OATLANDS
& NEW GLIMPSES OF ITS PLANTATION HISTORY Story and photos by Caitlin Scott
A
car ride across the grounds of Oatlands Historic House and Gardens, a National Historic Landmark and a National Trust for Historic Preservation site, looks very much as it would have on horse or on foot in the 1800s, when it was a plantation belonging to George Carter I, a member of the colonial aristocracy. The immaculate preservation of this property ties us to our past, just like Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello or George Washington’s Mount Vernon. The history of Oatlands defines our nation’s character just as potently, though a significant piece of truth has been kept in shadow for many years. Recent discoveries made by researchers and preservationists at Oatlands have brought local descendants of the enslaved people of the Carter plantations face to face with their ancestors. With this knowledge, a new past must be confronted and, perhaps in time, with the permission of descendants, reconciled. George Carter’s father, Robert Carter III, possessed a kind of enlightenment that was rare but emerging in the 18th century. One of colonial Virginia’s wealthiest and most powerful land and slave owners, Robert Carter somehow came to rest on the severely

unpopular belief that slavery was immoral. Given his surroundings, nothing could have given rise to this belief other than his own humanity, and he paid both financially and socially for the bold action his convictions inspired him to take. Release from slavery was made legal in Virginia in 1782 if certain conditions were met. What was most remarkable about Carter’s 1791 “Deed of Gift” was not that it contained the incendiary language or reformist principles put forth by contemporaries like Thomas Jefferson, but that in it he expressed his intent to emancipate all 452 of his slaves — more than any slave owner in American history ever freed. “The story of Robert Carter shows what didn’t have to happen here,” said Oatlands Director of Education and Programming Lori Kimball. For posterity, Carter’s deed seemed like a promising turn of events. Sadly, it amounted to nothing more than a premature blip of progressive thinking, and it was nearly forgotten altogether. In his book about Carter called The First Emancipator, author and historian Andrew Levy said although he was wealthier than, “owned more land, more slaves [and] as many books” as associates like Thomas Jefferson, George Mason and Patrick Henry,
his name has been all but erased from the American story. Levy said, “As his friends ascended to the mythic status of founders, Carter disappeared from the national stage. No monuments honor him, nor the Deed of Gift. No published map exists that can direct you to…his house and plantation…no stone tells you exactly where his body lies. Sweep through the great bestselling histories of the Revolution and the founders, and you will rarely find even a footnote mentioning Robert Carter.” Carter’s children, embarrassed by their father’s radical ideologies, may have wanted it this way. His son George went so far as to file a suit in 1805 to put a stop to the remaining emancipations, but to no avail. The Virginia Court of Appeals ruled against him, and Carter’s 452 slaves were given their freedom. Any mention of the Deed of Gift, however, was buried with him. In 1804, the year of Carter’s death, George began the construction of Oatlands Plantation on land willed to him by his father. Unable to legally reclaim any of the former slaves, George was forced to purchase more to use for labor on Oatlands’ wheat farm. As he found himself nearing 60, he married wealthy widow Elizabeth Lewis, who brought with her the slaves she
inherited via the wills of her father and first husband. According to Kimball, the wills and her marriage to George broke apart several enslaved families. When George died in 1846, Lewis inherited his Oatlands and Bellefield Plantations and continued to run them with overseers and slaves. By 1860, about 130 enslaved people worked in Oatlands’ greenhouse, gardens, wheat fields and grist and saw mills. That was the year Lewis began keeping a detailed record of the daily happenings at the properties, observing the weather and making references to slaves by first name. “Dr. J to see Alfred,” she said one day, and then soon after, “Alfred better.” Another day — “Sent Julius Armistead the cart with two bushels of potatoes and 20 turkey eggs.” Years later, another entry notes, “Sarah had a child — a girl called Becky.” Read individually, the excerpts seem unremarkable, but they have yielded something rather extraordinary. The diary and other primary and secondary sources have allowed Oatlands researchers to piece together the story of how slaves were treated at the Carter plantations. “From Elizabeth’s diary, we’ve extracted about 900 references to enslaved people,”
said Kimball, who has been using census reports and the information obtained from the diary to build a database of names. “The database contains about 120 unique names, which we’re offering as a source for descendants and others who want to learn about the people who were enslaved at Oatlands and Bellefield.” Many descendants still live close by. Af-
ter the Civil War, their ancestors purchased land and settled in the nearby communities of Gleedsville and Howardsville. “After the enslaved people were freed, most had no money. They had never been taught to read or write, and couldn’t leave friends and family behind, so they stayed,” said Kimball. “We’re intent on researching History | Page 6

History | From page 5 these names because there are so many families here with ties to Oatlands and Bellefield.” Kevin Grigsby, for example, is a direct descendant of Sophia and Jacob Howard, whose names were mentioned most in Elizabeth’s diary and were among the first freed slaves to settle Howardsville. Grisby used the diary for research to write two books — one on the founding of Howardsville and one on the roles African-Americans have played in Loudon County. Both highlight Loudon’s African-American heritage and allow those with roots in the area to discover the story of their past. The diary has also prompted the start of an annual event at Oatlands called Descendants Day, which Kimball organized in 2015. Families from Howardsville and Gleedsville and relatives who have left the area are invited to gather every year to share their stories and learn about their family history. Each year, the gathering grows by increments as families connect with one another over their shared past — an experience that proves simultaneously uplifting and painful. Oatlands Executive Director Bonnie LePard described the event as “powerful, evocative and emotional.”

As a public National Historic Landmark, Oatlands hosts many events throughout the year. Not one compares to the sentiments felt when descendants stepped onto the property for the first time with the knowledge that their relatives were once enslaved here. Few experiences can match the emotion that arises from touching bricks forged by the hands of one’s ancestors, or from setting one’s eyes on the same view they once took in. Oatlands remains dedicated to its mission to unearth and present the facts of history, with the
hope that new knowledge continues to shift attitudes, inspire progress and bring people together. ML On p. 4: The mansion was originally built in 1804 by George Carter. It was renovated in the 1820s to reflect the Greek revival style we see today. On p. 5: The greenhouse was built by slaves in 1810 from brick and iron, and shows the Carters’ interest in modern horticultural practices. Above: The brick building in the garden is called the garden dependency. It is believed to have been used by slaves as a kitchen and laundry.

