Fresh produce straight from campus NICOLE IUTZI Lode Writer Students who stayed over the summer watched the vacant area in front of Wadsworth Hall become a construction site. But for what? Beginning this past May, the project to build a sustainable vegetable garden began.

Since then, Alex Bruns, Tony Hayes and students have worked diligently to prepare the gardens for this school year. Leading into orientation week, the produce in the gardens was accumulating and they were holding strong, and “it started really coming together around then,” said Bruns, Residence Life Coordinator for Douglas Houghton Hall.

The idea for the garden took root in January by a Student Commission organized by Student Affairs. Bruns headed the garden, which took some quick planning due to the scale of the project and the short time frame from idea to implementation.

Through collaboration between the departments of Housing and Residential Life, the Sustainable Futures Institute, Student Affairs, Dining Services and Facilities Management, the sustainable garden project has been a success.

International Student and lead gardener over the summer, worked with the garden every day.

Due to a long winter and frost advisories into late June, an area in the biological sciences greenhouse in the Dow building was used to germinate herbs along with some vegetables.

Robert Handler, operations manager for the Sustainable Futures Institute, took a hands-off approach to the project offering insight, gardening tips and greenhouse space during the early summer months.

All the materials for the gardens were gathered from local businesses. Lumber came from McGann Building Supply in Hancock and soil from Chassell. Seeds came from Erickson Feed, Seed & Pet Supply.

A sustainable approach has been taken for the garden as the supplies are from local vendors; even the fertilizer (straw and goat manure) is from a local source.

No pesticides or herbicides have been used in the gardens. Rather a “squish every bug seen” approach has been taken.

No fertilizers have been used other than manure.

better because you won’t necessarily have to worry about the site prep but just about planting the right things and tending to it,” said Bruns.

The project’s landscaping was recently completed with the addition of fruit trees and wood chips being put into place.

Planted in the front of the garden are four apple and four cherry trees. These replaced the previous trees, which “were rotting, and starting to lose main limbs,” said Bruns.

The garden’s beds are strategically placed in three pods of four, and the trees are placed every-other apple, cherry, apple, cherry, etc. “Leaving enough space to grow and mature, 15-20 feet between them for optimal growth,” Bruns said.

For the winter months, there are plans to sow rye and wheat to hold moisture in the soil. This will also help to hold the soil in place.

As the trees continue to grow they will “provide a lot of shade and we are hoping to put benches out there in the future

and really have more student interaction with it. I just request students don’t pick it, because it is benefiting the greater community by being left there, and then getting infused in the dishes the dining hall provides,” said Bruns.

All the vegetables and fruit will go directly to the dining hall, providing students with fresh, local produce.

“The dining halls contact me with what they want or need for recipes, or they get whatever is ready for harvest,” said Bruns.

Last week, there were two to three cups of basil for a dish that was served.

“So far the produce has been outstanding and I would expect it to expand in the future,” said Michael Patterson, Associate Director of Residential Dining Services.

New stations to help service bicycles have been installed all across campus.

Accepted as part of the university’s 10year plan, the Campus Bike Committee worked to raise funds to support the installation of bicycle repair stations. They were finally installed this past spring and feature wrenches and ratchets as well as air pumps.

The stations are located in four locations, two of which are on the main campus. They can be found near Walker, the MEEM, the Great Lakes Research Center (on the waterfront) and near the Tech Trails by the waxing building.

These locations were carefully considered by those members of Facilities Management who helped make the project a reality.

George Butvalis, director of Facilities Management, and Tim Griffin, Facilities Engineer, were both instrumental in the development and the eventual installation of the bike repair stations.

Griffin was the Project Manager in charge of coordinating with the Campus Bike Committee to negotiate the locations of the bike stations and the design of the

support slabs.

Working with Michigan Tech grounds crew, it was made sure that none of the stations would affect the current activities grounds crews are working on. With the large amounts of snow campus received annually, it was important to take snow removal into account.

Griffin said this was the biggest challenge

Facilities faced. “This [issue] was satisfied by providing removable support anchors so the repair stations can be removed prior to snow removal and replaced again in the spring,” said Griffin.

New Van Gogh painting unveiled The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam yesterday announced that they have identified a new painting by Vincent Van Gogh.

The painting, entitled “Sunset at Montmajour,” was created in Arles, France in 1888, which, according to the article in the New York Times, was “considered to be the height of the painter’s career.”

