In September 2010 we opened the doors to our new £10m campus in the heart of Winsford and, at Hartford, we are currently building two superb facilities for Performing Arts and Sport, which will be available for use if you join us in 2012. We are specialists in vocational education, offering young people the opportunity to achieve nationally-recognised qualifications in almost all vocational areas, from Beauty Therapy to Plumbing and Science to Uniformed Public Services. With our support you will be well-placed to progress on to further study, Higher Education or employment. You will even have the opportunity to stay with us, if you choose, all the way to Foundation Degree-level. Don’t worry if you are still unsure about what you want to do when you leave school – this brochure will give you some tips and information on what your options are and our experienced tutors and Admissions Team will help you reach the best decision for you. In a £7.5m project to build two new facilities at the College’s Hartford campus, the next 12 months will see a brand new Dance, Drama, Fashion, Media, Photography and Sports facility taking shape. The state of the art building will also house a 200-seat theatre, a great asset to the local community.

Pastoral Care & Support with Learning As a full-time student you will have a personal tutor whom you will meet during induction. Your personal tutor will support you and others in the tutorial group on both an individual and group basis, and you will develop a Personal Action Plan. Learning Support The College positively welcomes students with learning difficulties and disabilities and provides high-quality additional support as required. Buildings on most sites have ramped access and toilets designed for people with disabilities. The Hartford site is equipped with a lift suitable for wheelchair users. Student Involvement The College positively encourages student involvement at all levels. This ranges from commenting on how well your lessons help you learn and on all other aspects of your experience at College, to involvement with the recruitment of staff, to having representatives on College committees and the Governing Body. Students have an active Student Union which all students are automatically members of and which is affiliated to the National Union of Students. They organise social activities, charity events, clubs and societies, and so on, and have a Student Council which meets once a term and advises College Managers. The National Union of Students also organises national discounts on behalf of students, which can be accessed by buying one of their NUS Extra Cards for £11.

The College works very closely with the Connexions Service. If you are still at school you will have access to a Connexions Personal Adviser who will be able to give you impartial advice. If you have left school, Connexions has branches on the high streets of the main towns in Cheshire. Information for Parents/Guardians

We will do our utmost to ensure every student has a quality learning experience. Prior to applying for a place at the College, all potential students will be given plenty of opportunities to find out about Mid Cheshire College and the courses on offer. In school the Connexions Personal Adviser will have details on all of our courses. Potential students will also be offered impartial advice and guidance from specialist Career Officers at the College. The College also offers a taster day to all Year 11 pupils, to enable them to experience their preferred course in a classroom/workshop situation, and get an idea of what the course is really like before they start College. These will be held Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th July 2012.

How to find out more about the College Open Evenings The College Open Evenings for Year 11 pupils will be held at Hartford Campus on Monday 10th October and Wednesday 2nd November 2011 from 6.00pm – 8.30pm. This is a chance to see the College, meet the staff and see the outstanding facilities for yourself. Experienced tutors and the Admissions team will also be on hand to provide information on the qualifications and the courses available.

Advice and Guidance Sessions and Interview Evenings In addition to the Open Evenings, the College holds regular advice and guidance sessions on Thursday evenings between 7.00pm and 8.00pm. These are designed for anyone who hasn’t yet decided which course they would like to do and to gain specific information on the types of qualifications and courses available. Pre-booked interviews will also take place on the same dates for those individuals who have completed an application for a specific course.

Higher Education Opportunities

Once Applied Applications are based on predicted GCSE results. Your son or daughter will need to apply early in Year 11 to ensure that they give themselves enough time to get the advice and guidance they’ll need to ensure they choose the right course for them. They will be invited to an interview, which you can also attend. The College has an open access policy and for some courses there are no entry requirements. For others, the courses have very specific entry requirements, and although the College can offer a provisional place based on predicted GCSE grades, enrolment on their course of choice can only take place after they have received their GCSE results (on Thursday 23rd August 2012).

Mid Cheshire College is a great place for students to continue their education, it offers a wide variety of ‘Further Education’ (post-16) courses and also a varied selection of ‘Foundation Degree’ ‘Higher Education’ courses.

