Historic village prepares for 47th annual Bluemont Fair

T

he sleepy Blue Ridge village of Bluemont is bustling with activity as it prepares for the 47th annual Bluemont Fair on Sept. 17-18 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days, rain or shine. Admission is still only $5 for adults and free for children under 10, with free parking available. One-way traffic and crosswalks will be enforced in the village to ensure pedestrian safety. As always, the beautifully renovated schoolhouse, grounds, and the entire village will be alive with music, crafts, activities and food. Bluemont’s distinctive logo reflecting this year’s “Harvest Moon” theme features a largerthan-life moon with a fox and pumpkins in the foreground. Created by Denise Kupiszewski of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, the logo will grace the Bluemont Fair’s distinctive poster, t-shirt, mug and other fair memorabilia. Denise is a two-time winner of the poster contest. Her very popular design “The Birds of Bluemont” won in 2011 for the 42nd annual Bluemont Fair. Denise, also an accomplished potter known as The Mud Peddler, is a featured vendor in the juried crafts and will gladly sign copies of her beautiful poster design. Always mindful of the natural beauty of the area and the need to provide good stewardship, Bluemont continues a “green” approach to the fair. Whenever possible, recycled materials are used and easily identifiable receptacles encourage recycling of bottles and cans. Reusable shopping bags with an abbreviated rendering of the “Birds of Bluemont” logo will be avail-

MIDDLEBURG LIFE

able for sale at a nominal price at various sites throughout the fair to encourage fairgoers to reduce the use of plastic bags. An exciting new feature this year is an authentically replicated Indian Village in Stone’s Field, designed to educate children (and adults!) about Native American culture. An award from the Virginia Commission for the Arts’ Artists in Education Program to Sanctuary on the Trail Inc. (as well as a generous donation from Ken and Julia Falke of Boulder Crest Retreat and additional grants and donations) provided funding for the village, a collaboration between Sanctuary on the Trail and Village Montessori School that will be open to the public during both days of the fair. Come celebrate with dance, regalia, storytelling, survival skills, living history exhibitors, trading post vendors, North American Bushcraft School, music from Dark Water Rising, and a tribute to military veterans and uniformed service members. Purchase authentic Native American jewelry and watch these artisans create unique works of art. Event times at the Indian Village can be found within the fair schedule at bluemontfair.org. Requested donation for entrance to the Indian Village is $3 per person or $15 per family. Bluemont is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge on Snickersville Turnpike (Rt. 734) about one hour west of the District of Columbia, 17 miles west of Leesburg and east of Winchester via Route 7. For more information, call 540-554-2376 or visit www.bluemontfair.org.

A heartfelt juice shop comes to Loudoun By Chelsea Rose Moore

C

old-pressed juice is having a moment, and juice lovers can unite around Greenheart Juice Shop’s tasty drinks and raw foods. Greenheart founder Alicia Swanstrom is passionate about clean living, and her mission is to inspire others to live fully. As a nutrient-dense alternative to traditional juicing, the cold-pressed process takes more time. Fruits and vegetables are ground slowly—with little to no heat generated from a spinning blade—allowing for higher levels of nutrients to be extracted from t he pro du c e. Greenheart focuses on making juices that are vegetable-based, low in sugar, and “therapeutic.” “I want people to feel invigorated from the juice,” said Swanstrom. Wh e n s h e founded Greenheart in 2013, Swanstrom started by selling granola at her local farmer’s market in Charlottesville, Virginia. She relocated to Loudoun County to be near family and began to fill the Washington, D.C., metro area with her products. The year 2015 was huge for her. She made a splash in Washington, D.C.’s food world by expanding her line of cold-pressed juices and nut milks, introducing exciting new products (hello, cold-brew coffee!), and adding Diana Morales as a co-founder and co-owner.

6

SEPTEMBER 2016

The biggest news came when the Greenheart team opened a pop-up shop at Georgetown’s Down Dog Yoga in March 2016. After completing a workout, patrons can grab a juice or healthy snack from the juice bar. Visit the Greenheart pop-up Wednesday through Sunday of each week and fall in love with the juices, bright space and sweet smiles of the Greenheart team. With the pop-up shop came expanded offerings, including chia seed puddings, salads and raw desserts. Greenheart added a charcoal lemonade, coconut milk, and both

a superfood and pure nut milk line. They’re focusing on adding medicinal herbs to their products to amp up health benefits. It doesn’t stop there—the team has a list of other products they plan to roll out over the next year. To sustain their expanding business, they’ve added Katie Marshall as a co-owner and business developer. Although Greenheart is enjoying their success, getting there wasn’t easy. Tragedy hit several years ago when Swanstrom’s boyfriend Doug Green was deployed in