The painting shows a hilly terrain in Montmajour, in the region of Provence in southeastern France at dusk. It also shows wheat fields and the ruins of a Benedictine Abbey in the background. Van Gogh painted many works in the area around Montmajour during his time in Arles.

Former chief curator of the Van Gogh Museum Fred Leeman said he believed the work is “100 percent genuine.” Leeman is now an independent art historian and Van Gogh scholar based in Amsterdam.

As part of a private family collection for several years, information about the owners of the painting cannot be released because of privacy concerns.

Until 1901, the painting was in the family collection formerly owned by Van Gogh’s brother, Theo. Theo’s wife managed the collection following his death, and sold the painting to a Paris art dealer, who then sold it to a Norwegian collector in 1908.

In 2011, the current owners of “Sunset at Montmajour” brought it to the Van Gogh Museum to authenticate it. Researchers at the museum have been trying to identify it ever since.

The museum recently came to the conclusion that the pigments in the paint matched Van Gogh’s palette used in Arles.

The Houghton and Hancock communities will be hosting the annual Parade of Nations on Saturday, Sept. 14, an event that has endless entertainment according to Vienna Chapin, a member of the Parade of Nations committee. The event will give Michigan Tech students and community members an exposure to food, games and dancing from many cultures from around the world.

Northern Michigan University and Finlandia have also joined in this year’s activities. According to program coordinator Darnishia Slade, this will be the first year that NMU students will participate in the Parade of Nations.

This year’s theme was the first to be selected through a student contest last spring. Senior Stephanie Haselhuhn won the contest, making this years’ theme Global Variation in One Location. As a prize for winning the contest, Haselhuhn received a Parade of Nations T-shirt and a VIP pass allowing her the opportunity to try each cultural food before the supply runs out.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. on Quincy Street in downtown Hancock in front of the First Merit Bank.

According to Slade the City of Houghton will be funding shuttle buses to Hancock, which will leave the Memorial Union Building (MUB) starting at 10:00 a.m. Students can take the shuttle to the start location in Hancock free of charge.

The parade will cross the bridge to station at the Dee Stadium in Houghton where the Parade of Nations festival and major activities will take place. The festival events will begin at noon and run until 3 p.m.

Cultural differences displayed at the festival range from lifestyle, to state, to international.

“We have Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and many more cultures represented,” Slade said.

This year’s Parade of Nations will also feature a float competition. All students and clubs both in the community and at the university are able to enter the competition. Slade says that the best float to match this year’s theme will receive a cash prize to benefit their club.

In addition to the parade and cultural exposure, Slade says that the most exciting part of the event is the opportunity to try all of the different culture-specific cuisines. Chapin agrees, “Bring your appetite to try tasty international food from dozens of food booths offering delicious ethnic specialties, desserts and more.”

In addition to food, the festival will have bands, singing, dancing, face painting, pony rides and arts and crafts, all free of charge.

“One of our big missions is to keep the Parade of Nations free of charge,” Slade said.

The committee has been successful in keeping the event free for its 24 years with the help of the community. According to Slade, some companies that sponsor the event include Wells Fargo, City of Houghton, Michigan Tech, Pepsi, City of Hancock, Walmart and Portage Health. “Our biggest supporter is Keweenaw’s Classic Hits 97.7,” Chapin added.

The Parade of Nations provides a great way for residences halls and organizations to get involved at no charge. “We really encourage students to take part in the Parade of Nations because it is a great and unique way for them to get involved,” Slade said. With so many activities happening that Saturday, it is especially easy to find something you will enjoy, whether it is the food, music or parade.

Dining changes for food allergies NICOLE IUTZI Lode Writer According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2007, three million American’s under the age of 18 were found to be living with food allergies.

Students attending Michigan Tech with special dietary needs, such as allergies to peanuts, shellfish and gluten, will be happy to know that all dining halls on campus are now working harder to make accommodations to meet their needs.

“Because we have seen an increasing number of students with food allergies in recent years, we are trying to make

our menus more allergy friendly by looking at our recipes and ingredients or by using an alternate product. It is an evolving work in progress right now,” said Michael Patterson, Associate Director of Residential Dining Services.

The dining halls on Michigan Tech’s campus are in the process of becoming a Gluten-Free Resource Education Awareness Training (GREAT) Kitchen certified establishment, a distinction given by the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness.

“We are working on training our Dining Services staff in awareness and safe handling and preparation methods to prevent cross contamination,” Patterson said.

