Students’ big hearts make the move easier NICOLE IUTZI Lode Writer Michigan Tech students are again volunteering their time, now at end of their Spring Break, to help out the local Houghton community.

Over the weekend, students assisted residents of Heritage Manor in moving their belongings back into their homes.

After a fire blazed in August of 2012, Heritage Manor underwent construction as rooms were repaired and renovated. Many residents were displaced from their apartments following the fire and now they are able to return to their remodeled homes.

A total of 43 people will be

moving back into Heritage Manor, 20 of whom returned with the help of student volunteers on Saturday, March 16 and Monday, March 18.

Standathon is a great way for students to give back to the community. The entry fee is $10 for food, activities and a breakfast in the morning.

Once students pay that fee they can come and go as they please. For $15, students get the food, activities and breakfast as well as a t-shirt.

For $20, students are entered for a chance at the grand prize. This year, the grand prize is a nexxus 7 tablet.

Local bakery and pasty shop Roy’s is relocating

ERIKA VICHCALES Lode Writer After twelve years of business at their current Sharon Avenue location, Roy’s Pasties and Bakery Inc. is moving to a property near the Portage Canal that will be beneficial for the company and the community.

This move is a big step for Roy’s, as they will be transitioning from a leased property to a building

Roy’s will also be seeing another move- to a national scale.

Eventually, pastyenthusiasts will be able to order Roy’s Cornish delight online and have it delivered to their door, no matter where they are in the country.

The new space will be reutilized where it can be, but plans are in the works to add new features. The two residential units upstairs of the building will add to the amount of indoor seating available. “We aim to have 60 indoor seating capacities and will be moving to a 6,600 square foot, two story unit,” said owner Trisia Kappler.

With all of the new space being added, pasty and baked goods production should triple. The company will begin to use vertical cooking instead of horizontal, which means where there was once room for one pan, there will now be room for fifteen.

With the business expanding, this is a very exciting time for Roy’s Pasties and Bakery Inc. With the construction underway, one can expect to see their new store sometime this upcoming fall.

“Our pasties will be more accessible for students due to later hours and being closer to campus,” said owner Roy Narhi.

Roy’s also has plans to expand their sandwich menu. The shop will be open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. and possibly later during the summer months.

New tuition structure undergraduate students will be paying a flat rate for any amount of full time credits, from 12 to 18, starting in the Fall of 2013.

The idea behind this new plateau structure is that students pay per credit hour up to 11.5 hours. Once students enroll full time at 12 credits, the rate goes up to a figure close to the current 15 credit-hour price, staying there until students reach a credit load of 19 (or higher).

Since the average number of credit hours students were enrolled in during Fall 2012 was 14.6, the University feels as though the new 15-credit flat rate structure will accommodate most students.

Other undergraduate universities that use the plateau tuition structure include the University of Michigan, University of Minnesota and Northern Michigan University.

Student feedback here has been mixed. After Cook’s first email about the proposal of a new tuition structure went out to the student body last May, he said, “about twothirds of the responses were wildly supportive.”

For example, John Weston, second year environmental engineer, says that “it’s nice,” because he has to take over 15 credits for the rest of his time at Tech. Sophia Bainbridge, also a second year environmental engineer, thinks that it benefits students taking over 15 credits “because it has the potential to save students a lot of money.”

However, Cook, as well as President Glenn Mroz, recognize that this structure will not benefit everyone.

“Students have told us of extenuating circumstances that they have in the transition from per credit to plateau for scheduling,” Mroz

said.

He adds that upperclassmen have issues with it because they have already planned a lighter load in their last year so they can work on senior design projects or focus on job searching.

In addition, Cook recognizes that student athletes will also be negatively affected since they have to balance their time between practice and academics and therefore take a lighter course load.

Students who may not want to take over 15 credits for certain reasons like having jobs or simply not wanting a large course load, are not benefited either. Bainbridge addresses this as well, saying that “it could encourage students to take more than they can handle in the sake of saving money,” which will ultimately add more stress to students.

None of these circumstances come as a surprise to either Mroz or Cook, or anyone else who aided in the decision process to make the change to the plateau structure. Mroz addressed these issues by emphasizing that they are working on “mitigating the transition issues to accommodate people as best we can.”