MIDDLEBURG
On the half shell By Peter Milligan Photos courtesy of King St. Oyster Bar
“I
was tired of going all the way to D.C. for a good oyster.” Simple words, but that’s all the motivation it took to get longtime chef Rick Allison and his business partner Jorge Esguerra to open King St. Oyster Bar in Leesburg, Virginia. From there, Allison’s culinary know-how, paired with Esguerra’s business acumen, topped off with Leesburg’s equally hungry appetite for mollusk mastery, has made King St. Oyster Bar a true hot spot. Now, the duo is bringing their much sought after oyster offerings to Middleburg. Much of the success that Allison and Esguerra hope to replicate in Middleburg comes from the culinary vision of the man behind the food. Chef Allison graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. From there, he went on to cook at some of the most recognizable restaurant names in the Washington, D.C. Metro area, including the Great American Restaurants like Mike’s “American” and Sweetwater Tavern, Clyde’s restaurants and the Old Ebbitt Grill in Northwest D.C. He also operates two food trucks – one serving fresh raw bar fare similar to the Oyster Bar, and another called Pittsburgh Rick’s, which serves, among other ‘yinzer’ specialties, the notoriously indulgent Primanti Bros. style sandwiches, piled high with fresh-cut fries, a slice of tomato and classic apple cider vinegar slaw. But at the Oyster bar, both at the current location on King Street in Leesburg and the future new digs in Middleburg, seafood is king; and if there were a king of kings at this establishment, it is indeed the oyster. Allison and his team get their oysters from both the East Coast (primarily Maine) and west coast (primarily Washington State), and they are able to get them 24 and 48 hours out of the water, respectively. That means outside of perhaps New England, you’re not getting a much fresher east coast oyster.

And in addition to the classic raw preparation which, for purists, means just the oyster in all its briny glory, the team at King St. Oyster Bar is serving up a preparation they say is not being replicated anywhere else in the area: grilled oysters. That includes: • Chipotle crusted, with a smoky trifecta
of andouille sausage, chipotle and bacon. •
Casino, with bacon (do you sense a theme?), chilies and a citrus butter.
•
Bacon wrapped, with a balsamic reduction.
•
Rockefeller, with spinach, Parmigiano-Reggiano and fontina cheeses.
•
And perhaps the most decadent, the King Street, with succulent blue crab, intensely salty Tasso ham and roasted corn.
A fun twist to start out the restaurant’s entrance in the Middleburg market, King St. Oyster Bar will be holding a contest to name their signature oyster, which hails from Hog
Island, Virginia, one of the Commonwealth’s easternmost islands. They’re also doing other classic seafood bar offerings, like crab cakes made exclusively with jumbo lump meat (the Cadillac of crabmeat), and lobster rolls that are spilling over with big, fat, fresh pieces of lobster shipped straight from Maine’s coast. Besides the can’t-miss seafood that will be making its way from the Leesburg, King St. Oyster Bar is also bringing one of the area’s best happy hours to town, which includes $5 menu specials and halfpriced oysters every single day from 3-6:30 p.m. As if the food itself wasn’t enough, there’s even more reason to pay a visit to King St. Oyster Bar. Allison is part of the Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP) – a 501(c)(3) that promotes scientifically-sustainable shellfish ecological restoration in the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays. The ORP takes recycled oyster shells from Allison’s restaurants, and using artificially implanted larva, places those oysters back into the

bays to filter what will one day be 30 gallons of water per day, keeping the waters of the bays clean. And back to the food, Allison hopes that both locations offer the same feeling – of home, comfort, relaxation and a full belly. “We want everyone to know that we’ve made an investment in Middleburg, and that we’re here to stay,” said Allison. “I’ll be around often to meet new people, make relationships, and make sure folks are having great, fresh food in a comfortable setting.” ML On p. 8, top: King St. oysters on the half shell. PETS OF THE MONTH Thelma & Louise — Molly Mules Owner Middleburg Humane Foundation Age 11 years old. Name Origin Thelma is an invented name, created in Britain 1887. Louise is a popular English name. Describe yourself in three words Healthy, Shy, Bonded What’s your story? We have been a bonded pair ever since we can remember. In our younger years, we were Amish buggy mules but we were not treated well at all even though we performed our jobs. It was scary and we were traumatized. We almost lost our lives at a slaughter auction in Pennsylvania. Luckily a local Virginia woman found us at the auction and saved our lives. A group of people organized to find us a safe place to stay but it was not a permanent home.
What do you like about MHF? Someone reached out to MHF asking if we could live there, and they said yes! We have a nice pasture and runin shed and see lots of other equines. They speak to us gently and we are slowly learning to trust humans. What is your best feature? We are very health, have naturally great feet and would be able to do anything, with the right training and handling. If you were likened to a celebrity, who would you be? It’s not Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in Thelma & Louise! We are still here and they drove off a cliff. Did you know there is an alternative ending for that movie? Do you follow a special diet? No, we don’t have a special diet. If you had one wish what would it be? We had a lot of trauma in our past and
need an experienced, loving and patient mule person to work with us! We are only 11 and dream of a long, happy life with someone. ML Article courtesy of Melanie Burch, director of development. For more information, visit middleburghumane.org or call 540-364-3272. Middleburg Humane Foundation operates a private, 4.5-acre farm shelter located in Marshall, Virginia. The Return of
Art in the ‘Burg Photos and story by Morgan Hensley
T
he gray clouds looming over South Pendleton Street during Art in the ‘Burg were ominous, particularly given the context of the event. Last year the annual celebration of local art was canceled not once, but twice; first a downpour threatened to wash the watercolors off the canvas, then a blistering heatwave canceled the already postponed festivities. You’d think that, given the circumstances, attendees and artists would be on edge. If anything, the opposite was true. Smiles and cheerfulness abounded all along the side-street. Why wouldn’t everyone be jubilant? They were surrounded by art! The fourth annual Art in the ‘Burg, which began in 2013, corralled a diverse set of the area’s finest artists. Their styles, subjects and media varied widely. Many were formally trained, others were self-taught. Many were Art in the ‘Burg veterans, others were welcomed newcomers. Each

artist was unique, but together the group existed in a well-balanced harmony; just like any great piece of art, the disparate parts collectively create a beautiful whole. Regardless of their artistic stylings, all were united by their shared sense of community, passion for creativity and nearly palpable gratitude for having the event go off without a hitch. The event coincided with the culmination of a wildly successful new addition: the hard-to-miss Foxes on the Fence. The project, which was the brainchild of artist and Middleburg Arts Council Chairwoman Debbie Cadenas, breathed new life into the iconic image. Artists paired with local businesses to create 33 vibrant, four-foot prancing foxes that have drawn swaths of spectators since they were hung on the wrought-iron gate around Middleburg United Methodist Church April 1. An excited Brad Bondi loved the garden art so much that he purchased four of them. “It’s a brilliant way of showcasing our local
artists while benefiting a great cause,” he said. Middleburg Garden Club President Darcy Justen estimated that the online auction for the pieces raised more than $20,000, portions of which will be donated to the Middleburg Arts Council, Seven Loaves, community beautification projects and scholarships to nature camps. The crowd favorite, as determined by online voting, was Brenda Griffin’s wintry scene sponsored by the Crooked Angels, marital and musical duo Jamie and Amy Potter. During the event, Jamie strummed and plucked his way through a solo show, serenading an attentive audience with their signature “bourbon-infused Americana” and some wonderful covers. Perhaps his rendition of Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up,” a radiant reggae staple, helped to keep the rain at bay. Attendees flocked to the tent-lined street to talk with the 21 artists about their craft, engage with their work and perhaps leave with Art | Page 16

