kong’s Crash Course” or “Balloon Trip Breeze”), some are more acquired taste or are a bit of a pain to play (“Octopus Dance” and “Metroid Blast”, respectively) and some just seem a little silly (“Yoshi’s Fruit Cart”), but there’s enough variety that there’s likely to be something for everyone.

Visually, the game is fun to look at. It’s nothing spectacular, but the art style seems designed to emulate a theme park rather than the original look and feel of the original games, so for example the enemies in the Zelda game look like they’re costumes, and in the Donkey Kong game the platforms at first appear to be the same girders as in the old arcade game, but actually are made of yarn.

In terms of audio, there isn’t much to speak of. The plaza simply loops the same, mildly-annoying-but-notgrating music over and over, while the games themselves usually feature remixes and arrangements of the famous tunes from their originals. The only voice acting in the game is of “Monita,” the floating robot guide who explains the rules of each game to the player, and though it isn’t terrible, one occasionally wishes it could be skipped.

Normally, this would be the section of the review where I make a “should you buy this game” recommendation.

However, for owners of the Deluxe Edition Wii U that question is moot, because the game is packaged with the console.

However, Basic edition owners don’t

automatically get a copy, so this section isn’t entirely pointless.

Ultimately, the game is a great piece of bundled software, but maybe not so great standing on its own. If you like the sort of bite-sized experience this sort of game provides, and you got the Basic Edition so you don’t already have it, it might be

worth picking up. On the other hand, more hardcore-types may want to give it a pass.

“Far Cry 3”: a review

“Far Cry 3” is a great experience for gamers who enjoy FPS’ and are looking to break away from online multiplayer ALEX SAARI Lode Writer As mentioned in a past article reviewing “Halo 4”, the trend of making sequels, prequels and other related titles to current video games is being more established.

In time for the holiday season of 2012, the recently-released “Far Cry 3” continues the Far Cry line.

Developed by the Ubisoft Montreal studio, “Far Cry 3” (FC3) takes place on a South Pacific island archipelago where players take control of protagonist Jason Brody, bent on exacting revenge towards several Rook Island natives.

While all first person shooters (FPS) do tend to repeat the same actions of ‘shoot’ and ‘get through this stage’, this particular title was a surprise to me. I had played both the original “Far Cry” and “Far Cry 2” and while the former was good, the latter had too many glitches that became obvious too quickly. FC3 brings back several formulas of its predecessor and also discards several concepts.

The gradual wear-down of

weapons has been thrown out the door and that alone was refreshing. “Far Cry 2” also had distinctly “bad” AI that that title, with emphasis on great visuals, should have been overcome with enemies that didn’t all act in sluggish movements.

FC3 returned the series to a position that featured brutal responses from enemies, rewards to attack stealthily/ silently, and an expanding tier of buyable items.

Roaming in the jungle to get from Point A to Point B is also not so simple. Animals (tigers, bears, boars, etc) will attack if you get too close to their territory and all species will quickly turn a stealth mission sour. Swimming across the various rivers and ocean channels is also not that safe as sharks and crocodiles quickly learn of your presence doing so.

While the plot of the game may leave something to be desired, the character development of protagonist Jason is well-crafted. You can see a ‘civilized’ modern man slowly lose touch with his American roots and slip into the mindset of the featured islanders, abandoning friends

as he works toward his end goals.

Overall, FC3 is a great experience for gamers who enjoy FPS’ and are looking to break away from online multiplayer for a while. While some elements (ambushing camps, quick and flurried gunfights, etc) may get repetitive, the campaign keeps players drawn in.

I have not yet tried the multiplayer aspect and have instead been focusing on “Halo 4” and “Call of Duty: Blacks Op II” for that particular itch. Therefore, I can’t make any judgments on online play and don’t quite know how the entire Far Cry series (beginning with the second installment) has handled multiplayer.

My overall rating for FC3? A solid 9/10, it’s an engaging story that features consequences and rewards for every action you make, graphically ‘gripping’ fights and ambushes, nature that won’t hesitate to take you down a notch or two and an expanding skill tree that gives access to basic elements start at the beginning of almost every shooter I’ve played thus far.