The program consists of five

multimedia modules, including courses on proper gluten-free meal preparation, storage and cross-contamination avoidance. Cost for the certification is $200 for the initial login and $25 for each additional login.

“We are also hoping to establish a working relationship with one of the local hospital dieticians as well,” said Patterson. Through the use of these modules, staff members will be more aware and trained to help those students with allergies keep themselves safe while dining.

“We look at our menus throughout the year based on feedback received from diners, popularity of offerings, health considerations, cost and production constraints,” said Patterson. Results of the assessments are used to improve students’ needs and wants.

Currently, every dining hall has gluten-free cereal, snacks and bakery items available. Wadsworth Hall is equipped with a gluten free pantry, which includes a microwave, Panini grill, toaster oven, electric fry pan and toaster for students to make gluten free meals.

“Gluten intolerance has been the dominant food allergy that we deal with, but we are willing to work with other needs as well,” said Patterson.

Food Allergy Research and Education, FARE, is an organization working “on behalf of the 15 million Americans with good allergies,” (www.foodallergy.org/ about).

FARE provides a number of resources for college students suffering from a food allergy, including advice on orienting your roommates or housemates about your allergy, checking ingredient lists and talking to dining services.

“Ride the Divide” a grueling adventure JANE KIRBY Pulse Editor Riding a bike from the Canadian border to the Mexican border sounds like a journey in itself. Racing a mountain bike from Banff, Canada over the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains through Alberta, British Columbia, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico to the Mexican border is a whole different adventure, taken on by some, and finished by few.

Winning the “Best Adventure Film” award at the 2010 Vail Film Festival, “Ride the Divide” is a documentary directed by Hunter Weeks that features the story of 11 determined mountain bike racers who have all accepted the challenge to take part in the world’s toughest mountain bike race.

It follows the athletes as they pedal over 2,700 miles over mountains, across valleys, and through small western ghost towns.

Over the course of the race, the racers who complete it will have climbed over 100,000 vertical feet of the Rocky Mountains, which turns out to be equal to ascending Mount Everest from sea level seven times. Of the 11 that start, only a fraction actually finish.

Some of the athletes featured include Matt Lee, a five - time Ride the Divide champion, as well as Mike Dion, a middle aged family man who is searching for a new route in

The audience is along for the ride during “Ride the Divide.” Although it doesn’t actually capture all the trying moments of the athletes, it shows their honest emotions as they tell stories of being on the trail as they fight to complete the race over the course of just a few weeks.

“Mutt” local film production JANE KIRBY Pulse Editor When thinking of Hollywood, perhaps one of the last things people associate with it is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. However, they may have more things in common than most think. New this year, the UP now has its own professional video production and design company, called Early Spring Productions.

Rick Allen created Early Spring Productions in June of this year, after he came up with an idea for a full-length film only a few months earlier. Now, the cast, crew and Allen, the producer and director, are about to begin filming for their film, entitled “Mutt.”

“Mutt” is based on a true story about a young woman, Meda Paavola, played by Samantha Bach. Meda is a character of mixed ethnicities, half Finnish and half Native American, who is struggling to find her true identity as well as love. Being half Finnish and half Native American, Meda is raised by a Finnish family, leaving her with little to no exposure of the culture of her Native American side.

Then Meda meets Neil, a young Native American man in a nearby reservation, and eventually falls in love with him. This creates tension between Meda’s Finnish background and her newly discovered Native American roots. However, because she is not 100 percent Native American, Neil’s tribe refuses to accept Meda, but Meda and Neil continue to fight the prejudices in order to preserve their love forever.

Featuring local locations, cast and crew, as well as music from Hannah Bethel, a Houghton High School graduate, “Mutt” is a pure, locally produced film. The crew for this film features Michigan Tech students involved in Visual and Performing Arts department, as well as students from Finlandia.

When asked about their thoughts on their first full-length film production, Paul Kirby, fourth year Audio Production major, says “it’s exciting to have a fulllength film in the UP,” a place that seldom sees video production happening.

Allen and his crew discussed the benefits of having a video production start-up company in the local area. “It gives the students and

opportunity to work while in school,” Allen said. It also keeps them here after graduation.

Michigan Tech students interested in working in the film industry would have to leave the UP in order to find places to work before Early Spring Productions was created. Allen’s ultimate dream is to support a film degree program at Michigan Tech.

