When Barack Obama went up against John McCain for the U.S. Presidency in the 2008 election following Republican George W. Bush's two-term bid, at least Obama's opponent had some dignity, some respect about himself. John McCain was a war
hero, who survived being a prisoner of war in Vietnam; a longtime senator from Arizona who had many supporters and admirers.
Still, African Americans across the country went to the polls and overwhelmingly voted for Obama,

2024 presidential election on a knife’s edge as early votes pour
by Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent
With the 2024 presidential election just two weeks away, early voting is surging nationwide as both parties make their final push to secure crucial ballots. Early voting data has begun to shed light on which states might see the most significant shifts—and, in some cases, repeat the razor-thin margins of 2020. While Independent and other voters are mostly excluded from the figures, pollsters warn that party affiliation doesn’t necessarily determine who early voters are casting their ballots for.
National Early Voting Trends: Key Battlegrounds in Focus
Across the nation, more than 15 million mail-in and early in-person votes have already been cast. Among these early votes, 46% come from registered Democrats, 36% from Republicans, and 18% from other parties. The early
edged out Trump in 2020, has seen 326,124 early votes, with Democrats accounting for 40% and Republicans just 19%. In Michigan, where Biden won by a margin of 50.6% to 47.8% in the last election, 1,031,654 early votes have been cast, with 54% from Democrats and 36% from Republicans.
Pennsylvania, pivotal in Biden’s 2020 victory, has already seen 921,720 early votes, with 64% from Democrats and 27% from Republicans. Nevada, an-
swing states, and that will decide it,” Carville said, adding, “Whoever breaks those states 5-2 or 6-1 will not only take the presidency; they’ll likely do well in the House and Senate too.”
The Shadow of Project 2025
While much of the focus is on the election itself, the looming influence of Project 2025, a Heritage Foundation initiative to reshape the federal government, has garnered attention. The initiative,
“This race is a long way from decided,” said James Carville, who noted he has “a feeling” Kamala Harris will win. “But one thing’s clear— whoever breaks those states is going to take the presidency.”
voting push comes as Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign encourages Democratic voters to take advantage of mail-in and early voting to lock in ballots well before Election Day, countering the traditionally lower early voting rates among Democratic voters in past elections. Despite initially criticizing early voting, the twice-impeached former President Donald Trump’s campaign has urged Republicans to vote early, apparently recognizing its critical role in battleground states.
In Georgia, where Biden narrowly defeated Trump in 2020, early voting has seen 1,691,298 ballots cast so far. The partisan split is tight, with 49% from Republicans and 46% from Democrats, reflecting how crucial the state remains in the 2024 contest. Wisconsin, another battleground where Biden
other state that helped seal Biden’s win in 2020, has logged 247,738 early votes, with a breakdown of 40% Democrats, 35% Republicans, and 25% from other voters.
The Toss-Up Nature of the 2024 Election Polling data, including a Washington Post-Schar School survey, shows that Harris and Trump are locked in a dead heat, with each receiving 47% support from registered voters. Among likely voters, Harris holds a slight 1-point lead at 49%, compared to Trump’s 48%.
This trend mirrors the tight electoral battles seen in these battleground states, where margins of victory could come down to just a few thousand votes, as they did in 2020.
“I think this election will break at the end,” veteran Democratic strategist James Carville stated.

which has strong ties to Trump’s first administration, is conservative in ideology. Despite Trump’s claims that he has no connection to the project, analysis has revealed that well over half of the 307 authors and contributors to the “Mandate for Leadership,” the document guiding Project 2025, served in Trump’s administration or during his campaign.
The policy proposals outlined in Project 2025 aim to overhaul key aspects of the federal government, including dramatically reshaping regulatory frameworks, reducing the size of government, and reversing many policies implemented by the Biden administration. Critics have pointed out that the project could significantly alter how federal agencies operate, and its influence could expand should Trump return to the White House.
“This race is a long way from decided,” added Carville, who noted he has “a feeling” Harris will win. “But one thing’s clear— whoever breaks those states is going to take the presidency.”

During her 25-minute speech, Brazile showed she has a thing for comedy, getting the crowd to laugh at a number of comments, including saying that people must find others wherever they may be and get them to vote, even if they’re at the “Dollar 25 Tree.” "You're talking to one another, you're volunteering, you're hosting these events...we have so much at stake and I urge each and every one of you to give it your all," Brazile said onstage.
Brazile made it clear that she has not been paid by any political party since 2000. "My Black job is ABC News," she said, to laughter. "And voting is my Black job. So I need you all to stay engaged, stay informed... Everything matters now. What's happening in the Middle East will impact us. What's happening in the Far East will impact
us. And yes, what's happening at our borders (will impact us)."
"Trust is the missing ingredient in American politics," Brazile added. Brazile reminded the audience that some Republicans like former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney have denounced Trump and are supporting Harris. Brazile said there are Republicans out there who know the danger of Trump, and there are more Republicans out there that don't want to support Trump, but also don't want to say it publicly.
Brazile also touched on the notion that some Black men don't want to support Harris and would rather support Trump. Brazile said that Black men will be "in good hands" with Harris.
Brazile was asked how Black women should view themselves in this important election. "We need to put this conversation on the table. We have a com-
munity who will stand up, defend the constitution and will work on behalf of all Americans. Her name is Kamala Harris," Brazile said. "She's terrific, she's smart, she's capable and she has put forth the policies that will help the American people. Her opponent is the former President of the United States of America. He has been convicted on 34 felony counts, he's still facing trial in several jurisdictions...he's also had fines for sexually assaulting a woman...here's the only simple fact. He does not believe in the rule of law and he has not conceded the last election. Thereby saying to 81 million Americans who voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris that our votes don't matter."
Brazile was emphatic when she said the Black women's vote for Harris means a vote for someone "who can lead us all.”

ris in the polls to see who will win Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, and other swing states. When Michelle Obama gets on stage and asks, "How is it even this close?" ...We agree. How can it be this close? How can there be rumblings that some African American men want to "sit out" this election, or even vote for someone as immoral and uncouth as Trump? And then when President Obama challenges Black men not to sit out the election and vote for a Black woman, Obama gets thrown into the fire by some Black men on social media. Hopefully, Black people in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the rest of Pennsylvania aren't subscribing to that "Vote for Trump" nonsense. Hopefully, Black people in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the rest of Pennsylvania know that the choice for president is clear. During the Civil Rights Movement and earlier, we as Black people had to unite against the hate, against the racism, against the discrimination, against being given only the scraps. We believed in a higher power, God almighty, to bring us better days. We learned to do the right thing, the moral thing, the sensible thing, in spite of being spit on and looked over.