In the end, Cook, Mroz and the rest of the executive team, the dean of students and the Board of Control hope the plateau structure will motivate students to graduate sooner and try new things along the way.

In terms of schoolwork, it will allow tenacious students to take up to an 18-credit course load without worrying about paying anything over the current 15-credit rate.

Undergraduate Research Expo 2013: enlightening, inspiring and enjoying NICK BLECHA Pulse Editor The Michigan Tech Honors Institute, in collaboration with the Admissions Department, is organizing the 2013 Undergraduate Research Expo (URE) on Friday, March 22 (Spring Preview Day Weekend) in the Rosza Lobby. This Expo will provide an excellent platform for the researchers to present posters of their work; both to get practice presenting and to show other students some of the

interesting projects that they could get involved with.

With the Undergraduate Expo’s focus on Enterprise and Senior Design, all Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) awardees were left without a high traffic event to present their work. So, the Institute expanded its support for undergraduate researchers from its own members to the University as a whole by creating this venue.

There will be 21 undergraduate students from 10 different

departments and schools who will be participating in the event. The posters will be on display in the Rosza lobby from 3 p.m. on March 22 to noon on March 23 and presenters will be standing by to answer the questions of all inquisitors from 3-5 p.m. on March 22.

The Michigan Tech Faculty and Staff will evaluate the presentation and posters.

There is a sponsorship up to $25 for printing of posters.

Moreover, for the best three posters, prizes of $200, $150 and $100 will be awarded, respectively.

The URE is sponsored this year by the VP of Research and the prizes are sponsored by the Provost. Future UREs will be funded through a Scholarship Raffle, which the Honors Institute is developing to benefit undergraduate research.

For students, this event will be a great way to connect with researchers in their department or field of interest. It will also showcase some of the cool things that undergraduates get to work on in the labs. Finally, the posters will be highly educational and will provide

insight into how knowledge is taken out of the classroom and applied to the real world. For faculty, this will be a great way to not only see what undergraduates are doing around campus, but also to show support for their work. For the general public, the Expo will allow members of the community to learn some cool science and connect with the students at Tech.

Thus, this outreach event will be enlightening the awesome work of undergraduates and will be inspiring.

Annual Pride Week preview Hosted by Keweenaw Pride, with sponsorship from the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) as well as a number of other organizations, Pride Week will once again offer students a menagerie of activities and events to attend.

Beginning Monday, March 18 and continuing through Saturday, Pride Week is held in celebration of the identity and culture of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer

African Night 2013 ALEX SAARI Lode Writer Founded in 2001, the African Students Organization (ASO) has strived to bring its respective heritage and culture to Michigan Tech and the local community.

Olumide Winjobi, president of the ASO, remarked that the organization creates “a sense of family for the African students miles away from home.”

African Night, a consistent attempt to do just that and rekindle the culture of Africa, is on track for 2013. Started with the goal of raising awareness that Africa is composed of diverse countries and cultures, the annual event uses dances, skits and

cuisine to showcase those cultures.

Two professional artists will perform for this year’s event. Youssoupha Sidibe plays the kora, a 21-string bridge-harp with an appearance similar to a banjo. Ghanaian fashion designer Jennifer Akese will direct a professional fashion show. A play by Efua T. Sutherland will also be hosted and uses Akanstorytelling conventions.

African Night is on March 23 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the MUB Ballroom. Dinner will be served, followed by the performances.

Dr. Jill McDevitt, a sexologist, will give her presentation “Let’s Talk about Sex!” on Wednesday, March 20 at 8:30 p.m. in the MUB Ballroom A. Kevin Boykin, an African American author, broadcaster and commentator, will speak to students about his experiences. After graduating from Harvard in 1992, Boykin joined the Clinton/Gore presidential campaign. Upon

Clinton’s election in that year, Boykin became Special Assistant to the President and Director of Specialty Media. Most notably, Boykin helped to organize the nation’s first meeting between gay and lesbian leaders and the President of the United States. His talk with focus on one of Boykin’s books, “One More River to Cross: Black and Gay in America”, which was first published in 1996.

This event will be held in the MUB Ballroom A at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21.

