“Gun violence is more of a reality in our children’s everyday lives than in the older segments of so ciety,” said Rev. Eleanor Williams, president of the North Side Partnership Project, in a release pro vided to the New Pitts burgh Courier. The North Side Partnership Project is a youth-serving nonprofit that partnered with Cease FirePA and The Great er Pittsburgh Coalition against Violence to distrib ute the survey to the young people in their program.

“The survey results are more than troubling and should bring a laser light to all of us as to how deep the pain of gun violence has impacted the lives and minds of our youth,” added Tim Stevens, Chairman and CEO of the Black Po litical Empowerment Proj ect and co-convener of The Greater Pittsburgh Coali tion Against Violence. Born free in Philadelphia, Pa., he became a fierce anti-slavery activist, an inventor and successful businessman. In fact, the sail-mak ing company he founded made him one of the wealthiest Black men in the nation. Forten and AME Church founder Richard Allen organized the First Convention of Color in 1817. He went back and forth on the issue of “re-Africanization,” which called for the return of Blacks to Africa. He financially supported Paul Cuffee’s venture in the West African nation of Sierra Leone, but he later turned against the American Colonization Society and its efforts to return free American Blacks to the West African nation of Liberia.

• SEPTEMBER 6 1865— One of the great White he roes of Black history, Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens , first proposes an addition to the Freemen’s Bureau Act which would have required the confiscation of land from former slave owners and the redistribution to former slaves in “40 acre lots.” Although Stevens was at the time the most powerful person in the U.S. Congress and a friend of Blacks, he was unable to get the mea sure passed. The so-called “40 acres and a mule,” which promised to aid Black economic development after slavery was defeated in Congress on Feb. 5, 1866 by a 136 to 36 vote. The lopsided nature of the vote reflected lingering pro-slave owner sympa thies in the Congress and a general lack of support for the freed slaves. Madam C.J. new doll Madam C.J. The showcasing of 50 Af rican American men do ing positive things in the Pittsburgh community is proof that perception is not reality. And it’s not “just 50” Black men doing positive things— there are many more, which is why the Couri er aims to hold its “Men of Excellence” ceremony on a yearly basis, so that more Black men can be highlighted in the longterm.“This is amazing,” ex pressed Brandon White, a 2021 honoree. “Never would have imagined that I would get a chance to be part of a group like this. Being able to come together, build a network together, and just really spend time encouraging, uplifting one another, there’s nothing like this.” Each “Men of Excel lence” class features a legacy honoree; in 2019, it was Bill Strickland, the former president and CEO of Manchester Bidwell Corporation; in 2021, it was Bishop Lo ran E. He also served as president of the Pitts burgh NAACP. “We are excited to once again showcase these outstanding men from throughout the Pitts burgh area. COURIER EDITOR AND PUBLISHER ROD DOSS, LEFT, GREETS MEN OF EXCELLENCE HONOREES.

The date was February 7, 1996. The place was the Regent Theatre (now the Kelly Strayhorn Theater). This was the era when the New Pittsburgh Courier was published on Wednes days and Saturdays. That evening many peo ple in the sports world and beyond had gathered to honor the late, great city editor Frank Bolden and to also premiere the HBO documentary, “Journey of the African American Ath lete.”Two Pittsburgh Public Schools athletes, Naron Jackson and Mike Pupa, were also profiled. Jackson is the son of the heralded Schenley High School bas ketball legend, Jack Jack son. What makes this story unique is that when I re turned to Pittsburgh in 1990, my mother gave me a little duplex located at 2925 Spring Way in Law renceville. Directly across from the house was a play ground nicknamed, “the tot lot.” It was equipped with a full-sized basketball court. I knew that I would have to do most of my writ ing during the late morn ing-early afternoon hours because like a fine-tuned Rolex, Courtney Wallace Sr. and Naron Jackson would be on the court re fining and defining their skills after school, hour af ter hour, until dusk, eight days a week. There were many days that I would look out of my second-floor foyer window observing their evolving skills. After high school, Courtney Wal lace Sr. went on to become a star player at Duquesne University and went on to play professionally in South America (in Chile), His “tot-lot” partner, Naron Jackson, went pro with the American Basketball Asso ciation.Fastforward to the new millennium. The Neigh borhood Academy, located in Pittsburgh, is a private school. A few years back, the school was on the verge of creating a basketball program. The head of the school, Dr. Anthony Wil liams, approached Jordan Marks to be the head coach of the program. Marks served as a staff member of the University of Pitts burgh men’s basketball program under the former Pitt head coach, Jamie Dixon. Coach Marks re calls that Dr. Williams in formed him that they had two great players coming from the 8th grade; one of them was Courtney Wal lace“BuildingJr. a program with a lot of young guys can be challenging,” Coach Marks said. “We didn’t have a se nior on the roster last year. Courtney had to mature a lot, and he was very coach able. Playing 30 minutes a game out of 32 as a fresh man is never easy. But he took it and ran with it and he got better and better as the season progressed. We started three freshmen for the majority of our first year (2021), but we went to the playoffs and won the first playoff game in school history.”Thissummer, Courtney was fortunate enough to receive his first Division 1 scholarship offer from for mer Pitt standout Ronald Ramon, who is now an as sistant coach at Fordham University, in New York City. When Ramon came to see Courtney, he played exceptionally well against players three years older thanTherehim.is great admira tion from Courtney for his coach and his school. “I could have gone to an other school, but my focus is being a student before playing basketball,” the now-sophomore told the Courier. “I’m not sure how many high schools were interested in me, but I just knew that The Neighbor hood Academy is where I wanted to go.” When I asked Coach Marks about Courtney’s work ethic, his response takes me back to the “totlot” and the work habits of Courtney Wallace Sr. “He has called me numerous times asking me, ‘Coach, can you give me the gym before you go to work?’ This was at 6 p.m. just to work out with his dad. Now he’s inviting his team mates which reinforces the advice that I’ve given him regarding being a leader. Hard work and dedication are rare these days. He has passion coupled with a strong work ethic: a char acter trait that most great players have. As far as emulating his father on the basketball court, Courtney said: “I just recently got a chance to watch my dad play in a real game. I had always heard about him. One of the things that he does that I would like to do is to be a complete player and cover both ends of the floor.”Having a strong work ethic doesn’t have to be generic; it may also be ge netic. Want to argue that fact with the “souls” of Spring Way that are alive and deceased: Jack Jack son, Calvin Houston, and Mark Halsel, all members of Schenley High School championship teams. The following two players, Ste phen Hill and Reggie Wal lace, were neighborhood standouts in their own right. If so, they are “locked and loaded,” ready to chal lenge you to a “spirited de bate.” They may no longer be able to challenge you on the basketball court, but if you encounter them in the hallowed and historical halls of Arsenal Park and Arsenal Gym, they will surely give you a run for your money. Having a work ethic was not an exception, it was a steadfast rule. As an African American griot, it is my responsibil ity to keep the generations of basketball legends alive and well in the conscious ness of the present and the future. It is my hope and prayer that one day, my grandson or granddaugh ter will be recording the athletic exploits of the son or daughter of Courtney Wallace Jr. However, I am also charged to propel the legends of the present into the future annals of glory because if we don’t narrate our own story, who is going to narrate it, and narrate it correctly?