Monitoring and Progress Students have to attend College regularly and act with responsibility during their course. Attendance and progress is carefully monitored and it is the College’s aim, with the student’s permission, to keep parents/guardians informed through parents’ evenings and end of year reports.

Discipline The College is proud of the secure environment it provides for students. All students are given a code of conduct which helps them to ensure that the environment in which they are learning is the most enjoyable for themselves and other students. In the unlikely event that your son or daughter breaches any of the College’s rules there is a clear Disciplinary Procedure which will be followed.

BTEC Diplomas (Level 2)

Functional Skills

Entry Level courses are for those who have gained no formal qualifications at school, need further career guidance and would like to try a range of options with extra support.

These Level 2 qualifications provide a strong basis to progress into junior level employment or Further Education.

As a full-time student (16-18), it is mandatory that you will be studying at least one Functional Skill alongside your main programme. These include English, Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology. Functional Skills are designed to provide the necessary levels of literacy, numeracy and information and communication technology skills needed to ‘function’ in today’s society and workplace.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) NVQs are work-related qualifications, based upon standards set by industry. These concentrate on the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective in specific work situations. All of the NVQs outlined in this prospectus are full-time and are studied at the College.

BTEC Diplomas (Level 1) These Level 1 qualifications give an introduction to a vocational programme and a strong basis for successful study and progression opportunities.

BTEC Extended Diplomas (Equivalent to 3 GCE A Levels) These Level 3 qualifications provide specialised skills, are recognised by employers and are accepted entry qualifications for Higher Education courses at university.

BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art & Design This post-18, but pre-degree course is offered in Art & Design only. It provides the opportunity to develop a portfolio of artwork prior to taking a Degree course in art.

During your first term you will be assessed and then placed on a Functional Skill at a level that is appropriate for you. These skills are important qualifications to achieve and will help you succeed in your chosen career path and life in general. They are recognised by employers and universities. They are about ensuring that what you do is clear, accurate and fit for purpose.

Foundation Degrees The College offers a wide selection of Foundation Degrees, which are vocational Higher Education qualifications that combine workplace learning and experience with academic learning. They are developed and

delivered together by employers, colleges and universities. Foundation Degrees are flexible qualifications â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they place an emphasis on work related learning which may be based on your own employment, work experience, live projects, work related projects or placements. Entry requirements are often flexible too. In Foundation Degree courses academic learning is strongly linked to learning through work. This means that your learning is relevant to your own professional context and enables you to gain the skills and knowledge to be competitive in the workplace and further your career prospects. A full-time programme takes 2 years, usually run over 2 full days each week and a part-time programme between 3 to 4 years to complete. After completing your Foundation Degree you will have the opportunity to carry on learning, either for other professional qualifications or on the final year of certain Honours Degree courses. All Foundation Degrees are validated and run in collaboration with either Manchester Metropolitan University or the University of Chester.

Work Experience Work experience forms an important part of many of our main courses of study and will enable you to put into practice the skills and knowledge you gain on your course.

Apprenticeships If you are aged over 16 you can study for a nationally recognised qualification whilst gaining work experience in employment – as an apprentice you really do get the best of both worlds. Apprentices learn in the workplace. You will be trained in the skills you need for the career you’ve chosen, whilst you work towards a qualification. Your employer will pay your wages and give you ‘on the job’ training. For further information see page 19 of this prospectus.

Entry requirements – what you’ll need to take the next step The level you’ll be studying at will depend on what qualifications you attain. The table below shows what’s needed to study at each different level. We’ll expect you to have an interest in the subject you study and a good school report, and when you come for interview you’ll need to bring your Record of Achievement/Progress file, if you have one. If you’re already a Mid Cheshire student moving up to the next level course, you’ll need supporting reference from your tutor. In certain circumstances, we may make exceptions to these criteria.

Apprenticeships

The proven way to earn as you learn. Apprenticeships give you the chance to earn while you learn. First you’ll need to decide which career suits you best; there are lots to choose from. You’ll work full-time for your employer and attend Mid Cheshire College one day per week, studying for a qualification in the area of work you have chosen. Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged over 16 who is leaving or has already left full-time education. Entry requirements are flexible because Apprenticeships aren’t just based on academic achievement but will depend on the career path chosen. To do well on an Apprenticeship, you need to be focused on your chosen career and be prepared to work hard to achieve success.