Art | From page 14 a piece of art, a memento of their Art in the ‘Burg excursion. In fact, the first artwork was sold an hour before the event —which ran from 11a.m. to 3p.m. — even began! Gomer Pyles, a familiar sight around Middleburg with his bushy beard and tie-dye, displayed his photographs. He first dabbled with photography in the 70s when he was hitchhiking and backpacking his way down the road less traveled. During that time, he “sensed that a photograph was a captured moment in time where the eyes meet the landscape with a grin or scowl.” After suffering a stroke in 2009, Pyles, quick to see the silver lining, noticed that the attack had given him a “child’s set of eyes”; he witnessed landscapes and nature with awe, as though seeing them for the first time. The stroke also increased his patience, a valuable trait for any photographer. He pointed to a photograph of several horses, their silhouettes aligned, peering over a stone wall. “I waited an hour for them to turn and line up that way,” he said. “Even if I’d missed the shot, I’d still have experienced the moment, and that’s never a waste of time. That’s Gomer philosophy 101 for you.” To illustrate the event’s diversity, compare Pyles’ photographs with Alice Porter’s black and white foxhunting scenes. Her displayed works were culled from hundreds of photographs taken over the course of dozens of hunts.

It’s a brilliant way of showcasing our local artists while benefitting a great cause. An alumna of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Rhode Island School of Design, two of the country’s most esteemed visual arts programs, her artwork spans years, media and locations. Early sketches illustrate her travels through Europe as a teenager and young adult while her sporting photographs reveal a talented, mature artistic vision. This was painter and high school art teacher Elaine Florimonte’s first time at Art in the ‘Burg. Her semi-abstracted, emotive paintings filter forests, rivers, fields and other pastoral imagery through a vibrant, distorted lens. “As an artist, I feel that art is a language,” she said. “The voice of my expression. Much like music, art must have order, structure and pattern; an underlying rhythm that carries the eye through a piece.” Leslie Paterson, a retired arts instructor,
incorporates found objects into her acrylic paintings. “I love texture, that’s my favorite element,” she said, directing my attention to a painting that seamlessly intertwining Leyland cypress and plastic grapes with a palette of rich impasto. Padma Jan Koch’s art — which spans media such as three-dimensional tiles, Eastern-inspired paintings, jewelry, journals and Christmas tree ornaments — exudes movement, expression and color. “Whatever we’re passionate about shows up on the canvas then takes off,” she said. Then there were the sculptures and “guerrilla gardening flower-bombs” of Courtney Kincaid; the dip-dyed jewelry of Heather Albro; the beachscapes by Lori Goll; the atmospheric, tonalist landscapes of Beaver Dam Farm by Laura Hopkins; and the Technicolor iridized glass mosaics by Lynn Savage Dimoff. All in all, Art in the ‘Burg was a huge success after its one-year hiatus. The consensus of artists and attendees alike was one of thankfulness to the Middleburg Arts Council for organizing the event and also an eagerness to see what 2018 holds in store. ML On p. 14, left: Gomer Pyles presents his photographs. On p. 14, right: Courtney Kincaid and Heather Albro display their sculpture and dip-dyed jewelry. Above left: Alice Porter’s foxhunting scenes were one of the highlights. Above right: Elaine Florimonte’s work illustrates layers of emotion.

THEN & THERE
Sidesaddle mysteries Story and photos by Richard Hooper
T
he modern sidesaddle is a culmination of innovations that evolved over
centuries. It came about by women seeking more comfort and control over the horse, to look forward and proceed at a pace beyond an amble, to jump — and, perhaps, to show a bit of leg. Mary of Burgundy (1457-1482) is credited as being the first woman to ride aside while looking forward. During Mary’s time, women rode either astride or facing totally sideways. The customary sideways saddle had a back support with a footrest (a planchette or plank) suspended from one side of the saddle. The rider’s shoulders would thus be parallel to the spine of the horse. Legend has Mary hooking her leg over the pommel of a man’s saddle. However, she could have very acceptably and simply ridden astride. Mary could have also been riding what can be thought of as a dual-sex saddle that was in use at that time. It had a high pommel and was designed so that it could accommodate either stirrups on both sides (for riding astride) or the totally sideways saddle with a planchette. A keen hunter and horsewoman, she could have become frustrated during the chase (albeit a slowly paced one) with her feet on the planchette and in a moment of inspiration (necessity is the mother of invention) hooked her right leg around the pommel of such a saddle — now, she could see what was going on in front of her! Her motivation remains a mystery and her technique appears to have not caught on. It is about 100 years before the next step of note in the evolution of the sidesaddle. Catherine de’ Medici (1519-1589), married to Henri d’Orleans (later King Henri II), was Italian and generally disliked by the French court. She managed to ingratiate herself with Henri’s father, King Francis I, through wit, intelligence, dancing and — certainly not least — riding. She hunted often with Francis and became Mysstery | Page 22

Mystery | From page 20 part of an elite group of equestriennes known as the Petite Bande. Catherine also had to become an especially skilled rider to shine as brightly in that endeavor as Henri’s mistress, Diane de Poitiers. Like many others, Catherine took her falls — cracking her skull in one. Her rival, Diane de Poitiers, broke a leg. The ill-fated Mary of Burgundy, while hunting with her falcon, fatally suffered a broken back when her horse fell and rolled on her. Some historians claim she was attempting to jump a ditch when the accident occurred. French hunting saddles during Catherine’s time had a large, padded roll at the front. The roll could have a U-shaped depression in the middle, which Catherine could have had enlarged, into which she could hook her right leg. Not content with that seat, Catherine took a giant leap forward and added a second horn to the saddle. It would be logical to conclude that it was for safety. However, historians generally agree that it was to help hold up her skirt, thus showing off a bit of her ankle, calf and colorful stockings that were in vogue. Poor Catherine! The court could find little that it considered beautiful in her appearance, so she created the opportunity to display as much of her leg (by all accounts, considered quite lovely) as possible. Thus began the ascendency of the forward facing sidesaddle seat. While riding aside came to dominate women’s riding, there were some startling exceptions of women riding otherwise. There are portraits of Marie Antoinette riding astride, as well as aside, and Catherine the Great is known to have commanded that women ride astride. The last great innovation came in 1830, when Jules Charles Pellier, French riding-master, added the leaping head to women’s saddles. It is a third horn that allows an increased grip by the leg, especially in jumping. His idea, however, may have been inspired by an alteration to a man’s some 40 or so years earlier, when a leaping head of sorts may have been used by the English huntsman Thomas Oldaker. After suffering a broken leg, he added a curved crutch to the side of his saddle to wrap around the top of his thigh, giving him a firmer grip. It’s just another mystery. Instructional manuals for riding aside began appearing early in the 19th century. Along with theories and instructions on riding and practical matters was advice on decorum. In “The Young Lady’s Equestrian Manual,” published in London in 1838, an anonymous author states that “for numerous reasons, which must occur to our readers, a lady should never be seen in the act of positively flogging her steed: such a sight would destroy every previous idea that had been

