Bug vs. Bug: Wasps may be battling ash-killing beetles UNIVERSITY MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS Michigan Technological University Five years ago, a Michigan Technological University entomologist set loose a swarm of tiny wasps in the woods around Calumet, Mich. His aim: to combat the invasion of a shiny, green beetle deadly to America’s ash trees.

Now there’s evidence that the wasps are settling in and doing their job.

Though harmless to native insects (and people), these three wasp species are parasites of the emerald ash borer, an Asian beetle that has killed tens of millions of ash trees in Canada and the US. For over a decade, the borer has been chewing its way through ash trees in Canada and the US and prompting fears that these graceful shade trees may go the way of the American chestnut. Andrew

Storer’s team is part of a concerted effort to save them.

Government agencies and research institutions from throughout the eastern U.S. and Canada have banded together to fight the borer, which has been called “the most destructive and economically costly forest insect to ever invade North America.”

Emerald Ash Borers Invade Michigan Emerald ash borers are no big deal in their native Asia, where trees have evolved natural defenses, and parasitic insects help keep their numbers in check.

But in the 1990s, they made landfall in southeastern Michigan, probably in pallets from China, and found themselves in the midst of a massive, undefended salad bar.

Making a difference with open source science equipment UNIVERSITY MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS Michigan Technological University Science can be expensive. But making customized scientific equipment doesn’t have to be. Researchers at Michigan Technological University have compiled economic data on the effectiveness of open source hardware in the laboratory— and the process looks promising.

The new study, published in Science and Public Policy, was led by Joshua Pearce, an associate professor of materials science and engineering as well as electrical and computer engineering at Michigan Tech. Pearce says that distributed digital manufacturing of open source hardware will make science both cheaper and more accessible.

Open Source Defining open source as “free” is too simple. While it does mean free access to papers, downloads and data, open source focuses primarily on sharing knowledge in order to refine and apply that knowledge.

Free, or even inexpensive, is currently hard to come by in research.

“In science, we all have this problem where we pay so much for scientific equipment that it overwhelms our budgets,” Pearce says, explaining that a lot of equipment is simple—mechanically speaking—and can even be manufactured with a do-it-yourself 3-D printer like the RepRap. Pearce proposes that instead of spending millions of dollars every year replacing quickly obsolescent equipment, that money could be redirected to developing open source tools that are “upgradeable and transformable—they will be continuously updated” using digital manufacturing techniques such as 3-D printing.

The benefits could be huge: research would cost less, the equipment would improve each year, grant competition would be less inflamed and educational tools would provide better inspiration and instruction. Outside the lab, open source tools could help spur innovation and diversity in the science manufacturing market. While these big impacts would take time to grow, Pearce and his Michigan Tech Open Sustainability Technology lab did quantify the impact of open source syringe pumps.

Making an Accessible Syringe Pump Syringe pumps are ubiquitous and an iconic scientific tool. Their prices range from several hundred bucks to a couple of thousand dollars, and depending on how they’re used, the designs vary.

Pearce and his group created 3-D printable models—completely customizable—for $97 for a single pump and $154 for a double pump, using open source CAD software and offthe-shelf motor parts. They posted the designs and codes on Youmagine and Thingiverse; within ten months, they had 1,035 downloads. And each download counterbalances the cost of purchasing a syringe pump.

“We know at the very least that our design is more cost-effective than low end syringe pumps,” Pearce says. “You look at our syringe pump, and it’s way better than the low end ones—it matches performance of high end syringe pumps that anyone can build themselves.”

To calculate a return on investment, the team examined the download substitution value. Basically, they took the price of a syringe pump and the cost of manufacturing their own tool design— the difference between them represents a savings. Then they multiplied that savings by the number of people who downloaded the design and made the tool. Pearce and his team estimate the return on investment for this case study is between 460 percent and 12,000 percent.

Not Just Cheap Inexpensive and convenient, however, does not mean low quality.

“It’s one thing to have a cheap device, and another to have a tool you can trust to do scientific research,” Pearce says.

A key point of Pearce’s research is that calibrating open source devices and ensuring quality is invaluable. The problem is that there is currently no way to track that validation.