MIDDLEBURG LIFE

Afghanistan. Before leaving, he tattooed a green heart on his arm as a reminder of his relationship with Swanstrom and of the sweetness that home carried. Four months into his deployment, he was killed. Losing Green changed Swanstrom’s life and made her realize just how short life is. She made a commitment to focus on living more fully and set out to help others do the same. She quit her job in accounting, and Greenheart was born a few

years later. The company name has two meanings—to Swanstrom, it serves as a tribute to Green and everything he taught her through his life and death. But to consumers, it’s a representation of health and growth. Swanstrom pursued jobs in accounting, journalism and health before settling on a career that put her in the place that had always felt like home: the kitchen. Cooking, for Swanstrom, is therapy, and

chopping vegetables is a meditation. “What’s so magical about cooking is you start with raw ingredients, create something you pour so much love into, and in turn, it nurtures you back,” she said. Find Greenheart at their pop-up location in Georgetown or at farmers markets in the DMV—Foggy Bottom FreshFarm, Ballston FreshFarm, USDA Farmers Market, H Street FreshFarm, Silver Spring FreshFarm, Cascades Farmers Market,

Falls Church Farmers Market, and Leesburg Farmers Market. Greenheart products can also be purchased at www.greenheartjuiceshop.com and picked up at a farmers market. Greenheart’s granola can be ordered through From the Farmer and delivered to your home. Photo credit to Yetta Reid Photography

Cheers to the Corcorans for brewing up an innovative space By Morgan Hensley

L

oudoun’s landscape has changed greatly in recent years, with sprawling suburbs sprouting up through the tilled fields. Recently, a new crop has taken root: breweries. Corcoran Brewing Co. in Purcellville is one of them, and yet the family-run vineyard, cidery and brewery maintains an “Old Loudoun” feel without sacrificing innovation. Husband and wife Jim and Lori Corcoran founded Corcoran Vineyards (formerly Waterford Winery) in 2004. For years, the winery thrived, and continues to do so. Sensing a change in consumers’

tastes, the couple toyed with the idea of adding an on-site brewery. Though experienced vintners, they were unfamiliar with beer production. Luckily for them, Kevin Bills, a fellow member of the congregation at St. Francis de Sales Church, possessed the know-how to take their idea to the next level. Bills, the brewmaster and general manager of Corcoran Brewing Co., was a seasoned home-brewing veteran by the time he was approached by the Corcorans. “I’ve always loved cooking and I love beer,” Bills said. “I was talking with a friend at a Christmas party who had started home brewing. I bought the equipment

and ingredients and did my homework. That was 16 years ago.” Bills taught himself to brew, bottle and keg beers. Perseverance and teamwork led to the opening of Corcoran Brewing Co. in July 2011, the first combination brewery and winery in the Commonwealth. The endeavor was an immediate success. Nearly 1,000 guests attended the grand opening, and many stayed for the rustic ambiance well after the kegs were emptied. The fledgling nano-brewery tapped out the following weekend as well. As selling beer on site was forbidden by state law, the crafty team sold peanuts with a complimentary beer to avoid legal repercussions. This did not dissuade curious imbibers, who flocked to the brewery, then only open on Saturdays, as demand proved too great for supply to keep up. An expansion was necessary. Bills and the Corcorans scouted numerous potential locations before settling on the current facility, a medical building five miles from the original location. Production increased from a half-barrel production to a 7-barrel system that allows for not only greater quantity, but quality assurance as well. The new location was unveiled with a ribbon cutting ceremony with then-Mayor of Purcellville Bob Lazaro. “The brewery has taken on a life of its own,” Bills said. “It’s not just part of the winery anymore.” The increased floorspace has many advantages. The brewery is open five days a week instead of only Saturdays. Trivia nights, Irish musicians, beer-themed art classes and even yoga classes attract visitors. “And we don’t have to worry about bothering the neighbors anymore,” Bills said.

Shelves store personalized ceramic mugs for regulars who are part of the “Mug Club,” a loyalty program that also includes discounts, a T-shirt, and advance tastings. “The beer crowd is a good group—very mellow,” Bills said. “They may disagree on politics, but that doesn’t matter here.” With all of the benefits the new location affords him, Bills remains focused on brewing great, sometimes experimental, beers. The pillars of great beer remain the same. “Quality, consistency, variety,” Bills said. The signature and most popular beer is the LoCo I.P.A., a West Coast-style India pale ale. Although initially reluctant to brew an I.P.A., because he didn’t want Corcoran to become “the 2,500th brewery making the 3,500th I.P.A.,” Bills has warmed to the idea. He’s experimented with alcoholic root beers, a sour Gose that recently took home the bronze medal at the annual Virginia Craft Brewers Festival, and even the gluten-reduced Trail Pale Lager for celiacs. For the fall, Bills is brewing a Padawan Pumpkin Ale, which incorporates longneck pumpkins from Great Country Farms in Bluemont. He has fun with the naming process, too, and draws inspiration from Loudoun’s history and landmarks, such as Berlin Turnpike (a lager) and Dutchman’s Creek (a Hefewizen). Barn doors, corrugated sheets and tables made out of barrels lend an industrial farmhouse vibe to the tasting room. There’s also a peculiar popcorn machine, the type you see at an old movie theater. The red paint is reminiscent of those old Loudoun County barns where tools were put up for the day and, in 2011, Corcoran Brewing Co. began.