Filming begins Sept. 21, and will continue through the end of October. Editing should be completed by the end of December and Allen hopes the sound editing will be finished by the end of January. “Mutt” will be released in film festivals in 2014, as well as released nationally on DVD. The production of “Mutt” is funded and supported by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, but Early Spring Productions is still looking for support, as well as student help for the business side of the production. Casting is complete, but Allen says that they are still looking for extras with small parts, if anyone is interested.

Is YouTube making us smarter?

ROSHNI SACHAR Guest Writer In the video, “Is YouTube Making Us Smarter?” uploaded on YouTube, Mike Rugnetta talks about YouTube being a great resource and learning tool in our lives and the ways in which it possibly can make us smarter. Rugnetta is the host of a “weekly web series that examines the evolving relationship between modern technology and art” called “Idea Channel.” “Idea Channel” is an effort of PBS (Public Broadcasting Service), which is a “non-profit public broadcasting television network in the United States.”

In this five minute video targeted to students and youth, Rugnetta begins by sharing some startling facts like “seventytwo hours of video being uploaded to YouTube every minute,” which tells us that YouTube is a very popular and widely used tool all over the globe. From watching a dog riding a turtle to learning cooking and chemistry, there are videos related to all possible things and activities in the world.

YouTube is indeed an amazing resource where people can learn almost anything.

In addition to the regular dancing, makeup and music videos there is a lot more that people can learn from YouTube videos. There are lecture videos by the best

professors in the world in a variety of streams: mathematics, chemistry, economics, medicine and engineering to name a few.

Organizations like the Khan Academy and world class universities from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to Stanford are trying to make specialized knowledge and education accessible to people all across the world through lecture videos and online classrooms on YouTube.

There are videos from other people in addition to the universities and professors whose ideas are very inspiring and different.

AsapScience, Crash Course, Minute Physics and Vsauce 1-3 make interesting videos that make a lot of people more excited and genuinely interested in science, history and even critical theory. Rugnetta quotes author and education expert Ken Robinson who said, “Current forms of public education were never designed to develop everyone’s talents,” and fortunately the educational resources on YouTube, in a way, are trying to meet the needs which the conventional education system does not. YouTube is promoting individuality, innovation and thus has to potential to making us smarter as well.

It seems that YouTube does have the potential to make people smarter and that it is a great resource which can be used by people from different fields to their benefit.

There is a lot of information out there and

it depends solely on us what we choose to watch. The first thought that comes to most people’s mind when they hear about YouTube is probably about the song, dance and the drama; however, there is a lot more than just entertainment to the Internet.

Especially in today’s day and age, with so much competition and struggle surrounding students, these educational resources are all the more helpful. It is an absolutely amazing thing that students from all around the world can learn things from the best people in their field without putting in any extra effort. It is true that online learning cannot replace the traditional classroom teaching; however, it can serve as a big boost to the regular practices and help improve understanding of concepts in our minds. Today, if a student cannot understand a concept in an engineering class, in addition to asking the professor again, they can look it up online and possibly find a video on the same topic from another university. Different people have different ways of explaining the same thing; thus this extensive network of resources is a great thing as it facilitates understanding.

If we can learn to differentiate between the stupid and the intelligent, the senseless and the useful material and not get distracted by the former, we can definitely use YouTube as a tool to learn new things, develop better ideas and expand our thinking horizon.

Now that classes are well underway it seems that we must finally accept the fact that the 2013-2014 school year is underway.

For me this has been a bit of a struggle as this realization also brings to light the fact that I am, in fact, going to graduate from Michigan Tech in less than a year.

That being said, it seems more important than ever to make sure that I focus on my classes and take advantage of all the resources that Michigan Tech has to offer.

For me this starts with learning centers. Although these may seem like a waste of time or just another thing to add to your day, I’ve found that they have been invaluable resources. It’s important to get them in your schedule early on. Although classes may seem easy to handle early on the semester, the workload ramps up fast and learning centers are a great way to help with the learning curve.

Of course, doing well in classes also means taking care of yourself outside of class. I had the wonderful opportunity of joining my first ever Frisbockey team this year.

I had three games this past weekend and they were a lot of fun. Not only did I get to hang out with my friends but I also got a study break outside in the fresh Houghton air.

There are many other outdoor activities that Michigan Tech has to offer.

The sooner you check them out the better as a number of them will disappear when the snow comes which, as I have learned, tends to be earlier than you’d except.

I’m wishing everyone a successful school year!

