Malik Yakini

BLACK FOOD SOVEREIGNTY ACTIVIST

Malik Yakini: Visionary Behind Detroit People’s Food Co-op

The Detroit People’s Food Co-op (DPFC) recently opened its doors in Detroit’s North End, bringing Malik Yakini’s vision of a Black-led, community-driven grocery store to life Spanning over 30,000 square feet, the DPFC is housed within the Detroit Food Commons and provides not just a supermarket, but also office space for the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network (DBCFSN), a banquet hall, and commercial kitchens. The grand opening celebration marked a significant milestone for the community

Yakini, the former executive director of the DBCFSN and architect of the $22 million project, has been a steadfast advocate for food sovereignty in Detroit for decades. His commitment to creating a local food system that empowers the Black community and keeps profits within the neighborhood is at the core of his work. This dedication has earned him the Michigan Chronicle Men of Excellence Man of the Year Award for 2024

The DPFC, with over 2,600+ member-owners, stands as Detroit’s first Black-led grocery co-op in years. It prioritizes local produce and products from Detroit’s Black farmers, creating a closed-loop system that benefits the community.

“The profits that are made from that are going to employ people from the neighborhood who work in the store,” says Yakini, emphasizing the co-op’s role in fostering economic and social resilience.

Yakini’s journey began with his activism for Black liberation, which evolved into a focus on food sovereignty a concept he describes as a community’s ability to shape its own food system He critiques the current food economy, noting that most of the food consumed in Detroit’s Black community comes from outside and is sold by outsiders, often without respect for the community

Under Yakini’s leadership, the DPFC not only addresses food access but also aims to change the dynamics of the local food economy By ensuring the building was designed and constructed by Black-owned firms, Yakini underscores his commitment to Black leadership at every level.

As the Michigan Chronicle Men of Excellence Man of the Year, Malik Yakini’s work with the DPFC demonstrates the power of community-led initiatives in creating sustainable and equitable food systems His achievements provide a compelling model for community empowerment and selfdetermination.

John James

CHAIRMAN | JAMES GROUP INTERNATIONAL

John A. James: Recognized for Transforming Logistics and Championing Industry Equity

John A. James, Chairman of James Group International, has been awarded the 2024 Michigan Chronicle Men of Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to his relentless pursuit of innovation and equity in the logistics industry. Born in Starkville, Mississippi, James’ service as a commissioned officer in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Vietnam War earned him a Bronze Star, an Army Commendation Medal, and equivalent accolades from the Vietnamese government

Upon leaving the military, James furthered his education in Business Administration at Wayne State University from 1969 to 1972 In 1971, while working at Chrysler’s headquarters, a pivotal opportunity arose when he hauled beer for a local distributor. Despite the trucking industry's exclusionary practices, James saw a promising venture Partnering with his uncle, Calvin Outlaw, he co-founded O-J Transport Company in southwest Detroit in 1973. Initially met with staunch opposition from established regional trucking companies and denied entry by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC), James faced a significant legal battle. His appeal to the Supreme Court, though unsuccessful, highlighted the racial discrimination endemic in the industry.

James’ perseverance paid off in 1978 when the Michigan Public Service Commission permitted O-J Transport to haul automotive parts and other commodities statewide The Commission's chairman, Daniel Demlow, acknowledged the discriminatory nature of previous policies, leading to a landmark decision by the ICC that granted James' company national operational rights the first such recognition for an African American entrepreneur.

Under James' leadership, O-J Transport evolved into James Group International, now a $52 million enterprise specializing in transportation, supply-chain management, and logistics His advocacy extends beyond business; in 2021, he championed a $650 million, 10-year plan to revitalize the freight terminal in southwest Detroit, projected to generate 4,500 jobs This award celebrates John A James not just for his business acumen but for his indomitable spirit and enduring contributions to the industry and community.

The Creed MenofExcellence

In a time when honor, morale, and dignity have seemingly become lost virtues, there remains a remnant of men who stand as beacons of light. It is in honor of this sentiment that the Michigan Chronicle salutes Men of Excellence. The African American male has always been looked upon to provide for his family, protect and serve his country, and lead in times of uncertainty. He is called upon to train boys to be men, while setting the bar for our young women as to where their standards should be. The essence of a man is never defined by gender alone, but by the content of his character. Men of Excellence are those who exemplify strength by standing firm in the face of adversity, leadership in periods of struggle, compassion in times of peril, and integrity in the midst of opposition. Through proven success and selfless dedication to the community, these exemplary men are lauded as role models for the next generation of excellence. They are our community and business leaders, husbands, fathers, and protectors. The Michigan Chronicle salutes each and every one of the 2024 Men of Excellence Honorees.