Kamala Harris stands for morality. She stands for what's right. Donald Trump stands for immorality. He stands for what's wrong. Some Black people try to challenge Harris and ask, "What have you ever done for Black people?"
We ask this question... Donald Trump was in the presidency for four years....we already know he did nothing for Black people. Already, before even be-
coming president, Kamala Harris has inspired a generation of young Black girls to show that they, too, could become vice president of the United States. Young Black girls are watching the attack
ads on her by Trump and other Republican PACs, and still, Kamala Harris, like she did at the candidates' only debate on Sept. 10 in Philadelphia, brushed it off and took Trump on right to his face.
Kamala Harris is the perfect example of a professional Black woman. She chose to go to Howard University, an HBCU. She chose to join the Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha. She chose a life of public service, and became the first woman District Attorney in San Francisco's history, and then became Attorney General of the state of California.
Some of you Black men are afraid of a Black woman with a backbone. Harris is very mentally strong. Harris doesn't let the naysayers and haters get to her. Harris is confident. Harris is secure within herself.
On the other hand, tell Trump that people leave his rallies early, and he'll go off on a 20-minute tangent, and then say things like immigrants are eating the dogs...(and the cats...)
To the African Americans in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and Penn-
sylvania, and to everyone else, the choice is clear. Donald Trump is simply unfit to be a president, let alone the leader of his own household. Kamala Harris is a born leader. People forget...she's the current vice president! She has been side-by-side with President Joe Biden on a number of key decisions, met many of the world's leaders, and understands what the presidency is like. Trump had his chance, and there's a reason the American people voted him out in 2020. Keep him away from the White House. Keep insanity away from the White House.
The New Pittsburgh Courier strongly endorses Kamala Harris for president of the United States. Don't sit this one out. Vote on or before November 5. Now is not the time for us to go backward. We as a people, we're moving forward, and no one will stop us.
KAMALA HARRIS COULD MAKE HISTORY AS THE FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT IN U.S. HISTORY.

This is Mike Tomlin's Steelers team
Russell Wilson proved people wrong, including Big Ben
QUARTERBACK RUSSELL WILSON
The Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants played a competitive and exciting game on Monday Night Football. The Steelers prevailed by the score of 26-18, Oct. 27. However, folks continue to become weirder and weirder. I keep hearing questionable sounds coming from the alleys with the rats and the cats. There are screams of horror with the victims yelling: “We need more wide receivers, trade Russell Wilson or Justin Fields to acquire a number two wideout...” I don’t exactly know where these screams may be originating from. But we can take a good guess once we reach that poorly lit area if we focus on a few of the garbage cans without lids, we will discover the victims...oops, I meant fans that are residing in the immediate vicinity. Pittsburgh Steelers wide receivers George Pickens, Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III, and tight-ends Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth combined for the majority of the 278 yards that the Steelers gained through the air against the New York Giants defense. Now please explain this to me. If the Steelers or any other NFL franchise were to retain the services of John Stallworth, Lynn Swann, Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Lance Alworth or any other NFL wide receiver and did not have a quarterback to toss them the rock, they would be the perfect examples of rich players that got paid and laid, while the Steelers or any NFL team that adopted that financial and personnel strategy would have gotten slayed. That would be the perfect example of a strategy for mediocrity. Different strokes for different folks is how I would describe how many folks define the noun, “mediocrity.” Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes mediocre as: 1. The quality or
state of being mediocre. (Came to terms with his mediocrity.) In fact,
many yinzers misuse the word and incorrectly define Steelers Head
Coach Mike Tomlin as mediocre, at least by the definition provided by the dictionary. Mike Tomlin has a 17year streak of greatness as an NFL coach. If there are any people from the sports world that could be defined as “mediocre,” many of the people that cover Mike Tomlin would definitely fit into that category.
In an article posted by Jacob Camenker on December 14, 2023, titled; “Ben Roethlisberger criticizes Mike Tomlins ‘bad coaching’ in Steelers loss to Patriots,” the article quoted Roethlisberger as saying: “Maybe the tradition of the Pittsburgh Steelers is done.” The article also pointed out that: “this isn’t the first time that Roethlisberger has openly criticized his former team. He referred to some of the teams players as ‘coddled’ last season in comments that drew the ire of defensive lineman Cameron Heyward.” Roethlisberger had the nerve to use the word “coddled.” I don’t know, nor have I seen anoth -
er NFL or Pittsburgh Steelers player past, or present that has been more entitled or “coddled” than Ben Roethlisberger. Rothlisberger was one of the primary reasons if not the primary reason that two Steelers NFL Pro-Bowlers, LeVeon Bell and Antonio Brown, exited the team prematurely. Out in the then-Heinz Field parking lot, “Big Ben” had separate buses parked and ready to go with all of the players’ and coaches’ names on them, just in case he was forced to throw more than two people under the bus, simultaneously. Another excerpt from the article quoted Roethlisberger trashing the Steelers coaching staff: “You can’t afford in the second half of games to burn silly timeouts and not to have them late in the game. To me, that’s bad coaching.” Just a few weeks ago “fly-by-nighter” Roethlisberger was critical of Mike Tomlin’s decision to sit QB Justin Fields and replace him
with 35-year-old Russell Wilson. Now the bipolar, schizophrenic, “podcast coach” is all in on Russell Wilson as he has proven everyone to be wrong, except Mike Tomlin.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are poised to enter a new era. Hopefully, there will be no negative conduct issues to distract the team. This new team belongs to Mike Tomlin. No one will be able to say that Tomlin won with Bill Cowher’s players. No one player will be able to vilify his fellow teammates on a whim. That player will no longer be empowered to reject blame for his bad performances and deflect responsibility for the negative outcomes of games, unjustifiably to others. The players from the 2024 squad not only accept responsibility, they welcome it, just like they will welcome hoisting a championship trophy above their heads when they are standing in the winner’s circle.

Black retirees growing older and poorer
As Americans live longer, the ability to remain financially independent is an ongoing struggle. Especially for Black and other people of color whose lifetime incomes are often lower than that of other contemporaries, finding money to save for “old age” is particularly daunting.
