Special events began Sunday, Jan. 27 and will continue until Feb. 9.

Events take place at a variety of venues including the SDC practice fields, the broomball rinks, the Rozsa Center and Fisher 135.

Organizations who compete gain points for Carnival for each event they compete in and place or win.

Behind the scenes with Blue Key ERIKA VICHCALES Lode Writer

Winter Carnival: the event students, faculty and locals look forward to every year is just around the corner. With it being such a big event, it takes a lot of planning and manpower to make Winter Carnival happen.

Many may have wondered how the long weekend becomes such a success. The brains behind the operation are members of Blue Key. Blue Key is a student honor society, for those invited and selected, which is divided into committees to run a variety of campus activities. Their main task is planning and running Winter Carnival.

To help make it a success, Blue Key divides

themselves into committees of about eight to ten people, with each group focusing on specific areas of Winter Carnival. “We have the executive committee, which is the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. We also have a queens committee, stage revue committee, statues committee, publicity, funding and awards committee and a special events committee,” said President of Blue Key Michelle Chiodi.

“The stage revue, queens, special events and statues committees handle all of the aspects that go with their particular events. Then the funding and awards committee oversee all of our fundraising as well as trophies for the winners of the different events.”

One question many people have asked is how the theme for Winter Carnival is chosen each year. Anyone can submit ideas and suggestions for a theme but ultimately Blue Key will decide. They put aside a night to go through all of the suggestions and choose one they believe will be a good theme for the next year. After that, the slogan for that particular theme is decided. This year’s theme is “Heroes and Villains find their powers in these frozen winter hours”.

Not only is the theme of Winter Carnival important but also the variety of activities that occur.

This year there will be a few new activities for students at the all-nighter. The MUB Board will be presenting a film and the Ridge Roamers, a climbing club on campus, are building an ice-climbing wall for students to use during the all-nighter.

To help make sure that everything is run smoothly and to not have too much stress before Winter Carnival, Blue Key holds weekly meetings to go over the details and to make sure everyone is on task and topic.

Though it can be stressful at times, those in Blue Key enjoy hosting Winter Carnival.

Chiodi added, “Seeing how everything unfolds each year is the most exciting thing for me. We pick a theme in the spring, just about a year ahead of the next Winter Carnival, so seeing how all of the statues and events unfold. It’s really nice to see everything come together and the results of all of our hard work.”

Those behind the scenes are hard at work and are eager to have a small break before planning for next year begins.

Tech alumnus donates snow removal tools JANE KIRBY Lode Writer In the midst of a snowy winter, Tech’s facilities and grounds staff are busier than ever trying to keep the, seemingly endless, falling snow cleared from the campus walkways. With all the snow, the removal equipment was beginning to wear out—from snowplows to salt spreaders and more.

Dave Brule, a Tech alumnus who is now president of THE BOSS Snowplows, generously donated three plows, a salt spreader and other accessories—all together priced at around $20,000—to facilities, just in time for the heavy snowfall this January. Among the new equipment is a ninefoot, two-inch plow for the Chevy one-ton truck as well as a plow for facilities’ new Polaris Ranger 900.

Pete Pelissero, grounds manager for facilities, said that the new equipment is being put to great use with all the recent snow accumulation. “It really allow us to make campus safer for everyone,” Pelissero said.

“It keeps all the nooks and crannies ice and snow-free, as well as all the footpaths accessible and clear.”

As snow piles high, the question of where to put it all often arises, but with Winter Carnival conveniently on the way, facilities is busy moving it around to help out student statue-builders around campus. George Butvilas, Director of Facilities Management, said that facilities is always glad to help out with supplying snow, especially since they are running out of room to

Cocoa Shack warms student’s bodies and hearts NICOLE IUTZI Lode Writer Blizzard conditions at the Broomball rink call for something to warm up the body, maybe something a little chocolaty, with marshmallows on top.

The IRHC broomball Cocoa Shack offers just the thing: Hot Cocoa.

Hot cocoa is complementary to students for the duration of the

broomball season.

Provided by the InterResidence Hall Council (IRHC), all can enjoy the benefits of a steamy cup of cocoa.

There is no need to swipe an ID card; the only question to answer is ‘would you like marshmallows?’

