Our Higher Education courses are no exception and we now offer opportunities to study locally for Foundation Degrees in subjects as diverse as Music Technology, Engineering, Photography, Graphic Design, ICT and Sports Coaching & Physical Education. The Right Choice

Mid Cheshire College is a leading provider of innovative and creative Higher Education provision in Cheshire. Through its valued partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Chester, students have access to a rich, extensive and diverse range of learning and support materials. All our programmes undergo rigorous quality assurance checks throughout the year and are continuously updated to reflect current industry approaches and changes

to technology. In addition, all teaching and support staff have many years of commercial and educational experience, with most still working within the industry – so you can be sure you will be receiving the best learning experience.

The Local Area Mid Cheshire College is located in Hartford, right in the heart of Cheshire, on a pleasant green-field campus. The local town of Northwich is only 2.5 miles away, offering a variety of shops, as well as pubs, restaurants and sports facilities. For more variety, the Northwest offers the stylish, modern and vibrant cities of Manchester

and Liverpool teeming with museums and boasting thriving fashion and live music scenes. Chester, with its contrasting architectural heritage, is within easy travelling distance of Northwich. The local area is rich in places of interest to visit, including Delamere Forest, Blakemere Craft Centre, Marshall’s Arm Nature Reserve, the Anderton Boat Lift, the Peckforton Hills, Tatton Park and many others. If you want to venture even further afield, then North Wales with its historic castles and seaside resorts or the glorious Lake District are within easy reach.


Support for Students

One of the things the Higher Education students say they like best about the College is the fact that it is friendly and caring. The College treats you as an individual, regardless of age, race, disability or gender, and can offer you support when you need it. All students have their own personal tutor, and are entitled to support and advice on careers, grants, welfare, counselling and help in finding accommodation.

Student Services Access to Student Services is available from 8.30am – 5.00pm (4.30pm Fridays) during term-time and is there to provide you with the support you need when studying Higher Education courses. Fees The fee for full-time Foundation Degrees is £1,810 per annum (subject to confirmation), plus a £60 registration fee payable on enrolment. FdA in Supporting Teaching & Learning is £905 per annum (subject to confirmation).

All part-time fees are pro-rata. EU students are regarded as home students and will pay the above fees. A bursary up to £350 is available, depending on household income, for further details contact Student Services.

Financial Support Why spend your entire student loan on accommodation and survival away from home when Mid Cheshire College can offer you a more economical and flexible alternative! If you already live in Cheshire West and Chester or the surrounding area, then you will be aware that there are good road and rail links to the College, making it easy and inexpensive to get here from home. If, on the other hand, you are considering living away from home, you will find that accommodation and living expenses in the area, which is predominantly rural, are much cheaper than the equivalent in a city. Details of local letting agents are available from the Student Services team. If you are studying full-time you should apply to Student Finance England on form PN1 (for 1st year students) or PR1 (for 2nd year students) for financial assistance.

They will decide whether you are eligible for support for a maintenance loan, tuition fee loan or any other grants. Apply online at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance. If you are studying part-time please refer to student finance, at the above web address, for further guidance. Please note that if you are claiming any benefits, receipt of HE funding has an impact on these. You should discuss this with your benefit provider.

Maintenance Loan If you are under 60 and you meet the residency requirements, you may be eligible for a student loan. This is to help with living costs such as accommodation, food, clothes, travel etc. This loan is repayable at a very low interest rate once you are earning over £15,000 per year. Once you have enrolled and started on your course, you need to come to Student Services to activate your loan, which will then be paid into your bank account each term.

Tuition Fee Loan Tuition fees can be covered by a low cost loan, which you will only repay once you have left Higher Education and started earning more than £15,000 a year. Once granted, the Student Loans Company will pay your fees to the College.

Maintenance Grant This is a non-repayable grant of up to £2,906 per year. The amount you receive depends on your household income; those with a household income of less than £25,000 will receive the full grant, with a partial grant available to those with a household income of up to £50,020. Grants are paid into your bank account each term.

Other Grants Various other grants are available such as a Childcare Grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance, Adult Dependants’ Grant and Disabled Students’ Allowance. More details can be obtained from Student Services.

Access to Learning Fund This is available through the College and provides help for students on low income who may need extra financial support for their course to stay in Higher Education. The College will decide whether you are able to get this help and if so, how much you can receive; this will depend on your own circumstances.

Impartial Advice, Information and Guidance The aim of the service is to provide high quality and effective pre-entry information, advice and guidance to all potential students for part-time and full-time courses.