“That’s where the initial funding comes in,” Pearce says, adding that the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other major funders could make a big difference in improving open source validation. “They can also build a centralized database to house that information—including the code—and make the hardware more accessible.”

Until those databases exist, Pearce plans to keep improving open source tools, one syringe pump and download at a time.

Michigan Tech’s female, graduate enrollment soars

The Glomar Explorer On occasion, talented engineers get the chance to design for the history books. No profession is better equipped to find ingenious solutions to massive problems. One such case took place in the mid-1970s, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

In March of 1968, a Soviet GolfII submarine suffered a catastrophic accident and sank about 1600 miles northwest of Hawaii. The CIA, knowing the tremendous intelligence value of the submarine, established a special unit dedicated to recovering it. Named “Project Azorian”, this top-secret taskforce located the wreck three weeks later.The problem was that the vessel had sunk over three miles below the surface.

To make things even more challenging, the government wanted to retrieve the vessel without it ever being visible to prying eyes.

A team of CIA engineers and contractors from Global Marine Development, Western Gear Corp, and others spent over a year exploring potential solutions, and what they came up with is nothing short of fascinating.

Female enrollment is at a record high, with women making up 26.9 percent of the student body. Female enrollment in the College of Engineering rose to 26.7 percent, and the number of women firstyear students is at an all-time high.

Michigan Tech, like public universities across Michigan, submitted its official fall enrollment figures to the state last night.

University officials believe that Tech’s increasing enrollment reflects the school’s high job placement rate, the $62,800 median starting salaries earned by graduates and a $661,000 return on investment over 20 years.

Emerald ash borer vs. wasp by the thousands. The adult beetles only nibble the leaves, but their larvae eat the inner bark, or phloem, which transports water and nutrients, and the trees die.

Since then, the emerald ash borer has spread throughout the eastern US and Canada, including Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s there that Storer and his team released three species of tiny wasps on ash-borer infested trees in 2010 and again in 2011. All three species, which were provided by provided by the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, parasitize the emerald ash borer in Asia, laying their eggs in ash borer larvae and eggs.

In 2012, Storer’s team returned to the 11 release sites and recovered two different species of the wasps. They definitely weren’t the original insects; adult wasps have a short life span. That means that the first generation had been

stands at 1,521, the largest number of graduate students in the University’s history. Driving the growth are 374 new master’s degree students, a 23 percent increase over last year.

“This is the largest class of first-time graduate students in Michigan Tech’s history,” said Provost Jackie Huntoon, former dean of the Graduate School.

“We have never enrolled this many new graduate students in one semester. As always, this success is due to the hard work of faculty and staff who are committed to providing the best possible education for all of our students.”

New first-year undergraduate enrollment rose 6.6 percent this year, with twice as many new students seeking business degrees. Electrical engineering, mechanical engineering technology and Tech’s health sciences programs in biological sciences, biomedical engineering, and kinesiology and integrative physiology also saw significant growth.

Freshman ACT scores remain among the highest the school has ever seen at 26.8.

Student diversity, including international students, now stands at 23 percent, with domestic diversity at 8.2 percent, up from seven percent last year.

able to parasitize the ash borer and reproduce.

And this summer, funded by $50,000 from the USDA Animal Plant Inspection Service, Storer’s team has recovered ash borer eggs that have been parasitized by one of the wasps.

The team has also set about 200 traps for the adult wasps themselves, some near the original release sites and others farther away, to see if the wasps may be spreading.

Wasps Parasitize Ash Borer Eggs “We know the egg parasite has survived and is out there,” Storer said.

“As we gather more data, we’ll find out what proportion of the ash borer’s eggs have been parasitized.”

As tantalizing as this may appear, whether or not the wasps can stem the ash borer tide remains to be seen.

Determining if they have taken hold and are having an effect on the health

of the forest’s ash trees is a complex, time-consuming task. Storer hopes they will eventually receive support for an in-depth study to revisit previously established forest health-monitoring plots to determine if those wasps are making a real difference to ash trees.

“Sometimes it’s hard to get money to go back and measure longer term impacts, even though the true scientific value in assessing forest health comes from measuring change,” Storer said.