In the past, volunteers worked handing out cocoa but hours were random and unreliable.

Starting with the 20102011 school year students

are now hired to work in the Cocoa Shack, providing dependable cocoa to cold individuals. The Broomball committee pays the wages of the workers.

The Cocoa Shack is open from 7-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 7-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. There will be extended hours for the Winter Carnival celebration.

Office of Institutional Equality name change receives positive feedback KATELYN WAARA News Editor Michigan Tech Affirmative Programs has recently announced they have changed their name to the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) in order to better represent their duties on campus.

The new OIE will operate in the same location, but with an improved name.

Accompanied by Michigan Tech University Marketing and Communications, OIE took a “surprise” marketing approach with promotional items such as posters, being put up overnight last Tuesday, Jan. 29. On Wednesday morning, the campus community was

introduced to the new office.

“The name Affirmative Programs holds no understanding with state and national university departments who do similar work,” said Dr. Jill Hodges, Director of the OIE. The name “Affirmative Programs” was also problematic on campus. “…when I would ask employees or students what the Affirmative Programs Office stood for, I realized it was not clear.” Hodges added, “I believe that the word Equity in our name signifies a broader, more comprehensive label of what we actually do.”

OIE ensures an environment free from prejudice, harassment and equal opportunity, allowing

for individual growth and learning for students, faculty, staff and campus visitors.

“The campaign is hopefully creating a deeper understanding of the mission of our office,” said Hodges.

In the following weeks, more and more people will become aware of the OIE, but as of now, Hodges said the campus community’s reactions have been very positive.

“We go through about 100 cups a night, [and] there’s a lot more given out on colder nights,” said Yuritzi Garcia, the Cocoa Shack Coordinator. “It’s a total of about 7,000 cups of hot cocoa a season,” said Garcia.

“There are five tablespoons of hot cocoa mix put in each cup.”

Students visit the cocoa shack on a regular basis; some get multiple cups a

night. “The referees are constant consumers of hot cocoa,” Garcia said.

“People get really excited over the marshmallows, and the dispenser, it’s entertaining to watch,” said Stephanie Boomgaard, a second-year Cocoa Shack employee.

Some comments received by the cocoa shack staff include, “‘You make me so happy,’ ‘This is the best hot cocoa,’ or a simple smile of joy,” said Boomgaard.

Beards Competition

Thursday Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. in Fisher 135 Starting in December with cleanly shaven faces, contestants begin to grow their beards. A two-month time frame is given for the competition. Using skits, songs and costumes, participants show off the final product for one of three categories: beards, goatees and sideburns. “I’ve been growing my beard and it’s getting too thick, I’m ready for this competition,” said Andrew LaSage, first year Chemistry student.

Curling

Various times. See event schedule at the Calumet Drill House Curling is the ancient Scottish game of throwing a granite stone across the ice while teammates coax it along with brooms.

“It’s an interesting game to watch.

I’ve never participated in curling but now that I have it’s actually really interesting,” said Jordan Kubista, third year Mechanical Engineering student.

Broomball

Various times. See event schedule on the Broomball rinks Using duct-taped brooms and a mid-sized frozen ball, teams slide around trying to get the ball past the other team’s goalie. Similar to hockey without the skates, a Michigan Tech tradition is continued yet again.

Ice Fishing

Saturday, Feb. 9 at 8 a.m.

on Chassell Bay A combination of team and individual effort, student’s fish for the largest catch on the frozen Chassell Bay. Winners are decided upon by weight of the live fish. There is a registration fee for this event and prize money is awarded to the winners.

Ice Bowling

Various times. See event schedule at Dee Stadium As Life-sized as bowling could get, a student is hurled down a lane by team members in the hopes of knocking down as many pins as possible. Seriously.

Queens Coronation

Rozsa Queens candidates show off their talents and the winner of student voting is revealed. The process for finalists includes an interview as well as the talent portion at the coronation.

Euchre tournament an unexpected success NICK BLECHA Pulse Editor

The Michigan Tech chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) was worried that not many people would show up for their fundraiser, especially considering they had to cancel part of it due to technical difficulties.

However, enough people came to justify a waiting list.