“The front and back of the animal goes to the sandwich shop, while the middle is used at Field & Main,” Wavra says. “I’m not saying we’re taking over a whole farm’s production at this point, but with Riccordino’s, we very well could. That’s something that’s a little jewel we have. If we’re going to take beef to the menu, it’s, ‘How do we use the whole damn thing?’” As for Field & Main’s wine list, the byt he-g l ass of fer ings are st r ic t ly Virg in ia, including house wines crafted by Early

ate. They carry with them several goals: endeavoring to support the local farmer while promoting agriculture, a healthier lifestyle and, in so doing, reviving their community’s savory history. Up the road in Middleburg, there’s Elaine Boland, owner of Fields of Athenry Farm and the newly unveiled Side Saddle Cafe, which serves products from the Bolands’ Snickersville Turnpike farm, less than 10 miles away. (In addition to its Loudoun County operation, Fields of Athenry oversees livestock from farms in Maryland and Pennsylvania.) Located in the historic former Fox’s Den Tavern space—on Middleburg’s “Main St re e t ,” Wa s h i n g t on St re e t — S i d e S a d dle sells fresh, delectable cuts of meat, pork and more on the retail side, and onsite sandwiches and small plates in the cute, cozy cafe. Speaking with Boland, you quickly realize she’s down to talk for hours about the health benefits of eating local. Her family’s venture has been a trying one, beginning more than a decade ago, when one of her five daughters, Bernadette, found herself debilitated with Cushing’s disease as a child. After puzzled look after puzzled look from doctors, the mother followed her intuition and transformed her farm livestock into grass-fed.

Mountain Vineyards—the Madison winery owned by Steve and Jean Case—exclusively for the eatery. Wavra and conscientious restauranteurs like him are sprouting up all over the region, delivering hyper-local poultry, pork, beef, wine and more to the plate and pal-

“Ever yone in our family had asthma allergies. When we started transitioning to grass-fed beef, in six months, our family was completely off all asthma allergy medicine. That tells me something,” Boland says at the bar of her cafe, which she describes as her “dream location.”

“This whole restaurant is about community.” - Neal Wavra

MIDDLEBURG LIFE

Boland shares her philosophy in a short essay on Fields of Athenry’s website. “Our farm and home motto is now : ‘If it doesn’t rot—don’t eat it,’” Boland notes. “Think about it. Do a pantry raid. If it is meant to sit weeks or months on end on a shelf in the grocery store, it is going to sit in our guts, too, and wreak havoc on our bodies to boot.” While Side Saddle and Field & Main are two of the newest bistros on the clean, local scene, there are those that came before them, spots like Middleburg’s Goodstone Inn, led by Executive Chef John Leonard, Hunter’s Head Tavern in Upper ville and Harrimans Virginia Piedmont Grill at Salamander Resort, helmed by Chef de Cuisine Chris Edwards. All the eateries offer toothsome dishes, mindful of the local farmer’s integral role in their community. These modern chefs recognize the local-first mentality of millennials and socially conscious consumers. For them, cuisine is about experience. It’s about memories. “ Those experiences that I remember most about my travels around the world are of places—you eat that place,” Wavra reflects. “You think about that place and say, ‘I ate that there because that’s what was there and that what’s good about there.’ It’s what’s good about that place.”