Winter Carnival is fast approaching NICK BLECHA Pulse Editor It’s hard to believe that in a little more than a week Winter Carnival will be here.

Winter Carnival is a number of things to students: first and foremost, it’s a couple of days off of classes, a chance to get caught up with homework and a chance to see the snow statues. But as Michigan Tech veterans know, there’s a lot more at Winter Carnival than

snow statue and no classes. For first-time Winter Carnivalites wanting to know what’s going on, or veterans looking to do something different this year, here’s a list of things to do at Winter Carnival.

The All-Nighter is the main event of Winter Carnival. Starting at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, student organizations participating in the all-night statue competition begin making their statues, while the monthlong participants finish their

work as well. Other student organizations set up food stands along the main pathway, and partiers dance all night in front of the M&M building. As an important note, no alcohol is allowed on the carnival grounds during the all-nighter.

In addition to the all-nighter, there are a number of special events associated with Winter Carnival. Broomball, of course, goes on throughout the week as usual. There are several other standards as well. One is the Beards Competition, in which

participants try to grow the best beard, goatee, or sideburns from a clean December shave, and then try to impress the judges with skits and songs.

Ice bowling is another, where instead of a ball teams hurl their own members down the ice. There are also human dogsled races, curling, ice fishing, skating, skiing, snow volleyball, snowshoe races and tug-of-war.

The Rozsa Center also participates in the Winter Carnival experience. The

Stage Revue, which takes place the day after the all-nighter, features various student groups performing skits based around the year’s theme. Finally, Winter Carnival is unofficially closed out by a high-billing comedy performance; this year, Comedy Central on Campus will perform.

ZONE If you have never before heard of the Winter Carnival Pictorial, this is your lucky day.

Every year the Lode staff puts together a 64 page book all about carnival and it is known as the pictorial.

The purpose of the pictorial is to showcase everything that Carnival is both to Tech students and visitors. When my friends ask me about the Pictorial, I describe it as “The closest thing Michigan Tech has to a yearbook.”

Throughout this week and next we will have photographers and writers attending all the special events associated with Carnival.

This information is gathere and then sent on to our designers.

Our designers spend long amounts of hours in the office working to put together a beautiful book. The design this year will be comic-book style to go along with the heroes and villians theme. Designers here at the Michigan Tech Lode are really heroes in themselves as they will spend their all-nighter finishing the pictorial so you can all see it on Thursday!

The finished product will have pictures and descriptions of all the special events. It will also showcase the Winter Carnival Queen candidates and the statue winners.

If you’ve never seen a Pictorial before, this is the year to start!

KRISHNAN RAGHAVAN Lode Writer Many of us use social networking services (such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) to communicate with friends and family, or even the general public.

A survey by Pew Internet indicates that about 65% of American adults who use the internet also use social networking services (http:// pewinternet.org/Reports/2011/ Social-Networking-Sites.aspx).

Despite the benefits of social networking services, does communication using social media bear any similarity to face-to-face communication?

Is it helpful?

One study identified a relationship between social anxiety or shyness and talking with others through technology. It found that people who aren’t comfortable talking with others in person are often more comfortable talking with people online or via text messaging.

Interestingly, it also found that people who don’t have trouble making friends in person also make friends online easily.

Another study found that many forms of digital communication (such as texting and instant messaging) give users more time to think about how they want to reply to something.

That extra time to think is largely unavailable in face-

to-face interactions, which can them more difficult. If someone took two minutes to answer a question you asked in person, wouldn’t it seem odd?

As a user of Facebook, I can’t help but notice several key differences between social networking services and faceto-face conversations. While both are used to communicate, two crucial aspects are missing online: body language and tone of voice.

Tech graduate student Sagar Chavan agreed, saying, “Talking on Facebook definitely doesn’t help in communicating face to face...[it] excludes important aspects of face to face communication...such as emotional level, tone of voice, and body language,” aspects which Chavan said

are important in personal and professional communication.

A growing number of people are using social networking services and digital forms of communication.

While these forms of communication are very powerful, they have disadvantages, too. Without being able to see another person’s body language or hear their tone of voice, it’s all too easy to misunderstand what someone is trying to say.

