Paczki Throwdown bring Fat Tuesday Celebration to campus AUTUMN CHANNEY Lode Writer Ladies and gentleman, Alpha Phi Omega (APO), the co-ed service fraternity of Michigan Tech, has successfully hosted the first ever Paczki Throwdown! March 4, or Fat Tuesday, is a celebratory day meant to be a last chance to eat your fill before Lent. By inviting everyone to stuff their faces, APO filled the bellies of the contest participants this year.

Roy’s Bakery and Industrial Graphics, both of Houghton, supported the event, contributing to a $250 prize package to the winner of the contest. Roy’s was happy to supply all the paczkis, which are a traditional Polish pastry, similar to an American doughnut.

In total, approximately 10,000 calories were consumed for Fat Tuesday at Michigan Tech.

APO was fortunate to have a registration list of approximately 18 people, especially with the contest taking place during a week when many exams are held. Only a few participants were unable to make it.

This organization wanted to do something different for Fat Tuesday since campus does not normally have events planned to celebrate the holiday.

A peek into the past of Michigan Tech’s land ownership Portage Lake Golf Course, Mont Ripley, Ford Research Center and more EVAN MAYER Lode Writer The reaches of Michigan Tech stretch far beyond the 925-acre main campus that is located on Townsend Drive in Houghton. The University has had many other land holdings over the years around the area and even a small campus located in India, which had opened in 2003 to allow students to gain a Michigan Tech education without having to travel to the Keweenaw Peninsula.

The most popular student attractions of these land holdings include the Portage Lake Golf Course and Mont Ripley Ski Hill.

The golf course, located two miles east of campus, came into Michigan Tech’s hands in 1945, when the courses members could no longer support the needs of the course. Tech dug deep into its pockets as the university bought the course for a grand total of one dollar.

Mont Ripley has been a feature of Michigan Tech since the 1930s. It was not

until 1945 that the then- Michigan College of Mining and Technology and the Quincy Mining Company reached an agreement that would allow the university to rent part of the land owned by the Quincy Mining Company, this allowed the hill to expand.

Until recently, Michigan Tech also owned a piece of property on Quincy Hill that had been bought from the Quincy Mine Hoist Association.

When the Board of Control had authorized the purchase in 2005, the plan had been to use the location to build the A.E. Seaman Museum. It turned out though that the museum would end up being built on campus so this land just sat under Michigan Tech’s control until earlier this year when it was sold back to the Quincy Mine Hoist Association. The land was sold back because the Association is more competent in preserving and operating historic landmarks.

Just down the road in Alberta, Michigan resides the Ford Forestry Center and Research Forest. Henry Ford originally founded the town of Alberta in 1936 as it was originally thought to be an ideal spot

for a sawmill that would be used to make wood for Ford’s cars. But as the sawmill was not nearly as efficient as Ford hoped it would be he ended up donating the town

The Michigan Tech Research Institute specializes in advancing the state of the art in remote sensing and information technology for a variety of applications. and 1,700 acres to the school of Forest Resources and Environmental Sciences at Michigan Tech.

To the north of Houghton about seven miles lies the Keweenaw Research Center. The staff here includes engineers, scientists and support personnel who

research possible solutions through a variety of evaluations and analysis, including snow research for their many corporate constitutes, which include both commercial and military clients. Current projects underway include Skid Steer Vehicle Dynamic Testing for TACOM and Cab Noise Reduction for John Deere.

This was also once the location where the winter driving school was held.

Spring break refreshes and recharges SIMENG LI Lode Writer From March 8-11 of Spring Break 2014, over 100 Michigan Tech students and visiting faculties, as well as their spouses and children, went on a three-day trip to Chicago under the organization by International Programs and Services (IPS).

“The job of IPS is to help students, especially international students, be successful at Michigan Tech. And part of being successful is to enjoy their time of school life here. However, because of our location, we commonly hear students complain about the lack of opportunities for entertainment such as shopping, restaurants and theaters, which could be easily available in a larger city,” said Thy Yang, director of IPS. “So the reason for IPS to prepare this trip is to let our students have fun during the break in an affordable way for them.

There are just so many great things to do in Chicago that won’t cost any money,” said Yang.

In order to cut down the costs for the students, IPS worked together with the bus company to offer discounted tickets and secured a block of hotel rooms at a convenient downtown location with a special daily rate of $126 plus tax. The

normal price on average could be as high as $200 or more. Moreover, the hotel allowed up to four occupants for each room, which further helped the students to save more by sharing the expenses.

“We’ve been holding similar trips to other cities in previous years. And we have always been receiving positive feedback from our students. Many students not only had a nice vacation time with IPS, but also came to know some friends along the trips, Yang said. “Some students who participated in previous years contacted us for the trip of this year even months before we started preparing it. Obviously, it’s something that our students would look forward to.”

“Thanks to the efforts of IPS staffs for this trip, I had the chance to visit different places and try various foods in Chicago.

I also met a lot of awesome people and had great fun even on the bus back to Houghton,” said Pachaimani Kawale, a first-year graduate student studying chemical engineering. “It’s my first time to travel with IPS but the experience impressed me. I definitely will go with IPS again and I will not hesitate to recommend this kind of trips to my friends.”