Those measurements would provide critical information for forest managers trying to save the ash tree. “If the wasps are only parasitizing one percent of the eggs, it won’t have an impact,” Storer said. “But if they are parasitizing 95 percent, we can say, look, this could be part of an answer.”

Ford donates $30,000 to fund STEM programs for young women

UNIVERSITY MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS Michigan Technological University At a Career Success Day breakfast tomorrow, sponsored by Michigan Tech’s Presidential Council of Alumnae this Friday, a Ford Motor Company executive and Michigan Tech alumna will present a $30,000 check from Ford. Cynthia Protas Hodges, a 1987 mechanical engineering

alumna who is now chassis supplier technical assistance site manager at Ford, will make the presentation.

The gift from Ford will fund three youth programs for women in summer 2016, all designed to engage young women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Women in Engineering (WIE): A scholarship program and an intensive, exciting week-long look into engineering careers. About 150 young women in grades 9-11 will trek up to Michigan

Tech to participate. Ford funding will provide scholarships for 10 students to attend.

Junior Women in Engineering (JWIE): Similar to WIE, it provides an opportunity for younger women (grades 6-8) to explore fields of engineering through hands-on projects and investigations.

This program will serve as preparation for the WIE program.

The claw latched onto the sub and raised it to the surface through a moon pool beneath the ship, away from the view of passing ships and aircraft.

As a cover, the CIA enlisted the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes to claim he was building a ship to explore manganese deposits on the ocean floor. After two years of construction and at a price tag of $3.8 billion in today’s dollars, the 619-foot Hughes Glomar Explorer retrieved the sub in August of 1974.

Indications were initially positive as the salvage operation commenced; the claw latched onto the sub and it began the slow ascent to the surface. However, about

halfway up the claw suffered a mechanical failure, and around 90 percent of the sub broke away- disintegrating on the ocean floor. It took eight days to winch up what little remained: a 38-foot long forward section that contained two nuclear torpedoes.

It wasn’t a total loss, but probably it was not worth the massive price tag.

The CIA never confirmed nor denied that the operation took place until it was declassified in 2007 in an attempt to avoid bad press. The Hughes Glomar Explorer, renamed the GSF Explorer, entered private hands in 1978, and was converted into a deep sea drilling ship in the 1990s.

Today, it is waiting to be scrapped. If MTU graduates had designed it, perhaps it would have had a more successful run.

A world of lore and legends: 2015 Parade of Nations AUTUMN FITZPATRICK Lode Writer The Parade of Nations is an event so notable that its date is printed annually on the backs of the free tee shirts that MTU freshman receive during orientation. You may be wondering what makes the Parade of Nations so worthy of this recognition. The Parade of Nations recognizes and celebrates the multicultural character found not only on the Michigan Tech Campus, but in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The Parade of Nations, however, is much more than a statement of celebration and requires a full experience.

Though the parade only occurs once a year, do not be disheartened, for The 2015 Parade of Nations is this Saturday, September the 19th. Many from the

Houghton, Hancock, and Michigan Tech communities will begin gathering Downtown Hancock at 11 AM on Quincy Street. Once the parade is ready to take course, those gathered will make their way through Downtown Hancock, then crossing the Lift Bridge and making way to Dee Stadium, the ice arena involved in professionalizing hockey, for the Multicultural Festival.

How does Jurassic World compare to the hit classic?

ARIN RHODES Lode Writer Jurassic World is an action adventure movie that marks Colin Trevorrow’s return to the big screen after the mixed success of Safety Guaranteed. Showing at the Film Board’s movie feature this weekend, it’s a great opportunity to see one of the biggest smash hits of the summer. Returning to the world of Jurassic Park is done creatively, standing on its own while not leaving behind the classic.

Of course, any discussion of Jurassic World would not be complete without discussing the enormous shoes it has to fill, both positive and negative. The original Jurassic Park took audiences by storm, with cutting edge special effects and the legendary directing work of Spielberg.

Even as technology has progressed, Jurassic Park remains a milestone in cinematic history. With such enormous success, it was no wonder that sequels would follow. These sequels, Jurassic Park: Lost World and Jurassic Park 3, are generally seen as poor films at best.

The perceived failure of the franchise was such that it would be nearly 15 years before another attempt would be made with Jurassic World.