The fundraiser, a Euchre tournament held last Friday night in the Wadsworth Annex, was a wild success for ACS. The fundraiser was actually meant to be two tournaments: a Euchre tournament, and a “League of Legends” tournament. However, due to what the organizers described as “technical difficulties,” the “League of Legends” tournament was cancelled.

Winter Carnival, the power boxes that would needed for the computers in the “League of Legends” tournament were mostly checked out by fraternities and student organizations working on snow statues.

To make up for the cancelled event, video game consoles were hooked up to the TVs in the annex for people to play.

This proved to be a wise choice, as more people signed up to play Euchre than there were tables set up; the consoles gave teams something to do while waiting for tables to become available.

Although the ACS had a game night fundraiser last year, it was not nearly as popular or successful explained ACS member Audra Winter. The group was completely taken by surprise at the number of people that showed up to play, and Winter said they hope to

There were a number of prizes available including a box of truffles, gift cards to Orbit and a Michigan Tech

sweatshirt. Some of the prizes were set aside for the winner of the tournament, but most were given away raffle-style.

All paying entrants received a ticket for their entry, and for each round a team survived in the single-elimination

tournament they received another ticket. Tickets could also be purchased directly.

In the end, about twenty teams signed up to play in the tournament. Also, five or six people came just to play video games and hang out.

Exciting line up for Stage Revue ALEX SAARI Lode Writer With Winter Carnival fast approaching, Michigan Tech and the local community are gearing up for the three-day event line-up.

The theme of this Carnival is “Heroes & Villains Find Their Powers in These Frozen Winter Hours” and all events try to display that theme. One of the returning events to this year’s Carnival is the Stage Revue where campus clubs, fraternities and sororities perform skits.

Stage Revue has been of part of Winter Carnival for several years but wasn’t always a oneshow event. Three years ago, two shows actually made up the

Revue; one show was targeted towards adults while the other was more kid-friendly.

Last year, the two-show format was dropped in exchange for the one-show format that will be featured this winter.

With the recent switch to the single-show format, each performer now combines both adult and kid-friendly material, allowing for a richer story to be told.

While the local community knows about the towering snow statues made each year, those statues cannot move and can only tell one specific story.

While both Stage Revue and the statues follow the theme of each individual Carnival, Stage Revue allows students the creative freedom to draw

the audience into each story with character performances, action, dialogue and atmosphere.

In addition, all Revue groups can add their own story lines to the specific theme, “Heroes & Villains Find Their Powers in These Frozen Winter Hours” in this Carnival’s case.

This year’s Revue features seven performing campus fraternities, sororities and clubs.

The Air Force ROTC will put on “Houghton’s Heroes” where the dastardly Northen Michigan University is up to no good and tries to destroy Carnival.

Theta Chi Epsilon’s “Yooperheroes” features four Yooper super-heroes flying into action to save the U.P.

“When the Wolves Come Calling” by Alpha Gamma Delta tells the story of three Alaskan villains wishing to take over “Da Yoop”. In this performance, Blizzard T. Husky and the Winter Carnival Queen must stop that plan.

“Spider Man Goes to College: Peter Parker - Biomedical Engineer” by the Delta Zeta sorority brings the New York web-slinger hunting for a quieter lifestyle. What he finds in return is unknown until the Delta Zeta girls take the stage.

Sigma Phi Epsilon paints the picture of a disgruntled Northern Michigan Univeristy student (rejected by Tech) who goes after campus treasures in “A Rival’s Revenge”.

Raptor Hall’s “Super Yooper Euchre” brings to light a journey

of four students returning to campus from break. Check out this performance to see if they make it back to the Yooper Loop.

“One Machine to Woo Them All” by Phi Kappa Tau describes a plot in which a part of a ‘dating machine’ is stolen from the story’s villains. If the part is not recovered, then the villains will remain dateless for all eternity.

Stage Revue will be held this Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Rozsa.

Tickets are available preshow at the SDC box office or online. Each ticket is $10.75.

When the one-show format was established, the Rosza was almost sold out. The average crowd is expected to be between 400 and 500 people so act fast!

Comedy Central coming to campus COREY SAARI Lode Writer Winter Carnival 2013 is approaching and will be here almost before we know it.