LUCAS WILDER Lode Writer Michigan Tech’s IT department has instituted some bold changes this year, from moving computer labs to the library to installing new printers across campus.

Now they want to know what students think about all of the changes. The IT help desk manager Matthew Watrous fills students in on the details.

“We’re holding an IT Student Outreach Session on March 20, 2014 at 6 p.m.,” Watrous said. “Come and collaborate with Michigan Tech IT. Pizza and beverages will be served.” The location of the Outreach Session is still being determined.

However, Wampler is pleased with the new printing capabilities.

“Now pretty much wherever you are, you can print,” Wampler said. “You don’t need to go search for the one room in the hallway with a printer. I particularly appreciate the ability to scan documents.

more these days.”

IT also unveiled plans for an 81-seat lab in the MEEM, filling the hole left by the former “Fishbowl” computer lab.

Michigan Tech annually celebrates Women’s Day, but by conducting various events for women empowerment throughout the month of March, campus is able to celebrate for more than 24 hours.

This year’s Women’s Month began with a professional dress fashion show on Saturday, March 1 in the Forestry Atrium. The fashion show was organized by the Women’s Programming Committee (WPC), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Women’s Leadership Council (WLC), and Panhellenic Council, among others. Each organization actively arranged what was needed and encouraged students

With that in mind, WPC, SWE, WLC and Panhellenic Council offered a professional dress photoshoot for those interested in putting their best face forward.

Dennis’s main goal was to make everyone look confident and capable. The fully edited head shot, which could be used as a LinkedIn profile picture, was emailed to the participants of the photoshoot within a week.

In the past few years, the U.S. and other nations have experienced a fair share of airplane-related problems, including a recent take-off incident in Pennsylvania.

Also in the news is the missing Malaysian Flight 370, which was last seen and then disappeared on March 8.

Pennsylvania Flight 1072: Last Thursday, March 13, a US Airways plane tried to take off from the Philadelphia airport. One of the front tires blew, causing the plane’s nose to connect with the ground. Passengers were evacuated by way of the inflatable slides on the runway. According to a CNN report, Flight 1072 bounced at least once before stopping.

One hundred and forty nine passengers and five crew members were aboard the Airbus A320. Minor injuries were reported.

Malaysian Flight 370: Many of us have heard bits and pieces of information about the missing Malaysian Fight 370, set to fly to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Two hundred and thirty nine passengers, including a number of Americans. Foul play and possibly hijacking is now being suspected, according to reports from ABC News, Reuters and CNN, respectfully.

The pilots of the plane are now being investigated and search parameters are being expanded to include larger areas of the Indian Ocean. No organized search parties, including the US Navy, have found any sign of the Boeing 777. (http:// www.cnn.com/2014/03/13/world/asia/ malaysia-airlines-plane/).

As March and Women’s Month continue to progress, more events will take place. On Thursday, March 20 in the MUB Ballroom Sandra Fluke, an attorney, activist and California state senate candidate, will lecture from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Fluke will discuss “Women’s health and the Constitution,” mainly women’s

part of the semester as well as their final exams.

“No school work was missed while I had a wonderful vacation for this break,” Kawale added.

Meanwhile, the spring break for most students who stayed in Houghton was colorful as well. Some went skiing and snowboarding at Mount Ripley; some relaxed by participating in various sports at the SDC; some had parties with friends.

On Friday, March 21, the Society of Intellectual Sisters (SIS) will host their tenth-annual Bra Show. Benefitting the National Breast Cancer Foundation, this fundraising event included bra-making workshops in February and March in Fisher 125.

The last workshop will be today, March 18, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. All students, staff and faculty members are invited to decorate bras to fit this year’s theme of “Disney.” All supplies are provided at the workshop.

During the Bra Show, which will take place on Friday, March 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 8;00 p.m. in the MUB Ballroom, all bras will be displayed and donations for the foundation will be collected. Donations can be sent to (sis-I@mtu.edu).

All in all, the spring break is a good time for everyone to take a breath from busy school days and get recharged for being more productive after coming back to study and work. Terrifically Terrible ARIC RHODES Lode Writer Generally, bad movies are bad and good movies are good. Occasionally, however, this system is transcended by a movie which is so absolutely dreadful that it cycles back around into being a great piece of cinema. Five movies in particular truly stand out as being so outrageously bad that they are a delight to watch.

Number five, the beginning of this list of infamy, goes to a movie which has acquired something of a cult following due to the power of the Internet, “Wicker Man.” This is easily one of Nicholas Cage’s most identifiable roles, and it has possibly the most quoted line among these rotten movies with the famous ‘Bee Scene.’

Whether it was made as intended or not, this is certainly one movie which is a blast for all the wrong reasons.

Number four, “The Room,” is a perfect example of why some people should not be given the ability to make movies.

Written, directed, produced and starred by the somewhat mysterious Tommy Wiseau, this movie is known in many circles as one of the worst movies of all time. The one redeeming quality (outside of the so-bad-it’s-good-over-acting) is the cinematography, which is actually decent.