Friday night, March 22, will be full of dancing as members of Keweenaw Pride will pack

DHH Ballroom with Swing and Salsa music. The music will play from 7 p.m. through midnight.

Pride Week wraps up on Saturday, March 23 as the 13th annual Drag Shows graces the Rozsa Center stage.

A crowd favorite, the Drag Show draws crowds of over 1,000 people to campus, and, according to the CDI website, is regularly the year’s highestattended student-run event at Michigan Tech. Hosted by Keweenaw Pride, this year’s show promises to be the best one yet. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students with their ID.

ZONE How many of you like thrift or consignment shopping? Whether you’re looking for something to wear to the Ugly Christmas Sweater party or interested in bagging that really good deal, some may say the area is lacking these types of retail locations and I would agree… with one exception.

My favorite place to thrift in the area is Keweenaw Consignment in the mall.

I opened an account there so that I could sell some of my things. They price and track everything I’ve given to sell. The owners get a percentage of the price, but who cares! I still get partial credit. Normally, I just use that money to spend in the store! Plus, the variety is so large anyone could spend a few hours in there looking at all of the housewares, books and clothing, not to mention anything else you could probably think of.

Last weekend I was up there with my mom, who also happens to be big in antiques and thrifty stuff.

While browsing the racks, I opened a jewelry box that was for sale and spotted a strange brooch. It was fuzzy.

Upon second glance, it was for sure a vintage antique: right up my alley.

It was a Mink fur Poodle pin, still as soft as it probably was right out of the box. Upon doing some research, I found out it was from the 1950’s. And for $5.99, how could I pass it up?

Whatever you’re looking for, Houghton and Hancock have consignment and thrift shops for you. I hope you find some treasures!

MEGAN WALSH Lode Writer As college students, we are all too familiar with piles of bills and empty pockets. Especially when we move off campus, we are suddenly forced to shop for ourselves and make decisions about how we spend our money. It’s no surprise with our money struggles that stores like Wal-Mart are flooded with college students on the weekends. There we can buy family-sized packages of mac and cheese and Ramen packets for just a few cents.

Convenience stores like Wal-Mart, with their low prices, may seem like a blessing; however, this convenience makes it very easy for us to forget the impacts that our consumer choices have.

About 30 miles from my hometown, there is a small college town that, ten years ago, had many small, thriving stores that filled the downtown area.

However, five years ago, a Wal-Mart was built just a few miles from campus and the downtown turned into a ghost town very quickly. The majority of the family owned stores went out of business as the majority of the population began to shop at WalMart.

Luckily, large corporate grocery stores like Wal-Mart and Target have not yet monopolized the Keweenaw. Considering today’s society, we are fortunate to be surrounded by many diverse, locally-owned stores in the area.

For example, stores like the Keweenaw Food Co-op in Hancock and World Foods in downtown Houghton bring diversity and healthy options to our town. By shopping in stores like these whenever we can, we give our money to community members who we see every day, not already-thriving corporate businessmen.

One of the biggest issues preventing students from shopping at these local stores is the price. It’s true: the prices at small, family owned stores usually can’t compete with the prices at Wal-Mart.

However, by supporting local business, we foster competition instead of giving all of our money to one large corporation.

Competition between stores causes the owners to lower their prices and offer superior service to their customers so that they continue to shop there. So, although Target prices are lower, shopping at smaller stores ensures quality experiences where consumers are valued and the goods and services are fit to the community.

It is understandable that students can’t always afford to spend a few extra dollars on the bare necessities. But, what we can do is spend those rare extra dollars to support local businesses and the community we live in. By doing this, we can help to create a more sustainable, happier future for this community.

“I was having some crazy fun the weekend Spring Break started and I ended up going home with someone. In the back of my mind I was worried about if this stranger was clean, but I brushed it off. I didn’t know how to ask them or if it would kill the mood. Now I’m a little nervous and I wish I would have. What should I have said or should I say in the future?”

I really hope you are because you are so sexy.” It shows desire and responsibility, which are both turn-ons. This should be brought up before going home with the person so that walking away, if necessary, is easier and the letdown wouldn’t be as harsh as if you were already in a bedroom.