Syria over Cyrus MEGAN WALSH Opinion Editor Since March of 2011, the Middle Eastern country of Syria has been crippled by a brutal civil war. Since then, the United Nations estimates that more than 100,000 people have died in clashes between their President’s government and the rebel forces that want him out of power. It is suspected that the Syrian government is using chemical warfare against the rebels increasing the pressure on the international community to act.

Following the suspected chemical attack, there has been debate surrounding whether or not the U.S. should act to end the war.

Despite all of the uproar in Syria and the rest of the world, social media websites and blogs all over the country seem to be talking about one thing – Miley Cyrus.

This week I sat down to start my article with intent on writing about the raunchy

and degrading VMA performance between Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.

However, I kept thinking that someone should probably write about Syria and their views on how the U.S. should respond. I decided that I would until I

Newspapers are covering it but we are simply not talking about it. As a society, we need to become more proactive in our government and our community. We need to change our television channels from VH1 to CNN. We need to care about issues that matter to us; that have the potential to change our lives.

Especially as college students, we really do have the power to change the future. There has to be a conscious effort to educate yourself, step away from Facebook once in awhile, and participate in conversations with your peers that matter. Also, instead of dwelling on the negative connotations of their performance, let’s use Thicke’s and Cyrus’ actions as fuel to change how society treats sex and gender stereotypes. What it all comes down to is that it is not about Miley Cyrus, it is about our culture – and there needs to be a change. We all have the potential power to make a difference.

Recently Michigan Tech has been going through a lot of changes, with one of the most prominent being the campus ban on smoking.

Through the combination of societal momentum, such as the state ban on smoking in public facilities, and student demand, the ban was finally enacted last week after nearly 30 years of consideration.

Peach’s Perspective When I was in high school my parents watched, “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” every week. During commercial breaks an actress from the show would lecture them about how important it is to talk to their kids about sex before it is too late. I’d walk by in awkward silence and that’s all I ever got on the subject—silence. I was already having sex by the time they started watching that show, and, unlike the main character, I was smart enough to use condoms. I never got pregnant and I never got a sexually transmitted infection. I did, however, have urinary tract infections because I didn’t know I should be urinating after sex. I had my heart broken because I had jumped into the relationship and into the sex much too quickly. I nearly cried at prom because I was in the middle of a pregnancy scare. My parents’ silence didn’t keep me from the pleasure or protect me from the pain sex and sexual relationships bring. All it did was make the journey of my sexual development more difficult than it had to be.

I realize that to some people discussing

sex is offensive—we’ve gotten a handful of e-mails from concerned parents who would prefer sexual silence. I would encourage anyone who is not interested in the topic of sex to skip over these articles.

However, I hope it is clear that the purpose of these articles is not to influence students to have sex or to provide sexual entertainment, just as the purpose of the K.I.S.S. Club and condom machines is not to make sure no virgins graduate from Michigan Tech. Our purpose is to provide students who are already engaging or looking to engage in sex with information and opinions from experienced peers. I respond to every question we get as if one of my best friends were asking me; I lay embarrassment aside to give thorough, truthful, and caring answers. If these articles have ever answered “dumb” or voiceless questions, prompted discussion between friends or sex partners, convinced someone to have safer sex, or made one person’s sexual development easier, then I’m proud to have been writing these articles. Silence is not the answer, so I look forward to sharing.

To start the year off, Peaches thought it would be nice of us to explain exactly what we do in this biweekly column and why we decided to write it. I wholeheartedly agreed with her.

In this column, I answer relationship questions and give sex advice from the male perspective to the best of my ability.

I think that it is important that this column is written because I grew up in a very religious family that only ever taught me to remain abstinent until marriage. Upon leaving the tiny town that I grew up in and moving to a larger city for high school, I realized that sex is a real thing that happens to real people whether they are married or not.

Along with this realization came another: I had no idea about anything to do with sex or even kissing, but I was pretty good at holding hands by my sophomore year. I figured out kissing with the help of my first girlfriend and went on to find out fellatio is also a real thing that happens to people (I had previously thought it was made up for adult films).

The first several times I had sex, it

was unimpressive. Neither of us knew anything about our bodies and what we could do for each other with them.

I was fortunate enough to stay with that woman for almost 4 years and most of what I know about sex and relationships I learned with her. Since then, I have had the opportunity to diversify a bit and find out even more.

The main reason I am telling you this is because I had several questions that, if answered, could have greatly improved my sex life. Instead, I had to go about finding the answers in a trial and error sort of way, which led to some great memories and some I would rather forget. Peaches and Cream gives you the opportunity to ask those questions in a non-threatening environment.