formed of her grace or gentleness.” While riding aside began to fall out of favor after World War I, it never became extinct. There is now a renaissance of interest and it is no mystery that much “grace and gentleness” will be on view in the always-popular sidesaddle classes at the Upperville Colt & Horse Show. A NOT-SOSECRET GARDEN Story and Photos by Callie Broaddus
P
erfect imperfection: a single delicate long-headed poppy emerges from the verdant cracks between the flagstones of a carefully cultivated landscape — a botanist’s paradise that evokes scenes from The Secret Garden, with its ivy-blanketed doorways and cozy vignettes of pleached and pruned fruit trees. But this garden, though private, is far from secret.
It was the home sanctuary of the late Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, who died in 2014 at the age of 103. Though Mrs. Mellon led a very private life, she established the Oak Spring Garden Foundation in the hopes that her library, gardens, residence and estate would be a resource for those who shared her love of horticulture, helping scientists, artists and scholars to study the history and plan for the future of plants and gardening. The man at the helm of the young founda-
tion is modest, affable and undeniably qualified. Sir Peter Crane joined the Oak Spring Garden Foundation as its inaugural president in 2016, departing from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies after seven years serving as dean of the prestigious academic program. In addition to many other accolades, Crane was previously the Director of the famed Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, the Director at the Field Museum of Natural HisGarden | Page 27

He was knighted in 2004 for his contributions to British horticulture and continues to be a fixture in the scientific community, publishing scientific papers, participating in international botanical conferences and in 2013 writing a well-received popular book, Ginkgo: The Tree That Time Forgot. For Crane, the opportunity to move to Oak Spring Farm, after a long career overseeing several prestigious institutions, was too exciting to pass up. “You don’t very often get the opportunity to help shape the direction of a new organization,” he said. “A lot of people working in these fields that I care about will benefit from the resources of the foundation over time. So, that’s really the excitement of it for me.” So far, the foundation has been growing gradually, working with interns, initiating a full site survey of the foundation’s 263 acres and participating in various exhibits and conferences both at home and abroad. Crane described it as a ‘philanthropic startup.’ “You know, on one level, we’re worried about really important things — like the mission and the investments — and then on the other end, we’re worried about whether we have enough chairs to sit on.” Looking forward, the estate will host visiting scholars, writers, artists and an increased number of interns from prestigious programs Garden | Page 28

These fortunate academics will have the chance to access a treasure trove in what is arguably Mrs. Mellon’s most prized legacy, her library of over 16,000 original manuscripts, books and pieces of botanical artwork which she carefully curated over the course of her life. In accordance with the foundation’s goals as established by Mrs. Mellon herself, the foundation staff have begun digitizing these priceless assets to make them available to a wider audience. Access to the gardens and library is by appointment only. So, although the Oak Spring Garden Foundation won’t host the millions of visitors each year who visited the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and it won’t have the solely academic focus of Yale University or the number of exhibits hosted by the Field Museum in Chicago, Crane said the essence of the foundation is a mix of his past experiences. “There’s a scholarship component, there’s a research component, but then also an obligation to share and make this wonderful legacy more available. To perpetuate Mrs. Mellon’s legacy and to share Mrs. Mellon’s legacy in the best possible way … in ways that serve the public interest. So even though it’s a small operation, with a small team, we want to have

a big impact... to reach out and have a kind of global presence. And I think that’s very possible.” As Crane continues driving the scientific contributions of the organization forward through asset digitization, site evaluation and outreach, he relies on the knowledge of his staff to ensure the organization honors the historical importance of the estate. “I didn’t have the opportunity to meet Mrs. Mellon in person,” Crane said, “so I have to experience her, in a way, through the memories and contacts of the staff here, many of whom worked with her for many, many years, and knew her really well.” This close personal knowledge of Mrs. Mellon’s design intention is part of what makes these gardens so unique. “To some extent, I always lean on those in our gardening team who knew Mrs. Mellon well in order to match the aesthetic she wanted to create,” Crane said, explaining that the official records kept describing the garden’s history have not always been precise. And so it is that
the long-headed poppies, Queen Ann’s lace, creeping thyme and other splashes of color continue to shoulder their way out from between the garden flagstones, just the way Mrs. Mellon liked them … not “unnaturally tidy,” but perfectly imperfect. CONSIDERING A HOME SALE? By Walter Woodson
F
inancial challenges…Emotional rollercoaster…Uncertain change. These are some of the key factors in many important life events — including the sale of a home. Nevertheless, with all the information available on the internet, social media and television networks like HGTV, it’s easy to see why some home sellers believe they’ve got a firm grasp on the selling business — more than 90 percent of buyers begin their searches on the internet. Why bother with an agent? There are plenty of reasons. As I said, the sale of one’s home can be an emotional event and financial consequences are significant. Back in the day, many deals were settled by a handshake or a contract inked on a cocktail napkin. Those days are long gone.
Today real estate contracts, inspections, legal matters, loans, etc., are complex and rules regularly change. The steady hand of an experienced professional can steer the right course through choppy seas. Here are a few of the myriad concerns facing today’s seller (and buyer): • When is the best time to sell? Spring is the default answer, but serious buyers are looking in all seasons. However, buyers with school children are less likely to purchase in the fall to avoid disrupting the school year. Key life changes are not seasonal. Death, divorce, downsizing and job transfers happen all the time. Your agent is your advocate, freeing you up to focus on other matters. •
How is the market? Right now the
markets in Loudoun, Fauquier and nearby counties are brisk. For example, closed sales in Loudoun are up 14.4 percent over a year ago and up 10.5 percent in Fauquier (Smart Charts, April-to-April). However, expect interest rate increases later in the year — many homebuyers are buying and locking in better rates now. •
Staging your property for sale is essential. It can be little more than de-cluttering. You want just enough furniture and accessories, so buyers can paint their own picture when looking at your home.
•
Laws are strict about disclosure. The bottom line is you must disclose any and all known defects. Better still, address key issues before you list.
•
Educated pricing is essential. Be realistic. Know assessed versus appraised

MEET MIDDLEBURG
Liz Turnure, bank teller Story and photo by Kerry Phelps Dale
I
f she knows you, and chances are she does, Liz Turnure will greet you enthusiastically by name as soon as you pass into the lobby of the Middleburg Bank. Her warmth and engaging personality are not lost on the bank’s customers. Some wait patiently to be served by her and no one else, as she asks them how their day is going, inquires about their health and family or remarks on their new haircut. “Nobody at home even noticed,” replied the smiling customer. “Why in the world would the bank put the life of the party in the window?” shouted a regular customer when he saw Liz working the drive-thru window, not her usual domain. After staying at home to raise her four now-grown children, Liz decided to take a job simply, she thought, to pay the family’s exorbitant annual health care premiums.
But Liz soon discovered how much she had missed seeing old friends and acquaintances from years prior, before children, when the couple’s social life was anchored in the Middleburg community, and that “talking to people every day is really fun. I’m
a real talker,” she said. “I love being in Middleburg — people will read my nametag and most of them recognize my name from Bill being an architect in town for so long,” Liz said. Her husband Bill is the owner of Turnure Architecture, formed in 1994, and a Middleburg architect for 37 years. Before having children, Liz taught elementary school in Rappahannock and Fauquier counties and at Highland School in Warrenton where the Turnures have lived since 1987 before the birth of their first child. “I absolutely loved being a teacher and to this day some of my favorite people are former students and teachers I worked with,” said Liz. Years of being a teacher schooled Liz in the nuances of bringing out the best in others and the power of a friendly face. “I like to make people feel good about themselves,” said Liz. “Sometimes it’s just a kind word.” ML