:10—Truth be told you’ve been waiting... I dare say hoping, Steelers Quar terback Mitch Trubisky screws up. Yes you have... Oh please, stop it, yes you have. You don’t want to say it out loud because your chances of getting in the pearly gates are already hanging by a thread. You either want him to screw up or get a little hurt. Not a lot hurt, just a little hurt in case we need him again. Didn’t happen, huh? That’s the proverbial between a rock and a hard place which is firmly in place now. :09—Truth be further told, I am not sure the Steeler coaching staff isn’t there... I mean between the rock and the hard place. #1 - They brought Trubisky in to be the bridge between Big Ben and Kenny Pick ett, so they really have to honor their word given that he hasn’t screwed up or got hurt. #2 - They, we, you, me, us ... Didn’t count on Pickett being this good this fast. #3 - They can’t, or should I say, they shouldn’t leave Mason Rudolph just hanging in the wind. They should, could, ought to do right by him and trade him so he can have a chance to play somewhere else be cause as soon as Pickett is ready there is no choice... I am just saying. :08—First team, sec ond team or third team, it doesn’t seem to matter much. What the heck is the problem with the D-Line stopping the run? C’mon man! :07—All that being said, a win is a win is a win and your Pittsburgh Steelers were 3-0 in the preseason and trust me, that counts and it matters. As I’ve said to you several times before, the Emperor Chuck Noll was very matter of fact about preseason games, and I quote—“If they weren’t important they wouldn’t play them.” :06—Speaking of playing games... Hey Pittsburgh Pirates, would you please just stop, just stop! ‘nuff said. :05—BTW, you need to know what’s up, so here’s what’s up. “The Boys are back in town” aka—yours truly and my on-air part ner Kevin Cameron are back on-air, so you will always know what’s up, when, where and why in the world of sports. The woman can’t play forever and as you know, time waits for no man or woman and at last count, Father Time is still undefeated! And of course we all want her to get #24 and dare I say #25... But it ain’t gonna happen. How ever she and Venus just might have one final run and pull out a doubles victory at the U.S. Open. A few nights ago on Mon day, Aug. 29, she defeated her first-round opponent in front of a sold-out Arthur Ashe Stadium and the crowd went crazy! There was basically a tribute to Williams after the match. She currently has 23 grand slam singles titles. :03—So you want to know why you see me pa rading around times in my Terry Bradshaw throw back game shirt? ‘Cause I’ll take him 24/7, 365 over everybody else when it’s sure ‘nuff showtime and that includes Brady, Montana and Manning. I am not talking about the Bradshaw you see on TV commercials, I am talking about T.B. that called his own plays, won 4 rings and back-to-back Super Bowl MVPs. Yeah, I said it and you know where to find me ... NPR reported, similarly, that employees around the nation would also okay lower wages just to work remotely.