It brings no small amount of joy to announce that Jurassic World is by far the best of the sequels, and even holds a candle to the original to an extent. The plot is a deceptively simple affair with more going on than it may seem.

It is clear, lore and legend are a testament to multicultural existence and help us better identify just how much influence culture has in everything around us.

Michigan Tech has students from over 70 different countries around the world, providing significant diversity. It is important to remember that Michigan Tech is not the only cultural influence, and that the Parade of Nations is not meant for only Tech students. Houghton and Hancock together provide strong Finnish, Italian, and Indigenous influence from their history with mining and much more.

When you pass through Quincy Street on Saturday be sure to notice the street signs written in English and in Finnish.

Look on the Quincy Mine and think how it brought nations together to create where you now parade. See just how diverse the community surrounding you is and remember that you belong to it.

Celebrate the unity in diversity so that we may further grow, and maybe one day take part in an even grander Parade of Nations.

A new park has been made, and it is finally in operation, making Hammond’s vision from the first movie come true.

While it is inevitable that something will go wrong, the park is done in a remarkably realistic manner, almost feeling like a place that might exist in the near future.

of a new genetically modified attraction escaping, what follows is a thrill ride from nearly start to finish. There are a few lulls in the action, and significant comedy breaking it up, but everything

flows organically and is a pleasure to watch.

On the technical side, the effects in this film have certainly benefitted from the years of technological progress

over its predecessors. With that said, more practical effects, like the famous animatronic T-Rex in the earlier films could have made certain scenes feel even more real to life. The acting was well done, with Chris Pratt’s stellar performance showing that Guardians of the Galaxy was no fluke. Michael Giacchino’s score takes inspiration from John Williams’ in a way that shows reverence for the wellknown masterpiece.

If you were a fan of the original, Jurassic World will be worth your time. If you’ve never seen the original, somehow, you should definitely see it before this one.

Either way, this movie is one of the best to come out of 2015’s summer season, and it won’t disappoint.

Is “flipped” better than traditional?

One of the very first pieces of feedback that I received from a friend who went to college a year before me was about the teaching and classroom style.

He told me that in high school you learn the material, then go practice it at home, but at his college it was flipped. In class, students are expected to review the material they had gone over prior to class. It’s worth mentioning that he was attending the School of Mines in Colorado, so his institution has the same focus that Tech does. This approach doesn’t surprise me, and in fact, it makes a lot of sense even at first glance. College is meant to be a step up, it requires increased efforts and attention. In addition to that, the flipped classroom approach provides students the opportunity to think about questions they may have before class even begins- allowing a better chance to get around to asking those questions and getting them answered. This produces more responsible and more responsive students.

Traditions are good for family gatherings and social groups, but a classroom is different. The institutions of education need to be able to change with the times and flow into better approaches as time goes on. Learning is changing, and students need to be expected to do this independently. While some may find it overbearing, the ability to dive into information without it being presented to you is a sought-after skill. Isn’t that what we as students are here for? To market ourselves as the most desirable employee? Traditional teaching methods stunt this endeavor and therefore are not the best way to learn.

Do you ever notice how teachers in grade school are simply referred to as teachers, while the university teacher is referred to as “professor”?

Professors maintain a position that is more than a teacher. Their job isn’t to be a tutor, but to facilitate the students’ learning. Traditional teaching forces them into a category where they shouldn’t be. Part of the flipped classroom approach is respecting the expanded role of the professor as well as respecting the occasion to study the material. By this principle, the true students will enjoy and benefit from the flipped classroom approach much more than the traditional style.

The flipped classroom approach seems to work on paper. But in practice does it really? The flipped classroom requires students to put in work for the class before the class has even started; to learn the material before the class period. Sometimes this can be useful as the student can formulate questions about the material that is going to be covered in class but personally I haven’t seen many questions asked in classes I’ve had that use the approach. Sometimes students may not understand the material that they were expected to learn outside of class and since the class is reviewing the material instead of learning it students that weren’t able to grasp the material may end up not learning it at all. Students at Michigan Tech are busy enough as it is. Even more work shouldn’t be piled on them with the flipped classroom approach. Classes should stay with the method of teachers teaching and students learning, not teaching themselves.