G
race Episcopal Church, The Plains, VA announces its call to a new rector, the Reverend Edward Weston Mathews of Richmond, VA. Weston Mathews comes to Grace from St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Richmond, where he has served as Associate Priest for the past three years. Before becoming an Episcopal priest, he taught high school history in Nelson County, VA. The Discernment Committee of Grace Church conducted a year-long search for its permanent rector. According to the Committee, “We believe Weston’s varied experiences, deep spirituality, and friendly personality will enable him to lead Grace Church in new directions and will make him a valuable asset to the community. The parishioners of Grace look for-
ward with great anticipation to welcoming Weston and Hannah and we encourage others from the community to come and get to know him.” Weston and his wife Hannah, who is completing her doctorate in special education at the University of Virginia, will move to The Plains area in the coming month, along with their two rescue dogs, Wills and Harry. He will be in the church office on June 26 and will preach his first sermon at Grace Church on Sunday July 2. Sunday services at Grace Episcopal Church are at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The church is located at 6507 Main Street in The Plains, VA. Land Trust of Virginia (LTVA) celebrated their 25th year, May 21 at Wind Fields Farm in Middleburg, Virginia. The organization began as an all-volunteer agency, but is now fully and professionally staffed. Today, LTVA holds 151 easements, which include more than 16,000 acres in Virginia. They are currently working with landowners to add 2,000 additional acres. LTVA’s strategic vision now includes an area that ranges from the northern Blue Ridge Mountains to the Potomac River in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. It is the largest unprotected area with only 15 percent of its 200,000 acres under easement. Steward of the Year was presented to Sam and Uta Brown. They donated two
easements to the Land Trust totaling 90 acres; half of that land is within the town limits of Purcellville, Virginia. Landowner of the Year went to Dr. Thomas Gilbert, who donated 334 acres of easement in Culpeper County, Virgnia. Conservationist of the Year went to Turner Smith. He was a key player in the effort to become accredited with the Land Trust Alliance. Photos: 1. Conservationist of the Year, Turner Smith. 2. MYSTIQUE
RETURNS TO MIDDLEBURG
By Dulcy B. Hooper mys·tique (mĭ-stēk’) n. A quality of being special in a mysterious and attractive way.
A
fter an absence of several years, Mystique Jewelers returned to Middleburg and opened its shop in a new location May 6 with a Jude Frances trunk show. Present for the event were many new and returning customers all no doubt happy to celebrate the shop’s return and admire Mystique’s collection. Elizabeth Mandros, Mystique’s founder, is serious about jewelry. “I have always loved the beauty and allure of gemstones,” she said. “And I believe that Mystique appeals to women who have a strong sense of style, know what they like, and want to create a jewelry wardrobe.” A gemologist by training, Mandros is a native of Alexandria, Virginia. She opened her first location in Old Town, Alexandria, over 25 years ago with the goal of “bringing unique jewelry custom designs to Old Town.” In 2003, she moved to Upperville, Virginia, and continued to commute to her shop in Old Town. “I’ve been in business since 1991,” said Mandros. “And over the winter, as my business was turning 25 years old, I started to give it a lot of thought. I decided that what I really wanted to do was to open a second store, closer to where I live.” Mandros’s daughter is a student at The Hill School in Middleburg, Virginia, and Mandros said that she wanted to be more personally involved in what is going on in the community. “It’s not that I minded driving to Alexandria every day,” she said. “I love to work — it is a total passion for me and the drive was just part of that. But I was missing so much by not having a shop here and being able to spend more time where I live.” Mandros’s love of polo and country living were what initially attracted her to the Middleburg area, and she said that much of the inspiration for Mystique’s Middleburg location drew upon that passion. “I wanted to create an atmosphere that embraces both my love for family and for the equestrian lifestyle,” she said. “The Middleburg store will be quite different from the Old Town store.” Mandros said that customers can expect to find “country chic and sophisticated pieces” and that she plans to offer a new equestrian line, along with custom designs and redesign services. Mandros personally selects everything that is in the store.

“Because I have been doing this for 25 years, I have a lot of connections around the world,” she said. “I can obtain beautiful pieces at a competitive price, which I then pass on to my customers.” Mystique Jewelers has a full-time goldsmith who, with Mandros, designs new pieces and reconfigures existing pieces. “A customer just stopped by the store a few days ago,” said Mandros. “She brought her entire jewelry box and, together, we went through it all. Some we will redesign; some may go up for sale by consignment. But what we are doing is giving new life to what was in that jewelry box.” Mandros prides herself on attention to detail, customer service and quality products. That commitment and level of detail has been widely recognized, with Mystique Jewelers being awarded the Best of Alexandria and Best of Washington, Virginia, Virginia Living’s Top Wedding Vendor, Virginia Living’s Best Jeweler, Alexandria Business Hall of Fame and JCK Top 50 Designer Retailer. 3 4 The Middleburg Garden Club held its annual garden tour Friday, May 26. This has become an annual spring rite of passage as locals open their homes and some of the region’s most amazing gardens for limited public viewing. One of this year’s venues was just west of Middleburg, where Caroline and Jon Stout hosted an afternoon tea at Shawmark Farm. Middleburg Life was on hand to capture a few images of the garden and the Stouts’ spectacular estate. ML

GIVING LIFE TO A DEAD LANGUAGE By Kennedy Bryant
L
ocated on the cusp of Loudoun and Fauquier counties, Middleburg Academy is filled with people, ideas, cultures and backgrounds. As part of its commitment to its students, Middleburg Academy hires the best educators from all over the world. Among the excellent faculty is a new and exuberant teacher, originally from the Netherlands, Dr. Jan-Piet Knijff. At first glance, it is Knijff ’s height that draws attention. Standing at 6’5”, he is reminiscent of Jack Skellington (the Pumpkin King and main protagonist in “The Nightmare Before Christmas”) in the best possible way. His larger-than-life personality draws students toward a language that is often considered dead, but as Knijff is quick to point out, it “is still very much alive in [his] classroom.” First-year Latin student Ashleigh Mof-
fett agreed: “He brings the language to life by speaking it with us and helping us understand it.” Knijff ’s approach to teaching Latin as a living language — rather than translating it word for word into English — is both innovative and a key component of student success. He teaches students not only about the Latin language but also about the culture and how Latin influences other aspects of life, such as music. Knijff uses traditional methods as well as new techniques to teach his students. The textbook he uses is the very same textbook he used to teach himself Latin for the second time. Knijff studied Latin in the Netherlands for six years, sometimes five or six class periods a week. Like many Latin students, he was “able to translate word for word complicated texts,” but he admitted, “I had absolutely no idea how I did it.” Much later, when he started
teaching Latin as a hobby of sorts, he learned that “you can teach it just like any other foreign language — by speaking and writing it.” As a result, Knijff strives to provide his students with the most dynamic, well-rounded Latin education possible.