SHEDDING FEARS WITH MARSHALL’S SEAN BURCH By Trevor Baratko

S

ean Burch believes fear plays too great a role in our lives. If you let it creep into your psyche, you’ll never be the best version of yourself, he says. Burch is afraid of heights. Or, I suppose, Burch was afraid of heights. He says he’s still afraid, but I refuse to accept that someone who holds seven world records for climbing mountains across six countries is fearful of heights. “You have to face these fears and you’ll find out what you’re capable of,” Burch, a Marshall resident, told Middleburg Life. “With these expeditions, I try to learn more about myself and what I’m capable of doing. Then I bring that back and spread the word. How far can I safely push myself? If you stay complacent and stay average, you’ll always be sub-par. You’ll never reach your potential.” Tagged “one of the world’s top extreme adventurers” by the National Geographic Society — he also won Nat Geo’s “Ultimate Survival Alaska” — Burch is training for his eighth climbing world record, this one in the Himalayas, where he has summited before. He’s busy courting sponsors for the expedition. The Northern Virginia native

22

said he always wanted to locate to the calm serenity of Virginia’s Piedmont, which he finally did several months ago. “I love this area. My big first date

SEPTEMBER 2016

was at the Red Fox Inn in Middleburg when I was about 16 years old. It’s always been dear to me.” A history nut, Burch says Old Dominion is the perfect fit. Yet, as

one might suspect, he’s not always around — he’s off climbing mountains on one of the five continents where he holds world records. Or he’s running marathons in Russia, the scene of one of his best stories. “There were these Russians there with guns, and they’re supposed to be protecting you,” he recalls. “But they’re all so drunk off these five-gallon jugs of cognac. One of them wanted to arm-wrestle everyone who came in after the race.” Burch went on to note that intoxicated Russian ended up bloodying the nose of a photographer. In addition to extreme adventuring, Burch works as a personal development and leadership expert, a documentarian and photojournalist. He was awarded U.S. Goodwill Ambassador to Nepal for his exposure and promotion of the country’s tourism efforts and living conditions. So, what is it that drives Burch to these foreign lands, to take routes that have never before been trotted on? “You don’t know what to expect when you get to these regions. That’s the beautiful thing.” Courtesy photos: Sean Burch

You do not need to be a professional floral designer or garden club member to participate. This unique and very affordable opportunity is open to anyone who loves flowers. Girl friends’ day out, couples enjoying a together day, brides looking for ideas, everyone is invited. Holly’s presentation will include making a garland, and you will be invited to join in. There are other arranging techniques and surprises in store! The event is held in the beautifully restored bank barn at Riverside on the Potomac in Leesburg, an ideal event location. He’s a poet with a pencil, one house at a time By Kerry Dale

O

key Turner doesn’t have a business card, and if he did, he doesn’t know what he would put on it other than his name. “Some people have called me a house artist,” he said, “and that sounds about right.” The Middleburg resident is not a formally trained architect, yet he designs and oversees the building of and renovations for some of the finest houses in the area. His style is distinctive, clean and traditional, taking any house and transforming it into what might have been. Additions and homes that seem to have grown organically over time, always both elegant and historic, are his specialty. The New York-born, self-taught house wizard’s first fascination with architecture took hold when he lived in Philadelphia in his early 20s. “I fell in love with old houses,” he said, “and decided that I wanted to find one to renovate in Virginia.” That led the college-trained painter/sculptor to Hot Springs, Virginia, where he picked up his first project. “I wanted to live in Charlottesville, but I couldn’t afford anything there,” said Turner, adding that he remembers thinking, “Now what do I do?” Indeed. His very first house, The Pillars, was a grand 1890s Greek Revival “summer villa,” which more resembled a mansion than a cottage. Young Turner dove into the project and began the total renovation of the approximately 6,000-square-foot estate that took him three years to complete. He then sold The Pillars

32

www.middleburglife.com

so he could begin the next in a long line of restorations. His second house was Broadlawn, an 1850s Episcopal church in nearby Warm Springs that he converted into a house for the Richmond diocese. A visit to the Middleburg area at the invitation of the late Sis Worrall, an iconic social and business leader in the community, led him to the hunt country in the 1980s. “Sis invited me to ride in the Christmas parade,” he said. “I was the last one left after the parade when a Washington Post reporter showed up. He photographed and interviewed me about my opinions about fox hunting, which I knew nothing about. I had borrowed the hunt clothes and the horse, and there I was in the Washington Post.” Middleburg felt like the right place for Turner to continue his restoration of old houses. He loved the area and there was an abundance of properties to work on. Over the last 30 years, Turner guessed that he’s renovated three properties (seven houses) for himself and 35-40 houses for family and clients. The Middleburg countryside is speckled with houses Turner has transformed, very often finding their beginnings with a drawing on a napkin. “We’ve done many jobs for Okey with the project sketched out on a napkin,” said Brad Brown, a partner in Maidstone Construction. “He used to do sketches so good you could frame them. His pencil work is amazing, but now it’s mostly napkins.” “Okey has made so many bad places nice,” says John Coles, a prominent Middleburg real estate agent