Careers and Educational Guidance

The Student Development Centre

The careers and educational guidance advisers help with your choice of employment and Higher Education opportunities. All students and potential students are entitled to informed, impartial and supportive careers education and guidance, which will enable them to make informed careers decisions that are consistent with their abilities and needs. If you would like an appointment to see a careers and educational guidance adviser or finance adviser before applying for a course, please contact reception.

Additional Learning Support is available through the Centre for students who are in receipt of the Disabled Student Allowance. Well-qualified and enthusiastic tutors are available to provide tutorial support in assignment, essay and dissertation writing, proofreading, time management and organisation. Practical assistance can be arranged for students with physical disabilities and communicators and interpreters are available for students whose first language is BSL.

Learning Difficulties and Disabilities The College welcomes students with learning difficulties and disabilities. Buildings on most sites have ramped access, toilets designed for people with disabilities and floors with non-slip surfaces. The Hartford site is equipped with a lift to the upper floors making it suitable for wheelchair users. There are automatic doors on all entrances and exits, semi-automatic internal doors and a deaf alert fire alarm system. Library Services There are libraries at all three College sites and students are welcome to visit any library regardless of their course or place of study. A wide range of books, CDs, DVDs, journals, magazines, newspapers etc, are available, as well as space and individual computer access for private study. The library catalogue can be searched from the Internet http://library.midchesh.ac.uk. The College also has a virtual learning environment, which can be accessed from any College computer or at home via the Internet. It contains a range of learning materials and access to the intranet with many valuable sites highlighted.

Sport, Recreation & Enrichment Activities College campuses have ‘Rec Zones’ where students can relax. Lunchtime access to the fitness suite is available at both the Hartford and Winsford sites. Students also have access to the University Student Union clubs and facilities of Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Chester.

Student Involvement The College encourages student involvement at all levels. This ranges from commenting on how well your lessons help you learn and your experiences at College, to involvement with the recruitment of staff and being represented on College committees and the Governing Body.

Students have an active Student Union, which all students are automatically members of, and which is affiliated to the National Union of Students. They organise social activities, charity events, clubs and societies, and so on, and have a Student Council which meets once a term and advises College Managers. The National Union of Students also organises national discounts on behalf of students, which can be accessed by buying one of their NUS Extra Cards for £10.

Counselling A confidential counselling service is provided by a qualified counsellor.

How can the employer benefit?

Foundation Degrees are Higher Education qualifications that are designed in collaboration with employers as an alternative to a traditional degree programme.

Employer-driven – designed with employers to meet their needs and to plug regional skills gaps

Subject to demand, courses are available part-time and are often delivered with concise timetables, i.e. one day per week, to allow students to study whilst in full employment. We work with employers to develop Foundation Degrees, tailored specifically to the needs of their organisation and sector. Alternatively, organisations can utilise one of our existing Foundation Degree programmes to meet their needs.

Access to Higher Education If you feel you missed out by not going to university but don’t have the formal qualifications, then the Access to Higher Education course will be perfect for you.

Art & Design BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies

Art and Design student, Maggie Stewart, landed a much coveted place at Goldsmiths University in London, where she is studying a joint Honours Degree in Fine Art and Art History. Goldsmiths is one of the most prestigious universities in the UK for arts and design and has been home to many famous artists such as Damien Hirst. Maggie joined Mid Cheshire College after completing her A levels, and enrolled on the Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design. The pre-degree course allowed her to build up an impressive portfolio of artwork, which helped her gain the university place. She also attributes her success to the help she received from the College’s Ofsted Grade One student development centre. The college team very quickly diagnosed dyslexia for the first time, despite her having had the problem since primary school. There is a written element to all courses and the support tutors guided her in essay writing, spelling, organisation of ideas and dyslexia strategies to enable her to be more independent during her time at university.

BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art & Design

Attendance 1 year – Post A level /Pre-Degree Entry Requirements • 5 GCSEs at grade A* – C or equivalent • You will also need to present a satisfactory portfolio Content This course will give you a broad based experience in art and design, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, 3D design, textile design and graphic design, with supporting studies of art history and life drawing. Through tutorial guidance and practical experience students eventually elect to work in one particular area of study. Learning and Assessment Learning is through tutorials, consultation, and practical studies/workshop lectures and a personal written reflective diary. Formal assessment during the first two terms will allow you to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and assist you to make the appropriate applications to Higher Education. There is a final major project assessed by exhibition.