In addition to the textbook, he also has his students do Latin crosswords and read funny short stories, which he often writes. Knijff frequently reads Latin texts for fun, which helps give him ideas for class activities and discussions. When asked how long it takes him to create crosswords for class, he said, “I don’t even consider writing a fun Latin puzzle a job. I just enjoy doing it!” That attitude seems to come across in the classroom. Second-year Latin student Demarcus Spivey said with a smile that he “gives you compliments if you do something good and has an amazing personality.” Parents are also very happy with Knijff and the Middleburg Academy Latin department. Middleburg parent Kim Smith said, “Latin is a cornerstone language and a necessary foundation for a solid education,” and she is grateful that her child has an opportunity to learn from such an accomplished teacher. Another parent, Henrich Heuer, said, “It would be wonderful for my daughter to learn enough Latin to be able to read Ovid or Virgil.” A true Renaissance man, Knijff speaks at least five languages, including Latin, Ancient Greek, German, French and, of course, Dutch (although he admits that “it’s getting a bit rusty these days”), and is also an
accomplished performer in many aspects of music. A professional pianist and organist, he has also sung and conducted professionally and played tuba in a Dixieland jazz band. A winner of the International Bach Competition in Lausanne, Switzerland, Knijff ’s musical skill can be aptly described as exceptional. He encourages students to make music as much as possible and is often found playing duets at the piano in the foyer of the academic building with students. His skill and experience as a performer are only one part of what makes him an excellent music teacher. Colley Bell, one of Knijff ’s piano students, said, “I enjoy the unique style that Knijff brings to the classroom,” and his previous experience as a performer “has helped me develop a relationship with him through piano.” Despite his many professional accomplishments, it is his love of teaching students that shines through most. Although he has performed in concerts for many years, he feels “increasingly dissatisfied” with that format. While living in Australia, he “experimented with something we called ‘Jan-Piet’s choice,’ in which I would play a piece of music, often with a student or colleague, and discuss aspects of the music and the
performance with the audience. I have been looking for ways to do that here in Middleburg also.” Indeed, Knijff never misses an opportunity to introduce his classes to all forms of music, from classical to Broadway to Pete Seeger and Judy Collins. He even treated attendees at his recent recital in Middleburg Academy’s Mary House to a taste of Jan-Piet’s choice. Perhaps the best way to describe Knijff is “more.” He’s always looking for more out of himself, out of his students, and seemingly out of life itself. One third-year Latin student said, ”I’ve learned much about the language and culture but, perhaps more importantly, I’ve learned a lot about myself.” Knijff ’s unique approach to teaching combines not only the rules and grammar of a language, but also a deep passion for culture, literature and education that is contagious. ML Kennedy Bryant just finished her first year at Middleburg Academy and looks forward to serving as president of her sophomore class next year. She enjoys playing competitive volleyball, reading books nonstop, shopping with her friends, and — of course — studying Latin. Left: Dr. Jan-Piet Knijff. Photo courtesy of Middleburg Academy.

JOAN GARDINER — RENAISSANCE WOMAN Photos and story by Kerry Phelps Dale
I
t all started with a leaky roof, a valuable painting and a New Yorker short story. Joan Gardiner, a potter, and her husband, John, a novelist and short story writer, lived in their humble cottage with a leaky roof in historic Unison, Virginia. On the 18th century plaster walls of their living room hung a painting handed down to John from his New England family. The couple knew nothing of the painting until a visiting friend recognized the artist, Frances Augustus Silva, from a recent exhibit at the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art. The Gardiners decided to sell their surprisingly valuable painting hoping it might bring enough money to fix the roof. When they turned the painting over to a fine art auction house, they were delighted to learn that its value far exceeded their expectations. The real-life story was creative nectar for John Gardiner who wrote a fictional piece for the New Yorker, one of the most prestigious of literary magazines. The wife in the story, “American Light,” was an artist who made porcelain relief tiles. “I really identified with her,” said Gardiner. So much so that the potter felt it was a foretelling of her intended career. Ever since, she has eschewed the wheel for the worktable in the creation of ceramic painted and relief tiles. The Edward Lear (best known for The Owl