SEPTEMBER 2016

and Turner’s long-time friend and colleague. “I used to take photos of ugly houses and send them to Okey and he would do a drawing to show a client what was possible. I cut my teeth in real estate with those drawings and Okey’s vision. “Whenever a house that Okey has worked on comes on the market, it sells faster than most and at a great price. He’s so talented.” Turner’s career began with the desire to bring a home back to its glory, but he only had to please himself with his early projects. “My best client is myself,” Turner said. “But I love working for other people, too.” Turner said his greatest experience with any client was when he worked for the late Bunny Mellon. “She was amazing,” he said. “No one knows about her because she was so private. All this design stuff

you see in magazines, she did in the 1950s. She did it all first. She took Pilates with [Joseph Pilates], had therapy with Jung. Her dress designer was Givenchy and her favorite artist was Mark Rothko. She was a true visionary.” In the design of his projects, Turner tends to take a poetic approach. “Architecture is like a language,” he said. “It has grammatical rules you can study and learn, but you need to adapt and take poetic license. I see the potential in places and I go from there.” Clearly, Okey Turner, like Bunny Mellon, is also a visionary of sorts, beautifying this area one house at a time. Photo by Kerry Dale: Okey Turner

ust before World War II, on a beach on the south coast of England outside the town of Wittering, a 7-year-old girl took a ride on a donkey that would change the course of her life. For young Jo Wells, now Rectortown resident Jo Motion, her passion for horses was sparked and kindled by local stable owner Elizabeth Ferrand and the Surrey Union Hunt Pony Club. By 14, Jo had competed in many gymkhanas (games on horseback) and was the amateur whipper-in for the Surrey Union Hunt. She began riding thoroughbreds and became enamored with their speed, agility and intelligence. “I was personally very happy on a thoroughbred,” Motion said recently. “It was like driving a

fancy powerful car.” Before long, Motion left school and began working for steeplechase trainer Jack O’Donoghue as a “lad” in his racing “yard,” including a former show jumping mare named Nickel Coin. For three years, Motion worked the mare over fences and galloped to keep her fit, often hunting her. Hacking out near the North Downs of Dover to Epsom Downs for a workout was a regular event. Motion cleaned up after her and groomed, bathed and cared for her every need along with two other horses in the yard. Motion, who owns the Middleburg Tack Exchange, explained that in England, when working in a racing stable, “you do your three.” That meant being responsible for three horses—grooming, tacking,

mucking, riding, bathing, wrapping, feeding, hand-walking— whatever needed to be done. Nickel Coin proved to be a phenomenal jumper, but not terribly fast by racing standards. Still, in 1951, after winning many qualifying steeplechases, Nickel Coin and Jo Wells traveled to Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool to face their ultimate challenge, the Grand National. Young Jo rode Nickel Coin to stretch her legs around the Aintree grounds and looked at the foreboding obstacles, some with a 5-foot hedge that was 3 feet wide with a 5-foot ditch in front. She called her mother and said she was having second thoughts about the race. The crowd at Aintree was 250,000, and while initial odds

The 36 horses approached the first fence and many fell. The announcer named them as best he could, and Nickel Coin was among them. Jo gathered up her grooming kit, halter and supplies and ventured out after the horse, but stopped when she heard a call that the mare was up and

running and didn’t fall after all. Nickel Coin jumped flawlessly while others tumbled around her. Loose horses galloped alongside until they realized that jumping was indeed optional without a jockey. After the first revolution of the course was complete, the field narrowed to four. Nickel Coin and jockey John Bullock managed to safely navigate the remainder of the course and win the race. Jo met them and escorted the horse to winner’s circle to celebrate the victory and assess the condition of the horse. Jo resists comparisons to “National Velvet,” the 1944 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney depicting a horse-crazy teenage girl winning the Grand National. “It is a delightful story but complete fiction,” she said. But her story is not. When asked about being a female in the “yard” or “on the backside,” she insisted she was treated equally and paid the same as the other “lads.” “While there were few girls working in racing stables in those days ,” Motion said, “the work was equal and so was the pay. I never had any difficulty working in a man’s world.” Motion first came to

Farm) off The Plains Road. She returned to England to marry her childhood sweetheart and pony club comrade, Michael Motion, in 1956. Together, they raised their four children and many horses, cows and pigs at their Herringswell Grange Farm outside of Newmarket. Later, they returned to the United States. and settled in Middleburg for good in 1986. Jo Motion is the matriarch of an equestrian dynasty. Her husband served as bloodstock agent for many fine thoroughbreds and their son Andrew continues in that tradition right here in Middleburg. At Andrew’s first appearance in the Saratoga yearling sale last month, he sold a filly for $285,000. Andrew’s daughter, Mary, is pursuing a career in racing. Andrew’s older brother, highly regarded thoroughbred trainer Graham Motion, has won many major races, including the Kentucky Derby, several Breeders’ Cup events and the Dubai World Cup. And the Motions’ granddaughter, Lillibet, competes in show jumping. Beware, parents. All it takes is a donkey ride and you may be off to the races!