In comparing face-to-face and social networking, it seems that balance and moderation should be the goal.

Pay attention to the amount of time you spend online, and make sure you spend equal amounts of time talking to people face to face so you’re not missing out.

Can students finance the rising cost of college?

ERIKA VICHCALES Lode Writer As many of us have seen, college tuition is on the rise. In fact according to the National Center for Educational Statistics, “Between 200001 and 2010-11, prices for undergraduate tuition, room, and board at public institutions rose 42 percent, and prices at private not-for-profit institutions rose 31 percent, after adjustment for inflation.”

What does this mean for current and upcoming college students?

It means students have been and will be forced to find alternative ways to meet this rise in tuition. Students are finding new and creative ways to pay these hefty bills, but did colleges expect their students to find “sugar

daddies” or “sugar mommas”?

A new trend for staying out of college debt are websites such as SeekingArrangement.com, which states: “SeekingArrangement is the leading sugar daddy dating and sugar baby personals.

Always free for Sugar Babies, we are the number one website for those seeking mutually beneficial relationships. We are a matchmaking personals for successful and wealthy benefactors, and attractive guys and girls.”

SeekingArrangement.com recently reported that the number of college students who signed up in 2012 rose 58 percent, and Georgia State had the most students in the nation in 2012.

In response Don Hale, the vice president for public relations and marketing communications at the university said, “Georgia

State prides itself on fostering an enterprising and entrepreneurial spirit among its students. We are surely surprised to see it manifested in this way by these women.”

The fact that students are turning to the internet to find sugar daddies and mommas is truly atrocious. I value an education, but I also value my moral character. And yet, students are being put into a horrible position due to the rise in tuition costs. University spokespeople should express disgust that female students are being baited by sugar daddies to pay for their college education, not merely surprise at their “enterprising and entrepreneurial spirit.”

Student borrowing has doubled from $56 billion to $113 billion annually.

Classesandcareers.com states that 33 percent of students drop out and 38 percent of

dropouts name finances as their reason.

These statistics beg the question, has the price of college gotten so high that students will have to choose between following their moral compasses and selling themselves to pay for school?

Education prices continue to rise, leaving students at a loss of how to pay for school. Even Michigan Tech announced the price of room and board has increased since last year.

Students shouldn’t have to go find a sugar daddy or momma to pay for college.

Universities need to find a way to make college affordable for students. If the costs of college continue to rise, then students are going to continue finding extreme ways to pay for college. Students shouldn’t be desperate enough to pimp themselves out just to receive a degree.

“My boyfriend and I were so busy we only had sex every week and a half or so last semester.

Neither of us liked that, so we made a New Year’s Resolution to have sex at least twice a week.

It’s not working out and it makes me feel unwanted. What can I do to get us back on track?”

Peach’s Perspective It can be easy to get caught up in everything you have to do for classes, clubs or work and forget to hang out with friends, to call family or to be intimate with your partner. It can also be easy to forget about school and go overboard with your friends and boyfriend. Sometimes it’s even easy to bounce back and forth between the extremes. The one thing that is really hard to do is to strike a balance. Finding a balance between work life and home life will be a lifelong challenge and it is a challenge that going to college inadvertently exposes us to.

Because this could be a perpetual struggle, it’s great that you’re trying to find ways to deal with it now, but your ‘resolution solution’ may not be the best. Reflect on your last semester; in addition to being stressed about everything else, were you also stressed about not having enough sex? In an attempt to fix this, you’ve agreed to place more pressure on yourselves to fit one more thing in your week. The last thing you want is for sex to become another item to check off of your to-do list.

Getting back on track in this realm of your life isn’t as clear-cut as school.

You can’t make due dates, keep track

of the times per week and then expect it to feel like a natural expression of your feelings. Focusing on what will make you want to hop into bed is a better option than counting how many times you make it there. You can do this by kissing and touching more (hand holding, massages, dancing, cuddling; the more contact the better), by allowing your minds to wander and texting or talking about your dirty thoughts, by reminiscing about sexual memories, or maybe even reading or watching porn together. If all else fails, get naked when you’re together.