When President Joe Biden was cam paigning to become president of the United States, he promised to forgive up to $10,000 in student loan debt. When he became president, it appeared that he was playing politics. When asked about student loan forgiveness, he said he wasn’t sure if he had legal authority to doWhatso. he did instead was extend the payment pause on federal student loan payments. Student loan payment pauses were originally put in place by President Donald Trump in March 2020. The freeze had since been extended six times. Fed eral student loan pauses halted collec tion efforts on student loans, reduced the interest rate to 0 percent, and deferred required payments on federal student loans. Millions of people have not been required to make payments on their student loans for over two years and counting. With nearly 45 million people burdened with student loan debt totaling approximately $1.7 trillion, that’s bil lions of dollars of foregone interest accru al projected for the federal budget. As federal student loans were being put on pause, I saw several articles circulat ing creating a narrative that those stu dent loan payment deferrals were in fact debt cancellation. While the narrative was shifting to tout payment deferrals as debt cancellation, the Biden Administra tion approved the cancellation of $32 bil lion in student loan debt, including $13 billion for borrowers who were taken ad vantage of by the institutions they attend ed and $9 billion in total for people with permanent disabilities. Also inclusive in this was $10 billion in student loan debt cancellation awarded to people under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. This program was un der intense scrutiny because at one time only 1 percent of those eligible for Public Loan Forgiveness had their student loans forgiven. The Biden Administration gave attention to this pro gram. Qualification requirements were relaxed. As a result, more people started seeing their loans forgiven. As I observed all of this happening, I ascertained that President Joe Biden would play politics and use the afore mentioned debt cancellation efforts that I just detailed as him making good on his promise to cancel a portion of feder al student loan debt. Frankly speaking, I’m surprised that President Biden has indeed done what he said he would do on his campaign trails, cancel anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000 of federal stu dent loan debt for those who are eligible. While I’m shocked by the President’s move, others are either elated or per turbed by his announcement. I wanted to see what others thought on this subject. I decided to pose this question to my Face book group, “What are your thoughts on student loan forgiveness?”This question sparked nessdentBiden’smaryhere’ssationsomemyconversationinterestingwithingroup.I’llshareoftheconverbelow.First,aquicksumofPresidentproposedStuLoanForgivemission: The Biden Admin istration Student Loan Debt Plan: Single people earning less than $125,000 and married people earning less than $250,000 who currently owe federal student loans are eligible to re ceive $10,000 in student loan forgive ness. S&P SlowsHomeCase-Shiller:PriceGrowthinMay

Home prices rose at a slower pace in May according to the S&P Case-Shiller National Home Price Index. Yearover-year home prices rose by 19.70 percent in May as compared to April’s year-over-year reading of 20.60 percent in home price apprecia tion. Tampa, Florida led S&P Case-Shiller’s 20City Home Price Index with 36.10 percent yearover-year home price growth. Miami, Florida followed with 34.000 per cent home price apprecia tion. Dallas, Texas report ed a 30.60 percent growth rate in home prices. The Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees Fannie Mae and Fred die Mac, reported 1.40 percent growth in home prices month-to-month and 18.30 percent growth year-over-year for May. FHFA data covers pur chase-only transactions associated with home loans owned or backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Analysts said that slower growth in home prices signaled a cooling market after years of rap idly rising home prices. The Commerce Depart ment reported the low est number of new home sales since the pandemic. New homes sold at a sea sonally-adjusted annu al pace of 590,000 sales in June as compared to May’s reading of 642,000 sales. Rising mortgage rates and high home pric es eroded affordability for first-time and moder ate-income homebuyers.

by Sherri Kolade For New Pittsburgh Courier (Michigan Chronicle)— Would you take a pay cut or decline a raise just to stay working remote?    Many Americans would according to a Yahoo Fi nance survey that shows this new trend is seeming ly on the rise.   A survey on remote work, conducted by Owl Labs and Global Workplace An alytics, revealed that one in four Americans are still working remote or hybrid and almost 50 percent of these employees wouldn’t mind taking up to a five percent pay cut to keep go ing as Roughlyis.   25 percent of those employees surveyed would also consider leav ing their jobs if they’re unable to continue work ing remotely, USA TODAY shared.  “Thedata is very clear from this perspective that worker flexibility is here to stay and companies need to start thinking with a remote-first mentality,” said Frank Weishaupt, Owl Labs CEO, in the USA TODAY article. “Going for ward, it will almost always be the case that at least one person will be in your meeting on a screen.”   “It’s the technology that’s saved us during the pandemic,” Kate Lister, president of Global Work place Analytics, said in the article. “We now see that workers can be just as productive in a hybrid environment compared to the perception that they wouldn’t be in an office.”    Lister added that on line-only meetings have allowed for some breath ing room for introverts and minorities who might have been more reluctant to speak up during in-per son gatherings, too, an other factor that could be pushing the remote work option.  “It’sjust clear that when we think about work, there’s no going back to the way things were,” Lister added in the article.   NPR reported, similar ly, that employees around the nation would also okay lower wages just to work remotely.  Over athird of American workers who can continue working from home and who accounted for many of the 25,000 Americans polled, would opt to take a pay cut if they could work from home at least once a week, according to the arti cle, which adds that work ing from home has im pacted inflation and other economic factors where a portion of America is buy ing less as they continue to stay home more.    “We conclude that the recent rise of remote work materially lessens wagegrowth pressures,” econo mists Jose Maria Barrero, Nicholas Bloom, Stephen J. Davis, Brent H. Meyer and Emil Mihaylov said in the article. “In doing so, the rise of remote work eases the challenge confronting monetary policymakers in their efforts to bring the inflation rate down to acceptable levels without stalling economic growth.”   Alicia Howell, founder and feminine leadership coach at Detroit-based Courageous Coaching LLC, told the Michigan Chroni cle that as her own boss she is empathetic toward employees who she feels should do what works for them.  “Ithink when it comes to making that decision it all boils down to who you are as a person and what works best for you,” she said. “I don’t make de cisions based on money alone but … based on my wellbeing. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, the average U.S. corporation’s after-tax profit margin is around 16 percent. In traditional recessions, the rate drops down to single digits. Mine are already paid off! ~Alicia Been paying since 1991 and interest is still keeping it going. Some of my friends died and still owed. ~ Stephanie I think this is a horrible decision. It will add to inflation, and it doesn’t address un derlying issues of rising college costs, lack of financial literacy in most of our population, too many borrowers not graduating with a useful degree (or any degree), too many bor rowers using school loans for cars and spring break trips, and government being in loan guarantee business to begin with. I owed $14k when I finished all of my schooling in ‘93. I paid it off by ‘98 because I understood that I needed to make extra payments to at tack the principal. I was only making $17k. I didn’t take deferment when in grad school because I understood compounding interest. I then started putting my monthly payments into college funds. Both of my sons will grad uate debt free. We will help with grad school as much as possible. The average loan to day is $37k, the average starting salary is $42k, so debt to income has not drastically increased. This is merely transferring debt. ~ Tracy I hope they forgive my loan! The school I went to is not even in existence anymore. ~ Jason Y. They need to forgive at least 50k and fix the system. They pushed people to go to col lege telling them it’s the only way to make it. We were scammed. We shouldn’t have to start out life 80k-100k in debt. I should only need to take my core classes. When you’re 18 you don’t know any better. They will give you student loans and credit cards at 18 but won’t give you a house loan. The system was meant to keep you in debt to this country. They need to do the right thing. ~ Jason C Only forgive those that finished school. ~ Eric Give everyone a tax break or credit of some kind. People know what they’re signing up for with student loans. ~ Janeen So, mine are paid off. It took me a long time. BUT...I knew what I was signing up for, and how much they would be, and still did it. Was it outrageously priced, yes, absolutely. How ever, I was responsible enough to know that it was a debt that I WILLINGLY incurred... no one forced me to. The amount of people these days that refuse to take responsibility for their actions and want someone (every one) else to excuse them is ridiculous. ~Sarah They owe my ancestors. I’ll take that and more! ~ Lea The real problem is the skyrocketing tu ition costs and this doesn’t solve that. If anything, it gives incentive to go ahead and enroll in those overpriced schools, because there is loan forgiveness. College prices will drop if people refuse to pay that much. It does suck, because it limits options. We just looked for my son. Some of my son’s favorite college options were priced through the roof. We had a decent sized 529 and it was a drop on the bucket. He found an affordable op tion with scholarships in the end, but many expensive schools wouldn’t budge on their price. It’s also unfair to those who paid for trade schools. ~Angela (Are you looking to Beat Debt, Boost Your Savings, or Make Good Financial Decisions? Contact me. “Given that Americans are struggling to pay their medical bills, inflation is rising quickly at a pace of 9 percent, and gas and food prices are at all-time highs, this subject is one of the most popular and alarming ones for all Americans,” said Rinor Zejna, a digital public relations specialist.

