If you live in Douglass Houghton Hall, you’ve probably ventured to the ground floor to use the laundry facility. You’ve also probably wandered through the newlyimproved game room to find a completely renovated space. Beginning this past spring semester, the project to renovate parts of the ground floor of DHH slowly began to take shape. Following graduation and many students’ departure in May, Housing and Residential Life, Facilities Management and students who stayed in the UP over the summer got to work implementing their visions. Upon first stepping foot on the ground floor, it doesn’t seem as though much has changed in the game room. The addition of a complete wall between the laundry services and the area housing the foosball, air and bubble hockey, and billiards tables, however, will now help to keep noise and heat levels from the washing machines and dryers down. In the near future, the vending machines will be relocated, and televisions and furniture will be added. Moving east further into the basement, what once was a cold, outdated space has been revamped to be modern and much more welcoming to student interaction. The kitchenette space now features two ranges, sinks and plenty of counter space thanks to the new islands in the center. The area adjacent to the kitchen used to be closed off with a wall, but that structural detail was removed to make the area more open. The drop-ceiling tiles were taken out throughout the basement to allow the light from the high windows to shine into the room. The gathering area now also features the fireplace relocated from the Fitness Center in DHH. It has been updated to gas burning and is now visible on both sides Continued on page 2