What can you expect from your employer? Once you find a job you will agree a learning plan with your employer and Mid Cheshire College and a training programme will be put together for you. Your employer will provide a safe working environment and will also work together with the College to ensure you achieve your qualifications.

What’s expected of you? You will be expected to work normal working hours for your employer to earn your wages. You'll also need to work towards gaining a National Vocational Qualification (QCF) by completing a portfolio demonstrating your competence at work.

What will you gain? You will gain practical experience, skills and knowledge from working in your chosen area of employment. A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)/(QCF) Credit Framework, at Level 2 for an Apprenticeship, or Level 3 for an Advanced Apprenticeship. Studies in Art & Design

An excellent art and design reputation, boosted by stateof-the-art facilities. The Art & Design department is highly regarded and enjoys a deserved reputation for excellence in the region. Art & Design students have the opportunity to work in various media in the two purpose built Arts buildings at the Hartford Campus. They boast a range of spacious art studios, ceramics, multi-material studios and IT rooms. All courses incorporate educational visits to galleries, exhibitions and events. Many also include foreign trips, the most recent of which have included Berlin, Vienna and New York. Photography and Fashion courses will take place in the brand new ÂŁ7.5 million state-of-the-art media, performing arts and sports building which incorporates a number of well-equipped photographic studios, dark rooms and photo imaging and scanning suites. In addition to the design and pattern cutting workshops, fashion students have the use of a dedicated IT suite featuring industry-standard Gerber digital design and plotting equipment.

The studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; achievements are outstanding with excellent progression to Higher Education and employment. The College has close links with local universities, including Chester, Manchester Metropolitan, Salford and Liverpool. Courses are available for everyone who has an interest in art and/or design from Level 1 to Degree level.

Content This course is designed to help you explore various areas within general art and design and build a portfolio of work. You will explore units consisting of researching, drawing, painting, textiles and history of art to produce final outcomes and prepare you for application to BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design. Learning and Assessment Learning takes place through practical studio work, projects and visits and frequent tutorial reviews. Units are assessed through the practical work produced on the course. Some writing is required for all units. Personal and social development skills will also be studied alongside this qualification.

Content This eight unit course is designed to help you decide which area of art and design would be most appropriate for you to specialise in and to acquire a good standard of art, design and functional skills. You will study drawing, painting, textiles, ceramics, 3D design and art history. Learning and Assessment You will undertake practical studio work, independent assignments, lectures and written evaluation. Assessment is continuous and writing is required for all units. Learning takes place through practical work and your progress is reviewed frequently through tutorials.

Entry Requirements 4 GCSEs at grade A* – C or equivalent. You will also need to present a satisfactory portfolio. Content Year 1 – Projects will involve the main areas of art and design activity, including fashion textiles, painting, visual communication, ceramics, art/design history, drawing, graphics and 3D design. Year 2 – Increasing specialism in chosen areas with tutorial discussion and support regarding career progression. Learning and Assessment Work is practical and studio/workshop based although each unit requires written evaluation.

Broaden your understanding of childcare services in the UK and abroad. All childcare courses provide child development and childcare theory from birth to eight years. Each course has a large practical element during which students gain ‘hands-on’ experience in day nurseries, schools, playgroups and families. Practical sessions are enhanced using the College’s new ‘Skills Room’ at the Winsford Campus, classrooms have a state-of-the-art virtual learning environment, including cots, baby changing facilities and a virtual primary school classroom. We provide a real working environment in our commercial hair and beauty salons. Students studying towards a qualification in Hair & Beauty will gain valuable experience from working in our extensively equipped, fully commercial hair and beauty salons at both Hartford and Winsford sites. The new Tranquility Hair and Beauty Salons at the Winsford Campus along with existing salons at Hartford, will be open to the public every day of the week, most evenings during term-time and some selected Saturdays throughout the year. A wide range of treatments are offered at all salons including spa therapy and the College currently uses Decleor and Dermalogica beauty products.

Content This course includes a variety of science units, delivered mainly through practical sessions, investigations and visits. The units include biology, physics, chemistry and forensic science and cover the knowledge and skills required to be employed as a junior science technician.