“The United States currently has certain interim policies and tools, such as automat ic stabilizers like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Unemployment Insurance that are automatically triggered to inject funds into the economy and don’t require any gov ernment action to take hold in the event of a downturn,” said Mila Garcia, a finance ex pert, and the founder of iPaydayLoans. “And while such programs have proven ef fective, they should have an even stronger effect with congressional action being taken alongside them. So, if a downturn does hit, we can at least expect to be less vulnerable to economic troubles than before,” Garcia stated.Amid rising inflation and concerns of a looming recession, many have shared their fears and what America should learn from the pandemic-induced economic downturn.

Zejna offered some findings from research regarding bankruptcy in the United States, noting that one in three Americans strug gle to pay medical bills and 750,000 file for bankruptcy each year. “Medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcies,” Zejna offered. “And 58 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.” Home sales and building have dropped sub stantially over the past year, and consumer confidence has fallen to its lowest point since the pandemic’s beginning. Still, President Joe Biden remains optimis tic.“Coming off last year’s historic economic growth and regaining all the private sector jobs lost during the pandemic, it’s no surprise that the economy is slowing down as the Fed eral Reserve acts to bring down inflation,” Biden said in a statement. “But even as we face historic global chal lenges, we are on the right path, and we will come through this transition stronger and more secure,” the President continued. He insisted that the job market remains historically strong, with unemployment at 3.6 percent and more than 1 million jobs cre ated alone in the second quarter. “My economic plan is focused on bringing inflation down without giving up all the eco nomic gains we have made,” Biden asserted. “Congress has a historic chance to do that by passing the CHIPS and Science Act and Inflation Reduction Act without delay.” Still, corporations have experienced a de cline in sales and earnings during recessions and continue to fear what may come. The initial encounter occurred when two Atlanta police officers responded to a complaint from a Wendy’s employee that someone had fallen asleep behind the wheel of his automobile in the drivethrough lane of the restaurant.  As expected, two officers began an on-scene investigation and an extensive conver sation with Mr. Brooks. For approximately 41 minutes of questioning, the encounter was civil and Mr. Brooks complied with the officers’ requests.  It was only after he failed a breathalyzer test and was threatened with arrest for drunk driv ing that the encounter became hos tile.  A struggle ensued and Mr. Brooks wrestled a taser away from one of the officers and began to flee.  In response, the other officer shot Brooks in the back —twice.OnAugust 23, 2022, Peter Skanda lakis, the special prosecutor assigned to the case, released the results of his investigation.  He announced that the shooting was justified! “In this case, you must remember that here we have a peaceful encounter, that all of a sudden becomes a violent encounter,” Skandalakis said. “When Brooks takes the Taser, he now becomes basically a person with an offensive position.  He can incapacitate the officers.”  He added that race was not believed to be a factor.  The leader of the local chapter of the NAACP criticized the ruling, saying: “Race is absolutely a part of it.” I believe that every police officer deserves to return home from duty without being injured.  I believe that every officer is sworn to the oath of upholding the law.  I accept that the duties of the police often involve life-al tering, instantaneous decisions.  With those facts given, I must agree with the assessment that race was absolutely a part of the outcome.  In this case, I believe that race AND ego were integral to the Evenoutcome.withthe vagaries of watching video recordings, it was obvious that Mr. Brooks physically bested and over powered two police officers.  What was equally obvious was that his primary interest was to escape and not to inflict injury upon either of the officers.  His willingness to engage in a “peaceful encounter” offers proof. I see a Black man who, because of his blackness, preemptively presents the threat of violence and lethality to the psyche of the police.  I see police officers professionally and physically embar rassed by their beatdown.  The result is self-evident.Couldthis have been different?  Ab solutely, with intuitive policing, yes!  The police knew his name. They knew where he lived.  His vehicle was under police control.  His apprehension could have been made under “cooler” circumstances.  The “easier” choice was made—PULL THE TRIGGER!  (Dr. E. Student Debt Relief Plan a welcome first step