He won’t be able to concentrate on whatever else he was thinking about doing if you’re ready and waiting. This requires putting yourself out on a limb a little, which is nerve wracking when you feel rejected already, but if you made it through such a bad semester he wants you anyway.

Remember to strive for a balance of responsibilities and pleasures.

Don’t overuse the tips above, but do remember that the relationships you have throughout your life are as important as the work you do.

Now that we are a couple weeks into the semester, you and your boyfriend should have a pretty good idea of what to expect from your respective schedules. Since we are also somewhat fresh into the semester, hopefully your workloads are not too much to bear.

With that in mind, if you cannot find time to be intimate together now, the rest of the semester may be a repeat of your last. This is still avoidable.

Making time for sex can be important for your relationship and also for your mental well-being. Especially during high-stress times, sex can be a great opportunity to just let it all go and enjoy yourself and your significant other for a bit. Since most people prefer sex to be a spontaneous action, it is extremely difficult to schedule time for it and still have it feel the same. It is much more important that you schedule time just to be together. If during that time the mood strikes you that is wonderful.

However, the “mood” may not fit your active schedule.

This leaves you with two options: you can keep your schedule and sacrifice intimacy with your man, or you can clear your schedules and spend time together. These are the extreme options

that have presented themselves to you.

I would suggest finding some middle ground between keeping up with all of your schoolwork and activities while still being able to spend time with each other, intimate or not.

Don’t forget that you can initiate sex, too. Men can’t always tell what you are thinking, even if you drop hints that are less than subtle. Don’t leave it entirely up to your man to convince you when the time is right. If you want something, let him know. From personal experience I can tell you that there is a good chance he will clear his schedule if you ask him nicely. Use your womanhood to your advantage here, but don’t exploit it too often; after all, he is busy too.

Getting worked up over your busy schedules will only exacerbate the situation. It may be time to have another conversation about it. There is a good chance he shares your concerns, but might not know how to bring up the subject. Since you have openly discussed it with him before it should be an easy conversation to have, and both parties should be satisfied with the outcome.

JORDAN ERICKSON Sports Editor No stranger to putting points on the board, senior Sam Hoyt once again showed why she is one of the top players in the GLIAC as she netted a season high 27 points on Saturday.

The Huskies scored a total 70 points against Lake Superior State in their 12th win of the season.

The Arkansaw, WI native

shot 10-of-18 from the field and was 5-of-7 from behind the arc.

“Sam absolutely stood out tonight by hitting big shot after big shot,” said head coach Kim Cameron of Hoyt’s performance. “She is a difference maker.”

Hoyt currently leads in the team in points with a total of 292.

Hoyt and the rest of the Huskies will be back in action Febrary 2 as they travel to Northern Michigan.

The Burrow Broomball showdown A sports writer shares her view on Broomball

ELLIE FURMANSKI Lode Writer One of the more redeeming factors I look forward to at the start of spring semester is none other than the start of broomball season! The anticipation over winter break was killer.

Upon returning to Houghton, you better believe my broom was made and my stash of duct tape was filled.

Once games start, it’s eat, sleep, play broomball, more or less.

For those unfamiliar with broomball, sliding around on the ice with a taped-up broom in hand probably seems a little crazy. One cannot judge, however, until playing and discovering the beauty of the sport.

Regardless of the game or practice time, whether it’s at 11 a.m. on a Saturday or 11:15 p.m. on a Tuesday night, broomball trumps all.

As a returning resident of the Burrow in West Wadsworth Hall, I play for none other than the Burrow Brawlers, formerly known as the Burrow Ballers. Last year, as an inexperienced first time player, I had a blast.

While not much can be said about my measly six point contribution to the team stats, it’s fun to look back to that first game and see how far I’ve come. Broom handling, shooting, strategic sliding, footwork and using the boards are all skills acquired from simply playing the game. Learning to utilize my inner soccer player has been key to developing my skills and overall game strategy.

The Ballers landed a second place conference finish after posting a 6-3-1 record last year. A second round elimination in playoffs, however, left unfinished business to be tended to.

With only minimal roster

changes, the Burrow Brawlers are back in action to take care of that unfinished business this year.