According to the National Council on Aging, racial and ethnic minorities accounted for 1 in 4 adults aged 65 and older in 2022. In that same year, the average 65-year-old could expect to live another 18 years or longer, on a median income of $29,740.
In 2022, the average yearly Social Security benefit for Black men ages 65 and older was $15,345, and for Black women was only $13,755. However, the average annual Social Security income for all 65 or older men was $18,910, and for all older women was $14,824.
In past generations retiring workers often received a gold watch, a pension and company-sponsored health insurance. But today’s retirees face far different circumstances. With few remaining pensions available, most workers must look to themselves for financial security in their old age.

And Social Security has become a financial lifeline.
When enacted in 1935 during the throes of the Great Depression, Social Security was a groundbreaking federal social safety net for retirees. Financed by payroll taxes that began in 1937, both employees and their employers paid into the program. A 1939 amendment to the law expanded the program to include survivor benefits for retirees’ widows and children, commonly known today as SSI. In 1956 disability benefits were added in a second expansion.
To compensate beneficiaries for rises in cost of living, an annual Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) began in 1975. Prior to 1972, only special acts of Congress could increase benefits.
Today, more than 80 years later, 68 million retirees and 4.5 million other program participants recently learned that a 2.5 percent COLA increase will be added to their monthly checks—even lower than the 2.6 percent decade-long average computed by Social Security. For retirees, the increase will begin in January. SSI beneficiaries will receive their increase with their Dec. 31 payment. Next year’s increase means the average retiree’s monthly $1,927 Social Security check will rise by $49. The monthly average for an elderly couple with both receiving benefits will be $3,089, from 2024’s $3,014—a $75 increase. It is important to note that individual benefit levels are determined by a formula that uses a worker’s highest earnings over a 34-year career. Should Medicare’s 2025 rates increase as expected, the net increase to retiree checks will be even less.
As the nation still struggles to cope with rising prices, the agency’s statement and those of elder advocates were polar opposites.
Living paycheck to paycheck is a financial situation where an individual or family’s income barely covers essential living expenses such as housing, utilities, groceries, and transportation. If one paycheck were to be missed, it would lead to significant financial strain and difficulty in meeting basic needs. This precarious financial situation leaves little room for saving or investing, making individuals vulnerable to unexpected emergencies or income loss.
According to a survey conducted by Payroll.org, a staggering 78 percent of Americans find themselves living paycheck to paycheck, marking a 6 percent increase from the previous year. This means more than three-quarters of the population struggles to save or invest after covering their monthly expenses.
Chawn Payton, a Northwestern Mutual financial advisor, says that living paycheck to paycheck often means “spending the money before it even hits the bank account” and being unable to “level up financially.” This can make it difficult to save for the future or enjoy life in the present.
How Did We Get Here?
The root causes can be attributed to increased spending, which is outpacing income growth. High inflation and rising interest rates are contributing factors. According to the
In the world of personal finance, the financial decisions you make early on in life will have a long-lasting impact on your financial health. In this article I’m going to compare two individuals, the Investor and the Indulger, both starting their careers at the same time with the same starting salary of $35,000 per year. However, they made drastically different financial choices. These choices highlight the fundamental principles of wealth-building and the consequences of living for the moment.
The Investor: Discipline and LongTerm Wealth-Building
The Investor embodies the mindset of someone committed to financial growth and future security. By investing 15 percent of his income each year and benefiting from consistent annual raises and an average return of 10 percent, he is able to amass over $1,126,660 after 30 years. This path illustrates the following key financial principles:
• Compound Interest: The Investor’s success largely stems from the power of compound interest. By consistently saving and investing, even modest contributions can grow exponentially over time. With an average investment return of 10 percent, his wealth builds steadily as both his initial investment and the interest it generates begin to accumulate. As the old saying goes, “Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. Those who understand this, earn it. Those who don’t, pay it.”
• Consistency and Discipline: The Investor adheres to a disciplined financial strategy. Rather than chasing high-risk investments or trying to “time the market,” his investment strategy focuses on “time in the market.” He sticks to a consistent investment plan. This approach allows him to ride out market fluctuations and capitalize on long-term market growth.
• Living Below His Means: By investing 15 percent of his income, the Investor ensures that he is saving before spending, a crucial principle in personal finance. This allows him to enjoy his current lifestyle while still preparing for the future. Living below your means is the key to having enough resources for both the present and the future.
to paycheck, you may emulate those behaviors,” Payton says. “To address the challenges of living paycheck to paycheck, individuals must adopt proactive measures to improve their financial well-being.”
Budgeting Basics
A staggering 78 percent of Americans find themselves living paycheck to paycheck, a survey finds. To save, one financial adviser suggests starting with a spending plan rather than a budget.
Federal Reserve’s report, 40 percent of adults experienced a rise in their family’s monthly spending compared to the previous year. In Houston, individuals need to earn $75,088 annually (or $36.10 hourly) to live comfortably and avoid living paycheck to paycheck.
Payton adds that much of the difficulty arises from deeper issues, such as one’s relationship with money. “If you come from a household where you saw your parents live paycheck
One key strategy is creating a comprehensive budget that accurately reflects income and expenses. Payton suggests starting with a spending plan rather than a budget, as the term “budget” can often feel restrictive. “Go back through two or three months of your bank statements—normal months, not months where you had major travel or expenses—and print them out,” he advises. From there, categorize your spending into “needs” and “wants”
The Indulger, on the other hand, represents someone who prioritizes the present over the future. He spends his entire income on a luxurious lifestyle, saving nothing and leaving himself financially vulnerable. The Indulger is a prime example of “Big Hat, No Cattle.” After 30 years, despite earning the same salary and receiving the same raises as the Investor, he has no savings to show for it. This situation highlights several key financial lessons:
• Taking Advantage of Salary Increases: The Investor wisely uses the 3 percent annual raises not to inflate his lifestyle but to increase his investment contributions. This allows his wealth to grow not just through returns but also through higher contributions as his salary increases. The Indulger: Immediate Gratification at the Expense of Future Security
• Lifestyle Inflation AKA Lifestyle Creep: One of the major pitfalls of the Indulgers financial approach is lifestyle creep. As his income increases, so does his spending. This phenomenon prevents him from saving or investing, trapping him in a cycle of paycheck-to-paycheck living. While the Indulger enjoys short-term luxuries, he sacrifices long-term security.