Civil rights are personal rights that are guar anteed and protected by the U.S. Constitution and federal laws enacted by Congress, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Civil liberties are basic rights and freedoms that are guaranteed by the Bill of Rights in the Constitution or by interpretations of those rights by the legislature or courts. Civil liberties in the U.S. include all of the following rights: free speech; free exercise of religion; freedom to assemble; privacy; right to remain silent; right to be free from unreason able searches and seizures; right to a fair trial; right to marry; right to vote; right to a speedy trial by an impartial jury; the right to confront witnesses; the right to an attorney; and the right to be free of cruel and unusual punish ment.President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, with legislation initiated by President John F. Kennedy before his assas sination, into law on July 2 of that year. When President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law on August 6, 1965, he took the Civil Rights Act of 1964 several steps further. The new law banned all voter literacy tests and provided federal examiners in certain vot ingThejurisdictions.foregoing represents a snapshot of the foundation of rights in the United States. Since the enactment of the laws granting these rights, there has been an attempt to take some away, especially those that relate to African Ameri cans. There have been attempts to roll some of them back; to turn back the clock. One of the most challenging of these is the current attempts by right wing Republicans to create serious voter suppression strategies aimed at African Americans. The GOP has en acted a number of serious impediments, and if they are successful in turning Congress red in the upcoming elections, the fate regarding vot er suppression might be sealed. Black people may be effectively thwarted in their power to utilize the voting process. Reasonable people might understand that the democratic process, demonstrated by the right of all citizens to participate in the voting process, is a logical strategy to ensure diver sity.Amonolithic society is not only boring, but is self-serving for a small segment of the popula tion. This results in a society that is guaranteed to push people to the margins, which is not smart because those people tend to become disgruntled due to their disenfranchisement, and create problems for the rest of society.

Essentially, the United States is being man handled by some of these immature miscre ants who greedily seek to control all of the country’s resources without an equitable dis tribution of them. This is causing extreme im balance in our country and in the rest of the world. Experienced people know that imbal ance can lead to collapse. In quest of a solution to this dilemma, Black people and others must fight like heck to en sure the viability of civil rights, while calling out and defeating those who embrace a phi losophy of civil wrongs, depriving people of theirThisrights.willbe a ballot box battle, and our fu ture depends upon what happens as a result.

The powers-that-be who want to ensure the existence of this disenfranchised group are significantly short-sighted. It’s tantamount to a social cancer. The disease known as cancer attacks the cells of a body and by so doing, destroys cells adjacent to diseased cells un til there are no more living cells to attack. At this point, the whole body dies. In other words, cancer is suicidal because it always results in its own demise. With this said, people in a society who es pouse authoritarian values and seek to limit diversity and inclusion are like a social can cer. They do not realize that by limiting others, they are in fact limiting themselves. They are setting the stage for their own demise. Committing “civil wrongs” like those of vot er suppression, refusing to address climate change and blocking a significant segment of the population from exercising their rights, is counterproductive and will ultimately result in the devolvement of society.

President Biden’s plan also extends the moratorium on federal loan re payment until the end of the year and takes other long-term steps to amelio rate the college debt crisis for all. Student debt stands in the way of entrepreneurship, homeownership, and even the day-to-day purchase of neces sities. But it’s not just bad news for the borrowers. It’s bad news for all Ameri cans. A surprising one out of every five recipients of food stamps (SNAP) holds a postsecondary degree. An even higher percentage of Medicare enrollees— nearly one in four—hold postsecondary degrees.Whileonly a first step, the President’s actions will put borrowers one step clos er to the financial freedom needed to purchase a home, save for retirement, and build wealth for themselves and their families. But we can do better. Canceling $50,000 in student debt for households with income below $100,000 would increase Black borrowers’ wealth to from 5 percent of White borrowers wealth to 33 percent, while increasing forgiveness to $75,000 in forgiveness would raise it to 42 percent. Congress must work on a long-term strategy for student loan debt relief for existing borrowers and reducing the cost of college for current and future students.TheNational Urban League stands ready to work with Congress and the White House to make college more accessible and affordable for all.