The traditional method of teaching is the best way for students to learn.

The traditional method of the professor presenting the material rather than reviewing it allows students to ask questions on the topic in real time rather than trying to remember what questions they had when they attempted to absorb the material on their own. The textbook should be used as a tool to supplement students’ learning rather than being the first source of the information.

If a professor’s role is greater than that of a teacher then doesn’t it make sense that the professor should take the active role in a classroom? Rather than letting the students try to teach themselves the material, take up the role of presenting the information and ensuring student’s understanding of the class material. If a student does not understand the material and the class period is simply review the student probably still won’t get it afterwards. If the material is presented in the classroom then the student can form and ask questions immediately and afterwards ponder the material and go over notes after class. This gives the professors the role they deserve in the classroom.

The Presidential Elections aren’t the only time voting matters, either. The party primaries decide who’s even going to be in the Presidential Race. Party primaries are just as significant as the final Presidential Election itself. They’re another part of the process that voters should at least have a little interest in. It’s hard for a candidate to receive votes if they’re not even on the ballot; that’s why it’s important to support your candidate at every step of the way.

When the primaries are ignored, there’s

often a discrepancy between popular opinion and who’s actually receiving votes.

For example, Donald Trump is often mocked on the news, talk shows, internet boards and various social media. Conversely, he rarely receives praise on any medium. Simply Googling “why is Donald Trump winning” will yield a lot of results, most of them being writers baffled at the fact that he wasn’t laughed out of Washington. Yet, of all the Republican candidates, he’s currently the most probable to be running for the 2016 Presidential Election. If all of the eligible voters who are openly mocking him actually voted, it might be a different story.

Congress is a beast of its own. More people approve of Nickelback than Congress. Everywhere voters are crying out for term limits on Congress, as they perceive Congress to sit on their hands all day and get nothing done yet get reelected for a life-time.

Even if a term limit were enacted, it wouldn’t happen for many years. A quicker solution would be to simply vote for Congress members. Congressional elections get far less publicity than Presidential elections; as expected, they get a much lower voter turnout. With the 2014 midterm election voter turnout at the lowest it has ever been in seventy years, is it much of a surprise that Congress’ approval rating is so low? If a higher percentage of eligible voters voted, the government would more accurately protect the interests of the majority.

Reinventing your image

College is a perfect time to reinvent yourself and allow other people to see you in a new or better light. Changing your image has much more to do with than just outward appearances though, as you can change your habits as well. For many people, college is a brand-new environment in which they hardly know any of the people around them.

While this can be quite intimidating, it is also helpful in that no one knows who you are or what your history is.

As a new chapter in your life story, you are in complete control of what the words will say, and the only people reading previous chapters are the ones you allow. As an example, let’s say that you are aware of your habit of always speaking over other people and you don’t like that you do this. As a goal, you want people to think that you are a great listener and have interest in what others are saying. The next time an acquaintance strikes up a conversation with you, wait until they are completely finished with what they are saying before replying. Then, when you

reply to them, comment on what they said or ask them a probing question instead of immediately interjecting about yourself.

In this way, you seem invested in the conversation and what they are saying.

For myself, starting college was an

My first semester did not go as I wanted it, so I realized that I needed to make a few changes. Firstly, my academics became my priority and I devoted more time than I ever had to studying and school work. I reached out to professors when I needed help and used the multiliteracy center to improve my essays. I joined the Lode and became a part of something that is now very important to me. At the end of the semester

I was recognized on the Dean’s List and received a certificate of merit in a math class.

These results have propelled me further into my desire for achieving academically.

Change is an ongoing process and continual growth and success will only further the person I want to be.

As a rule of thumb, no goal you make should require more effort than you have.

But if you find yourself reverting to your old ways, remember that changes like these don’t happen overnight, and time and effort are required to reach important goals. Goals should be positive and the outcomes should be beneficial to your life and your future.

Take an initiative and strive to get the things that you want. Have you always wanted to become a sorority sister or a fraternity brother? Find a few that you like and attend some of the rushes they are hosting. Talk to the brothers or sisters and introduce yourself; ask questions and offer information about yourself. Don’t let a good opportunity go to waste! College is a crossroad between childhood and adulthood, so making the right choices for yourself now will give you a better future.