Number three is the utterly confusing “Troll 2.” Despite the title, there are no

trolls in the movie, nor is it in any way related to the original “Troll.” This film is the first on the list thus far to fail on most every conceivable level and it is hilarious in doing so. The entire cast fervently denies to this day any involvement.

“These movies pass the line of a typical bad movie, surpassing these boundaries and cycling back around into being a great piece of cinema.”

Number two, “Manos: the Hands of Fate,” was not made by a professional, as is obvious from a single viewing. The film was actually made by a fertilizer company, as an odd form of advertisement.

Attempting to pull off the difficult genre of a psychological horror, this movie lacks the quality of cinematography which can be found even in many amateur YouTube videos.

Number one goes to the infamous “Plan 9 from Outer Space.” There are only so many words in the English language, and they all fail to describe this insult to the medium of film. Every possible part of this movie fails, from the nonsense plot to the utterly talentless acting. Though the movie warns of an extraterrestrial menace, the only menace here is to the careers of anyone involved in the movie.

Greek vs. Persia: round 2 JAMES WOOD Lode Writer “300: Rise of an Empire” is a movie based on a simple truism: the more fake animated blood, the better. Despite this focus, it also includes some meaningful backstory not included in the first movie.

“Rise of an Empire” takes place before, during, and after the memorable battle of Thermopylae, but doesn’t follow the 300 Spartans, largely because they all died. Instead it focuses on the Athenian army and its general, Themistokles, played by Sullivan Stapleton.

The Athenians certainly aren’t Spartans, but they still deliver in a fight.

Awesome moves and brutal action occur throughout the movie.

The signature slow-motion of “300” makes the action feel powerful and cinematic.

The buckets of blood spilt with every swing look obviously fake, but without them, honestly, the movie just wouldn’t be as entertaining.

Besides being a gratuitous action movie, Rise of an Empire tells a decent story. The audience learns

more about the main villains Xerxes, played by Rodrigo Santoro from Lost, and Artemisia, played by Eva Green from Casino Royale. It reveals their motivations and the demons of their past, and it does a good job at justifying why they are homicidal maniacs.

A good story doesn’t always guarantee good dialogue, and while one can’t expect too much from a movie like this, the speeches Themistokles gives just don’t have the same impact as King Leonidas of the original had. Everything in this movie was said better elsewhere.

Overall, “300: Rise of an Empire” delivers exactly what one would expect: gratuitous gory action, halfnaked men stabbing each-other and a stylized graphic novel feel. However, an awesome female villain and a look at the Persian perspective elevates “300: Rise of an Empire” to a level higher than the original 300 Spartans could reach on their own.

My hike through the Great Smoky Mountains SARAH HARTTUNG Lode Writer Over spring break, a group of 16 students including myself, piled into vans and drove 18 hours to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for a trip lead by OAP staff.

On the way, we stopped by Mammoth Caves National Park to go on a historic tour.

Finally, on Sunday morning, the teams hit the trails to get lost in the woods for four days, carrying everything on our backs the whole way. Since national parks limit the number of people per group for backcountry camping, the 16 of us split into troops of eight to conquer the mountains.

My group scampered off to the 20 mile trailhead to meander around our section of the park. We averaged a little over five miles

per day. The first three days were uphill, uphill and more uphill, until Wednesday, when we had to pack up in the rain and hike seven miles through clouds from Gregory Bald. Tuesday was the warmest, with a high of about 70 degrees, even in the higher elevations, but there was plenty of wind to keep us cool.

Anyone who has camped, let alone backpacked across mountainous wilderness, knows the food can be less than palatable.

This trip was the exception. The meals were ambrosia, though it may have had less to do with quality than sheer exhaustion.

What water we needed we had to filter from streams or springs. Some people pay in dollars for their mountain spring water; we paid in elbow grease.

My favorite part of the trip was the sleep.

The mountains were beautiful, the bears were scary, the weather was pleasant, but

going to sleep soon after the sun set and waking up as the sun peeked over the peaks was wonderful. The woods fell silent at night and everything was peaceful.

During our 23-mile hike, we only saw about five other groups and the backcountry campsites were empty except for us for all days but one. All of the people we ran across were outgoing and helpful, giving us tips on scaling the mountains. One woman warned us of bears rumored to be at our destination (she was right).

Surprisingly, many locals knew where Michigan Tech was and some of our neighbors were happy to help us when we had trouble starting a fire.

On the last day, Friday, both groups went for an hour-long drive from Cades Cove to Hartford, Tennessee for a white water rafting trip down the Pigeon River, the closest thing we got to a shower the whole trip. Our guides

were worried that we wouldn’t have enough water to float, because it is a dam-controlled river, but we were in luck. The water was cold but the journey was excellent.

Overall, it was a fantastic trip. The adventure was worth it, even though the hike was difficult. My advice to anyone who wants to go backpacking through the mountains is to condition like crazy. I thought I was in shape.

Boy, was I wrong. Working out three times a week is no match for five and a half hours of mountains with a 40-pound pack. To make your trip more enjoyable, practice. Take on smaller trips first to build up stamina to be able to scale the mountains like no other.