Believing that just asking will eliminate the chances of getting an STI would be naïve, too. Some people don’t get tested and are ignorant; others could contract a disease after their most recent test; some people may knowingly lie to you. It seems impossible to tell if the person you met that night is clean or falls into one of these categories.

While it won’t eliminate the risk, asking might make both of you take a step back to analyze the situation.

Even if it means you don’t get laid that night, count it as a blessing. It’d be better to be sexually frustrated than to go home with a questionable stranger for a one-night stand and come home with a disease.

Asking someone if they have a sexually transmitted infection (STI) can be very awkward, but that should not prevent you from doing so. Having sexual intercourse is not something that should be taken lightly, and “casual” sex can have both physical and mental repercussions. That being said, one-night stands happen and the risk of STIs needs to be addressed.

As a man at a school that has historically been plagued by the “Tech Ratio,” the last thing I want to do is ruin my chances with a woman. A major concern with bringing up STIs is that they are a real buzz kill. Talking about STIs is a very fast way to ruin the mood. I would suggest that if you aren’t comfortable bringing up the subject with a person, you shouldn’t be comfortable enough to have sex with that person either. One-night stands don’t give you enough time to get to know someone well enough for that conversation to be conducted casually.

To blatantly ask someone whether they have any infections can come across as harsh and judgmental; and it can cause the person you are asking to make some judgments of their own.

If you are worried that they will think

you are promiscuous, I would suggest you go home and rethink your plans for the evening.

As usual, hindsight is 20/20. I would like to think that I have enough selfcontrol to ask a potential partner if she is clean, but I have also been in the situation before and I somehow convince myself that wearing a condom means I don’t have to ask. I have also had my share of STI scares. A trip to the health department is a great incentive to ask awkward questions in the future before engaging in any sort of below the belt activity with someone new.

Another issue to consider is your partner’s answer. Many people go through their life assuming they are clean because they have no symptoms.

Be sure to ask partners when they were last tested, not just if they are clean.

On that same note, for your health and the health of your future partners, get tested often-- ideally before every new partner. If someone asks you if you are clean before doing anything with you, be honest and don’t just assume you are clean. Honesty is the best policy. Give it and hopefully you’ll get it back.

I only fool around with guys I’ve formed relationships with. That way, I know that I like him as a person and that he cares about me; also, I might have some insight into his sexual history. He’ll likely care about my sexual health and pleasure since he’ll be seeing me again. I can’t know that my body, my pleasure or my feelings are important to someone I just met, so I’ve never been in your shoes.

Still, I think an outside perspective might be just what you need.

I’m glad that you’re concerned about the sexual health of your partners. Many people don’t worry about it. Of the friends I asked, none discuss this with sex partners. They rely on trust and condoms, then hope for the best and get tested.

The condoms and tests are great, but I’m disappointed that they don’t ask. If blind trust and condoms were totally effective, STIs wouldn’t be a problem. It’s incredibly naïve to think that a person who would have sex with you after just meeting you couldn’t be carrying a disease.

The best way to ask would be as a compliment sandwich. I recommend: “I can’t wait for you to get on top of

JORDAN ERICKSON Sports Editor Hockey Husky Alex Petan was named to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s (WCHA) Rookie Team this past week for his

efforts in the 2012-13 season.

In his first season wearing Black and Gold, Petan led WCHA rookies in scoring with 33 total points (15 goals, 18 assists).

A staple in the Huskies lineup, Petan appeared in all 34 regular season games, and had 10 multi-point games

this season. He is the third Husky to be named to the WCHA Rookie Team, with Pat Mikesch and Jason Wright earning the spots 1993 and Jamie Ram taking a spot in 1991.

The Huskies finished their season with a 6-0 loss to the University of North Dakota.

ELLIE FURMANSKI Lode Writer After months of training on the Multipurpose Room indoor track, select members of the Michigan Tech Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams competed in their first outdoor track meet of the season at the 2013 Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The meet, hosted

by Coastal Carolina University, took place over spring break Thursday, March 14 through Saturday, March 16. Sixteen athletes competed for Michigan Tech.

In 2011, senior Melanie Hoffman set the school heptathlon record at the GLIAC Championships with 3,859 points. In Myrtle Beach, she surpassed that score and placed sixth overall in the heptathlon with 4,032 points. Hoffman earned multiple top-ten finishes. Her top performance was a second place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:27.03. She also placed fifth in long jump at 4.87 meters and tied for ninth place in javelin with a 28.48 meter throw.