Everyone has probably heard it before.

It’s been ingrained into the brains of all Americans- that it’s both a right and a responsibility to vote. Unfortunately, the inconvenience of voting often outweighs the benefits in the eyes of many Americans.

Approximately 46 percent of eligible voters did not vote in 2012. That’s almost half of the population. To put this number into perspective, Barack Obama received a popular vote of about 51 percent. With only 54 percent of the population voting, that means only a little over one-fourth of the population voted for him. In a supposed bipartisan democracy, having a leader elected by one-fourth of the population doesn’t sound right.

The government approval ratings definitely reflect the low voter turnout.

Barack Obama’s average approval rating is 47 percent; this is significantly below the average presidential approval rating of 53 percent. Obama’s low approval rating may not necessarily be his fault. With the famous internet saying, “Thanks, Obama!” it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that Congress’ abysmal 14 percent approval rating is affecting the President’s as well. Honestly, with only one-fourth of the population voting for him and low government approval ratings across

the board, it’s hard to know exactly why his approval ratings are so low. Perhaps he may not have been elected at all had more American adults voted during the Presidential Elections?

Oof. These last few weeks have been a very busy and tumultuous time for the Lode. Since we elected new section editors last spring, we’ve had almost a full turnover.

Coming back from my internship in the summer, I knew that I would be in for a big project in stepping into the position of Editor in Chief, but I didn’t know much of what to expect.

Luckily for me, we have a few very enthusiastic, deadicated people leftover from last year, and even more who’ve stepped up to join the organization as we began anew.

Starting next week, we’ll have new editors for sports, news and pulse. Our design editor will be leaving us as soon as she finishes passing on her years of experience to her replacement and to me.

We’ve gained a huge number of new writers who are excited to add their point of view to the Lode, and we’re even adding copy editors and photographers to our staff.

While we’re still looking for people in all areas and we’ll be ironing a few things out as all of our new staff gets used to things, I can say for the first time this year that I’m really proud of how far we’ve come and I’m really excited about what I think we can accomplish.

I know that one of the most challenging and most exciting things about being heavily involved in a student organization is the high turnover rate, and this transition has certainly kept us all up for a few nights.

I am confident, however, that with a new and revitalized staff, we can keep a fresh perspective on the goings-on both on campus and in the wider Houghton/ Hancock community.

KASSIA PRYSTALSKI Editor in Chief After finishing fourth out of 11 teams at the Midwest Open in Kenosha, WIs. last weekend, the men’s cross-country team has had a good season so far. One of the key players this year is Daniel Byrne, a Computer Science major. Byrne placed second overall at the UP Championships in Marquette, Mich. on Sept. 4, helping them get the title at that match.

“What brought me to Michigan Tech is the combination of athletics and academics I really enjoy computers and Michigan Tech has a strong technical background,” he said.

The senior boasts a 3.70 cumulative grade point average in his major. “I’ve really had a lot of success in both areas.”

When he’s not studying or training, Byrne manages to find time to enjoy the area. “My favorite thing to do outside racing and studying is going out and exploring the Keweenaw, hiking around Copper Harbor, and getting some camping

“All in all, it was a good early September race as we continue to prepare for championship racing more than a month away,” said Joda.

The Huskies will be traveling to the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. next weekend.

The Huskies completed a 4-0 weekend with a pair of 3-1 victories today—one over St. Cloud State and another vs. South Dakota Mines.

‘We’re playing as a team: selflessly and with confidence,” said Tech coach Matt Jennings. “On a day like today, those areas made the difference in the end. This team has guts, and I’m incredibly proud of what they’re doing.”

Of the many strong performances by Huskies: Aubrey Ficek had a team-high 43 kills on the weekend; Lauren Emmert added 42 kills on a .326 hitting percentage; Stephanie Dietrich hit .462 with only two errors in four matches; Jacqueline Aird posted 59 digs and is closing in on Tech’s all-time digs record.

Michigan Tech 3, St. Cloud State 1 The Huskies dropped the opening set vs. St. Cloud State 25-18 before rallying to win the next three 25-16, 25-11 and 25-21. Freshman Mariah Sherman had a team-high 14 kills while Emmert posted 10 kills and figured into six blocks. Sylvie Rokosh added eight kills with zero errors.

