A day in the life of Blizzard T. Husky NICOLE IUTZI Lode Writer The Michigan Mining School changed its name to Michigan Technological University in 1964. With the name change came a new mascot identity, something students could call themselves (besides students) on campus. The Michigan Tech Huskies were born and Blizzard T. Husky became the official mascot after a naming competition in 1997. Blizzard T. Husky is a role that few people get to fill. Those few who do have the opportunity to fill Blizzard’s shoes remain anonymous throughout their time at Michigan Tech. Thomas Waltz, who sported the Blizzard mascot costume for his first through senior years at Tech even wrote a blog about his experience. Carnival—almost any event on campus. He carries the spirit of Tech in his paws. When asked what the ‘T’ stands for in Blizzard T. Husky, Blizzard said, “’T’ stands for ‘The’ but secretly I like to think that it’s ‘Tiberious’.” Since it was first stitched, Blizzard’s suit has changed just like anyone’s attire changes. His spirit, however, is and has always been one of support and enthusiasm for Tech and its loyal fans. Blizzard is a special part of Michigan Tech, and has been seen on many posters throughout the years. “I tend to think people feel me as a special mascot because the campus is relatively small compared to other public universities. I feel that I am able to connect more with the students in the smaller setting of Michigan Tech,” said Blizzard. Waltz said none of his friends would really notice that he would disappear for hockey games, or other events when he was Blizzard.