On the men’s side, Nathan Saliga and Pat Spalding displayed their dominance in the decathlon. Saliga, last year’s GLIAC decathlon champion, earned a first place overall finish with 6,187 points, and Spalding took fourth with 5,859 points.

Saliga placed first in three events: the 100-meter dash (11.40 s), 400-meter dash (49.24 s), and 1500-meter run (4:34.3 s).

Other top performances resulted in second place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (15.95 s) and discus throw (35.04 m).

Spalding placed in the top-10 in each of the ten decathlon events. He placed first in the discus throw at 38.69 meters and tied for first in the high jump after jumping 1.91 meters. Shot put and the 400-meter dash proved to round off his top four events.

Spalding placed second with an 11.42 meter throw in shot put and finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 53.06.

The Huskies competed in two relays.

The men’s 4 x 400 meter relay consisted of Dylan Anderson, Karl Koivisto, Jevon Maddox and Pat Spalding. After a fourth place heat finish, the team placed 22nd overall in a time of 3:30.22.

For the 4 x 100 relay team, Spalding ran first, followed by Saliga, Quinn Parnell and Maddox. They placed first in their heat, 18th overall, in a time of 44.10.

Running in other distance events for the Huskies was Bradon Kampstra, Deedra Irwin, Marissa Yovetich, Jonathan Kilpela, Karl Koivisto and Nicholas Wimmer.

Kampstra represented the Huskies in the 3,000-meter steeplechase where he finished in a time of 9:42.6. Kilpela placed

well in both his events. He finished 16th in the men’s 3,000-meter run (9:15.56) and 18th overall in the 5,000-meter race (15:34.04). Other top performances were

by Irwin who placed 37th in both the women’s 1,500-meter run (4:59.28) and 800-meter run (2:27.25), and by Yovetich who took 38th (20:19.25) in the women’s 5,000-meter race.

Steven Saliga, Jared Berryman and Natalie Berryman participated in throwing events. Saliga took 29th in men’s javelin with a 41.36-meter throw. Jared Berryman threw for 12.33 meters in shot put, earning a 39th place overall finish. In women’s javelin and discus, Natalie Berryman took 20th (33.99 m) and 31st (35.13 m), respectively.

Final events that the Huskies participated in included triple jump, 400-meter hurdles and the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Maddox took 21st overall with a 13.69-meter jump in the men’s triple jump event. He would also place 65th in 400-meter hurdles (1:00.74). Quinn Parnell took 12th (11.06) and 19th (22.03) in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

Competition for the Michigan Tech Men’s and Women’s Track teams will be officially underway next week, Thursday, March 28, at the St. Norbert Invite in De Pere, Wis.

Skiers Compete in 2013 US Junior National Championships ELLIE FURMANSKI Lode Writer Back in February, the Michigan Tech Men’s and Women’s Nordic Ski teams hosted the NCAA Central Region Championships.

Overall, the Huskies placed third, but no skiers from either team earned qualifying positions to compete in the NCAA National Championships. While the Central Region Championships marked the end of all major team competitions, the end of

the season is still a few weeks away. A few skiers are taking the opportunity to compete in various meets throughout March and into April.

Over spring break, four skiers traveled to Fairbanks, Alaska, to participate in the 2013 Junior National Championships.

Three skiers from the men’s team competed in the MOJ races. Thomas Kendrick and Sam Holmes represented Michigan Tech on the Great Lakes Region team while Kyle Hanson skied for NSCF-FXC Continued on page 14

Men’s season comes to a close ALYSSA DEBELAK Lode Writer The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team had a great season with a 21-9 overall record. The Huskies lost in the NCAA semifinals to Drury University.

On Wednesday, March 6, the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team defeated the Northwood Timberwolves in overtime 90-80.

Freshman Jordan Chartier tied the game with 17 seconds left when he sank a 3-pointer. The game had 12 ties and 17 lead changes.

Senior Ali Haidar led the Huskies with 25 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. All of Tech’s five starters, Stelzer, Romback, Armga, Culy and Haidar, scored in double digits. Junior Austin Armga made all 16 of his free throws.