Among the events of Winter Carnival is Comedy Central on Campus.

Hosted by the Student Entertainment Board, Comedy Central on Campus is a traveling event meant to give up and coming comedians a chance to perform at campuses scattered across the United

States. Ferris State, Arizona State and UC Berkeley are just a few of the schools that have been visited so far.

The relatively untested comedians set to appear on the last night of Winter Carnival at the Rozsa Center are John Mulaney, Sheng Wang and Jermaine Fowler.

All three of these comedians have clawed their way up from obscure roots to some degree of success and recognition.

Most comedians new to the scene have dreams of making the big time by appearing on TV shows popular across the

Club Indigo February movie NICOLE IUTZI Lode Writer Celebrating its 19th season Club Indigo continues to bring food and film to the Calumet Theater.

On Feb. 8 the film “Amadeus” will be featured. Catering will be provided by the Keweenaw Co-op Natural Foods Market and Deli.

“Amadeus” received eight Academy awards in 1984 and remains a pinnacle of biographical films. As a musical composer, Mozart’s life was riddled with dramatic events.

The film chronologically tells the story of his life, performances, judgments in character and time with family.

The movie, originally created as a Broadway play, was so successful that British playwright and director Milos Forman created a movie from it.

Set in mid-Europe, the location is reproduced in elaborate detail in the film.

Best Picture, in the 57th annual

Academy Awards, is one of the awards won by the film, for a combination of superior acting, detail in costume, exceptional production values and scenes.

“Amadeus” is a biography told by Salieri, Mozart’s most serious competitor. Rivalry between the two is seen throughout the film. Included in the movie are actors Tom Hulce from Plymouth, Michigan, playing Mozart, and F. Murray Abraham in his Academy-winning role as Salieri.

The Club Indigo buffet will be held at 6 p.m. in the theatre’s ballroom, followed by the movie at 7:15 p.m. in the historic theatre, adjoining.

On March 8, Club Indigo will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with “Young Cassidy” a dramatized version of the life of writer, playwright and poet Sean O’Casey during the Irish Revolution.

Driven by big dreams, Jermaine Fowler arrived in New York City at age 20. Since then, his exploits have include d becoming a steady personality on CollegeHumor.com and appearing in commercials for various products and services

such as Microsoft Bing and Bud Light.

ZONE Groundhog Day, always celebrated on Feb. 2, was this past Saturday. I never knew where the tradition came from, so I decided to do some digging to enlighten myself and the Lode’s loyal readers about Punxsutawney Phil and Groundhog Day. The largest Groundhog Day celebration occurs in Punxsutawney, Penn. The most prominent folklore says that German settlers in Punxsutawney found the groundhog, known as Punxsutawney Phil, to be a very intelligent animal, one wise enough to see its shadow and go back into hibernation for another six weeks of winter.

The first Groundhog Day was held in Punxsutawney in the 1800s. Today, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club recognizes the efforts of Punxsutawney Phil, celebrating at a family fun park known as Gobbler’s Knob. It is the largest Groundhog Day celebration in the United States. This year will mark Punxsutawney Phil’s 127th prediction.

According to Punx sutawne y ’s Groundhog Club, there has only been one Punxsutawney Phil. Every summer, at a Groundhog Picnic, he is given a sip of Groundhog punch, which allegedly gives him to accumulate seven more lives. Many other states celebrate Groundhog Day. Did you know that Gov. Sarah Palin signed a bill in 2010 which allowed Alaska to celebrate Marmot Day? Apparently there is a low population of groundhogs in the 49th state.

Unruly crowds at Broomball ZACH EVANS Lode Writer The feel of snow against your face and the slippery pull of the ice beneath your feet, out of the corner of your eye you see a flash of blue hurtling towards you followed by a mass of chaos in human form filled with violent intentions.

You can feel an ugly soreness on every inch of your body but right now all that matters is that patch of blue. With every ounce of might you smash your broom into the ball and it goes flying right past the goalie. The snow suddenly feels a bit warmer and the lights a bit brighter, as you anticipate the cheers of you comrades as they congratulate you for the first goal of the season, yet the dream is shattered because all you can hear is the obnoxious screeching of the other team’s fan section.