For those looking for an outdoor experience, check out the OAP’s Adventure Spring Break trips for 2015. The leaders were experienced and well-prepared. Instead of sitting around at Tech or on the couch at home, go try something new with the OAP!

Tech celebrates Dr. Seuss RENEE OATS Lode Writer The late great Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, would have celebrated his 110th birthday this month on March 2.

To commemorate the literary works of

the renowned Dr. Seuss, the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton held a Dr. Seuss Extravaganza on Sat., March 8. During the extravaganza celebration, elementary school-age children were gathered and read some of his most famous books.

participated in the event and read some of Dr. Seuss’ collection for the engaged audience such as “The Sneetches” and “Green Eggs and Ham.” The Circle K International Service Organization emphasizes opportunities which surround service, leadership and friendship throughout the campus and community. The organization pledges to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership to develop their abilities and to dedicate themselves to the realization of humankind’s potential.

Circle K president, Emily Wolbeck, comments on the organization in its efforts in the community, “The purpose of Circle K is to both improve the community we live in and improve the lives of those people we help as well as ourselves. If assisting in Dr. Seuss day sparks the love of reading in a few children, we will have done our job right.”

Portage Lake District Library community programs director, Chris Alquist encourages promotion of these free community events and often enjoys programming different events for children of all ages as well as the adult community.

Greetings readers! I hope you all had a fantastic break last week.

My name is Sasha Burnett a first-year student at Michigan Tech. I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve as the Editor-in-Chief of The Lode as a replacement for Krysten.

Although I was a news writer first semester, many of you do not know me so I would like to share a little bit about myself.

I am majoring in environmental engineering with a minor in journalism. Many people find my desired degrees as an odd mixture, but I have always had a passion for both the environment and journalism.

In fact, being editor-in-chief is not something new to me. I served as the editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper, The Oriole, for two years and have attended multiple journalism camps and workshops.

In addition to my degrees, I enjoy running, hiking, scrapbooking and fellowship with others.

Although many people are nervous that a switch in leadership will hinder the quality of their paper, there is no need to worry. Not only was Krysten an amazing editor, but she was also a great trainer and I feel well prepared to fill her position.

As editor-in-chief my goal is to make The Lode appeal to you as best as possible. If you have any suggestions or something that you would like to see improved in The Lode, feel free to send them to lodesubmit@ mtu.edu.

As many of us here at Michigan Tech are aware, there was a campus wide ban of cigarettes on September 4, 2013. This is part of a statewide initiative towards fostering a cleaner environment and healthier students. For many people this has been a difficult challenge, or more irritating, as they now need to leave campus to smoke in solitude. For smokers this can be a challenge; quitting in general is a large challenge, however, what appears to be another option for individuals are e-cigarettes which are gaining popularity rapidly.

E-cigarettes, or electronic cigarettes, are battery-operated devices simulating the intake of tobacco; they do this by using a heating element that vaporizes the liquid within the cigarette. The liquid is dependent upon the company that produces the electronic cigarettes and can contain combinations of different ingredients such as nicotine or flavorings.

So, how good are these e-cigarettes for people?

The precise effects of electronic cigarettes are not yet known, however, they can provide a slightly less addictive alternative to regular cigarettes for many smokers. (If you use less nicotine containing liquids).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are approximately 42.1 million people in the United States who currently smoke cigarettes. We do not need to be informed of the adverse health effects that this has on human bodies, but many of those who do smoke have an incredibly difficult time attempting to quit.

For those who are interested in smoking cessation, e-cigarettes are a good option for the transition between heavy nicotine consumption and reduction. It is important to point out that neither of which are healthy for our hearts and lungs, but there are some who would settle for the cigarettes with fewer toxins if given the opportunity.

Are bans on cigarettes applicable to bans on e-cigarettes? This I believe is debatable, and should be addressed by those with power

in places even such as Michigan Tech. The amount of people using e-cigarettes is growing as they gain popularity. Personally, I feel that the decrease in smoke created and lack of odor from regular cigarettes is enough to allow the use of e-cigarettes on campus grounds. Many of the concerns that come from those who do not choose to smoke is that they had to walk through the clouds outside of class buildings; this has significantly reduced since the smoking ban was implemented back in September.

The primary concern for many is whether or not these e-cigarettes should be used within public buildings. To be completely honest, the first time I ever had the chance to see an e-cigarette was in Dillman, and I was caught completely off guard.

I was opposed to the ban of cigarettes on campus because the amount of people actually smoking was not very high, however, smoking inside buildings has been outlawed for a very long time now and as we do not yet know the full effects of electronic cigarettes I believe it is incredibly unwise to trust that technology indoors.

Michigan Tech’s National Society of Black Engineers group visited middle and high schools in the Detroit area to connect with students and increase awareness of the wealth of opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Net-Neutrality: should students expect increase in Netflix costs?

KATHERINE BAECKEROOT Lode Writer The Internet has made great strides in regard to its availability to users all across the globe and to different classes of people. We are now a global community, interconnected in ways that we could never have imagined.