LIFE IN THE COUNTRY Sustainable practices that harmonize with landscapes & inspire construction By Missy Janes

I

f you are planning to construct a new house or building, or renovate or add on to an existing one, study the environmental and economic benefits of Green Building. Think high performance as well as design. Look to LEED certification guidelines to save on maintenance costs.

“Trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30 percent and can save 20 - 50 percent in energy used for heating.”—USDA Forest Service • Site your buildings with care. Nestle at the edge of a wooded area, the side of a hill or low area where natural air convection warms in winter and cools in summer. • Avoid building on hilltops or where the house will stand out and energy consumption

will be greater. • Recycle old buildings and building materials. • Plant plenty of trees and shrubs to provide shade and carbon reduction to balance air and water quality and prevent erosion. • Plan your plantings. Deciduous trees planted at a southern exposure will provide summer shade and winter interest. Trees planted at a western exposure will create a wind break. Large trees or land forms help ground a house

and keep it in scale with the surrounding landscape. • Choose indigenous building materials and styles to reflect the history and traditions of the region. • Keep the scale of buildings and the “built environment” in proportion with the property, trees, landscape and farm buildings. • Engage the services of a professional who is well versed in the local architectural vernacular, the English style of siting a house or barn, and familiar with green building practices. It will save you in many ways.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY • Bid geothermal, solar and solar hot water from local contractors. Site for efficiency and conserve with timers. Conserve energy use to reduce the need for coal fired power plants and improve air quality. This can save our landscape from mega-power towers and assure safer air quality.

• Use the best and greenest insulation. • Choose reflective and high quality windows to save on HVAC (Heat Vent Air Conditioning). • Keep square footage to a comfortable minimum. REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE • Reduce or eliminate the use of toxic cleaning supplies.

• Recycle water from the roof into rain barrels or cisterns for watering plants and washing cars; recycle yard debris and coffee grounds to build a rich source of garden soil from compost. • Recreate habitat by making brush piles with tree trimmings. • Recycle. Give everything you use a second life or third. MINIMIZE OUTDOOR LIGHTING The night sky is a special attraction in the country. Lights confuse plants and animals that live by a nocturnal schedule or navigate in the dark. • Direct light toward ground, shielding unnecessary “up” lighting.

➼ ➼ ➼

• Turn off when not needed. Use timers and motion detectors. • Refrain from over lighting, especially at entrances to driveways, houses and barns. PLAN DRIVEWAYS AND ENTRANCES: BLEND WITH THE NEIGHBORING LANDSCAPE AND RURAL CHARACTER • Resist imposing security gates seen at gated communities and apply your country vision.

COUNTRY COURTESIES: SAVING OUR DIRT ROADS Support our gravel and two-lane roads. Protect the hedgerows that grow beside them as they provide shade, maintain habitat for wildlife and slow down run-off. Traffic on dirt roads is slower, cooler and the ride more scenic. Many people use dirt roads for riding, driving horses, biking, walking and jogging. • Whoa, go slow!

• Connect to an existing access road where possible to minimize roads and save more habitat. • If you must put in a new driveway, tuck it into the contours of the land avoiding the division of large open fields or destruction of natural woodlands. Steep and straight will present maintenance problems. • An attractive and beneficial practice along driveways is to mow one neat swath next to the edge, leaving the rest longer or wilder. This provides a graceful variety of texture and visual interest.

SO SE F T R U ST E D

• Reduce car traffic by combining trips. Eliminate unnecessary outings. An average family generates 11 car trips daily. • Keep roadside trash picked up. Volunteer for spring clean up.

“Begin with the end in mind.” — Stephen Covey, author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” By Tom Northrup

I

t was not apparent to many of Tobias Wolff ’s teachers and classmates at The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, in the early 1960s that he was on track to become a “highly effective” adult. I was a member of that class of 1964 and knew Toby as a student who struggled and as a school citizen who consistently and creatively challenged the rules. While I

didn’t know him well, one of my roommates was a close friend of his, and the school was relatively small, so many of us were well aware of his activities.