Broomball is an essential part of Michigan Tech, built upon nearly 20 years of intramural tradition and winter excitement; for many it is now hard to imagine one without the other. It is not just the thrill of competition that brings people back each year but the bond teams form as ordinary Tech students turn into winter warriors.

Unfortunately, some people get carried away by this momentum and seem to forget the feelings of other players.

This is particularly true for certain fan sections who try to stay warm by yelling obscenities, often taunting their own team as well as the opposing players.

This is not to say that fan sections are bad. In many ways they are what make the games so exciting—they pump up their teams and give players a taste of what it is like to be a professional. However, “Some people take their enthusiasm too far and it’s important to use moderation because you do not want the other team to feel bad,” said Alex Dinsmoor, Public Relations Manager for the Broomball Committee.

Fan sections are rarely equal in size and often it might be a group of ten supporters against one or two for the other team.

Fans need to avoid creating a cheering or jeering competition of their own and focus on the reason they stand out there in the freezing cold: to support their team, not to shout over the other enthusiasts.

They should realize that there is a distinct

difference from the atmosphere found in broomball and that of a professional game.

While groups like the Huskies Pep Band and Mitch’s Misfits are known for their eccentric support tactics, including heckling, the athletes these groups cheer against are trained to ignore outside influence and actively chose an activity which stirs up controversy. However, many broomball players are amateurs in it for fun and do not need to feel judged by a mass of unruly spectators.

Fans should try to keep it positive as well. If you are supporting a competitive team, don’t heckle your players for every little trip up they make, otherwise it creates a negative atmosphere for all those involved. Stick to positive remarks like “good job” or “you can do it.” Humor is also enjoyable as long as it is done without criticism.

Overall, “people need to just keep it in the spirit of broomball,” said Dinsmoor. While each person has their own interpretation of what this “spirit” is, I believe it is a reflection of how Michigan Tech lives everyday. We are an intelligent, hard working community that understands how to succeed without being cutthroat and we know how to have fun while remaining down to earth. These are all qualities which we should attempt to uphold both on and off the broomball rinks.

Point, Counter-point Same-sex marriage MEGAN WALSH

It wasn’t until 1920 that the Nineteenth Amendment was adopted, granting all women in the United States the right to vote.

It’s shocking, really, to think that a country founded on the notion that all individuals are created equal took so long to give half of their population a basic civil right. We look back at this date with pride. “Look at what we accomplished,” we say. But we neglect the fact that gay Americans are still struggling with the same issue that plagued the women of the early 20th century: inequality.

As of January 2013, only nine states in the US have legalized same-sex marriage and only six recognize civil unions or domestic partnerships.

Much of the resistance to the idea of same-sex marriage stems from the belief that letting LGBT couples marry will destroy the institution of marriage.

Many argue that the definition of “traditional” marriage should be restricted to only a man and a woman.

Howver, there is no such thing as a “traditional marriage.” Looking back at the evolution of the meaning of ‘marriage’ throughout history, one could say that heterosexual monogamy can be considered ‘unnatural’ as well.

Many examples of marriage have been based on polygamy, the use of mistresses and communal child rearing. What makes contemporary marriage the ‘traditional’ choice and why must it include only heterosexual couples?

The exclusion of LGBT couples who partake in a civil union leads to these couples being faced with limitations

that their married counterparts enjoy.

According to a Government Accountability Office report, civil marriage brings at least 1,138 legal protections with it, including the right to take leave from work to care for a family member and the right to redeem social security benefits of a deceased spouse. These critical protections are not given to those in a civil union.

Even if couples in a civil union were one day given the same rights as married couples, the fact that a civil union remains a separate status than marriage represents a real inequality.

Even with the same legal benefits, they would still have a second-class status. It would still be socially unacceptable for a lesbian to call her life partner her wife.

Denying same-sex couples the right to marry stigmatizes them as inferior. It sends out a message to society that it is acceptable to discriminate against them.

Our country has been down this road before. We have denied women the right to vote, banned interracial marriages and warred over slavery.

We look back on these injustices knowing that they were absurd, but still face inequalities born of the same antiquated mindset.

We must learn from our past and move forward, granting every citizen the same rights to happiness. In the words of President Obama, “Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like everyone else under the law—for if we are truly equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.”