and The Pussy Cat) inspired alphabet tile border adorning her home’s kitchen was her first project in what developed into both a passion and profession. Ceramic tiles proved to be the ideal medium to highlight Gardiner’s art education, gift of storytelling and playful wit. Gardiner is first an artist: a painter and a sculptor. Educated at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore, she realized early on that functional art appealed more to her sensibilities than paintings and sculptures. The seemingly pointless pattering about what a painting meant or what an artist was trying to express and the endless critiquing of artistic expression did not suit Gardiner. She found herself drawn to the potter’s wheel, the kiln and the creation of functional art. To make her point, if only to herself, she once produced a painting that she transformed into the front doors of a small cabinet. “I was only comfortable if something also had a function,” said Gardiner. When she transitioned from fine art to pottery, she found her art home among the clay artists. “They are more inclusive and share more. It’s not a competitive group,” said Gardiner. And she didn’t have to explain her work. The body of work Gardiner is most known for are her tiles made from red and white clay. In the hand-making of these tiles, Gardiner has created the very canvas for both painting and sculpting. Even her simple unadorned tiles, are works of art with their rich glazes and undulating surfaces.
If Gardiner is first an artist, she is second a storyteller. It is her sense of humor and keen awareness of how history informs the present and future that most influence much of her noncommission work. Her creative and intelligent interpretation of time and place have garnered her mural contracts for nearly every public library in Loudoun County. Her affinity for the accurate and artistic depiction of nature’s plant and animal bounty have put her tiles in the kitchens and bathrooms of some of the area’s finest homes. The Rust Library in Leesburg, Virginia, is home to what Gardiner says is probably her favorite of her large works. Her vision led to multiple murals throughout the library acknowledging the generous benefactor, A.V. Symington, and celebrating the events of the philanthropist’s lifetime. An assemblage of Gardiner’s work is installed throughout the library, including individual tiles and smaller murals, a veritable gallery of the dynamic range of the functional work of a true artist. Currently in the throes of the Sterling library commission, Gardiner’s worktable is covered with an oversized tile of a 1960s pickup truck. The “Journeys to Sterling” mural will depict the migration to the immigrant rich community of Sterling, Virginia, through tiles rendered from photos of actual residents, images of communities of their origination and sculpted modes of transportation. Though most of Gardiner’s jobs are commissioned and installed in homes and librar-
ies throughout the area, a walk around her 4-room studio/workshop is a mesmerizing tour of the scope and longevity of Gardiner’s career through individual tiles, small framed murals and pottery. There are exquisite reliefs of birds and insects, foxes and rabbits, elephants and alligators. There are blue and full color delft painted tiles. Charmingly original and detailed works of the natural world sit on shelves and hang on walls and hundreds of molds are stacked on shelves and sit in boxes. Comingled with her more serious pieces are splashes of Gardiner’s wit and humor, sometimes arresting and usually, more than meets the eye. There’s a shark on a stick which, while compelling on its own, was created solely to help market mugs celebrating televisions cultish midsummer Shark Week. A framed tile features a wasp relief encroaching the face in a black and white silkscreened photograph of the fearful and wild-eyed George Ohr, “self-proclaimed greatest potter in the world,” said Gardiner. “You have to love anyone self-proclaimed.” One wall of the studio is nearly covered, mosaic-style, with bits and pieces of Gardiner’s more light-hearted works. And then there’s Gardiner’s Shrine of Weird displayed on a wall near the back of her studio. The collage of items, reminiscent of the advertisements from the back pages of comic books, is a nod to inspiration from unexpected sources. Within the yellowing cellophane packaging of the “Fly Powered Airplane,” are simply two toothpicks and two rolling papers. Fly not included. Gardiner, intrigued by the item, investigated the “inventor.” She learned that when he watched his “Fly Powered Airplane” fly for the first time, he is said to have remarked, “Now I know how the Wright Brothers felt.” Her walk away from the serious art world provided Gardiner the opportunity to produce seriously magical works of art that anyone and everyone can relate to. Much of the ceramist’s work appeals to children such as murals in the children’s sections of libraries, tiles, collages and tea sets inspired by nursery rhymes, Alice in Wonderland, Aesop’s Fables and other children’s literature. Gardiner finds children entertaining and inspirational and she has devoted much of her work and time to honoring children and childhood within her studio and beyond. In addition to taking neighbor children into her studio, divining and nurturing their artistic expression, Gardiner devotes much of her free time to mentoring individual children. She has volunteered for 20 years for Team and Teen Saturday, a program of recommended students from other schools which convenes biweekly during the school year at The Hill School in Middleburg. Gardiner oversees the art projects that the children work on throughout the year
until Christmas break. After the holidays the children begin designing and making kites for the annual Blossom Kite Festival in Washington, DC. Since 2013, Gardiner’s students have dominated the competition, children travel from all over the country to compete in areas of artistic and aeronautic design and a test of the kite and inventor’s flying ability. “We win every year,” said Gardiner proudly. Having taken the top three places for the past four years, the Teen Saturday group has become the people to beat, a great source of pride for all involved. “People are so nice to the kids and they get a lot of attention from, the radio and TV stations,” said Gardiner. “The children are very serious about the completion.” The experience of making the kites together allows the children to help each other in ways that shift the normal social power structure. Children born in the U.S. don’t have the hands-on skills, such as tying knots or weaving that children from different cultures may have. For one child to teach another to tie a knot can be a seed of empowerment. “God Bless the child who’s got his own,” Gardiner quoted from the Billy Holiday song, then mused, “Saving the world in flying kites.” If Gardiner can’t be tracked down at her studio, an installation or at The Hill School, she most likely can be found with her bees, one more thing Gardiner does with passion. Somehow, she finds time to manage approximately 30 hives, mentor new beekeepers and bottle 650 lbs. of honey. “Beekeeping is addictive,” said Gardiner. “If you can keep them from dying, you learn so much by observing them. Bees are a super organism that collectively is like a dog. They recognize you, know how you move and what you smell like.” Working with bees can be frustrating and discouraging owing to the mysterious plight of the honeybee, but Gardiner is captivated and finds beekeeping an endless journey in discovery. “You can’t become an expert, because there is so much to learn.” It’s well-known that artists and deadlines
often don’t mix well, and though Gardiner regularly meets her deadlines, sometimes she needs a little push. “Guilt is one of my biggest motivators,” said Gardiner. Just once the emotions of anxiety and guilt came to her externally, from the client, and the normally agreeable artist took it to him Gardiner-style. “I added a $50 hassle fee to his bill,” she recalled. “When he asked what that was for, I told him, ‘You really stressed me out and made me nervous.’” Gardiner’s rare venture into uncomfortable confrontation ended well, though. “He felt bad and apologized.” Gardiner hasn’t lost any passion for tile making and her ever-curious mind continues to inform her art. From moving to the Loudoun countryside in 1973 so she could affordably live and board her horse, to marrying John and raising her daughter Nicola, to her career as an artist and a manager of the costume shop for Julliard School in New York City, to mentoring children, to helping to preserve the at-risk bee population, Gardiner has crafted her life as artfully and thoughtfully as she crafts her treasured tiles. urious about the exact number of sausages in the world? Lothar Erbe, a master artisan butcher in Purcellville, Virginia, will tell you there are 3,500 types, and he knows 900 of them. Erbe is the owner of Lothar’s Gourmet Sausages, an authentic German artisan butcher shop in Western Loudoun. From Frankfurt, Germany, Erbe’s specialization as a butcher enables him to provide beautiful cuts and delicious flavors for Northern Virginia residents. His passion for his craft is evident through his extensive background and love for offering quality meats. “God put me here in Purcellville to provide good sausages,” he said. He offers a variety of fun flavors in his brats: sriracha, mojito, mango-habanero, Mumbai-style and Alamo fire. He always enjoys playing with flavor profiles and spices to discover new varieties of sausages for his shop. He doesn’t use any fillers, artificial colors or flavors in his meats. He is an advocate of local food, in part, because it is less processed than meat on grocery store shelves. Local food, according to Erbe and his wife June Bush, is tastier, more flavorful and more nutritious. Although he specializes in pork cuts, he sells a selection of other meats from local farms. “The meat…this is an art,” said Bush, “It is a field that needs to be respected. When there is an awareness [of this field], I think we will make tremendous progress. When the understanding and appreciation comes, people will say ‘I don’t want to have fast food.’” Erbe and Bush treat their shop as more than a “business transaction;” they want to get to know their customers and their community. Bush enjoys conversations with customers, while Erbe recommends cuts and instructs on the best way to cook his meats “The smoked pork chops, they are awesome, especially in this weather, a little chilly, a little rain,” he told a customer while I was there. Become a regular at their shop and they will start greeting you by name. They are big believers in the importance of “specialized” businesses, as opposed to franchises. As a specialized business, Erbe prepares special orders for his customers, including a customer who cannot have salt due to a medical issue. Erbe believes everyone should enjoy good food, so he makes special meats low in salt for this customer. Place an order and he can provide it. “Human touch is disappearing, and there is not a huge incentive to connect with