On the ninth, the Huskies fell to the Findlay Oilers 54-51 in a very exciting match. At the half the Huskies were down 31-19, and came back in the second half with a 50-49 lead, but they couldn’t hold the lead. Findlay made two free throws in the last four seconds; Tech responded with a 3-pointer by Ali Haidar, but it did not go in.

Sophomore, Ben Stelzer led the Huskies with 20 points.

Haidar supported the team with 10 rebounds.

Chartier had three assists.

On Saturday March 16, the Huskies beat UW-Parkside Rangers 86-75 in Springfield, Missouri at the NCAA quarterfinals. The Rangers took hold of the first half, but the Huskies came back in the second to execute the win.

In the first half Parkside was shooting at 64 percent, but in the second half they only shot at 41 percent due to a solid Husky defense.

The Huskies were led by Haidar with 32 points. Haidar shot 14-22 from the field and had six rebounds.

Stelzer had 25 points, including six 3-pointers. Austin Armga had 16 points, 12 coming in the second half; along with six assists. Junior Alex Culy had six rebounds.

On Sunday March 17, Michigan Tech played the Drury Panthers in the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinal game and lost 76-62. The Panthers had a strong offense that our defense just couldn’t stand up to.

The Panthers were led by senior Alex Hall who chipped in 23 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Senior Brandon Lockhart had 10 points and nine assists. Drury made 87 percent of their free throws and 54 percent of their field goals.

Tech was led by Armga with 21 points and four rebounds. Haidar had 13 points, six rebounds and two assists. Tech made 68 percent of their free throws and 42 percent of their field goals.

Women’s Basketball season was brought to an end at Ashland ALYSSA DEBELAK Lode Writer The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team had a busy spring break with three games.

The Huskies had a great season, but fell to the Ashland Eagles to end their season.

On March 6, the women’s basketball team defeated the Grand Valley State Lakers 7156 for a quarterfinal win of the GLIAC tournament. The Huskies had three players in double digits and kept a strong

defense, which contributed to their lead throughout the game.

Grand Valley was led by senior Alex Stelfox and sophomore Daina Grazulis with 10 points each. Stelfox also led the team with eight rebounds.

Seniors Kellie Watson and Briauna Taylor each had three assists.

Senior Sam Hoyt had a great game with 20 points, nine from 3-pointers; she also had five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sophomore Jillian Ritchie had a career high 18 points, nine rebounds, two

blocks and one steal. Freshman Kylie Moxley had 16 points for the Huskies. Senior Emma Veach had a game high seven assists.

On Saturday, March 9, the Huskies traveled to Ashland, Ohio to play the Ashland Eagles. The Huskies lost 8168. The game had four ties and nine lead changes. The Eagles led 41-38 at the half. Tech shot 48.5 percent in the first half, but in the last 20 minutes they fell to 24.2 percent.

Daugherty with 33 points and 16 rebounds. Junior Alyssa Miller had eight assists and 10 points. Senior Daiva Gerbec had 17 points and sophomore Taylor Woods chipped in 11 points.

Hoyt led the Huskies again with 17 points. Veach had 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Freshman Dani Blake had 11 points. Ritchie had four assists.

On Saturday Mar. 16 the Huskies season came to an end when they lost to the Ashland Eagles again, 67-54.

The Huskies had a great season with a 21-9 overall record.

This was the last game seniors Veach and Hoyt will play for the Huskies.

The Eagles were again led

by Senior Kari Daugherty with 32 points and 13 rebounds.

Gerbec had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Miller had four assists. Ashland made 16 of 20 free throws. They were 48 percent from the floor.

The Huskies stayed with the Eagles through the first half, but couldn’t pull through in the end.

Husky hockey falls in first round of WCHA playoffs JORDAN ERICKSON Sports Editor Husky hockey fell in the first round of WCHA playoff action when they went 1-2 against the University of North Dakota to close the 92nd season of play. Play began Friday night in the best-of-three series began in Grand Forks, Mich.

Freshman netminder Jamie Phillips made his fourth start of the season for the Huskies in the first night of playoffs.