Prospects Students can progress on to do a Degree, Foundation Degree or HND in a range of specialist studies, such as graphic design, 3D design, fashion/textile design, fine art. A number of students each year are guaranteed places at Manchester Metropolitan or Salford Universities to which the course is affiliated.

This programme is designed for those who wish to further their career opportunities in the field of business and management. This vocational course will allow you to develop your skills within a wide variety of business disciplines. Its project based approach provides opportunities for you and your employer to benefit both immediately and in the long-term from your participation in the programme. You are able to shape the programme to suit your needs and future aspirations. The focus is on knowledge of the practical aspects of business and management, with teaching and assessment focused on your own work role and the workplace. A career in business can mean choosing from a wide range of employment opportunities, from being involved in finance, administration, supply, retail, human resources or marketing, as well as supervisory and management positions and self-employment. A Foundation Degree provides evidence of your ability to think analytically, communicate well, solve problems and successfully complete numerous and varied tasks.

Assessment This programme will be assessed by a combination of methods, e.g. work-based assessment, assignments, case studies, presentations, research, team class debates and examinations.

Prospects Students will have the opportunity to apply to progress on to the second or final year of an Honours Degree in a related area at any university. However, students may also progress directly on to an agreed Level 6 Honours Degree programme at Manchester Metropolitan University studying on a part-time basis, i.e. BA (Hons). You can also progress on to Professional Qualifications e.g. Association of Accounting Technicians, Institute of Marketing, Institute of Personnel Development or Diploma in Management.

Commercial Music Technology Foundation Degree (FdSc)

The programme is for those who would like to develop a professional career in the music industry. During the course you will use the College’s state-of-the-art facilities including sound recording studios and the knowledge of professional staff to develop, realise and market a commercially viable music product. On this programme you will develop core knowledge and skills in recording, sequencing and production to a professional standard. Success in this competitive industry requires more than straightforward technical ability however, and this is why you will learn to evaluate

your work in both artistic and commercial terms. Knowledge of the music industry as it currently exists is also essential if you are to successfully promote yourself and your music, and this forms a key element of the course. The music department is staffed by tutors with a wealth of industry experience and who are also professional musicians and producers. The College has 3 professional recording studios, including a dedicated Foundation Degree Studio, which is equipped with ProTools HD2, “high-end” plug-ins and processing, a Mackie X-buss Digital console and 2 live areas. There are also a number of “project” studios, a teaching

laboratory with 22 workstations, a range of high quality mics and students can book studios out for their own projects. Students have access to all computers, which are Apple Macs running Logic Pro, and we also have a number of ProTools systems. The College has its own in-house record label, Inclusive Records (www.inclusiverecords.com), providing students with an outlet for their work, and an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in organising and promoting a release. This course will equip you with skills relevant to the music industry, live sound, recording, broadcast and creative media industries.

Students who do not meet the above admissions requirements will be considered for entry if they can demonstrate that they have the relevant vocational experience, motivation and personal qualities appropriate for Foundation Degree level work.

Prospects Students will have the opportunity to progress on to the final year of an Honours Degree in a related area or move straight into the music industry. Recent students have progressed on to complete top up years in BA (Hons) Commercial Music Production at Chester University (our established progression route) and BA (Hons) Music Production at Futureworks (UCLAN) in Manchester.

Contemporary Photography Foundation Degree (FdA)

The course philosophy promotes photography as a dynamic contemporary artistic practice that reflects a broad range of applications. Students experience an experimental and creative environment in which to produce their work. A wide spectrum of approaches is encouraged – through various forms of subject matter including documentary, conceptual, portraiture and studio-based work. Students are encouraged to develop their own personal style and are helped by a team dedicated to the highest standards of practice. The underlying principle of the course is that all images are produced with thought as to their context and capacity to communicate to an audience. Students have the opportunity to work in the specialist accommodation at the London Road Studios in Northwich, which provides the highest levels of education and training, tailored to the needs of industry. This course incorporates educational visits to galleries, exhibitions and events and foreign trips, the most recent of which have included Paris, Berlin and New York.