• Lack of Savings and Investments: The Indulger’s decision to forgo saving and investing means that he misses out on the potential growth of compound interest. Without savings, he has no financial cushion for emergencies, retirement, or unexpected life events. His focus on short-term gratification leaves him finan-
to identify areas for reduction. By analyzing these spending habits, you can make small but significant adjustments. “You may have 12 subscriptions you forgot about, or you’re spending unnecessarily on luxuries like monthly cosmetic boxes or extra streaming services,” Payton explains. “Reducing discretionary spending can create breathing room in your finances.”
Building an emergency fund is crucial for financial resilience. Setting aside a portion of each paycheck into a dedicated savings account can provide a financial safety net during unexpected hardship, such as medical emergencies or job loss. Payton suggests automating savings to help people stay consistent: “When saving is automatic, you don’t think about it, and the money grows without extra effort.”
Another effective strategy is seeking additional income through side gigs or part-time work. Payton acknowledges that “not all avenues for extra income are for everybody,” but encourages individuals to explore the growing options available, whether that’s a side hustle or career ad-
cially exposed in the long run.
• The Illusion of Wealth: Although the Indulger may appear successful outwardly, with a luxurious lifestyle funded by his entire income, this is a facade. His financial reality is far more precarious. Without savings or investments, he has no wealth to fall back on, and his ability to maintain this lifestyle is dependent entirely on his ability to keep earning the same (or more) income.
• Missed Opportunities: By not investing his income, the Indulger misses out on the opportunity to grow his wealth. He may not realize it, but the financial security and freedom that could come from investing is sacrificed in favor of immediate consumption. Lessons from the Investor and the Indulger
The contrasting financial journeys of the Investor and the Indulger underscore the importance of discipline, planning, and the long-term impact of financial decisions. Here are 4 key takeaways: 1. Start Early and Stay Consistent: The Investor’s path demonstrates that starting early and consistently saving and investing leads to long-term wealth. The earlier you begin investing, the more time your money has to grow through compound interest. If
As DEI programs face rollback, study highlights Black women
by Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent
As diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) programs face increasing dismantling across corporate America, the challenges Black women face in predominantly White workplaces are more critical than ever.
Dr. Elizabeth Linos, Emma Bloomberg
Associate Professor of Public Policy and Management at Harvard University, appeared on the Black Press’ Let It Be Known to discuss her groundbreaking study, “Intersectional Peer Effects at Work: The Effects of White Co-Workers on Black Women’s Careers.” The research explores how the racial composition of teams affects the career trajectories of Black women.
Dr. Linos’ findings are seen as especially relevant considering ongoing debates about the effectiveness and future of DE&I initiatives. Her study, which tracked 9,037 new hires in a professional services firm, revealed that Black women are disproportionately impacted by being placed on Whiter teams. Black women were 51 percent more likely to leave the firm within two years and faced a significant decrease in their chances of promotion when working with predominantly White colleagues.
“One of the main metrics used to define employee success is billable hours, and so, regardless of your race and gender, employees who report lower billable hours are also likely to receive lower performance scores,” Dr. Linos told Let It Be Known News. She added, “The
‘penalty’—how much your performance evaluation drops based on a reduction in billables—is larger for Black women than other groups.”
The research emphasizes that Black women assigned to whiter teams often logged fewer billable and more training hours, which directly correlated with lower performance evaluations. This created a cycle of disadvantages that reduced their chances for promotion. “Ultimately, I interpret these findings as confirmation that while, as a society, we may be making progress in diversifying workplaces on some dimensions, Black women may still face additional hurdles for promotion at work,” Linos stated.
Dr. Linos’ findings are alarming, mainly as DE&I initiatives—designed to counter such disparities—are increasingly under scrutiny and at risk of being rolled back. The study also uncovered that these challenges were not universal across all demographic groups. Hispanic, Asian, and Black men did not experience the same adverse effects from working with White co-workers. In contrast, Black women were uniquely impacted by these team dynamics, highlighting the intersectional nature of the barriers they face.
Moreover, the study showed that when Black women worked alongside more Black co-workers, their turnover rates decreased, and their overall workplace experience improved. “This is in line with a common finding in the literature that having more similar peers (in this case, Black co-workers) can have a positive effect
on retention,” Dr. Linos
and her colleagues wrote. As discussions about equity in the workplace continue, the study offers a sobering reminder of how “neutral” workplace practices—such as team assignments and performance metrics—can disproportionately harm Black women. “Seemingly neutral practices around staffing and promotion that rely on peers and networking can have a negative impact on equity at work,” Linos said. “We need more research on how White employees can adjust their behavior to ensure they don’t contribute to existing racialized and gendered dynamics at work.”
“Social Security benefits and SSI payments will increase in 2025, helping tens of millions of people keep up with expenses even as inflation has started to cool,” said Martin O’Malley, commissioner of Social Security.
But according to AARP, when the projected Medicare increase is announced, most retirees will receive a net gain of only $10.20 in 2025.

2. Live Below Your Means With A Purpose: A higher salary doesn’t automatically translate to wealth. The Investor’s ability to live below his means and save 15 percent of his income allowed him to build wealth slowly and steadily. The Indulger, despite earning the same salary, spent everything he earned, leaving him with nothing to show after 30 years. “Big Hat, no Cattle.”
3. Avoid Lifestyle Creep: As your income increases, it’s tempting to increase your spending to match. However, the Investor shows that resisting lifestyle inflation and using salary increases to boost savings and investments is a more effective way to grow wealth.
4. Balance Enjoyment and Planning: While it’s important to enjoy life in the present, balancing immediate gratification with long-term planning is crucial. The Investor finds a balance between enjoying his life today and ensuring financial security for tomorrow. The Indulger, on the other hand, enjoys his income today but sacrifices his future well-being. Choose the Investor’s Path for Financial Success
The story of the Investor and the Indulger illustrates the profound impact that financial choices have over time. Both individuals start with the same salary and job, but their vastly different approaches to money lead them down very different financial paths. The Investor retired RICH. The Indulger retired BROKE.
The Investor’s disciplined approach to saving and investing allows him to build a million-dollar portfolio, providing him with financial security and freedom in the future. Meanwhile, the Indulger, despite enjoying a luxurious lifestyle, finds himself with no savings after 30 years, dependent entirely on his ability to keep earn-

vancement. “The internet has exposed many different ways to bring in extra income, and you just have to figure out which one is right for you,” he adds.