So far, the Brawlers are going strong, and we are well on our way to finishing last year’s mission. Three games into the season, we stand at the top of the conference with a 3-0 record and 27 unanswered goals. While I’m still no all-star, I will say that I have already tied my point total from last year, and with six games yet to be played in the regular season, I expect that total to keep growing.

The Brawlers’ first game was a highly anticipated match against none other than Tenacious Donkey, a team comprised of mostly first-time broomball players in our hall. Needless to say, a bit of harmless smack talk and banter ensued throughout the Burrow in the weeks leading up to the start of the season.

The Donkies, despite their

tenacity, however, didn’t stand much of a chance (sorry, Donkies) against a hungry team of Brawlers.

After all, it was a match between the experienced and inexperienced.

While the match itself wasn’t much of a contest as far as points go, fun was had on both sides of the rink.

Our hall rivalry is a perfect example of the spirit of broomball here at Michigan Tech.

A little healthy competition, sportsmanship and fun are qualities of broomball that make first time players into returning players.

Since the early 1990s, broomball has been one of Michigan Tech’s most highly cherished traditions. At least for me, it is an integral part of winter and the Michigan Tech experience which I am more than willing to sacrifice a few weeks of bruised knees and elbows for.

Women ELLIE FURMANSKI Lode Writer The Michigan Tech Women’s Basketball team is firing on all cylinders. After posting their second consecutive 2-0 weekend, this time on the road, the Huskies remain at the top of the GLIAC North Division. So far this season, the team has posted an 11-3 conference record, 13-5 overall.

Thursday’s (Jan. 24) closely contended match against the Timberwolves of Northwood University ended in a 65-59 Husky victory.

Sophomore forward Jillian Ritchie posted the first points of the game off of a three-point jump shot. She went on to score fifteen points total in the game, twelve of which helped the

Huskies to take over a seven point lead at half. The Huskies trailed Northwood for the first time in the game after the Timberwolves strung together a 153 run over the first six minutes of the second half.

Northwood, however, could not withstand the Huskies’ offensive power. The Huskies were able to capitalize and score 22 points off of Northwood’s 20 turnovers and sunk 17 of 21 free throws.

Senior guards Sam Hoyt and Emma Veach chipped in a game high 20 and 12 points, respectively. A 12-6 run for the Huskies secured their lead in the final six minutes of the game. This was the Huskies’ third consecutive victory.

Sports Editor With all eyes on extending their three-game win streak, men’s Husky basketball heads to Northern Michigan to take on the rival Wildcats in the two school’s first meeting of the season.

The Huskies’ latest win was hard fought, ending in a 83-79 final favoring Black and Gold. The Huskies established a strong presence in the first half, at one point gaining a 19-point lead.

The Lakers came back out in the second half ready to fight for the final minutes, going on a 28-9 run and tying the game grew to a 69 point tie. With 33 seconds remaining, the Lakers made a layup, giving them a

two-point advantage.

The Huskies stayed strong and senior Matt Esters made two free throws to send the game into overtime.

Senior Ali Haidar showed why he is one of the top Huskies, adding 12 points to the score in overtime for a Husky win. Haidar tied his season high 35 points during the effort, and also added nine rebounds to the score.

The win put the Huskies at a 10-4 conference record and they currently sit at third place in the GLIAC North Division.

This Saturday the Huskies will take on the Wildcats who seem to be at the other end of the spectrum.

Except for a three minute period in the first half, the Huskies maintained a lead for the duration of the match, gaining 15 points on the Lakers in their largest lead of the game. The first half ended in a four point advantage for the Huskies.

After shooting 37-percent from the field in the first half, the Huskies improved to 52-percent in the second half.

Hoyt stood out by scoring a season-high 27 points in addition to grabbing two rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. Ritchie also contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. Skiers compete at St. Scholastica Invitational ELLIE FURMANSKI Lode Writer This past weekend, the Michigan Tech Men’s and Women’s Nordic Ski teams competed at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, Minnesota, at the St. Scholastica Invitational.

The Huskies scored 233 points and took third overall behind St. Scholastica (258 points) and Northern Michigan University (299 points).

Saturday, Jan. 26, the invitational kicked off with classic races. Six Huskies finished in the top-twenty of the 11.6-kilometer men’s classic race.