Prospects Since the start of the Foundation Degree in September 2006, the course has flourished, producing its first cohort of students in 2008. Eleven graduates progressed to a third year at Stockport College (Validated by JMU). Two graduates are working nationally and internationally as full-time assistants for major North West photographers. Graduate, Seba Kurtis progressed to London College of Communication on an MA programme. Seba’s work, completed on programme, has been selected to feature at the International Photography Expo in New York during 2009. The department also has a successful programme of visiting practitioners and mentors including internationally known photographers John Davies, Dinu Li and Chris Cokin, as well as D&AD winners Shaw and Shaw. These professionals also contribute to the overall design of the programme modules. Students also have the opportunity to exhibit their work each year at the prestigious Cube Gallery in Manchester City Centre. www.northerneye.org

Engineering with Mechanical and Electrical Pathways Foundation Degree (FdEng)

These degrees contain a common core of engineering, maths and science units, along with more specialist units directly applicable to your chosen route. The course brings together learning in College and the workplace, to deliver the knowledge and skills needed in local engineering employment markets. It provides both the basic theoretical knowledge in science and engineering and the opportunity to apply this knowledge in the work environment.

The College has excellent resource-based learning areas, including a brand new suite of classrooms and laboratories equipped with industry-standard equipment.


Engineering with Mechanical and Electrical pathways UCAS Code 001H (Validated by Manchester Metropolitan University) Attendance 2 years full-time (one day and one evening per week) Entry Guidelines Students need to have 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English, and studied one of the following programmes: • BTEC Extended Diploma or other equivalent qualification • 2 GCE A Levels • Engineering AVCE (1 x 12 units or 2 x 6 units) • 1 GCE A Level plus 1 x 6 units Engineering ACE Where possible an academic or vocational reference will be required to ensure suitability for this level of programme. Students who do not meet the above admissions requirements will be considered for entry if they can demonstrate that they have the relevant vocational experience, motivation and personal qualities appropriate for Foundation Degree level work.

Content As a day release student, you will normally be in an engineering-related job, and will be expected to attend College each week during term for one day/evening session. A significant amount of learning on this course will take place in the workplace using study guides and the experience of colleagues. Every student will have a personal tutor to assist them and further tutor support is available through e-mail and telephone contact. All students, whatever their mode of attendance, will have the opportunity to attend sessions at Manchester Metropolitan University in order to take advantage of the specialist facilities in the Department of Engineering & Technology. The course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to succeed in a wide variety of engineering manufacturing jobs. It provides both the basic theoretical knowledge in science and engineering, and the opportunity to apply this knowledge in the work environment. Fashion Design Foundation Degree (FdA)

The Fashion course has a strong vocational element, whilst maintaining high academic standards, with the emphasis on womenswear and menswear. Competition projects are assimilated into the course and work placements are encouraged. Visits to galleries, museums and shopping research trips are organised, both locally and internationally. Industry visits may take place in support of projects and guest speakers from the local and national fashion industry visit to lecture and lead workshops. Students have final projects presented at a fashion show, providing valuable vocational experience. Students will be prepared for employment in the relevant industry through vocationally specific curricula, development of employment skills, professional development and the use of specialist industry equipment including Gerber, whilst also having the opportunity to progress on to Honours Degree level.

Students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of customer and market level, and present a collection of garments and a professional portfolio to be exhibited at the end of year Degree Show. It is anticipated that a sophisticated and informed approach is made to the work at this level. Sports Coaching & Physical Education Foundation Degree (FdA)

This full-time qualification is designed for people who are, or would like to be involved with coaching, physical education or fitness.The course develops a sound understanding of the major areas of knowledge needed to work in these industries and includes skills required for effective communication, self-development and career progression. Learning takes place in the workplace and at College, with access to specialist coaching and laboratory facilities. The sports, recreation, education and leisure industry has shown continued and rapid growth over recent years and as such is an ideal career destination for students. Within the private sector there has been an increase in the number of fitness centres and within the public sector a host of government initiatives emphasising the importance of physical education. The College has excellent facilities for sport and recreation including a gym, fitness centre, access to golf courses, football pitches and many other sporting-related facilities. The sports department has close links with several sports clubs and organisations including Witton Albion Football Club.

This qualification, which incorporates the TTA standards for Higher Level Teaching Assistants, is designed for people who are currently, or who would like to be, involved with supporting teaching and learning in a classroom environment in Primary, Secondary or Further Education. The course develops knowledge on working in education, including legislation and policies affecting children, behavioural management, how children and adults learn, supporting literacy and numeracy and special needs. Classrooms are fully equipped with interactive whiteboards. There is excellent library support both for text books and online journals. Mid Cheshire College is continually reviewing its very successful Higher Education provision through the development of Foundation Degrees in response to employer demand; providing students with higher-level skills that are required for local industry, whilst also offering progression opportunities on to the final year of an Honours programme. Foundation Degree (FdA) in Public & Community Services This course is designed for people who are, or would like to be, involved in the public service sector. The course will develop the students’ understanding of practical and theoretical disciplines required within public service industries.