To help people manage discretionary spending, Payton recommends a more hands-on approach using the cash envelope method. “You allocate literal cash for discretionary expenses, and when the envelope is empty, that’s it,” he says. “Using cash rather than credit or debit cards forces you to think twice before making unnecessary purchases.”
Imagine heading to Best
Buy to buy a $1,500 TV on Black Friday. “If you swipe your card, it’s easy to ignore the impact, but if you’re laying down $1,500 in $20 bills, you feel that sting,” Payton says. Financial guidance from experts can be invaluable. Many organizations offer free or low-cost financial literacy programs, and connecting with a financial advisor like Payton can provide personalized strategies to help you break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle. As Payton advises, it starts with “acknowledging your financial habits and being mentally ready to make a change.”
ty may find it hard to pay their bills,” Jo Ann Jenkins, AARP’s chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Social Security is the primary source of income for 40 percent of older Americans.” AARP’s concerns are validated by findings in an April report from the Society of Actuaries Research Institute titled Retirement Wealth by Race and Ethnicity: Differences, Trends and Contributing Factors.
“Social Security provides a near-universal basic benefit, but many older adults, especially Black and Hispanic/ Latino people and many people of other and multiple races and ethnicities, still struggle to meet the expenses they incur that are above those basic benefits because they have substantially fewer retirement savings, even after accounting for aspects such as education and income, than is the case for white households,” states the report.
Key findings from the report include:
White households with a college degree had a median retirement wealth of $273,500, compared to $160,323 for Hispanic/Latino households, and $119,000 for Black households with a college degree; and Over the past three
decades, Black and Hispanic/Latino households, as well as households of other or multiple races or ethnicities, owned on average between one-third and 60 percent of the retirement wealth of White households. There is no robust indication of those gaps becoming smaller. These retiree racial wealth gaps are framed as elder poverty in another report, Who Counts as “Poor” in America?, from the New York-based Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis. “[Imagine] being over 65 years old and trying to survive on $15,060 a year,” states the report. “According to official U.S. government poverty levels in 2024, one is considered ‘poor’ in America—and thus qualifying for certain assistance—if their annual income is $15,060 or less for a single person, $31,200 for a family of four.”
The next Congress would be well-advised to get serious about the future solvency of Social Security. No one wants or should expect to become older and poorer.

It’s time to sing a new song!
(TriceEdneyWire.com)—In just a few days the world will learn who we really are in America. All voters will have a say in the matter whether they use their vote or not. If you don’t vote, you’re helping to make the wrong decision. Whether we vote or not, we’ve seen and heard the best of who we are. Sadly, we’ve also seen and heard the worst of who some are. For young people who are eligible to vote for the first time, I caution you to pay attention to the candidates. Listen to what they are saying. Check out their background to see what they have been doing to make our country better for all and not just for themselves at the expense of people in need.
All candidates are on trial, and we, the voters determine who is telling the truth, who is respectful, who has no problem pledging to work for us instead of for ruthless leaders like Russia’s and North Korea’s leaders, and “them that’s already got and already mistreating their citizens.” Yes, we, the American people are on trial.
At the Presidential level, we know Donald Trump has already shown his intentions. Some of his former staff, former supporters, and party members have told us who he is. They’ve told us he disrespects our military and wants to use them not for the American people, but against the American people! They tell us he is
an admirer of the ruthless Hitler—a known killer of millions of innocent people. He longs for an army like Hitler’s. He calls people against him vermin and he plans to imprison them. Maybe he means us! He wants to mass deport innocent people who came to America seeking a better life. He’s shown us what he would do to those of us who are children of ancestors who were violently uprooted from their lives and families in Africa and brought to this country. We know he’s limited us to “Black Jobs” and no matter how educated or successful some of us have already become against great odds. Yes, we are all on trial no matter who we are. In the Presidential race, Trump’s key competitor is Vice-President Kamala Harris. He has called her every name that’s more fitting of him. He is a multi-number of times convicted criminal. Vice-President Harris on the other hand is one with vast experience prosecuting people like Trump. She is highly educated, a great speaker to share her plans with
the American people that she has to make our lives better. She tells the truth. She brings plans to improve our health care, not to destroy existing health plans with just a concept, but real plans. She brings us joy when she appears and doesn’t just criticize people who are in need of help. She offers a plan to save the lives of women by bringing back Roe v. Wade rights, jobs for all, funds to help new parents, money to help first time home buyers, and more good things our country can well afford. People come out to her rallies that increased as she campaigned to urge her on without hateful, fearful language. Thus far, she’s bringing out up to 30,000 people in person and millions online to cheer her on for showing people how we can turn the page from the old hateful, jealous, lying, racist, sexist, anti-migrants, anti-DEI behavior. She has a background of success and fairness—exactly what we need to protect our democracy! Just a few days before the election, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times are showing their fear of what Trump has promised—shutting down press that’s against him! Let’s show them we are not afraid. Vote from now to November 5th. Show them what courage is! (Dr. E. Faye Williams, President of The Dick Gregory Society.)
The joys of voting
(TriceEdneyWire.com)—I love election season! I love the act of voting. I’ve been loving it since I was seven and my mom let me pull the lever on her vote for John F. Kennedy in 1960. The voting site was just a block from our house, in a neighbor’s garage, where three voting booths were set up, along with a coffee urn and some cookies set out on a paper plate. The thick Slavic woman checked Mom off without asking for ID—the neighborhood was small and everyone knew each other. Help yourself to coffee, Marie, the lady said to Mom. Little girl, you may have a cookie and there is some juice over there. There was, indeed, a pretty pitcher of orange juice next to the plate of cookies. Mom poured herself a cup of coffee, took a sip, then told the lady in charge that she had to run to work and get this one (me) to school. On the short walk to the polling place Mom told me about Black people in Mississippi, where she was from, and how we fought for the right to vote. She spoke of Medgar Evers and Fannie Lou Hamer and told me to “remember those names”. She said I should never miss the opportunity to vote, “no matter what”. Then we stepped into the curtained “booth”, and she said, “who are we voting for”, and I said “Kennedy”. She said, “show me”, and I pointed to JFK’s name on the ballot. She let me punch the card, then she did other punches for state and local races. Then I got to push the lever that would allow our votes to be counted. On the walk home, I peppered her with questions. Who are those other people you voted for? Why is voting so important? Why were people killed just because

they wanted to vote?