Luke Gesior came in first for the Huskies placing fifth overall (34:23). Teammate Thomas Kendrick also broke into the top-ten with a tenth place finish (35:11). According to head coach of the Huskies Joe Haggenmiller, Kendrick skied the best race of his career.

Other top-twenty

performances came from Matt Dugan, Kyle Hanson, Jay Woodbeck, and Matt Wong who took 11th (35:35), 15th (36:04), 16th (36:19), and 17th (36:26), respectively.

Four skiers on the women’s team broke into the top-twenty of the women’s 5.8-kilometer classic race on Saturday. The first place finisher for the Huskies was Sarah Daniels who finished 11th overall (20:20).

Deedra Irwin followed right behind placing 13th (20:32).

Lynn Duijndam and Rachel Mason took 17th (20:43) and 20th (21:02).

Day two of the invitational followed on Sunday, Jan. 27, with skate races.

The men’s 15.7-kilometer freestyle race ended with three Huskies in the top-twenty.

Hanson, Woodbeck, and Gesior held strong together and all finished within one minute of each other.

Hanson led the Huskies and took 9th (55:56) with Woodbeck and Gesior following closely

behind in 10th (55:59) and 12th (56:38) place.

Duijndam earned the highlight performance of the weekend for the Huskies on Sunday in the women’s 15.7-kilometer freestyle race.

She placed 2nd (49:43), just 1:04 behind Northern’s first place finisher Rosie Frankowski.

Daniels, Irwin and Mason rounded off top-twenty finishes for the Huskies by taking 7th (50:38), 12th (52:07), and 13th (52:10).

Overall, the women’s team finished tied for second place with St. Scholastica, and the men took third. Combining team scores, the Huskies took third place for the team title.

Both Nordic teams will compete next weekend, February 2 and 3, at the CCSA Sprint/Relay Championships.

Northern will host the meet at the Al Quaal Recreation Center in Ishpeming, Michigan.

The win will extend the win-streak to four just in time for the Huskies to return for their Winter Carnival play.

The teams will meet for the rivalry game at 1 p.m.

Huskies vs Mavericks

Hockey Travels to take on No. 14 Nebraska-Omaha After taking a week hiatus, the hockey Huskies are back in play as they travel to the University of Nebraska-Omaha to take on the Mavericks.

Past Encounter

Unable to catch a break in the first meeting of the season, the Huskies fell to the Mavericks in 2-1, 5-3 back in November. Unlucky bounces deciding Friday nights game, the Huskies came close to taking the win on Saturday.

Goals from sophomores David Johnstone and Blake Pietila had the game tied at two in the second period, but the

Huskies were unable to hold off the Mavericks advances as the visitors netted four goals in the second period.

The Mavericks

Unlike the Huskies, the Mavericks were in full force this weekend, sweeping Bemidji State on the road. The wins improved the team to a 11-5-2 WCHA record and 159-2 overall, putting them at third place in the conference.

Maverick’s offensive strength is found in Ryan Walters who currently leads the nation, and Black and Red, in points with

39 (15 goals, 24 assists). Walters scored the game-winner in the Maverick’s Saturday night win over the Beavers and had a total of three points on the weekend. Walters is not alone in racking up points for his team; forwards Matt White and Josh Archibald sit not far behind, tied for 25 points a piece.

away from the Beavers with a 4-0 win and 2-2 tie the next night. Freshman net minder Pheonix Copley has been hot between the pipes for the Huskies. In his past five games, the North Pole, AK native has tallied three shut-outs, two coming from the GLI weekend.

The Huskies have had trouble finding offensive stability, with only four conference wins so far this season. Freshman Alex Petan leads the team in points with 20 (seven goals, 13 assists) and fellow underclassmen David Johnstone and Jujhar Khaira round out the top three

for the Huskies.

Puck Drop

The Huskies still looking to move up in the conference need the four potential points from this series desperately.

Standing in their way are top players like Walters and Maverick special teams.

Underclassmen lead the Huskies in their scoring efforts, but they still face a lack of offensive strength across the board. A tough weekend on the road is ahead for the Huskies who are hopefully ready for the challenge.