With access to movies, television shows, YouTube videos, shopping and other social media sites the capabilities we have as users and content editors on the Internet are enormous.

Unfortunately, with technology such as this, it lends itself conducive to disparities in treatment, knowledge and access priority. Many are aware that technology is inaccessible by individuals in specific contexts for monetary or cultural reasons; however, a concept that has been given extra hype recently is net-neutrality and the impact this has on our media-based lives.

Net neutrality is the premise that web

service providers and governments treat data on the Internet equally, where charges are not discriminatory or exclusive to specific groups or companies and that preferential treatment is not given to individual media content providers.

Unfortunately this idea of equality on the Internet has been a short-lived experience, particularly in relation to how long it has actually been around. We are now going through a cultural shift in terms of how the Internet is managed and who receives the best access.

Last week, Comcast created a deal with Netflix for faster more reliable Internet.

Many are skeptical of the outcome for this type of situation. For one, this will foster a much more competitive business environment.

Personally, I feel that this will lead towards the inability of companies to compete, develop monopolies and anger a lot of customers definitely not wanting to see an increase in prices.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek Technology, a third of Internet traffic is in the responsibility of Netflix. In addition, Comcast purchased Time Warner Cable which potentially gives Comcast a share of up to 60 percent of the national broadband market. Within the next few months numerous other companies will be undergoing major changes in order to

survive in the changing market.

So what does this mean for college-age students and in particular Michigan Tech students?

Well, as many students spend their time relaxing watching shows on Netflix it is

Regardless of whether or not you believe the deregulation of net equality will bring positive or negative benefits to Internet users, it will undoubtedly result in many changes in the current ways we function with our media content.

Deregulation is beneficial for big businesses; however, as history has represented, the masses suffer as a result of corporate influence and manipulation.

Taylor Driscoll, undergraduate student and President of NSBE, hopes students will realize engineering is fundamental in advancing technology and is happy to give younger students the opportunity to get involved.

I think this is a perfect opportunity to reach out to youth who are unaware they can study rewarding majors and make a difference.

Through the School of Business and Economics, students are spending their Spring Break in California, visiting San Francisco and Silicon Valley to visit

businesses where Michigan Tech alumni work, like Google and Netflix, and connect with professionals in their fields of study.

What a networking extravaganza for someone who is looking to accomplish much in their career.

If you still intend on going home next Spring Break, you could volunteer at some local effort such as doing a research project for your local museum. If you’re staying in Houghton, the Copper Country Humane Society always needs friendly faces to come visit the cats and dogs.

Several other on-campus student

organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Good Shepard Lutheran Campus Ministry offer other alternative Spring Break opportunities. I love the possibilities Michigan Tech students have to grow oneself and give back to the community over Spring Break.

It can be a humbling and rewarding experience to empower one high school student to take their studies seriously or help someone less fortunate in any way. I think every student should give an alternative Spring Break a shot.

Inequality no more JOE ANDRES Lode Writer

A commonly held belief is men will make more money doing the exact same job as women. However, a new study published by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) found that this assumption is no longer the case.

The study concludes that across all disciplines, women on average still make 6.6 percent less than men. This income disparity is considered to be statistically insignificant. The study continues, stating, the disparity between people who negotiate more aggressively on salary and those that do not is comparable to the disparity in salary between men and women.

Based on this data the AAUW suggests that the lingering income inequality between men and women may be primarily due to women being less aggressive as a group in salary negotiations than men.

Historically women have been horribly underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering. Evidence of this is clear here at Michigan Tech with the ratio of men to women here being three to one.

As these professions, like engineering, have traditionally been considered a “boy’s club,” many women assume they will be paid less and command less respect in these jobs.

This assumption is not correct at all.

The AAUW found that there is no pay difference between genders in these fields at all. In an effort to attract more women with degrees in the fields of science and engineering, some women are being offered higher introductory salaries than their male coworkers.

If equitable salary is not enough for more women to become scientists and engineers, perhaps better opportunities for advancement is. New studies are being published that suggest that women are generally being promoted at a faster rate than their male coworkers.

The assumed reasoning behind this is with more women in management, companies will be able to attract even more female candidates.

Michigan Tech is also a good example of the changing landscape in the technical world. This year’s incoming freshman class had one of the highest percentages of women to men in the University’s history. The incoming class next year appears to also have a much higher than average female percentage than has been common for Tech in the last few years.

Hopefully this trend will continue and Michigan Tech will become one of the first engineering schools with as many women on campus as men.

ELLIE FURMANSKI Sports Editor Alice Flanders of the Michigan Tech Nordic Ski team was the only Husky skier to qualify for the NCAA Skiing Championships this year. Only the top six women in the region qualify.

After earning points throughout the season at five Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) events, Flanders came in sixth in the CCSA rankings, officially landing her a spot at the NCAA competition in Heber City, Utah.

The junior skier competed in two events.

She kicked off her NCAA debut with a 31st place finish in the women’s five-kilometer classic race on Thursday, March 6. Flanders completed the course in 15:12.9 despite warm conditions with temperatures in the 40s.