We have already covered more topics than I would have ever imagined, and the questions keep coming.

I will always do my best to answer your questions with what I know. If I don’t know the answer, I am pretty good at research in this particular field, so I will find out for you.

not against the ban. It’s good for people who have a smoking problem but at the same time, I can understand tobacco users’ frustrations.” It would seem the university may not have anticipated the complexities of campus social etiquette.

Eventually smoking is set to become an offence similar to drinking on campus and public safety will be given the authority to intervene. But will the threat of real world consequences be enough to put out tobacco user’s determination? Public safety is an institute of limited personnel who most likely do not have enough manpower

as well as a more important agenda than rounding up fugitive smokers.

Despite the issue of logistics, this action will hopefully help Tech create a more hospitable campus that is not hindered by elements like cigarette waste and polluted air.

As fourth year Kimberly Grigg said, “I think it will keep the campus cleaner; there will hopefully be a decrease in students smoking in a public place.” While the drive currently supporting it might fade with time, the fact of its implementation will shape future generations of Tech students.

Natalia Lebedeva

ELLIE FURMANSKI Sports Editor Natalia Lebedeva was selected as this week’s featured athlete of the week for her dominating performance in singles in the Huskies home opening matches this past weekend. Lebedeva, a senior, is starting out her second consecutive season in the No. 1 singles position on the Michigan Tech Women’s Tennis team.

Last year, the Nakhodka, Russia, native played all matches at No. 1 singles where she strung together an overall 19-4 record. She also played at No. 1 doubles for the Huskies where she and partner Dujna Imran Al-Sous posted a 13-10 doubles mark. Lebedeva was honored with All-GLIAC First team and GLIAC All-Academic honors for her performance last fall.

While the Huskies as a team did not open the season on the highest of notes this past weekend, Lebedeva contributed five of the Huskies ten points acquired throughout the first three matches of the season.

In Thursday’s match against Tiffin, Lebedeva ran up her opponent 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 for the win, which proved to be her toughest match of the weekend.

Friday, a 6-2, 6-2 victory advanced Lebedeva’s singles record to 2-0 for the season. She and doubles partner Kwang Suthijindawong also dominated at No.1 doubles with a clean 8-0 sweep against Ohio Dominican.

Once again, Lebedeva dominated at No. 1 singles on Saturday in the Huskies’ match against Ashland. She gave up only one game, earning a third consecutive singles victory with a 6-1, 6-0 decision. Lebedeva and Suthijindawong won their doubles match 8-3 as well.

Lebedeva and the rest of the Huskies are off to Ohio for another round of three consecutive matches starting this Friday, September 13, at Malone.

The Huskies will assuredly be confident in their No. 1 singles player come match time with Lebedeva on the court. She will no doubt be a dominant force in the GLIAC this upcoming season.

Huskies Football season from the inside-out with Andrew Clark IAN HATZILIAS Lode Writer With the home opener quickly approaching, third year biomedical engineering undergraduate and wide receiver Andrew Clark gives an in-depth look at what preparation the team has done during the offseason. In addition, he shares what fans should expect from the team in this upcoming season.

This summer, over 60 players from the team stayed in Houghton for summer classes as well as training and conditioning for the fall season. Training for all players consisted of lifting every day, running during the week and skill drills in practice. Receivers and quarterbacks practiced throwing while defensemen developed their skill sets and play making. All of this creates a faster and stronger Huskies football team.

“We have a lot of new faces at receiver and tight end,” says Clark. Despite several seniors graduating and losing an allconference linebacker, the majority of the

team remains the same with optimism coming from all.

Andrew has an admirably positive outlook about the three newly assigned captains. He said, “They’re all good guys, and you can tell they really care about winning. They’re going to push the team to make sure we get the best performance.” The three new captains this year are Chris Mullen, David Russek, and Cole Welch.

The players are most excited to get out on the field and prove to everyone what this team can really do. Expectations for this season are high, the required work ethic has been made clear and by no means will this season be an easy one. In order to improve on the success of last of last season, the team is going to keep pushing as hard as they can every day.

Upon asking what everyone should be looking out for, Clark had this to say: “We have one of the tougher conferences in division II, so none of our games are going to be easy, and we have to take every one seriously. We have a lot of potential to beat anyone in our conference, but we

The theme for this team is high expectations, and the team believes they have what it takes to keep improving through every day of work. The Huskies will open the fall 2013 season on the road against Tiffin this Saturday, September 14.