Earthquake would say no to Liz Cheney

What’s up with Liz Cheney and her one-woman crusade to save democra cy? Is she really speaking to us in the BIPOC community? I got some guidance from a legendary BlackEarthquakecomedian.isnot a California peril, but the name of one of Dave Chappelle’s favorite comic mentors. Earthquake or Mr. Quake, as the New York Times might call him on second reference, gets political in his current Netflix special. “You can’t say no, you can’t tell a Trump supporter nothing about Trump; they love Trump,” says Earth quake in the appropriate key of urban Southeast DC. “People ask me all the time, ‘Quake, what kind of woman are you looking for in your life, and I say, (n word expletive) I’m looking for a woman like a Trump supporter. No matter what she hears about me that woman don’t believe in nothing. She say, ‘You got another woman, you say ‘Baby, that’s fake news.’” Of course, Earthquake says it with more flair in a live setting where the crowd howls, but you get the point. We all know how belief in Trump is cultlike, and a threat to our democracy. Which brings us back to Liz Cheney. She’s like a new Uncle Sam pointing her finger at us. But not like a “Karen” wagging her finger saying she wants to speak to the manager. She wants to make sure Trump is never the manag er of us again. It’s just if she’s serious, she’ll need a lot more BIPOC support than anyone thinks.Cheney lost big recently in Wyoming when her own Republican Party acted as if under a spell cast on them by a man known in Florida search war rants as FPOTUS. That, of course, stands for the defeat ed “Former President of the United States.”Buthow can we assure he stays de feated? Perhaps if we answer Cheney’s call.In the Wyoming primary, Cheney lost to her opponent by 37 points, 66 per cent to 29 percent. That’s some rebuke for someone from a legacy Republican family. It was a public betrayal. But you have to admire Cheney’s willingness to pay the price—the loss of her job, her seat in Congress. And all because of an un-principled belief in the Constitution and her unwill ingness to join in the zombie chorus of Republican election deniers who stand by their FPOTUS. So I’m open to Cheney when she pitched herself to America during her concession speech. There’s at least one thing we agree on. The defeated FPOTUS must stay out of government. As a single issue that may be enough to join her Ameri can pro-democracy movement. “Freedom must not, cannot, and will not die here,” Cheney said in Wyoming. “This is a fight for all of us together,” she said. “I’m a conservative Republi can.” Then came the pitch. “But I love my country more,” she said. “So I ask you tonight to join me. As we leave here, let us resolve that we will stand together, Republicans, Democrats, and independents, against those who would destroy our Republic.”

TriceEdneyWire.com—The past few weeks have been anything except uneventful.  The passage of new life-al tering progressive laws, expected and unexpected results in primary elections, the service of a subpoena on Mar-A-La go, and a variety of other events have captured the attention of the na tion.  Because of a vested interest in the lives of Black people, my own attention was drawn to the results of the investi gation of the death of Rayshard Brooks. Rayshard Brooks was the 27-year-old Black man shot and killed in an Atlanta Wendy’s parking lot after an altercation with police in June 2020, two weeks after the murder of George Floyd.  I was more pained about the results of the investigation than I was sur prised.   Like me, critical observers have come to expect decisions favoring police in cases involving Black men, and, increasingly, Black women.  Despite as sertions by law enforcement executives that there is a reformation in policing, evidence suggests that the reformation is principally administrative and has little consequence on the street.

In the 1970s, the maximum federal Pell Grant covered nearly 80 percent of the cost of a four-year public college degree. Today, it covers only a third. In the 1970s, a student could earn an entire year’s tuition at a public uni versity by working just five hours a week at a minimum wage job. Today, a student would have to work 28 hours a week. From 1978 to 2012, college tuition rose four times faster than inflation and has risen three times faster in the last decade.Since1970, the average student loan debt at graduation has increased 317 percent when adjusted for inflation. In other words, this is not your grand father’s student debt. This week President Biden offered much-needed relief to millions of fed eral student loan borrowers. With the stroke of a pen, he is forgiving $10,000 in federal student loan debt for those making under $125,000 a year. One in four Black borrowers would see their debt cleared entirely under the Presi dent’s plan. Pell grant recipients, who are twice as likely to be Black, are eligi ble for an additional $10,000 in relief. The extra relief for Pell grants re cipients is responsive to the National Urban League’s call for an approach that recognizes these borrowers often owe more and for longer periods. According to a Brookings Institution report, Black college graduates owe an average $7,400 more than their white peers upon graduation. Four years after graduation, they owe an average $52,726, compared with $28,006 for the average White college graduate, according to the report, which included nonborrowers in the average.  About two-thirds of Black borrowers owe more than they originally borrowed 12 years after starting college.

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—“By forgiving up to $20,000 in burdensome student loan debt, President Biden is giving working and middle class families the financial breathing room the desper ately need. Buying a home, founding a business, starting a family, and so much more will now be a financial possibility for millions more Americans. But we cannot stop there. The Congressional Black Caucus remains committed to achieving additional reforms to ensure current, and future borrowers are not subjected to this cycle of burdensome debt.” – Congressional Black Caucus Chair Rep. Joyce Beatty

BIPOC members who have an inde pendent, even a slightly conservative streak, may find her message attrac tive. But I’m not so sure. Cheney didn’t vote for the Inflation Reduction Act which includes more than $750 billion for climate change, Obamacare extensions, prescription cost limits in Medicare, plus a 15 percent automatic tax on wealthy corporations. During the FPOTUS administration, Cheney’s votes favored rich, White, and corporate special interests 100 percent of the time. She voted against restoring the Voting Rights Act, LGBTQ issues, and all but the most obvious civil rights issues. For example, she voted for the Juneteenth holiday. Was it because rich Whites got the day off too? Newsweek reported Cheney voted with Trump 93 percent of the time. That puts her at 7 percent soul. Not enough to get me to switch parties and vote Republican to help Cheney defeat Trump in 2024. Better idea: just make sure you vote and support the party that got us this far. That would be quite enough to beat Trump. It was the last time. As for Cheney? Support in spirit, but she’s not for us. And I think Mr. Quake would concur. experience. That means lessons that include and celebrate diverse commu nities. It means history that doesn’t erase the experiences of Black people, brown people, LGBTQ people, women, immigrants, people with disabilities, and other communities that have been historically marginalized. The director of the nonprofit EveryLibrary warns that the current wave of book bans amounts to “the silencing of stories and the suppressing of information” that will make “the next generation less able to function in society.” Children learn better when they can see themselves in others and see their communities as part of the great Ameri can story. At the same time, science tells us that learning how to understand and empathize with people across differenc es is essential to children’s healthy de velopment. Looking honestly at our past helps students develop critical thinking skills that are desperately needed when every smart phone is a gateway to disin formation.Democracy, too, depends on informed citizens to function. It’s no coincidence that the crowd that stormed the Capitol in 2021, was acting on lies and misinfor mation.Authoritarianism feasts on ignorance. Election deniers and censors of history are in the same camp, and should get nowhere near our schools. We cannot begin to heal our divisions until we acknowledge and teach our whole history—good and bad. And we know that standing up for the freedom to learn will be a challenging task. This school year follows one in which reports of book bans and censorship reached record levels according to the American Library Association. Far-right groups and politicians are offering rewards and setting up tip lines to “report” teachers who cover “divisive” topics. School board members are receiving death threats. But we don’t shy away from these challenges when we act from a place of love. Loving our children means be ing advocates for them when political extremists want to limit what they can learn. It means showing up to school board meetings and organizing to make ourselves heard. It means running for the school board. It means rejecting one of the censors’ most harmful assumptions: that stu dents are too fragile to hear the history our people have lived. Millions of families are getting ready to send their kids back to school. Let’s also get ready to defend the freedom to learn. Before the dictionary ends up on your district’s banned-books list. Back to school, back to fighting far-right attacks on education