Gay individuals and couples are no different from any other minority, be it African Americans, Hindus or worshippers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and to live a gay lifestyle is a choice supported by United States law. The Constitution protects United States citizens in their “pursuit of happiness;” by using sexual orientation as a loophole to justify discrimination, we detract from the values we hold dear.

Marriage is an institution that can be traced back to the dawn of civilization and, with minor exceptions, has been between one man and one woman.

Not only that, but the ritual and format of marriage has been governed by religious organizations.

In the United States, Christianity has been the prevalent force in establishing our ideas of what marriage is. And, whatever some people think, the Bible is clearly opposed to homosexuality, let alone allowing gay marriage (Lev. 18:22).

Yet here lies the age old question of religion’s place in government.

America has taken a firm stance in supporting a separation between church and state. While not explicitly stated in the Constitution, this separation has been commonly linked to the First Amendment which protects religion from the state and vice versa.

In a letter to the Danbury Baptist association, Thomas Jefferson stated, “...the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions.”

Our government is designed to be a tool to enact democratic will, not a platform to promote ideas. Yet, in

regards to marriage, our government still uses a Christian interpretation.

Subtly, this connection gives the Church power within the government, influencing the direction of social policy. But this relationship is also poisonous to the Church, because it gives the government control of what this holy bond means in the practical context of our society.

This objectification strips away the sacred place that marriage used to hold and makes it into a very tangible concept, cruelly subjected to a debate of semantics. This is where the idea of civil unions originated from, as a way to share the legal rights of marriage without infringing on its religious connotations. However, the reality is far from perfect, as civil unions lack many of the legal rights of marriage and allow for discrimination against gay partnerships.

We should officially separate the term ‘marriage’ from the hands of government. Civil unions could be used as a tool to both grant equality and preserve the religious rights of others. I would propose that the legal version of a marriage is universally replaced with civil unions for both straight and gay couples, leaving individual religions to grant the status of ‘marriage’ as they see fit. Gay couples should be allowed access to all the benefits that legal marriage currently grants, specifically in regards to the ability to adopt.

Ultimately we are headed down a road towards universal support of gay marriage and this might be a way to maintain the traditional values this country was built upon.

JORDAN ERICKSON Sports Editor After falling Friday night to the No. 14 NebraskaOmaha Mavericks, the Huskies came out Saturday night looking for a win.

After keeping the game tied 1-1, the game was

sent into extra minutes to determine a winner.

At the 2:56 mark into overtime play, senior forward Mikael Lickteig scored his first goal of the season, giving the Huskies the much-needed win.

“Good for Mikael,” said head coach Mel Pearson.

“We see his ability in practice and it’s great for

him to come out and do it in a game.

The goal was Lickteig’s second of his career, and brings his point total up to two (one goal, one assist) on the season.

The Huskies return to home ice this Friday and Saturday night as they take on the Alaksa-Anchorage Seahawks.

Nordic teams compete in

CCSA Sprint/Relay Championships ELLIE FURMANSKI Lode Writer After two consecutive weekends traveling to Minnesota, the Michigan Tech Men’s and Women’s Nordic ski teams stayed relatively close to home this past weekend competing in the CCSA Sprint/ Relay Championships in Ishpeming, Michigan. Strong performances all around helped the Huskies to earn their current second place team standing in the CCSA Championships, an event which will continue in two weeks.

Saturday (Feb. 2), the teams competed in freestyle sprints.

In total, five men and three women qualified for the heats.

Highlight performances for the Huskies came from Raphael Bechtiger and Sarah Daniels who placed third and fourth in the men’s and women’s races, respectively.

Luke Gesior and Jay Woodbeck also made the top-ten in the men’s race placing seventh and tenth.

Lynn Duijndam and Deedra Irwin rounded off scoring for the women with eighth and twelfth place finishes.

Overall, the men’s team placed third with 64 points.

Northern Michigan University and Saint Scholastica edged the Huskies with 73 and 65 points. The women’s team placed second with 63 points, four points behind Northern Michigan University.

