AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN were getting vaccinated against COVID-19 during the Homewood Community Health and Wellness Summit, Aug. 14. Now the push is on to get even more African American men and women in the Pittsburgh area vaccinated, especially those in the younger age groups. (Photos by J.L. Martello)

Chardae Jones, the mayor of Braddock for the past two and a half years, always sees the glass half full. But even she was taken aback when she learned that a group of African American teens who were part of a summer camp in Braddock wanted no part of getting the COVID-19

vaccine. “They don’t want it. They don’t want it,” a frustrated Jones told the New Pittsburgh Courier in an exclusive interview, Aug. 29. “They don’t know what’s in it, they don’t understand it,” were some of the reasons students gave the coordinator of the summer camp, which were then relayed to Jones. “Now I’m at a point where I’m like, maybe I have to figure out

a way to come to them, and find another approach. Instead of talking at them, maybe just sit and talk with them.” The eye has been on the Braddock area lately since the Allegheny County Health Department unveiled vaccine statistics by zip code, and the 15104 zip code, where Braddock is located, had the lowest percentage of residents with at least one dose of

the vaccine, at 42 percent. Jones, though, pointed out that North Braddock and Rankin also are part of the 15104 zip code, so the low vaccination rate is not just a Braddock problem. But overall, African Americans in Allegheny County continue to severely lag behind Whites when it comes to getting the COVID vaccine. Data from SEE COVID VACCINE A2

Wes Moore to speak in Pittsburgh, Sept. 29 Bestselling author, former CEO of anti-poverty force Robin Hood The New Pittsburgh Courier has learned that combat veteran Wes Moore, a two-time New York Times bestselling author, former CEO of Robin Hood, one of the largest anti-poverty forces in the nation and Maryland gubernatorial candidate, will headline a speaker series at Neighborhood Academy, Sept. 29. The event will be held both in-person at the school, 709 N. Aiken Ave., and virtually via Zoom. The in-person event will take place within The Neighborhood Academy’s Hans and Leslie Fleischner Indoor Soccer Field. Guests will be served a boxed dinner, hear Moore’s presentation, and engage in a Q&A. Author’s Circle VIP Guests will have the opportunity to meet Moore in person before the presentation. Virtual attendees will receive admission to Moore’s presentation and may submit questions from 7 to 8 p.m. A Maryland native, Moore’s book, “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates” explores the lives of two Wes Moores

and the factors and choices that led one to a Rhodes scholarship, military service, and a White House fellowship; and the other to drug dealing, prison, and eventual conversion to the Muslim faith. Both share a gritty sense of realism about their pasts. Moore’s latest book, “Five Days,” explores the uprisings in Baltimore in 2015 after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody through a kaleidoscope of perspectives and examines critical questions about the deeper causes of violence and poverty. “It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome Wes Moore to our school for this special bi-annual event. You won’t want to miss this thought-provoking discussion with such an impressive two-time New York Times bestselling author, such as Wes,” said Anthony Williams, head of school at The Neighborhood Academy, in a statement to the Courier. “The Neighborhood AcadSEE MOORE A7