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—Just when you thought far-right attacks on public education couldn’t get any more absurd, we hear about something new. For the first time in almost 15 years, Sarasota schools this fall are turning down hundreds of free dictionaries from the local Rotary Club. Why? Because the district is afraid of violating a radical new law that’s part of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s crackdown on in clusive curricula. The district can’t buy or accept any new books until it hires someone to make sure they comply with the state’s draconian censorship regulations. So, the dictionaries sit on theTheshelf.idea that dictionaries might be hazardous to kids would be laughable if it weren’t so dangerous. This new school year is starting as more states are pass ing laws to make it easier to ban books. States are also passing laws to stop teachers from talking about topics like racism; according to Education Week, 42 states have now enacted limits on what teachers can say about racism or sexism in the Theseclassroom. samepolitical forces want to make schools teach a whitewashed version of our history and our current reality in the name of “patriotic” educa tion. They’re trying to take over school boards to impose their political ideology on teachers and students. That’s bad for our kids. And it’s bad for our country. The freedom to learn is at risk. This fall, it’s more important than ever to stand for the rights of teachers to teach, and students to learn, about the full spectrum of the American

We all have heard the popular expression, “give credit where credit is due.” After hearing numer ous critics over the past 18 months, it is refresh ing to see President Joe Biden finally getting the credit he deserves for what is one of the most productive starts to a presidential term in recent history.TheFinancial Times’ Associate Editor Ed Luce recently wrote an opinion piece entitled, “The unexpected triumph of Joe Biden: Recent legis lative successes suggest a good political system in good working order, but complacency is mis placed.”Mr.Luce made the case for why President Biden’s star is rising, but warned that despite his impressive legislative record, voters may not give him the credit he deserves because too many people respond more to style than sub stance. I agree with Mr. Luce’s assessment. Our media-driven culture seems to rate words and deeds that generate headlines over those that make headway. Joe Biden, and those of us who support him, prefer putting people over politics. When President Biden took office, the country was in the grip of a global pandemic. Businesses were shuttering, schools were closing, and peo ple were dying. The country needed leadership. Unfortunately, we had a showman at the helm when a statesman was needed. Forty-five was pre-occupied with scoring political points and securing media hits. And when voters were giv en a chance to express themselves, by a margin of nearly seven million votes, they chose states manship over showmanship. Joe Biden was sworn in on January 20, 2021. On that day, the country’s unemployment rate was 6.4 percent. COVID-19 was infecting 193,030 Americans a day and people were dying at a rate of 3,167 a day. From day one, Biden fo cused on shoring up the shaky foundation left by the previous Administration. On March 11, 2021, less than two months after he took office, President Biden signed the Amer ican Rescue Plan (ARP) into law. It accelerat ed the American economic recovery by putting money in people’s pockets, getting children back in school and lifting nearly half of them out of poverty.TheARP also prevented evictions and fore closures for millions of America’s families, kept hundreds of large businesses open and reopened thousands of small businesses. It helped stem the deadly rampage of COVID-19 by expand ing testing and access to vaccines. Republicans put their politics over people’s needs and voted unanimously against this legislation. Democrats put people over politics and started building a foundation for the country’s recovery. The second corner of Biden’s foundation came on November 15, 2021, when he signed into law the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This legislation made historic investments in our crumbling and outdated infrastructure. It invested in high-speed internet, clean drinking water, a resilient electric grid, replacing lead pipes, making a down payment on clean energy transmission, and charging stations for electric vehicles. These infrastructure investments are creating jobs and strengthening critical links in our supply chain. During all of this, President Biden nominated the first Black woman to the United States Su preme Court, a Black woman to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, and 26 other Black women to various federal courts, more than the combined total of all previous Presidents.

President Biden deserves credit, not complacency

President Biden continued working, away from public view, to help get the final two corners of his foundation solidified, and on August 9, he signed the CHIPS and Science Act into law. This third corner of his platform restores America’s standing as a global science and technology lead er by providing the resources and tools needed to make more products like semiconductor chips here at home. It will create good-paying jobs, in vest in building a more diverse workforce, and bolster our supply chains.