people [anymore],” said Bush, “People are not specialized [in specific vocations anymore]. When we start to lose that, we lose community and tradition. Small businesses are the backbone of a strong economy.” Erbe’s background as an artisan butcher began when he was young. At 14 years old, he was deciding what to do with his life and spent two weeks interning at a local butcher shop, where the owners talked to him about a possible future as a meat engineer or technician. A year later, he took a three-year-long apprenticeship where he trained in the theory and hands-on skills of butchery. Afterward, he began an apprenticeship journey called the “Journeymanship,” a portion of the program that enabled him to travel through France, Spain, Italy and Germany by working in local shops and learning how each country prepared their meats. He spent two years in the military before enrolling at Meister Schule Heyne for Artisan Master Butcher to become a master butcher. There he learned biochemics of meats and how to run his own business. “When you are fortunate enough to have a great master, he teaches you the skills and lessons about life,” said Erbe. After finishing his program, he became Assistant Regional Manager for the meat department of a German supermarket group, where he oversaw 10 branches. He left to work for a liquor corporation, which he credits to teaching him about food and wine pairings, benefiting his work today. He moved to the U.S. in 2006, and quickly realized there was a high demand for quality meat products here, prompting him to go back to his roots as a butcher. He began serving his meats at farmer’s markets and local
events, and cultivated a large group of customers. From there, he and Bush decided to open a brick and mortar shop that could also serve as a production facility. At the time, Bush was working as a flight attendant for United Airlines, but left her job to help grow their business. They haven’t looked back. “When you are looking for quality of life, it is important to have people focused on small businesses,” said Bush, “There is a commitment to quality and service.” ML - LOTHAR’S GOURMET SAUSAGES Open Wednesday-Friday:10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday: 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sunday: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Available at the Winchester Farmers Market Saturday mornings and The Inn at Little Washington’s market on Sundays 860 E Main St., Ste. The always chic Tully Rector boutique showcased dresses suitable for any summertime affair: cocktails, weddings, resort destinations. But the real showstopper was none other than Ann MacLeod, Mayor of Upperville, wearing a black and white gingham dress enhanced with black cotton lace by Nanette Lepore and topped off with a Panama straw hat by Rag & Bone. While on the runway, MacLeod was even serenaded with “Happy birthday” as she is turning 95 this month! Fashion | Page 54

pening a restaurant is often the result of a carefully curated business plan. But for Best Thai Kitchen, Middleburg’s newest restaurant, they opened quickly – before there was signage, before the air conditioner worked properly, before there was art on the walls. They weren’t sure what to expect, but were certain they would have time to focus on interior design and other cosmetic fixes in the restaurant’s early stages. Instead they experienced something of a “Field of Dreams” moment, quickly realizing that people were coming in swarms. One customer told them he followed his nose through Middleburg and ended up at their restaurant — even without a sign to tell him where to go. On weekends, they have often run out of tables. Best Thai Kitchen opened in the middle of April 2017, and has already been received warmly and developed loyal customers. “We are not business people. We are family,” said owner Jaime, “We just love to cook and hope everyone enjoys our food. We care about how the customer feels when they come in to eat.” Long before Best Thai Kitchen was a concept, Jaime and her sisters Maggie and

Banyen were happiest in the kitchen. They grew up with a mother who loved to cook traditional Thai food, and they developed a passion for making food together. Meetups were centered around food, and they often spent hours making delicious spreads for family and friends. The restaurant’s recipes have been passed down in their family, from grandmother, to mother, to daughter. Their love for their craft is palpable, and translates into joy and laughter both in and out of the kitchen. Food is their love language, and satisfied customers fill them with delight and pride. “We serve the food from our hearts, like we are cooking for our family,” said Jaime. Opening a small restaurant in America had long been a dream for them. In Thailand, Banyen had owned a popular outdoor venue where she sold street food. When she announced her move to the states, her customers asked her, “Where will we eat when you’re gone?” After dreaming about it for years, the sisters decided to make their dreams a reality and open a restaurant. They began looking at spaces close to their home in Leesburg, and settled on Middleburg’s charming and quaint community. When deciding on the menu, they picked out the favorite dishes of their

THE CONSTANT GARDNER
By Dulcy B. Hooper | Photos by Richard Hooper
“Some years are better than others,” said Margaret Gardner, talking about her garden and the evolving process by which it has taken shape. “And last year was not a good year.” Gardner was referring to the epic hailstorm that hit Middleburg June 16, 2016, causing widespread damage throughout the area. “My entire garden was just obliterated,” she said. “Hail that was the size of golf balls. I lost so much — all of my hostas, iris, evergreens; my entire vegetable garden. Even a 100-year-old maple tree was blown over.” Gardner’s knowledge of gardening was acquired “by trial and error – and that means a lot of error.” After stepping down as joint master of the Middleburg Hunt in 1994, Gardner stopped riding and took up gardening with a passion. “The last fall I took did it,” she said. “I knew it was time to stop.” The grounds at Wingfield Farm are sloped, and so she began collecting Italian gardening books for inspiration. A few years into her gardening, she visited the Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton, Maryland, inspiring her to create her own topiary of the hunt. “I designed it and still do all the trimming and shaping myself,” she said. “I did take some artistic license with the fox — I couldn’t reduce the width of the fox because it was an old Yew and the shape of the branches did not give me Gardner | Page 64

Gardner | From page 63 enough flexibility.” The hounds were created later, with younger, smaller bushes. “And no frames for anything,” she adds. “The entire thing was done free-form.” One of Gardner’s favorites — and one of her favorite stories — is her monkey puzzle tree, a native to central and southern Chile (in fact, it is the national tree of Chile) that rarely does well in this area. “For years, I had the monkey puzzle in a pot. It was outside in the summer, but had to be moved into the greenhouse every winter and back out every spring.” Eventually, she said, “No one wanted the job of moving the monkey puzzle — and for obvious reasons — they are very prickly. So, I stuck it in the ground and hoped for the best.” Her hope was fulfilled: the tree has thrived ever since. “There are maybe three that I know of in Washington,” Gardner said, “but nothing as big as this one.” The gardens at Wingfield Farm cover some five or six lawns and a series of terraces. The lawns are home to pagodas, a Russian-inspired dacha with onion shaped domes, a small log cabin and various statuary. Standing at the end of one lawn is an ornate facade that has been dubbed the Brighton Pavilion. It is a clever disguise for the rest of structure — a storage building for tractors, mowers and other farm and gardening equipment. The terraces descend from the rear of the house (a former stable). The upper terrace has the largest planting of perennial flowers; the lowest is a lawn, home to magnolias, dwarf maples, ferns, rhododendrons, hostas and a host of other flora. It also includes an ancient apple tree. “It’s the only thing on the place that’s older than I am,” said Gardner. The terraces defining the levels include walkways bordered with lavender and an area dedicated to statues representing the four seasons. The slopes separating the terraces are covered with rugosa roses, hydrangeas and boxwoods. Flowers bloom throughout the growing season, shades of green shifting from spring into summer. Trees envelope themselves in autumn splendor. All the while, Margaret Gardner is trimming, taking out a row of shrubs, putting in new trees and relocating a set of steps. It is ever the work of Mother Nature and a constant Gardner and gardener. ML On p. 63, top: The upper terrace with irises, peonies and roses in bloom. On p. 63, left: The prickly branches of the monkey puzzle tree. Top: A Chinese-inspired pagoda with spinning mandarins. Middle: A portion of the topiary fox hunt. Bottom: A weeping evergreen arches over a set of stone steps connecting two of the terraces.