Toby did not graduate with our class. Despite showing promise and talent as a writer, he was expelled at the beginning of our senior year for failing his re-examination to remedy a failure of a science class from the previous spring. During the next year, he lived with his mother in Washington, D.C., where he worked, partied and earned a high school equivalency certificate. In 1964, he enlisted in the Army and served for four years, including time as an officer in Vietnam. His account of his months there, “In Pharaoh’s Army” (1994), is considered one of the most moving descriptions of the war. In 1989, twenty-six years after leaving Hill School, Toby wrote

MIDDLEBURG LIFE

another memoir, “This Boy’s Life,” about his tumultuous and itinerant childhood years between 10 and 18. Some critics have compared it to “Huckleberry Finn” or “Catcher in the Rye,” except “This Boy’s Life” was not fiction. As an educator for nearly 50 years, I’ve always been interested in and have sought to understand the conditions and influences that help a child become a psychologically healthy, self-educating and motivated adult. After all, isn’t this the fundamental task and long-term goal of parents and schools? Using the lens of my experiences as an educator and a parent, I’d like to explore some of the clues in “This Boy’s Life” that were predictors that Tobias Wolff would ultimately become a caring husband and father, an involved citizen of his community, a loyal friend, an outstanding teacher and an off-the-chart success professionally. The head of Stanford University’s graduate creative writing program, Wolff is the recipient of multiple awards for his work. David Sedaris even called him America’s greatest living short story writer. So what were the portents that suggested Toby would succeed? While there are many, three were primary: 1) His belief in and vision for himself at age 15. Despite his undistinguished academic record at a public school in Concrete, Washington, his representation of himself in his application materials to Hill School described a very different boy. He wrote: “I felt full of things that had to be said, full of stifled truth. That was what I thought I was writing—the truth. It was a truth known only to me, but I believed in it more than I believed in the facts arrayed against it. I believed I was a straight A student, an Eagle Scout, … a powerful swimmer … a boy of integrity.” 2) The love, acceptance and encouragement of his mother, Rosemary, and older brother Geoffrey, who is also an accomplished writer. Geoffrey helped stimulate Toby’s boyhood love of books and writing and advised Toby to apply to an Eastern boarding school that would allow him to escape his abusive stepfather, as well as offer him a stimulating academic program. And his mother, despite her poor judgment in many areas, was steadfast in her love for and support of Toby. When he was expelled from Hill, Toby wrote that his mother “wanted me to know that she wasn’t mad at anything, that I had lasted longer [two years at Hill] than she ever thought I would.” 3) His passion for reading and writing, which was recognized and encouraged by an important adult mentor at Hill. That teacher, he wrote, “saw that I loved books but had no way of talking about them beyond what I’d begun to learn from my brother [Geoffrey]. This man befriended me … tutored me, cast me in some of the plays he directed.” Angela Duckworth, in her book “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance,” makes the case that grit (not test scores or conventional academic achievement markers) is the best predictor of long-term success. Suffice to say, Tobias Wolff exhibited the highest level of “grit” in his adolescence. In addition to recommending “This Boy’s Life” and “Grit” for careful reading, my own lifetime experience insists that virtually every child has the potential to become a highly functioning adult. Most importantly, parents and teachers need to have faith that children carry the seeds of success within them. Their task is to provide the love, structure, latitude and patience that all children deserve.

Wealth Planning You Can Build On “Some of us approach wealth planning by leaving it entirely to the ‘experts,’ often not fully understanding what it is they have recommended we do, while some of us throw up our hands and do nothing. Neither way is very wise.” — Robert B. Seaberg, PhD, Wealth Planning Managing Director at Morgan Stanley

Wealth planning — that is, the integration of lifestyle planning, asset preservation and wealth transfer issues — can seem a daunting, almost overwhelming task. And the more assets we have, the more complex the task can seem. This is why our family business, The CGE Group at Morgan Stanley, encourages families to discuss their specific wealth planning goals with us in a private setting. These conversations along with a comprehensive wealth plan become even more critical when families are faced with a transitional period, such as a significant life event. We can help you plan for these events. We invite you and your family to contact ours to learn more about how we are helping families grow, protect and transfer wealth. Swan Lake Pas de Trois for the 35-city North American tour. “There’s a good reason why ‘Swan Lake’ is so often called the ‘ballet of all ballets’ – the combination of pure romanticism, the story about love and deception and Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet music all continue to reach new generations of audiences,” says Troshchenko. “Manassas’s growing art scene makes it the perfect location for the Russian Grand Ballet’s Swan Lake performance. It is an incredible opportunity for both the younger and older generations to experience the arts and enjoy a ballet classic.” “Swan Lake,” based on Russian folklore and German legend, follows a heroic young prince as he works to free the beautiful swan maiden from an evil spell. The ballet is in three acts with two intermissions, with music by Tchaikovsky, choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, and libretto by Vladimir Begichev and Vasily Getzer. Running time is approximately two hours and 30 minutes. For more information, please contact Gulya Hartwick at info@RussianGrandBallet.com or 347-901-3042.