The Huskies’ first game at Sherman field this season will take place on September 21st at 1:00 p.m. against Walsh.

IAN HATZILIAS Lode Writer Lacrosse is a very popular sport around the country, but it is always hidden from the limelight behind even more popular sports like hockey, football, baseball and basketball.

However, that doesn’t stop the students of Michigan Tech from enjoying this great game.

Spencer Olson is the president of Michigan Tech’s Men’s Lacrosse club. Tyler says the club is very laid back and accepting of anyone desiring to play. Experience greatly varies on the team. Players’ skills levels range from veteran to rookie status. With this broad range of experience, judgment and

criticism on the team is minimal.

Club lacrosse is looking for more people to join the team, and the only requirement is a love for the sport, or at least a willingness to try.

The team holds practices from 10 p.m. to midnight during the week, and, if possible, those take place under the lights on Sherman Field. There are many player names on the team roster, but Olson and the team would like to increase the number of players who actually show up for practices. Currently, there are only about 10 to 15 people who remain regularly involved in the club. Due to membership and participation not being as high as desired, the club is looking to become more serious and driven about becoming a more structured organization.

There are a few games scheduled this fall against Northern Michigan University on the 21st and 22nd of September. The two schools will compete in a four game tournament that weekend. Most games will be played in the spring where there will be an estimated three weekends of travel tournaments.

Olson says that his most memorable moment in the club was defeating Northwestern University’s club team during a tournament. He remembers the opponent being far less than happy about the loss, and the Huskies felt really great about the win.

Don’t be misled by the word “sport”.

Not every club requires intense amounts of running, feats of strength and amazing hand-eye coordination. Club sports here at Michigan Tech are merely opportunities for students to get involved with their favorite activities.

You will find in the directory of Michigan Tech student organizations your standard basketball club, soccer club, hockey club and golf club. There’s also more uncommon clubs, like grappling, competition rifle team, quidditch, water polo and the aquanauts scuba club.

Getting involved in club sports allows students to enjoy a favorite pass time, hang out with friends, maybe blow off some pent-up steam after a tough exam, or maybe even learn something new.

If you’ve never played cricket, gone curling or have always wanted to learn Tae Kwon Do, joining a club sport that’s new to you will allow you to learn and practice new skills in a fun, relaxed environment.

Intramural entry deadlines Interested in playing kickball, flag football or soccer four’s this fall?

The last day to register for these intramurals is Thursday, September 12 at 12 p.m. (kickball) and 5 p.m. (flag football, soccer four’s).

Kickball will be run in a tournament held on September 15. Flag football and soccer four’s will be run league style with playoffs all starting on September 16. Be sure to review all intramural changes for the 20132014 academic year before signing up for fall intramurals.

Away scoreboard The “Away Scoreboard” will feature results from all Huskies varsity athletics away events.

This past weekend, Women’s Volleyball competed at the Winona State Tournament in Winona, Minnesota. The Huskies fell in their first three matches, losing 3-0 to Minn. St. Moorhead, 3-2 to Upper Iowa and 3-0 to St. Joseph’s (Ind.). In their final game of the tournament, the Huskies earned their first victory of the season against Winona State with a score of 3-1.

Women’s soccer competed on Saturday, September 7, in nonconference play against Wis.Parkside. The Huskies suffered their first loss of the season 5-1.

Senior forward Katie Boardman posted the Huskies’ lone goal in the 83rd minute of the match.

Women’s Soccer edges Minn.-Crookston 2-0 in season home opener ELLIE FURMANSKI Sports Editor The Huskies seemed to have picked up right where they left off after an incredible season in 2012 when they earned conference champion status. This year’s squad, which returns many of the starting players from last fall, is looking to be as competitive as ever.

Minn.-Crookston barely had time to settle into the game before the Huskies offensive dominance was felt. In just the fourth minute of the game, the Huskies ran up the scoreboard 1-0.

Senior midfielder Lindsey Van Rooy, the team’s leading scorer, found the back of the net off of a chip shot placed just inside the right post, passed the hands of Minn.-Crookston goalkeeper Lexie Gauger.

Head coach of the Huskies Michelle Jacob noted, “We asked the girls to come out strong, and within five minutes they had a goal. Setting the tone in every game and playing consistently throughout the game is going to be something we focus on.” Mission accomplished, Huskies.