After losing the first set, Tech dominated sets two and three. The Black and Gold won five of the final six points in the second set, then won the final four points of the third set. A Sherman kill and a block by Sherman and Emmert finished the match.

“St. Cloud plays a different system that challenges teams at the net,” said Jennings.

“We made adjustments to neutralize their slide attack and allow us to play fast.

Kendall Ward came in and disrupted their offense with strong swings and putting up a big block.”

Michigan Tech 3, South Dakota Mines 1 Tech had to battle to stay unbeaten in its final match of the weekend. South

Dakota Mines fought off three set points to claim the opening set 28-26. The Huskies bounced back for set wins of 2516, 25-22 and 25-19.

Rokosh and Ficek kills closed out the second set. Halie Hart put away the Hardrockers in a close third set with a service ace. Tech led 21-14 in the fourth set before South Dakota Mines scored six out of eight to close within 23-19. Ficek pounded home a kill, and the Hardrockers made an error to end the match.

Hart had a career-high 20 digs in the match. Ficek led all players with 17 kills.

“Mines was a scrappy team that played well in the middle and in serve receive,” said Jennings. “They caught us sleeping in set one and played aggressively.

“The match was a grueling two hours and took everything we had left in the tank to pull it off.”

Michigan Tech will bring its 8-0 record home for its first GLIAC matches next weekend. The Huskies host Lake Superior State Friday (Sept. 18) night at 7 p.m. and Northwood Saturday (Sept. 19) .at 3 p.m.

Football Huskies edge Malone 28-27 Press Release for MTU Huskies

MICHIGAN TECH ATHLETICS Press Release Michigan Tech overcame a 20-7 second-quarter deficit to defeat Malone 28-27 in GLIAC football at Sherman Field last Saturday. David Walter hauled in a 21-yard pass from Brandon Cowie with 6:05 remaining, and the Huskies held on to move to 2-0 on the season.

“We made plays when we had to make plays to get a W,” said Tech coach Tom Kearly. “We haven’t played a full 60-minute game yet this year, but we’ve got good character kids who know how to get it done when it matters.”

Neither team punted in the opening half. After a Cowie-to-Andrew Clark touchdown six minutes into the first quarter, Malone scored on three straight possessions for a 20-7 advantage.

Tech fumbled and turned the ball over on downs during the Pioneers’ 20-point streak. A missed extra point on MU’s third TD provided the scoring difference in the game.

The hosts pulled within 20-14 on Alex Sherbinow’s three-yard run with 1:52 left in the first half. The Pioneers missed a 46-yard field goal on the final play of the half, leaving the margin six at the break.

Tech took the lead less than five minutes into the second half 21-20 on Sherbinow’s second TD run.

Malone hit a 44-yard pass play later in the third quarter to regain the lead 2721.

The Black and Gold drove 64 yards on seven plays on the game-winning drive, with Walter’s seventh catch of the day (for 135 yards) providing the scoring play. Josh King hit the all-important extra point for a 28-27 advantage.

Michigan Tech Athletics Press Release The 2015-16 Michigan Tech hockey team will play an intrasquad game and host the annual Skate With The Huskies event at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Saturday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m.

Admission is $2 per person with all proceeds going to youth hockey programs in the area.

The game will feature two 25-minute halves with three media timeouts each half. The entire 28man Michigan Tech roster will participate, and Skate With The Huskies with begin immediately following the game.

The hockey team will also be hosting a “Hockey 101” session for all Michigan Tech international students at 4 p.m. that day. Australian Rules football JOEL SMITH Lode Writer

Over the weekend, I was introduced to a new sport. Often called Footy or Aussie Rules, this sport is little known throughout most of world. Originating in Australia over 150 years ago, the sport has grown to be arguably the most popular sport in its home country, where it draws crowds of more than 90 thousand spectators, and the broadcasts get between 2-3 million viewers.

While played in several countries around the world, it’s really only played professionally in Australia.

At first glance, the game might look like Rugby; It has lots of players wearing no pads, running around with a rounded football.

Footy, however, tends to be even more fluid.