Flanders really brought her A-game when it

came to the 15-kilometer mass start freestyle race on March 8. She finished tenth overall in a very competitive field, crossing the finish line in 41:40.2, just 85 seconds behind the first place skier. Flanders’ strong performance earned her an All-American title.

While Flanders did not earn any points for Michigan Tech from the classic event, her tenth place freestyle finish earned 21 points to put the Huskies in 18th place out of 23 teams overall in the competition. Team scores are a combination of alpine and Nordic events, but Michigan Tech did not have any competitors in alpine.

Conclusion of the NCAA competition also brought an end to the Husky Nordic Ski season. Overall, Flanders had an impressive year. She put forward two first place finishes at two separate CCSA freestyle races, had additional top-ten performances throughout the season, earned CCSA Skier of the Week and was named to the CCSA First

Team. She will be back next year competing for the Huskies in her final collegiate Nordic ski season.

Troy Hard wins Broomball Championship JOHN REYNOLDS Lode Writer It was a cold, crisp night for broomball.

The crowd’s breath was clearly visible overlooking the gold rink. Cocoa was flowing, and chants of “third place” by the recently crowned Great Lake Warriors still rang through the crowd. This was the championship game of broomball between Troy Hard and Old Time Hockey.

The broomball tournament started on March 1 with a 64-team bracket. Five wins brought the teams to the final game, which was a matchup between two undefeated teams.

Underneath the lights, despite some shoving and trash talking, the whistle blew, and the championship game was underway.

Troy Hard started the game strong and controlled the ball to start building a lead.

Good passing and timing was how they played the game, and they looked like masters who had been playing all their lives. They scored the first goal of the game off of a well set up play.

Old Time Hockey attacked the net, but Troy Hard’s goalie had good positioning

Men’s basketball makes NCAA Sidelines tournament Championship Intramural Deadlines The deadline for racquetball singles is today (March 18) at noon. Your last chance to sign up for the dodgeball tournament is this Thursday, March 20 at 5 p.m. Finally, there will be a one day event swim meet on March 25 at 5 p.m. The deadline for the swim meet is next Monday, March 24 at 3 p.m.

JOHN REYNOLDS Lode Writer The men’s basketball team entered the Division II NCAA tournament this past weekend with a win over the No. 14 team Southern Indiana. This was the second year in a row the Huskies have made it to the second round of the tournament.

Austin Armga got his fifth 30-point game of the year to help push the Huskies past the Screaming Eagles. Ben Stelzer had 20 points on the day, and Phil Romback and Jason Hawke both scored nine points off the bench over 23 minutes of play time.

“Winning the match meant that the Huskies had made it to their first-ever NCAA Division II Midewest Regional Championship game in the program history.”

Tech’s defense is what really stood out in this performance, however. Tech held all of Southern Indiana’s starters to below 15 points, including a paltry 29.6 percent from behind the three point line. Tech’s 13th-ranked defense really pulled through and helped seal the win.

Tech’s next matchup was against the No. 2 seed in the Midwest, Indianapolis, on Sunday, March 16. Indianapolis entered the match as the seventh-ranked offence in Division II basketball. They came into the semifinal off of a win in the opening round against Bellarmine, a team which Indianapolis had dropped their last two games to.

University. Winning the match meant that the Huskies had made it to their first-ever NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship game in program history. The Huskies improved their season record to 24-7 overall with the win.

After a slow start, junior guard Ben Stelzer brought his A-game in the second half with 32 points. Stelzer kicked off a hot streak with a three point jump shot, scored with just over seven minutes left of play, to put the Huskies ahead 54-52. He went on to score 24 more points in the remaining time, which included sinking all 12 of his free throw attempts.

Senior guard Austin Armga finished the game with 19 points. He kicked off scoring for the Huskies in the first half with 15. Armga also added a team-high nine rebounds.

The regional championship game is set to tip off at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18. The Huskies will face off against the No. 1 seed Drury University. This year, Drury is 27-3

overall. They won their Midwest Regional Quarterfinal game against UW-Parkside 6964 and handed it to Lake Superior State 79-61 in the semifinal game. Tech was eliminated from the tournament by Drury last year, who went on to win the entire tournament.

Between the history from last year and Drury’s home field advantage, this could be Tech’s toughest matchup of the season.

The Huskies will look to seniors Austin Armga and Alex Culy and second highest scorer on the team Ben Stelzer to lead the team in their first-ever NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship game appearance.

Despite the outcome, this has been a historical season for Michigan Tech Men’s Basketball already.

Husky skiers compete at Junior Nationals and NCAA Championships PARKER MCCOLL Lode Writer The week before spring break was a busy one for Michigan Tech Nordic Skiing. Six athletes attended U.S. Junior Nationals in Stowe, Vt., and Alice Flanders competed at the NCAA Skiing Championships in Heber City, Utah.

U.S. Junior Nationals featured races spread throughout the week starting March 3 and ending March 8. The six Husky skiers who competed in the event included Ulrika Axelsson, Sonja Hedblom, Carolyn Lucca, Kyle Hanson, Scott Pederson and Logan Brueck.