Remember your questions, she said, and we can talk this evening. But remember this, more than anything else. Remember that voting is a sacred duty. More than sixty years later, I still remember that day. I remember Mom’s intensity about voting. And I remember that evening, her telling the five of her children about voting. Brother, a year or so younger than me, only partly understood. The twins were four, and they probably didn’t fully follow the conversation, but they liked it when we all sat together and talked. From that day until this, I’ve loved voting.
I don’t think I’ve missed an opportunity to vote in my life. I love going to a polling place and enjoying the buzz of activity as people sign in, queue up, and wait for an available voting booth. With technology, the energy is a bit different, as many as 45 percent of us vote by mail. Thanks to COVID, people have changed their voting habits, with mail ballots often far more convenient than going to a polling place. But I miss the buzz of the crush of people, the random conversation one engages while waiting on line. I saw some of that energy, when Roland Martin broadcast from Friendship West Baptist Church on the first day of voting in Dallas.
There, the lines snaked around a corner, but people were in good
spirits. Voting is a communal act, and even if it less so because so many vote by mail, the lines and the camaraderie are the spirit of democracy. Some Republican have been trying to steal that joy, making early voting more difficult, and using other voting suppression tactics to keep voters away from the polls. And then some don’t need suppression tactics to keep them away. These are the people who have decided that their votes don’t matter, even though we know how powerful a single vote can be, not to mention collective votes. Rev. Jesse Jackson used to say that “the hands that picked peaches can pick Presidents.”
In other words, every single one of us holds power in our hands. If Black people votes were reflective of our population size, we could have elected Stacey Abrams governor of Georgia. Our collective votes brought us two Democratic senators from Georgia, Rev. Raphael Warnock and activist John Osoff. But some are not swayed by these facts, preferring to sit out the voting opportunity because they think the system is warped. I am saddened by those who will not experience the joy of voting. Voting is a joy, a pleasure, a privilege, and an opportunity that every citizen must avail themselves of. Sure, the system isn’t perfect. Indeed, it has inequality at its roots when once, only propertied White men could exercise the franchise. Now, we can all vote, but many don’t. I will proudly and gleefully cast my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris on November 5. Join the joy. Vote! (TriceEdneyWire.com)—“Starting when I was 15, my life was not my own. For years, I had no control over what happened to me. Being in the spotlight makes me wary and self-conscious again. I am overwhelmed with fear that an overzealous Trump supporter might take matters into his or her hands. Doing something simple like picking up dinner for the family or going to the aquarium now fills me with dread. I’m constantly looking over my shoulder, keeping an eye out for people who stare too long. Like a soldier always on high alert, I can never enjoy myself fully, with all the adrenaline that comes with that. It’s a scary feeling.”—Yusef Salaam Matias Reyes violently raped a 28-year-old woman who was jogging in Central Park on April 19, 1989. He beat her so badly she remained in a coma for 12 days. Reyes confessed to the attack in 2002. DNA evidence confirmed his guilt. The five men wrongly convicted of that brutal attack and another assault the same night were cleared of all wrongdoing.
But Donald Trump, who advocated for their execution before they even had been indicted, can’t stop lying about them.
During the September 10 presidential debate, Trump falsely claimed, “They pled guilty. And I said, well, if they pled guilty they badly hurt a person, killed a person ultimately.”
Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron Brown, and Korey Wise—now known as the Exonerated Five—this week sued Trump for defamation.
“At the September 10, 2024, presidential debate, Defendant Trump falsely stated that Plaintiffs killed an individual and pled guilty to the crime. These statements are demonstrably false. Plaintiffs never pled guilty to any crime and were subsequently cleared of all wrongdoing. Further, the victims of the Central Park assaults were not killed.”
Trump can hardly claim ignorance about the case. In 2013, he attacked the acclaimed documentary The Central Park Five as “a one-sided piece of garbage.” When New York City reached a $41 million settlement with the exonerated men in 2014, Trump penned a guest editorial in the New York Daily News calling the settlement “a disgrace.” A 2019 television miniseries about the case, When They See Us, was streamed by more than 23 million viewers within a month of its release
and was one of the most celebrated television dramas of the year. In the immediate aftermath of the Central Park Attack, Trump spent a reported $85,000 to place a full-page ad in four New York City newspapers on May 1, 1989, calling for a reinstatement of the death penalty and decrying “roving bands of wild criminals”—an unmistakably reference to the teens, who had already been dubbed “The Wolf Pack.” Trump’s ad “contributed to an atmosphere that deprived these men of a fair trial,” according to Barry Scheck, a founder of Innocence Project and one of the lawyers who worked with prosecutors to reinvestigate the case Scheck. “He was the firestarter,” Salaam said. He was 15 at the time of his arrest and served seven years in prison.
Salaam, now a New York City Council member, tried to correct Trump’s false statement and seek an apology immediately after the debate. According to the lawsuit, Salaam approached Trump in the post-debate “spin room” and said, “President Trump, I’m Yusef Salaam, one of the Exonerated Five. How are you doing?”
Trump inexplicably responded, “Ah, you’re on my side then.” Salaam responded, “No, no, no, I’m not on your side.” Trump waved his hand and walked away.

Democracy dies in darkness
(TriceEdneyWire.com)—As owner of the Washington Post, one has to wonder if Jeff Bezos reads his own newspaper with any sense of appreciation or concern.
For the first time in over 30 years the Washington Post announced its editorial board will not endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election. The Post has regularly endorsed presidential candidates since 1976 starting with Democrat Jimmy Carter.
As a nation we have a free press. As responsible journalists, newspapers have a professional obligation to state the facts and the truth to the public, but newspapers are also allowed to express their opinions. In addition, the owner of any newspaper has the right to weigh in on decisions made by its editorial board. But this election cycle is different. This presidential election is unlike any from previous years. The surprising non-endorsement ignores the paper’s own factual reporting which, for years, outlined in specific details Donald Trump’s threat to the future of American democracy.
Politically, the Washington Post is a center left newspaper which is highly respected for its accuracy and direct presentation of events in this toxic environment of “fake news”. It has always fulfilled its role in sustaining democracy by being a reliable and consistent source of information.
The non-endorsement comes off as unfinished business. Similar to a court case, the newspaper endorsement would have served as the final argument presented to the jury of voters. By failing to provide a much needed summation, the silence resulting from a non-endorsement has become itself an endorsement.