He refused to give up on America living out the true meaning of its creed. The self-evident truth that all men are created equal remains a courageous standard today. In a speech about Vietnam, he dis pelled any confusion about his motives and his love for America. He described his disappointment in America but asserted that “there can be no great disappointment where there is no greatOverlove.”these past months, I have felt disappointment in America. But like my uncle, my disappointment pales in comparison to my faith in Americans to do what is right. My hope for Amer ica’s bright future is fortified because I join Dr. King as he believed America is a nation bent towards justice. For all the areas of sorrow that might bring us despair, there are far more reasons that bring hope. I was 17 years old when my uncle died, and as a guardian of the King family legacy, I remember him well and still have faith in his American Dream. As one blood, one united race, with eyes wide open and not colorblind, we, the people of America, must press on to realize the “possible dream” together, from the womb to the tomb into eternity.

The fourth and final corner of the Biden plat form, the Inflation Reduction Act, passed the Congress with every Democrat voting for it, and every Republican voting against it. Under this new law, signed by President Biden on Au gust 16, Medicare recipients will see their outof-pocket prescription drugs capped at $2,000 annually and their cost of insulin capped at $35 monthly. It reduces the cost of health care for 13 million Americans by extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies for more than three years with an average savings of $800 per year. The new law includes provisions to increase taxes on corporations, address climate change, and de crease the prices of prescription drugs. The IRA will help cut climate pollution by 40 percent by 2030, while building a new, clean energy economy and creating nine million new jobs. It invests in environmental justice by cleaning up legacy pollution most often found in communities of color and provides tax credits to ensure nuclear energy producers can continue to provide clean energy for consumers. The IRA will require corporations to pay a minimum tax of 15 percent and reduce the deficit by $300 bil lion over the next decade. As Mr. Luce warns us, “complacency is mis placed.” Voters should see this “good political system in good working order” as motivation to go to the polls to support more positive progress. President Biden is finally getting some of the credit he is due. And, he and my fellow Demo crats will continue putting the American people over partisan politics. Doss ItCheckOut

Ben Jealous Commentary

Recently, Salman Rushdie, a 75-yearold novelist, was a guest speaker at the Chautauqua Institution. He was slated to discuss how the United States was a safe haven for exiled writers.  Rushdie is an expert on the subject.  In 1988 Rushdie published The Sa tanic Verses. The novel mentions when the prophet of Islam mistook words from Satan for divine revelation. Rush die fictionalized a controversy that al ready existed in early Islamic history, but the novel offended Muslims worldwide. Public book burnings were held, and bookstores were firebombed. Then the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, ordered Rushdie’s death for blasphemy. Rushdiewent into hiding, but Rush die’s Japanese translator was stabbed to death in 1991, Rushdie’s Italian translator was stabbed multiple times that same year but survived, and in 1993 Rushdie’s Norwegian publisher was injured in a shooting.  But that’s the past, Rushdie’s been out of hiding for years.  Unfortunately, right before Rushdie addressed Chautauqua’s audience, a man rushed the stage and stabbed Rushdie several times.  Rushdie survived the attack. The assailant was Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old born in the United States. Matar’s Lebanese mother told an interviewer that in 2018 her son spent a month in the Middle East with his fa ther but returned “radicalized”. Matar told the authorities he didn’t like Rush die because the author attacked Islam, but admitted he only read two pages of The Satanic Verses. The authorities discovered Matar’s social media ac count revealed he’s sympathetic to Shia extremism.Thereyou have it. Matar was an Islamic extremist and attacked the author for an old offense. Or was there another element of extremism that aided and abetted Matar’s new-found radicalism?Fouryears ago, a BBC journalist in terviewed Alyas Karmani, a Pakistani Muslim raised in London and a univer sity student in 1989. Karmani indicat ed that The Satanic Verses altered how he identified with Islam.  Before the book was published, he adopted “western culture”, and all his friends were “White liberal mainstream types”. After Ayatollah Khomeini ordered Rushdie’s death, Karmani’s friends turned on him. He thought they accepted him, but they kept asking him “What’s wrong with you people?” and “Why are you doing this?” Even though Karmani adopted “western culture”, he was still lumped with the fundamentalist, his so-called enlightened friends didn’t make a dis tinction and viewed everyone who had brown skin with a Muslim background as less Karmanicivilized. called himself one of “Rush die’s children” that was radicalized by White liberals who pushed him back into Islam, but “Rushdie’s children” didn’t embrace Islam for spirituality, they embraced a global-Muslim identi ty that was radical and hostile toward TheMatarWest. istoo young to be one of “Rush die’s children”, but he is a child of “can cel culture” which can also be extreme and“Cancelhostile. culture” emerged around the mid-point of the previous decade while Matar was still an adolescent. It’s when a selected few publicly demand for a prominent person to face disciplinary action for making statements that “offended” the selected few. It’s important to note that when the selected few claims to be “offended”, it doesn’t mean their feelings are hurt. It means a prominent person made a statement that conflicts with their cherished values, which they have declared are the only values worthy of the public square, and any speaker that doesn’t reflect those cherished values must be silenced.  When conservatives were “canceled” by the selected few “the right” remind ed “the left” of their famous dictum, “We disapprove of what you say, but we will defend your right to say it”, but the left countered with “free speech is not free of Matar’sconsequences.”generationwasn’t instilled with the classical liberal approach to free speech. They were encouraged to be offended by speech that opposes their cherished values and make sure their opponents were punished.  However, “the left” wants us to believe “cancel culture” is simply about ac countability, but “the right” insists all opposition to the cherished values held by the selected few will be considered blasphemy, and the selected few will call for the execution of prominent peo ple’s careers in the same way Khomeini called for Rushdie’s death. If “the right” is correct, then Matar was radicalized before he went to the Middle East, and once again “the left” is guilty of pushing too hard.