Six amazing ballet facts 1) A male dancer lifts over 1-1/2 tons worth of ballerinas during performances. 2) Most ballerinas wear out 2-3 pairs of pointe shoes per week. 3) One tutu costs up to $2,000 to make. 4) The same tutu requires 60-90 hours of labor and over 100 yards of ruffle.

5) Not only it is beautiful to watch the famous dance of the Little Swans, but also dancing in unison holding onto other dancers is extraordinarily difficult! And don’t forget most of this dance is done on pointe. The dance was meant to imitate the way cygnets huddle and move together for protection. Four dancers enter the stage in a line and move across with their arms crossed in front of one another, grasping the next dancer’s hand. They move sideways, doing sixteen pas de chat. Ideally the dancers move in exact or near-exact unison. At the very end, they break their chain and try to “fly,” only to drop to the ground. 6) Surprisingly enough, the Russian Grand Ballet troupe has a Japanese dancer, the Honored Artist of Ukraine Akari Kawasaki.

Art of the Land at Arterra

I

By Brian Yost

f you stop by the Arterra Wines tasting room near Delaplane, the significance of the winery’s name will seem obvious. The words “art” and “terra” have been blended to mean “art of the land.” After all, owners Jason Murray and Sandy Gray-Murray are artists. Sandy’s earth and vine-inspired artworks are exhibited in the tasting room, which doubles as her gallery. Jason’s art is on display at the tasting bar, where you can sample the Arterra wines. That seems simple enough. With regard to the wine, however, there is something slightly more nuanced taking place. Most winegrowers will tell you that their wine is primarily an expression of what happens in the vineyard. Wine, after all, is an agricultural product. At the same time, there is some degree of manipulation that takes place in the winery. In that regard, Jason is a self-described minimalist. Above all else, Arterra wines are an expression of the land. In an earlier life, Jason was a state horticulturalist and worked exclusively in Northern Virginia. This background provided him with an understanding of local terroir that few other growers possess. Site selection is important and the rocky soil of Fauquier County is perfect for viticulture. Most wineries have paid close attention to ideal site selection and even paid hefty fees for expert consultants, so Arterra is really no different in this regard. Jason will tell you that he allows his fruit to mature as long as possible. By letting the fruit hang on the vine well into October, it is possible to elevate the Brix (sugar content) to ideal levels in a good growing year. Low Brix will force winemakers to add sugar, which is a key element of fermentation. Again, many winegrowers apply this same principle. So what is so special about Arterra? To the best of my knowledge, Jason is the only winemaker in the Mid-Atlantic using native yeast. As opposed to cultured yeast purchased and applied in the winery by every other winemaker in the state, native yeast is a natural product that occurs in the vineyard. Winemakers prefer the

stronger commercial yeasts, because they ferment more quickly and produce a more consistent product. These factors are very important in larger-scale production, but they eliminate an element of risk for wineries of any size. So why use native yeast? If properly managed, the payoff for natural fermentation can be huge. Fortunately, this is Jason’s superpower. His wines have complexity and textures that are difficult to achieve with cultured yeasts. Conventional wines have fairly linear taste profiles that move from the front to the back of the palate. The Arterra wines are also linear, but spread out across the tongue with rich flavor profiles. A description simply will not do. I suggest you experience it for yourself. The Arterra vineyards are too young to produce fruit, so it will be another year or two before we see any true estate wines. Even then, the vines will be young, but I anticipate great things. Jason has planted Chenin Blanc, Malbec and Petit Syrah. I have encountered just a few Malbecs regionally and I have tasted a couple that were quite good. Chenin Blanc and Petit Syrah, on the other hand, are new to the East Coast. I am keeping my fingers crossed and looking forward to something a little different. The main event at Arterra, however, is Tannat.

If you are unfamiliar with the varietal, it is a big, bold red that is grown widely in Southern France and is the predominant varietal in Uruguay. It is cultivated throughout Virginia, but it has historically been used for blending. In the last few years, a handful of winemakers east of the Blue Ridge have championed the grape and single-varietal Tannat has appeared in several tasting rooms. There have been some stunning examples. I predict that 10 years from now Virginia will be known for this grape in much the way it is for Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot today. Jason was crafting exceptional Tannat prior to opening his own winery. So let me further predict that Arterra will be among the wineries of note leading the charge in the production of world-class Tannat. I visited Arterra on their opening day in early 2015 and I have been frantically telling people about them ever since. I am often surprised at how few people are even aware of the winery, but it is after all a small boutique operation. It is not one of the big flashy tasting rooms with music every weekend and busses will find it difficult to navigate the narrow gravel lane that leads to the tasting room. In any case, it is really a venue for the serious wine drinker. So if you fit that profile, Arterra is just a short drive from Middleburg. Cheers!