Highlights from the week include Axelsson’s fourth place finish in the classic event and second place finish in Wednesday’s classic sprint. Also, Sonja

Hedblom took eighth in Friday’s freestyle event. She accomplished her long-time goal of earning All-American.

Sophomore Kyle Hanson struggled during the week. “I couldn’t perform as well as I wanted to. The trip and experience was still very fun and worth it to ski against the best juniors in the country,” said Hanson.

Danielle Blake of the Michigan Tech Women’s Basketball was named to the GLIAC First Team, GLIAC AllTournament Team and All-GLIAC Defensive Team. The sophomore guard averaged 13.7 points per game, second highest on the team.

Mackenzie Perttu, the team’s leading scorer with 15.4 points per game, joined Blake on the GLIAC First Team roster. On the men’s side, three members of the Michigan Tech Men’s Basketball team were awarded postseason honors. Senior guard and leading point scorer for the Huskies Austin Armga earned GLIAC First Team honors and was named to the Daktronic, Inc. All-Midwest Region Second Team. Armga was also named a Capital One CoSIDA Academic AllAmerican earlier this year. Junior guard Ben Stelzer, second on the team in scoring, was named to the GLIAC Second Team. Also, senior guard Alex Culy was named to the GLIAC AllDefensive Team for the third time in his career.

Tech Hockey Players Honored

Freshman forward Reid Sturos of the Michigan Tech Hockey team was recently named National Rookie of the Month by the Hockey Commissioner’s Association. Sturos tallied five goals and seven assists for a total of 12 points during the month of February, a point total which led all freshmen in the nation. Freshman defender Shane Hanna was also honored by being named to the All-WCHA Rookie Team.

Hanna led all WCHA defensemen in league points with four goals and 18 assists on the season. In addition, the following 11 Huskies were named to the WCHA All-Academic Team: Patrick Anderson, CJ Eick, Blake Hietala, Daniel Holmberg, Tanner Kero, Alex Petan, Jamie Phillips, Blake Pietila, Dennis Rix, Daniel Sova and Brad Stebner.

Michigan Tech Lode

Tennis teams return from week of matches in South Carolina PARKER MCCOLL Lode Writer Michigan Tech’s tennis teams travelled to Hilton Head, S.C. last week during spring break to take part in the Spring Tennis Fest.

The men’s team played five matches and the out-of-season women’s team played four.

The men won three of their matches, losing only to the two Division I teams, George Mason University and North Carolina Central University.

“The men played well all week long,” said head coach Kevin Kalinec. “We really took care of business in all three of the Division II matches, and we were solid all the way around.”

“Really the match that stands out, even though it was a loss, was the match against North Carolina Central,” said Kalinec.

The match was a close one with the final

score 3-4. “We were one match away from winning. Under Division II rules, we would have won,” added Kalinec.

In Division I scoring, the doubles matches are worth one total point, and it’s best of three. In Division II scoring, doubles matches each count for one point for a total of three possible points. The Huskies won the first two doubles matches, so the third match went unfinished. Tech was leading that match at the time.

Two of the singles matches went to three sets, with the Huskies ultimately being edged out both times.

“We were that close. We thought we could win it. It really could have gone either way,” said Kalinec.

The men’s team brought some important lessons back from the trip.

“One of the things we learned is that we can play at a higher level than we thought we could,” stated Kalinec. “Certainly against North Carolina Central as the match

progressed, and especially in doubles, we understood we were going to be able to hold our own.”

Playing five matches during the week put some strain on the players.

“In the match against West Liberty, we were able to rest a few of our players and put in a couple who don’t see a whole lot of time,” said Kalinec. “They stepped up big in those matches, and Bryan Bartelt got us a win.”

The women’s team finished the weekend 1-3. “We were working on getting team chemistry, and that’s really what we got out,” said Kalinec. “It’s a huge thing on the women’s side, making sure everybody has the same focus and the same goals.” The women are currently in the off-season

preparing for the fall.

Coach Kalinec was happy with the trip.

“We got exactly out of it what we wanted as far as matches and competition,” stated Kalinec. “The teams we played were the types of teams we like to play to get ready for the second half of the men’s season.”

Playing two Division I teams also helped ready the men’s team. “It was big that we played those Division I teams as we go into the meat of the GLIAC season,” said Kalinec.

The men’s team plays two home matches this weekend against Grand Valley State and Ferris State. The Huskies will take on Grand Valley on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Ferris on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Gates Tennis Center.

Husky skiers compete Continued from page 13 to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

“It is still a very lofty goal, but I think it’s obtainable,” added Hanson.

Alice Flanders was the only Husky skier to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

She finished 31st in the five-kilometer classic race on March 6.

In the 15-kilometer freestyle event on March 8, Alice finished tenth, becoming an NCAA All-American skier. Alice is the third All-American Husky skier in the current NCAA era. Other All-American Michigan Tech skiers were Kristina Owen from 2005-2007 and Jesse Lang in 2009.

Head coach Joe Haggenmiller was pleased with the week’s results.