The non-endorsement was a one man decision, according to a statement from the
David W. Marshall
Washington Post Guild. It states, “According to our own reporters and Guild members, an endorsement for Harris was already drafted, and the decision not to publish was made by the Post’s owner, Jeff Bezos.” Columnist Karen Attiah wrote that “today has been an absolute stab in the back.”
Attiah is not alone in feeling betrayed. Readers of the paper also feel betrayed. The Post is already seeing subscription cancellations from loyal readers. Current and former staff members feel betrayed. Robert Kagan—a former advisor to Republican John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, who last year warned that a “Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable” resigned from his position as the Post’s editor at large in response to the paper’s decision. Apparently, Jeff Bezos didn’t heed the warning. Michele Norris followed Kagan by also resigning as opinion columnist, a position she held since 2019.
After multi-billionaire dollar Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos bought The Washington Post in 2013, the Post’s news operation used its abundant resources to thoroughly investigate the danger of a second Trump presidency. “Democracy Dies in Darkness” became the newspaper’s official slogan in 2017.
It illustrates how good journalism is essential to democracy. When journalism is at its best, it helps citizens to hold those in power accountable, uncovers corruption and ensures transparency. If the press is silenced, democracy will suffer. Darkness represents ignorance, lack of knowledge and oppression. The phrase “Democracy Dies in Darkness” is a warning to us all. If people are kept in the dark, their ignorance could lead to oppression.
The press is the light that illuminates the darkness. It ensures that people are aware of what is going on around them and empowered to make necessary changes. The phrase acknowledges the fact that the free press is under threat from those in power who prefer to operate in the dark.
The Washington Post is making a powerful and defiant statement that they will not be intimidated or silenced while continuing to keep those with power accountable for their actions. Unfortunately, Jeff Bezos didn’t hold up to the test when submitting to the political and economic pressures. He may have turned a defiant statement of truth into harsh reality which is about to come true.
Amazon holds contracts with the government worth billions. Amazon and the space exploration company Blue Origin are among Bezos-owned businesses that still compete for lucrative federal government contracts. Executives from Bezos’ aerospace company met with Donald Trump on the same day the newspaper prevented its editorial team from publishing an endorsement for Kamala Harris.
A retired Washington Post metro reporter, Robert McCartney, wrote on social media that there is “speculation in the newsroom that owner Jeff Bezos may want to avoid risk of endangering Amazon’s government contracts if Trump wins.”
Regardless, of who wins or loses the election, the Washington Post, as a strong pillar in the free press, took a major credibility hit. The Washington Post reporters and editors who remain the light that illuminates the darkness may not be able to overcome its owner who places the business interest of Amazon and Blue Origin ahead of American democracy.

The audacity of accepting Trump’s challenge
In 2016, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump asked Black Americans a simple question: “What do you have to lose?”
Trump initially posed the question during a campaign stop in North Carolina. At his next speech in Michigan, Trump wanted Black voters to consider how much African American communities have suffered under Democratic control.
Trump cited poverty, high unemployment, failing educational institutions, and violent crime. Trump reiterated that, “If you keep voting for the same people, you will keep getting exactly the same result.” He cautioned that Democrats would choose to hire refugees over unemployed Black youths who had become refugees in their own country.
Democrats condemned Trump for presuming that all Black communities were impoverished and claimed that Trump was hopelessly out of touch with Black voters.
According to Pew Research, during the 2016 presidential election, Black voter turnout fell for the first time in 20 years.
The 7-point drop from prior presidential elections was the most significant on record. Despite the dip in Black votes, Trump received 8 percent of the Black vote—the highest level of support for a Republican candidate since George W. Bush in 2000.
Evidently, a few Black people, primarily men, accepted Trump’s challenge.
During Trump’s administration, inflation was at 2 percent, wages adjusted for inflation were rising, Black unemployment was at its lowest point in American history, and the economy as a whole thrived.
Trump lost reelection to Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
In defeat, Trump received more Black votes than expected. Democrats denied that Trump’s Black support increased significantly. According to the AP Vote-
A
(TriceEdneyWire.com)—The best way to overcome “The Big Lie” is with a bigger truth! For this reason, supporters of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz should set a stretch goal of securing 100,000,000 votes on November 5, 2024.
This is 19,000,000 more votes than Joe Biden received in 2020. Only 66 percent of eligible voters turned out for that contested election. Even with overwhelming evidence that no fraud took place in the tabulation of the vote and after over 60 court challenges, Donald Trump stubbornly held on to the lie that the election was stolen from him. And while it is clear that he knew he lost, the closeness of the count in a number of battleground states allowed him to convince his followers that he had, in fact, won the election. Therefore, this time around, Trump should be defeated by such an overwhelming number of votes cast that there will be little room for any plausible dispute about who won the election.
Governing with a divided and suspicious electorate undermines the legitimate authority of candidates who won in a free and fair election. So what are the persuasive arguments in favor of a Harris / Walz candidacy? Well, to begin, let’s start with the economic plan being advanced by Harris. Even the business community is lining up behind her plans to strengthen the U.S. economy. In a recent Wall Street Journal poll (conducted October 4th – 8th), 68 percent of respondents said
If you are reading this indoors, there is a good chance there are hundreds of invisible plastic particles floating around in the room you are in. There is also a good chance you may be breathing some of them in.
And we are not just breathing in plastic pollution. We are eating it and drinking it. To add insult to injury, much of that plastic pollution came from items like plastic water bottles that consumers thought would be recycled.
The world’s largest producer of plastic polymers for single-use plastics is ExxonMobil. Right now, Attorney General Rob Bonta of California, along with the Sierra Club and other environmental groups, is suing ExxonMobil for their years-long campaign of deception about the recyclability of plastic products.
In discussing the suit, Attorney General Bonta told a story of a 14-year old who “was just distraught over the fact that all of the plastic items that she carefully selected to make sure they have the chasing arrows on it and then make sure that after she used it, she placed it thoughtfully and diligently in the blue container for recycling—that 95 percent of the time, that item was not recycled.”
The world produces about 430 million tons of plastic each year. Much of that is single-use plastic that ends up in the environment. About 22 million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes alone each year, with half of it going into Lake Michigan. And the plastic-contaminated water from lakes, rivers, and streams ends up in our drinking water and our oceans. Globally, about 12 million tons of plastic enter our oceans each year. That is a garbage truck worth of plastic every minute. Plastics do not decompose. They just break down into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic, down to tiny particles
Cast survey, Trump had gained only 2 percentage points from 2016, while Edison Research’s 2020 surveys show that 87 percent of Black votes went to Biden, 12 percent to Trump, with 18 percent of Black men and 8 percent of Black women voting for Trump.
Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters openly chastised the 18 percent of Black men who did not vote for the Democratic candidate. She said, “For those Black young men who think they can align themselves with Trump, not only are they terribly mistaken, but I will never, ever forgive them for undermining the possibility to help their own people and their own community.”
The Biden administration failed to meet the economic aspirations of their own constituents. Surprisingly, President Biden decided not to run for reelection, and Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the Democratic presidential nominee, but at this point in time, 73 percent of Americans believed the country was heading in the wrong direction.
The Harris campaign turned Kamala into the candidate for change, as if she were running against Trump in 2020, and she was never a part of the Biden administration. If their campaign strategy was to distance Harris from Biden’s policies, she needed to explain Biden’s failures and how she would fix them.
Especially concerning the economy.
Harris’ campaign suffered a setback when she proposed a federal ban on price gouging in the food industry to lower grocery costs. Both liberal and conservative economists stated Harris’ idea amounts
to government price fixing and will create more problems than it solves, potentially leading to food shortages. When asked about Harris’ proposal, Jason Furman, an economic advisor during the Obama administration, said, “This is not sensible policy, and I think the biggest hope is that it ends up being a lot of rhetoric and no reality.”
A recent Howard University study in swing states—Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Georgia—found that the majority of Black voters favored Harris, but 18 percent of Black men supported former President Trump due to his economic policies.
Since Democrats don’t believe there are Black men who will vote for their own economic interests instead of voting for the candidate that looks like them, they have concluded that there must be a more nefarious reason for Black men not to support Harris. Former Democratic President Barack Obama believed that these Black men weren’t behind Harris because they exhibited the same toxic masculinity as Trump, and he felt it was his responsibility to expose it to the public.
Obama remarked that Black women have always had our back. They raised us, worked hard, and made sacrifices. When the system failed us, Black women marched and protested on our behalf. Now you (n-words) are thinking of not voting or even endorsing someone that has a history of disparaging you (n-words). Now you (n-words) believe that putting women down is a sign of being a man. That is not acceptable. What wasn’t acceptable to the 18 percent of Black men who support Trump’s economic policies was when Harris was asked—what would she have done differently than President Biden during the past four years?
And Harris said, “There’s not a thing that comes to mind.”
they thought inflation would rise under a second Trump term compared to a Harris plan.
In the same Wall Street Journal article, 65 percent of economist said they saw Trump’s policies adding more to the nation’s deficits compared to Harris’ policy agenda. Also, 45 percent to 37 percent of economists expect economic output to expand faster under Harris.
Harris is also considering tax breaks for large companies that share profits with their workers. She wants to jump-start her economic opportunity for Americas proposal with the following:
• $25,000 for down-payment assistance for first time home purchases;
• $50,000 for small businesses;
• $6,000 child tax credit.
Building on the work of the Biden-Harris Administration, she intends to continue growing the number of infrastructure jobs and employment opportunities in the “Green economy.” Job training is also a critical component of her plans to reach out to those left behind during the ongo-
ing tech revolution. There is a string of powerful reasons that Harris-Walz must aim for 100,000,000 votes to win:
• Kamala Harris wants a Justice Department that is used to protect all Americans and not for retribution or revenge against the president’s adversaries.
• Kamala Harris wants women to control their own bodies and not have governmental invasion of the womb. One of America’s most cherished ideals is freedom which is also one of the most galvanizing themes of her candidacy.
• Harris wants an immigration policy that defines the best in the American tradition, policies that secure the border in an orderly and systematic fashion but it is also humane and respects the dignity of all human beings.
• Finally, Harris wants to bring Americans together. She has reached out to Republicans and Independents in an effort to unify a very polarized country. She knows that the wisdom in sacred scripture is instructive: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
Her aspirations are quintessentially American. Her policy pronouncements are inclusive. She is ready to be president for all Americans. For these and other reasons, setting a goal for 100,000,000 votes just makes good sense!

called microplastics and nanoplastics.
As a result, microplastics are everywhere and in everything. The plastic bags and bottles that find their way into landfills and waterways eventually become microplastics. Microplastics are also tiny enough to be airborne.
Dr. Sherri A. Mason is a leader in plastic pollution research who has called attention to freshwater contamination from microplastics. She has pointed out, “Because we find plastic pollution within fresh water throughout the planet, it’s not surprising that we find it in our tap water. In 2017 we examined 159 samples of tap water collected from 14 different countries. Eighty-eight percent of these samples showed evidence of microplastic contamination, with an average of 5.5 particles per liter. Almost all (98 percent) of these particles were microfibers, which suggests that air is the primary source of contamination.” Plastics get into our waterways in a variety of ways—“microbeads” in shampoos and laundry detergents, small pellets used in pre-production manufacturing known as “nurdles,” and more ways. Nurdles are a major source of the microplastic contamination in the Great Lakes because many manufacturing facilities in the region use them. All that plastic then enters the food chain. One way is that it breaks down into tiny plastic grains that are mistaken as algae and microplankton
by fish. Over the past four years studies have found microplastics in human placentas, breast milk, and liver. More recent research over the past year has now found them in people’s lungs, testicles and brains.
The studies that found microplastics present in testicles found them in every single sample analyzed. Scientists think it could be linked to downward trends in sperm counts and fertility. The microplastics found in human brains were found in the olfactory bulb, suggesting they could be getting inhaled through the nose.
Phoebe Stapleton, a professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Rutgers University, told CNN, “I really do think that plastics are going to be in every place in the body that we look. This is just more evidence.”
We know plastic contamination is toxic. Plastic is made from petrochemicals that, in addition to reproductive health issues, can cause cancer, endocrine disruption, neurological disorders, immune disorders, and more.
?As our awareness of plastic contamination in every facet of our lives and part of our bodies grows, let us remember Big Oil produces petrochemicals behind plastics. So add that to the list of ways—in addition to pollution, climate change, and the megastorms the climate crisis produces—the fossil fuel industry is taking a disastrous toll on our health. The lawsuit to hold ExxonMobil accountable is a good start in addressing the problem, but we also need to address the microplastic contamination that is already so prevalent. And we need to change and reduce our use of plastics. (Ben Jealous is the Executive Director of the Sierra Club and a Professor of Practice at the University of Pennsylvania.)