Sunday (Feb. 3), both of the Michigan Tech Men’s and Women’s Nordic teams finished third in the classic relays. The men’s team put together three different relay teams. Sondre Sandvik, Matt Wong, and anchor Luke Gesior made up the Huskies’ first relay team. Their third place finish in the 3x10-kilometer relay came down to a photo finish, literally just a ski tip (0.2 seconds) behind the Saints. In

addition, Matt Dugan, Thomas Kendrick, and Jay Woodbeck’s relay came down to another dramatic ending after edging out Alaska Fairbanks by 0.2 seconds to secure a fourth place finish. The Huskies’ third team placed eighth.

On the women’s side, the Huskies’ top team consisted of Deedra Irwin, Sarah Daniels, and Rachel Mason. They completed the 3x5-kilometer race in 40:38, just over a minute behind Northern’s first place finishing team. The second relay was skied by Lynn Duijndam and redshirts Alice Flanders and Ruth Oppliger.

They completed the course in 44:09 and placed tenth overall.

Head coach of the Huskies Joe Haggenmiller was pleased

by the depth which both teams demonstrated in the sprint and relay races this past weekend. In addition, he hopes his Huskies will be able to head into the final weekend of the CCSA Championships full speed ahead after picking up a bit of momentum in Ishpeming.

The Huskies will take off Winter Carnival weekend before resuming competition once again on Feb. 16 and 17 at the CCSA Distance Championships in Coleraine, Minnesota. The deciding events of the CCSA Championships will include an individual start 10-kilometer classic race at Mt. Itasca on Feb. 16 and a 20-kilometer mass start freestyle race on Feb. 17.

After a loss to rivals during the past weekend, the Huskies are preping to defend homecourt this coming week.

Huskies prepare to defend during Carnival JORDAN ERICKSON Sports Editor The Huskies are back home for a two-game series during Winter Carnival as they host the Ferris State Bulldogs and the Grand Valley State Lakers this Thursday and Saturday.

The Huskies return to the Wood Gym after an unsuccessful venture in Marquette where they fell to the Wildcats in a 59-55 final.

The Huskies ended being in almost every statistical category outplayed and behind.

Senior Ali Haidar led the team in points with 19 and teammate Matt Esters following behind with 13.

Ending the first half with a one point lead, the Huskies kept the game close in the final minutes. Haidar made a pair of free throws that put

the game at 53-52 in the final minutes of the game, but the Wildcats rallied and overcame in the Huskies.

Returning home, the Huskies will play the Bulldogs in the first game of the Winter Carnival weekend.

Sitting at fourth place in the North Division, the Bulldogs come to Houghton boasting a 9-6 conference record.

The Bulldogs took on the Lakers this past weekend, beating them in a close 5958 final. The win put the Bulldogs on a three game win streak heading into this weekend. Kenny Brown led the Bulldogs with 16 points on the game.

The second game of the weekend will feature the No. 3 team in the North Division, the Lakers. In the team’s last meeting, the Huskies fell in a 70-65 final while visiting the Lakers.

Michigan Tech Lode SPORTS Huskies fall to rivals Northern Michigan

14 Tuesday, February 5, 2013 ALYSSA DEBELAK Lode Writer The Michigan Tech Women’s Basketball team played a close match with Upper Peninsula rival Northern Michigan University on Saturday (Feb.2) at Marquette, but they fell short in the end.

The Huskies led at the half 30-18, but unfortunately that changed in the second half when the Wildcats pounced on every given opportunity.

In the second half the Wildcats outshot the Huskies 44 percent to 30 percent. Tech only shot 35 percent overall.

This loss made the Huskies retreat to second place in the North Division GLIAC standings, only behind Wayne State University. The Huskies

now have a 13-6 record overall and an 11-4 conference record.

Northern is fifth in the North Division GLIAC standings with an 8-7 conference record and an 11-8 overall record.

Leading the Huskies was freshman forward Kylie Moxley who had 16 points and 4 rebounds. Sam Hoyt and Paige Albi each had 11 points for the Huskies. Sam Hoyt also led both teams in assists with 4.

Leading for the Wildcats was sophomore guard Alyssa Colla with 22 points, 12 coming from the free throw line. The Wildcats sank 27 out of 34 free throws, 33 of them being in the second half. Tech shot 1522 at the line.