The Huskies fell to a 2-1 deficit in the first period they could never overcome, falling in a 5-3 final to the host team.

Saturday night the Huskies came out in full force, trying to hold on to their season.

After a scoreless first period, Tanner Kero got the Huskies on the board first making the game 1-0 in favor of Black and Gold. North Dakota found their way on the board

late in the third, but another goal from C.J. Eick would secure a 2-1 win and force a game three.

Sunday night the Huskies couldn’t find their footing,

letting in four second period goals as the game continued to slip away. Pheonix Copley made 38 saves in the effort, and Alex Petan led the Huskies with four shots on

“Three games in three days is tough, especially with a young team. They’ve got an experienced group of seniors that carried them,” said head coach Mel Pearson of North Dakota.

The Huskies say goodbye to seven seniors including defenseman Tommy Brown, goaltender Kevin Genoe, forward Mikael Lickteig, defenseman Carl Nielsen, forward Aaron Pietila, forward Chad Pietila and defenseman Steven Seigo.

“One thing to look at with a group of seniors is if they left the program in a better place than when you came,” said Pearson. “Without a doubt this group has done that. They did a lot of good things this season and in their careers.”

On the women’s side, Ruth Oppliger represented the Copper Country Ski team on the Great Lakes Region team and competed in the FOJ races.

The first events took place on Monday, March 11, at Birch Hill in Fairbanks. In the men’s 10-kilometer freestyle race, Kyle Hanson posted a top-25 finish, placing 24th overall in 27:56. Kendrick’s 33rd place finish (28:14) was only 1:40.4 behind the first place

finisher. Sam Holmes came in 80th (29:35). In the women’s 5-kilometer freestyle, Oppliger took 95th in a time of 18:17.

3x3.3-kilometer classic relays followed on Tuesday, March 12.

Hanson’s Alaska region team finished fifth out of 21 MOJ relay teams in a time of 29:09.

Hanson skied his leg of the race in 9:39. Kendrick and Holmes’ Great Lakes team placed 18th in a time of 31:56. The two skied the 3.3-k course in nearly identical times. Kendrick

finished in 9:48 and Holmes finished in 9:52. In the women’s FOJ 3 x 3.3-kilometer classic relay, Oppliger’s Great Lakes region team placed ninth out of 14 teams in a time of 36:37.

Oppliger skied the course in 13:31.

In Thursday’s (March 14) freestyle sprint races, Hanson was the only one out of the four skiers to advance into one of the final heats. He placed sixth in the B Final, 12th overall, with a time of 2:52. Kendrick,

Holmes and Oppinger were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of their respective races.

The final events of the 2013 US Junior Nationals were the men’s 15-kilometer and women’s 10-kilometer mass start classic races. In the MOJ race, Kendrick and Hanson both made top-20 finishes.

The two finished back-to-back with Kendrick placing 17th (46:37) and Hanson in 18th (47:01) overall. Holmes did not finish. Oppliger placed 30th in

the women’s 10-k in a time of 42:22.

Overall, Hanson contributed to the Alaska region team’s first place finish for the Alaska Cup with 1093 points. The Great Lakes region team placed eighth with 150 points. Points were tabulated from Monday’s 5k/10k free, Tuesday’s classic relays and Thursday’s sprints.

The Huskies will next compete April 4, at the US Distance Nationals/SuperTour Finals in Truckee, Calif.

With Oliveros sitting out this match, Nick Kremkow stepped in at No. 2 doubles with Yumuang, and the singles lineup shifted up one position with Andrew Kremkow stepping in at No. 6. The Huskies edged St. Joseph 2-1 in doubles after winning the top two flights 8-4 and 8-6. Konarske/Andrew Kremkow lost at No. 3 by 8-1.

GLIAC action returns this weekend (March 23/24) as the Huskies travel downstate to take on Grand Valley State and Ferris State. Both Grand Valley and Ferris stand 3-0 in the GLIAC. The Huskies remain 3-1 in the conference, 12-4 overall.

GLIAC play ended for the Michigan Tech Women’s Tennis team back in October after the team finished out their fall season with a 4-10 conference record, 7-10 overall. The Huskies finished 11th in the conference, just three spots shy from making an appearance in the GLIAC Conference Tournament.
