Mind Trekkers instill love for science ERIKA VICHCALES Lode Writer As children get older, their interest and love for science seems to fade. Michigan Tech’s Mind Trekkers are working towards bringing that love back to students across the nation. Michigan Tech Mind Trekkers is a student organization aiming to interest kids in STEM fields. “As an organization, we find student volunteers, graduate and undergraduate, as well as the occasional professor or other Michigan Tech staff member. These volunteers facilitate a wide variety of 3 to 5 minute STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, demonstrations targeted at kindergarten through 12th grade students,” explained student and vice president of Mind Trekkers Dane Matilla. “These demonstrations are aimed at being hands on, interactive, fun, and an inspiration to students, parents, and teachers.

We aim to spark interest in STEM subjects and the opportunities in STEM careers. The Center for PreCollege outreach has the role of finding funding to put on our events throughout the country.” Mind Trekkers finds interesting ways to teach and excite students. One way they interest kids is by doing short, 30 second to three minute activities with music and video added to create a high-energy atmosphere. The student volunteers come up with the activities based on information they learned in places such as lab classes on campus. They also scour the Internet and find fun ideas on YouTube, among other places. “Mind Trekkers aims to present science as fun and to give people the realization that these interests aren’t for ‘Geeks,’” said Matilla. “One of our taglines is ‘Discover the science behind the mystery!’ This is exactly what Mind Trekkers does. Our demonstrations often display things that

people sometimes consider a mystery,” said Matilla. “Through our volunteers, people can experience and learn how these phenomena work scientifically. Though we focus on STEM fields, our biggest goal is to encourage students to pursue a college

career in whatever they are passionate about.” One of the popular activities Mind Trekkers has done is create oobleck, a mixture of cornstarch and water that turns into a solid when pressure is applied. When they demonstrate the

mixture, students walk on it. If they stop, they sink in. If they stop walking, however, the oobleck will become a solid around your foot, creating a suction affect. Another exciting experiment Mind Trekkers often demonstrate is what they Continued on page 3
