system which uses smartcards and corresponding readers to transfer information. The current system uses a magnetic strip found on your student ID card to store all of your information. The new system will utilize the MIFARE technology known as Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID), which uses a radio-frequency electromagnetic field to transfer the data. Simply waving or tapping your ID card in front of the reader will give you access to wherever you need to be or whatever you need, from entering a parking lot or retrieving something from the printer. You might not realize it now, but the RFID system will make life on campus a bit easier. Ever been stuck in line at the entrance to one of the dining halls on campus? One advantage of the new RFID system is that it is a time-saver. Student employees would no longer have to sit and
swipe each individual card and watch the line get longer, only watch as the students’ cards are tapped or waved near the reader to enter. Upperclassmen, have you ever tried and failed to enter a building or parking lot because your card is so old and worn? With the RFID smart chip, you will no longer have to worry about wear and tear on your ID cards since the transactions are all contactless. Smart chip readers will even be installed on print release stations, making that hassle into a quick and easy matter as well. Because your Michigan Tech ID card is such a large part of your life on campus, whether it be getting you into the dining hall for food, gaining you access to the buildings where your classes are held, releasing your print jobs or parking gates, they tend to get a little beat up after hundreds of transactions.