After an exciting and confident start to the match for the Huskies with an early goal, the Golden Eagles tightened up the competition for the remainder of the game, but the Huskies ultimately

dominated possession and shots. In total, the Huskies out-shot Minn.-Crooskston 23-6.

No further action on the scoreboard occurred until the 72nd minute of the game when junior midfielder Annie Dahlquist made a dynamite goal by directing a corner kick from senior forward Katie Boardman just inside the left post off of a header.

High pressure and composure from the Huskies in the second half dictated the play of the game, and the Huskies were able to hold the Golden Eagles to a shutout.

“We moved the ball really well, had some breakdowns at times, but overall for our first game we’re happy,” reflected Jacob.

A mix of players from the 19-person bench went into the game periodically, and as Jacob put it, “we didn’t lose a step.”

This continuity in play demonstrates the depth of players and serves as evidence to strong team chemistry early on in the season.

Moving forward, the Huskies will look to attack more and create as many offensive opportunities as possible.

Out-possessing and pressuring their opponents will also be a key factor in future matches.

The Huskies will compete in two nonconference matches this week. The first of

Club sports at Michigan Tech are perfect for those with casual attitudes toward athletics, as well as for those with busy schedules who can’t afford the time to participate in more competitive sports.

Here at Tech, club sports aren’t limited to the usual football, baseball, soccer, tennis, etc. One of the far less common club sports is men’s roller hockey.

David Walsh is a third year chemical engineering student and also a forward on Tech’s club roller hockey team. The team is open for any hockey player. It is not necessary to be experienced in roller hockey. In fact, 90 percent of the team is experienced with mostly just ice hockey.

An open invitation to all incoming students is out there from the roller hockey club. Dave says, “If you didn’t bring your roller equipment with you, there’s always Thanksgiving break or even the spring semester if you want to start skating with us.”

There are no cuts from practices, but the team decides on a final roster for tournaments.

Practices are held on the evenings of Tuesday and Thursday at the Oskardome, which is about halfway to the popular Breakers beach from Houghton. The team will compete a few weekends out of the year at away tournaments. Past opponents include club teams from Purdue, Cincinnati, Miami of Ohio and Western among many others.

The team leaves Friday afternoons in a university owned, 15 passenger van and lodges at either a hotel or team member’s home, returning to Houghton after a three to four game tournament on Sunday afternoons.

Like many other hockey teams, members of the Michigan Tech Men’s Roller Hockey Club view each other more as family than teammates (see movies such as Goon, Miracle and Mighty Ducks).

“My favorite quality of the club is our team chemistry.

We’re all really close and traditionally live in the same house.

Having a longer drive than anyone in the division makes for large time commitments where we’re all spending a lot of time together,” said Walsh.

The experiences shared on a brotherly-like bonded team are invaluable and provide lifelong memories. Dave’s favorite memory of the team is riding downstate for a tournament two years ago and listening to an iPod on shuffle. “From Disney to Taylor Swift and Ke$ha, we put the Harvard baseball team to shame that day,” reflected Walsh.

The time spent skating on the rink is made more enjoyable by the things done with the team outside of the rink, and that’s something Dave and the rest of the roller hockey club are very aware of.

Events September 10 - 17 Clothesline Project-Women’s Programming Committee

This project is a way for students and community members to speak out against sexual violence and assault. In order to do this, participants can decorate t-shirts with anti-violence/assault messages and/or imagery. The decorated t-shirts will be collected and displayed on clotheslines around campus during a week-long awareness campaign (Sept. 23-27). For anyone interested in decorating a t-shirt, stop by the CDI between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. to decorate a shirt.

9/11 Ceremony-Army and Air Force ROTC

In honor of the victims of 9/11, the Army and Air Force ROTC Joint Honor Guard will be posted at Michigan Tech’s 9/11 Memorial. A brief opening ceremony will be held outside the ROTC building at 7 a.m. The Honor Guard will be present all day and students and community members are welcome to come pay their respects. There will be a limited number of free flowers provided at the memorial, however you are welcome to bring your own.

Parade of Nations-Student Activities

The theme of this year’s annual Parade of Nations is “Global Variation in One Location.” Come see the diversity Michigan Tech has to offer by experiencing food, costumes, music and dance from around the world. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. in Hancock in front of the middle school and will end at the Dee Stadium in Houghton at approximately 12 p.m. The Multicultural Festival will be held in the Dee Stadium starting at approximately 12 p.m. and ending at 3 p.m.