The Wildcats had 24 turnovers; Tech had 14 steals and scored 25 points from

the turnovers. Tech had 10 turnovers and Northern recorded 11 points from their turnovers.

Northern led Tech in rebounds 41-20. Northern tore up the boards in the second half, 32 of their 41 rebounds came during the second half.

Wildcat sophomore forward Abbey DeBruin had the game high of 12 rebounds. Techs’ Ritchie, Moxley and Albi each had 4 rebounds.

This coming week the Huskies will go up against Ferris State University on Thursday (Feb. 7) at 7:30 p.m. and Grand Valley State University on Saturday (Feb. 9) at 3 p.m., both at home.

Puck Drop Huskies take on Alaska-Anchorage in Winter Carnival clash JORDAN ERICKSON Sports Editor

Rewind

The Huskies return to Houghton after a split series at Nebraska-Omaha where they took down the No. 14 Mavericks on Saturday night in a 2-1 overtime thriller.

Friday night the Huskies weren’t so lucky. Fighting back after a two-goal deficit, the Huskies were unable to close the gap completely and fell in a 4-3 final on the first night of the series.

Saturday night the Huskies kept the Mavericks at bay heading into the second period with the game tied at 0.

Just over a minute into the second period, Husky forward David Johnstone and linemate Alex Petan rushed towards the Maverick’s netminder in a two-on-one.

Accepting a pass Johnstone netted the puck in the upper corner for his eighth goal of the season.

The Mavericks retaliated with a goal of their own before the close of the second period. Neither team was able to seal in a win before the end of regulation and the final game of the weekend headed into overtime.

At the 2:56 mark into the extra time, senior forward Mikael Lickteig scored the final goal of the game, giving the Huskies their fifth goal of the season and two points on the weekend.

The Seawolves

sit at last place in the WCHA with only one win on the season. Falling on hard times, the last time the Seawolves left the ice ahead was on Dec. 1 in a 3-1 win over St. Cloud State.

The Seawolves hosted Colorado College this past weekend where the teams skated to ties both nights.

Friday night the Seawolves napped a three-game losing streak, getting their fifth tie of the season in a 2-2 final.

Saturday night the Seawolves gained a 2-0 lead, but were unable to hold on, and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Leading the Seawolves in the points column is freshman

forward Blake Tathell who has 18 points in the season (six goals, 12 assists). Time in the net has been largely split between juniors Chris Kamal and Rob Gunderson. Chris Kamal skated in the overtime thrillers this past weekend for the Seawolves.

The Huskies

Earning a much needed win over the weekend, the Huskies skate into Winter Carnival weekend on a positive note looking to add two more wins to their season. Sitting at third from the bottom in the WCHA, the Huskies need all points possible as the season draws closer to a close.

Alex Petan continues to be a huge points leader for the Huskes. The freshman forward netted a goal this past weekend, bringing his total up to eight goals and 14 assists so far this season.

Pheonix Copley continues to anchor the Huskies in net.

The freshman has started the past eight games for Black and Gold.

Who’s Hot

David Johnstone netted two of the Huskies five goals this weekend. The sophomore brought his point total up to 20 (eight goals, 12 assists) after his performance in Omaha. Pheonix Copley has

been the stronghold in net for the Huskies and continues to be a rock in net.

Puck Drop

Rolling back into town with their momentum gained from the weekend the Huskies are well poised to overtake the struggling Seahawks.

With strong leaders pulling through for the Huskies such as Petan and Johnstone, the Huskies are putting on the offensive pressure necessary to win games.

Friday night’s game is at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday night’s game is at 5:07 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the SDC ticket office.

Beards Competition

The last month of the year, clean-shaven competitors select three different categories for competition (beards, goatees and sideburns). For the next two months, the competitors grow the best facial hair they can. At the competition, the competitors try to wow the judges with a combination of costumes, songs, skits and more.

Each Carnival, campus organizations prepare and present skits with college humor, following the Carnival theme. This year’s overall scoring will be half from the judges panel and half from the audience.

The brothers of Beta Sigma Theta are hosting an outdoor concert located in their own front yard with live DJs, Groove MQT. Come check out the party, ice bar and get a t-shirt!