Play rarely stops, and players are almost constantly running. The field itself is eggshaped, and has more than twice the area of a soccer field. With 18 players from each team on the field at any time, there’s many different ways a particular play could unfold.

The goal of the game is to kick the ball through two large goal posts at opposing ends of the field. When achieved, this gains the team 6 points. If the ball is instead knocked through the goal posts by any other means, bounces off the goal posts without passing through, or goes wide and instead passes through two smaller posts on either side, no goal is given, but the team is awarded a “behind” instead, which is worth one point.

As you should expect, tackling is allowed as long as the hit happens below the shoulders and above the knees. Tackles aren’t always quick and clean, and sometimes several players get involved and a dog pile forms while players grapple for the ball. This often results in “holding the ball”, in which the players must separate, and a free kick is granted to the player who started the tackle.

One of the more entertaining aspects of the game is that players are allowed to use each other as springboards to get higher in the air. It’s not too uncommon to see someone trying to catch the ball, and jumping on another players shoulders (usually an opponent) to snatch the ball out of the air before anyone else can reach it.

It’s a fun sport to watch. Hopefully it will get a better foothold in more countries, so that international competition will become more fierce and exciting.

Climb time

It’s mid-afternoon, and Vincent McLain and Alex Gill are up front in the steamy van that is now bouncing across the Houghton-Hancock Bridge, as sporadic breezes that reach in from the front windows, and the two climbers headed out this evening go back and forth.

McLain, driving the van packed with carabiners, cams, rope and other climbing gear, is a Mechanical Engineering student at Tech. He’s an avid outdoorsman with a knack for climbing both ice and rock. Just recently, McLain joined Superior Search and Rescue. “I’m happy to help,” he says. “But hopefully I won’t be needed.”

We are headed for Cliff Drive, a stretch of road in the heart of the Keweenaw overlooked by a range of outcroppings to the west. The dark grey crags visible from the quiet road are made up of some of the oldest rock on Earth.

There are many routes along Cliff Drive, with something for every level of climber. It is a great place to learn and progress. “JC Superstar” is where they were warming up today. “A five-four,” Gill explains. “Not too bad.”

The ratings started with mountaineers, going from one (hiking flat ground) to five (scrambling up a face). As climbing took off as a sport, the five had to be divided into specific categories of varying difficulty. Five-four (5.4) is a steep wall, with plenty of good holds. While something like 5.15 is a feat of superhuman strength and stamina.

McLain pulls off to the right and they clamber out of the car. They emptied the trunk and distributed the gear. The ropes that they would soon be dangling from were cinched around their waists, and slung over their shoulders. McLain and Gill carry the other tools and we start off into the woods.

As the trail nears the cliff side, Canada Yew starts yanking at their ankles. The path weaved around boulders the size of buses that fell long ago. Then, abruptly, they stopped at the base of a spire.

“We’re here. Lose some weight and we’ll go anchor the top rope.” They “flake” the rope (unravel carefully ridding of knots) and lead the way up and around to the top, where Gill methodically ties down to a couple of healthy trees. One by one, they repel to the bottom and begin climbing.

The first couple climbs were simple enough, and the seasoned vets generously explained what they did. Soon the sun ducked behind the towering rock surface, and they broke out headlamps and they started mock leading to simulate anchoring along the climb. Gill went first.

now in the darkness, flashed down as he called out. He’s referring to friction in the rope he was pulling up with him. McLain chuckled, and gestured down to his feet; he’s gripping the rope with his toes.

On the drive home, Gill worked on perfecting his water knots and figure-eights riding shotgun while McLain mentioned his future plans. He wants to drive across the U.S., climbing all the best spots. He’s done multiple engineering projects involving climbing gear: designing a platform to sleep on while climbing and a cam (A device that can be planted in slots to support you).

McLain has been climbing his entire life, going to local climbing gyms for birthdays when he was younger. He’s currently working on a guide book that gives in-depth descriptions and pictures of all the best climbs in the Keweenaw.

“Hardcore climbers in the Keweenaw just climb all the time.” He explains. “Not all of the routes are extreme, but we do okay for ourselves by going out as often as possible.”

And when the snow falls and the water freezes, McLain and Gill will break out the ice picks and be out there still, climbing on and on.