“I am really excited about Alice’s NCAAs and Ulrika and Sonja’s Junior Nationals top-ten finishes. They each worked hard and are very deserving of these results,” said Haggenmiller. “They also owe their teammates a debt of gratitude for pushing them regularly in their training.”

Qualifying for the NCAA Championships was tough this year. “We were left with some very good athletes not making it to NCAAs, which is a little tough, but that is competition,” said Haggenmiller.

“We may have qualified only Alice through to the NCAAs, but she had a great week and represented our entire team quite well,” added Haggenmiller. “Her NCAA tenth place was a lifetime best ISF [International Ski Federation] points result for her. Besides being an exciting result, it shows she skied awesome!”

U.S. Junior Nationals and the NCAA Championships effectively wrapped up the 2013-2014 Nordic skiing season.

“I am pretty happy with the season as a whole,” stated Haggenmiller. “Our athletes prepared for the season well and gave it

In the 2014-2015 season, the team hopes to expand on their current position. While the team will lose some of its top skiers, Haggenmiller added that “recruiting has been going well and I think that many of our current athletes are continually gaining experience and confidence.”

In addition, Haggenmiller noted, “We should be able to prepare well for the season, which will include the bonus of hosting the U.S. National Championships at home.”

Huskies end season with 5-2 Troy Hard wins loss at Bowling Green Broomball IAN HATZILIAS

Lode Writer The dynamic and unpredictable season for Michigan Tech’s Hockey Huskies has come to an abrupt end after losing two games in a row last weekend to Bowling Green’s Falcons in the first round of the WCHA playoffs.

After losing and tying one each in the last series of the regular season to Minnesota State, the Huskies placed fifth in the WCHA, meaning they did not get the home ice they desired for the first round of playoffs. With the home advantage in favor for BGSU, the scores for the two games were 2-1 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday.

As this season comes to a close, the graduating seniors bid farewell to the Huskies. Those men include Ryan Furne, Daniel Holmberg, Jacob Johnstone, Dennis Rix and Captain Brad Stebner. They leave the team a much different and better program than it was four years ago.

Now, after acquiring Head Coach Mel Pearson from the University of Michigan and a few years’ worth of exceptional freshmen talent, the team has been able to develop in the right direction and will continue to do so.

Sophomore Alex Petan and junior Blake Pietila end the season tied for points at 28 apiece, with Tanner Kero behind them holding 25 points on the season.

An abundance of freshmen on the team acquired over ten points on the season, as well as an admirable plus or minus rating.

Shane Hanna held 23 points and a plus two rating, Reid Sturos had 21 points and a plus two rating and Mike Neville had 14 points and ended at a plus ten rating. Petan, Pietila and Kero all ended at minus four or lower. The speedy sophomore CJ Eick also had 18 points and a plus 65 rating.

Although the season ended faster than anticipated for the Huskies, they have a lot to be proud of through the games they played and the work ethic they displayed. From blanking Michigan State in three games this season, beating the seemingly unbeatable Ferris State Bulldogs, dominating Alabama Huntsville, making it to the GLI championship game and

holding their own against the Wolverines of the University of Michigan, this team accomplished a lot.

Fans, friends and locals alike are all looking forward to this October when it all starts over again with the 2014-2015 season.

Alongside Bowling Green, Ferris State, Minnesota State and Alaska Anchorage will advance to compete at Grand Rapids’ Van Andel Arena in the Final Five. The

tournament will be held March 21 and 22.

BGSU will take on Minnesota State and UAA will face off against FSU on Friday, and the winners of those two games will face off in the Broadmoor Trophy Championship game. The winner of this tournament is awarded an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey championship tournament.

Best of luck to all teams competing, and the Huskies will see you in the fall.

Troy Hard came back with another goal, assisted by a long shot from their defensive end of the rink. When it was all said and done, Troy Hard went into the second half up 4-1.

In the second half, Old Time Hockey made some crucial adjustments and took control of the game. A more aggressive fore check resulted in the game being played in their offensive zone for the majority of the second half. With a snipe from ten feet out, Old Time Hockey scored and brought the game to 4-2.

After a lot of grinding in front of the net, Old Time Hockey brought the game to within one shortly thereafter.

The game started getting a little more heated after this. A few questionable calls by the ref and a few aggressive plays brought both teams to an intense place. At one point, Troy’s goalie made an impressive save, pinning the ball between the back of his head and the boards. The happiness was short-lived though as the other team started poke checking the ball. Both sides were angered when a penalty was called.

Troy Hard managed to get a breakaway goal after this conflict due largely to Old Time Hockey’s more aggressive fore check. This brought the game to 5-3, but Old Time Hockey wasn’t going to let them get away. After a couple more minutes of gameplay, Old Time Hockey brought the game back to within one.

Unfortunately for Old Time Hockey, it was too little too late. Troy Hard put up one more goal to finish the game out 6-4 and to win the championship. It was a closely fought game and one for the record books as Troy Hard brought the trophy back to the on-campus leagues.

It was an exciting end to a good year of broomball. The bitter cold at the beginning of the season and a bit of thawing at the end caused some problems, but the games went on and another season of broomball at Michigan Tech is in the books.
