This past Saturday, Michigan Tech hosted its first ever TEDx Talk. As an independently organized TED event (indicated by the “x” after it’s title), the talks were successful in the eyes of the campus community. A TEDx Talk is a series of live speakers who come and talk to a group about a variety of topics ranging from leadership to charity. The speakers of TEDx Houghton included Sara Salo, Dr. Timothy Scarlett, Michigan Tech alumni Grant Cox and Tim Gallaway, to name a few. Sara Salo is the founder of the School Food Tour, a 5,000 mile solo bike tour with the purpose of talking to students and communities about making healthy changes in their lives and schools. While bicycling across the country, Salo speaks to thousands of students and conducts community outreach events. She currently works as the Health Education Coordinator at the Western UP Health Department. Salo also chairs the Houghton and Hancock Bicycle and Pedestrian

Tim Gallaway, self-described kayak addict, was also among the speakers. Gallaway embarked on a solo kayak expedition in May of 2012 after graduating from Lake Superior State University with a Mechanical Engineering degree. The trip encompassed many miles, taking him from the Great Lakes to historic routes in Canada, among others. According to the TEDx website’s Continued on page 5
